Penkridge Sixth Former is skydiving in memory of his Mother SUPPORTING THE CHARITY “SHINE” WORKING WITH SPINA BIFIDA Connor Davies a sixth form student at Wolgarston High School is braving a skydive to raise money for the charity Shine, and in memory of his Mother, Claire Davies. This article is written by Connor When life throws difficulty your way there are two things you can do: you can give up, sit down, and accept that there is nothing you can do to make things better; or you can fight it with every ounce of effort you have, never let it beat you or knock you down and realise that no matter what happens nothing can crush your spirit. My Mum chose the latter option when faced with a life-changing illness that lead to the amputation of her lower legs at the ages of 11 and 12, and, later, her becoming entirely wheelchair-bound. Since birth, Mum suffered from Spina Bifida - a condition where a fault in the development of the spinal cord and surrounding vertebrae leaves a gap or split in the spine meaning the spinal cord does not form properly and may be damaged. She fought her illness everyday of her life and never let it overcome or define her. Even through the toughest of times, she was one of the funniest, kindest and most selfless people I will ever meet, with a fantastic sense of humour that could brighten up the darkest of rooms. She really was the best mum a hyperactive little terror like me could have asked for. Now I wish to raise money for Shine charity, who work with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus patients to ensure that they have all the support they could need. I have seen first-hand how Spina Bifida can change the life of anyone with the illness and all the people around them too, and so now I wish to do anything I can to help this charity carry on their essential work, helping people like mum. On the 16th July 2016, I will be doing a sponsored skydive in order to raise money to support Shine charity. During the last week of half term, we in Sixth Form hosted a ‘Colour for Claire’ non-uniform day and a whole-school bake sale, while I also collected donations for my skydive. I am now proud to announce that we raised a final total of £1115.62, absolutely smashing my initial target of £1000! And thanks to an incredibly generous donation which covered the entire cost of my skydive, all of this money can go straight to Shine!! I must say, I have been completely overwhelmed by the response to my story and it really warms my heart to see all the lovely things people have said about Mum and just how generous everyone can be for a good cause. It really goes to show just how amazing Mum was and how many lives she touched. 16
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK || APRIL 2016 STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK APRIL 2016
But even more so, it shows how kind my friends, peers, teachers and the whole of the local community are and how generous and supportive everyone is, as you all seem to be all too willing to get behind a crazy 17 year old who wants to throw himself out of a plane from 15,000 feet. This skydive is all about doing something to make Mum proud, and I think everyone who commented or liked or shared any of my posts, everyone bought a cake or two, who wore colours to celebrate Mum’s life and anyone who made any donation, big or small, have managed that already. I would also like to remind anyone who wishes to help that donations can still be made to my JustGiving page at: www.justgiving.com/ Connor-Davies3 Once again, I cannot express how thankful I am to every single one of you who has helped get this far. It genuinely means the absolute world to me.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not
just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Cannock
and Stafford areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Excellent service at Ralvern Ltd ALWAYS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE Ralvern Ltd have long been providing their customers with an exceptional service, ever since the business was first established by Ralf Collis in 1946. Now his grandsons, identical twins Simon and Chris Edwards, run the well-established family business and the same commitment to excellent customer service is still in place.
It’s not just making bespoke designs that Ralvern takes care of though, the team also offer a complete reupholstery service. “If you can’t bear to part with your existing suite, we offer a superior reupholstery service that goes above and beyond recovering your choice of fabric and leathers.” The team can recreate the original suite to an even higher standard than it was originally built.
Manufacturing all manner of sofas, settees, chairs, chaise lounge and occasional chairs from their base in Cannock, the company can create any type of design - from ultramodern to classically traditional. “Our highly skilled craftsmen can create any look our customers want for their home. We offer a really helpful and welcoming approach and enjoy exceeding customer’s expectations,” says Simon. There are no salesmen at Ralvern and clients deal direct with myself and Chris: “We have a very personal approach to customer relations and want to take care of customers ourselves, that’s why we cut out the salesmen, so that we can offer a unique, personal and relaxed approach.”
“As a standard we strip your lounge sofas back to the frame and start from scratch, using superior foams, fillings, springs and cushions. The sofa is then finished by our highly experienced craftsmen to achieve a truly unique lounge setting.” Ralvern will collect your existing suite from home, offer you a replacement whilst work is carried out and deliver the finished suite once completed.
In-house frame making enables clients to design their lounge from concept, because all frames at Ralvern are made from scratch. “We only use the best materials and we have the freedom to create sizes and designs that will suit any room and taste. We include a lifetime frame, six inch coil springs and our build quality is always exceptional.” And the company are well known for their excellent standards, establishing an excellent reputation over the 70 years they’ve been in business. “Our gallery of fabric books perfectly illustrates our capacity to create almost any type of design, using our experience, drive and passion.”

Partnership Trust rated “good” in first NHS League table for openness and transparency Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Partnership NHS Trust – one of the UK’s biggest integrated health and adult social care NHS providers - was today named among the top 100 NHS organisations rated outstanding or good for its levels of transparency and openness. NHS Improvement today published its first annual ‘Learning from Mistakes League’ and the reporting culture at the Partnership Trust, which provides community nursing, therapies and adult social care, was rated as good and the Trust was ranked as the 96th out of 230 NHS Trusts. The League was published as Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt announced plans to improve safety and transparency within the NHS to help build a safer service at the first ministerial – level Global Patient Safety Summit. Stuart Poynor, Partnership Trust Chief Executive, said: “Following the Francis Report, NHS organisations were presented a unique opportunity to challenge themselves about how openly staff could raise concerns and operate in their best professional manner, without prejudice. “We have always adopted a culture of openness and transparency and this is why I took the decision to create the role of Ambassador for Cultural Change in 2013 to give staff greater confidence about raising concerns they may have 14

about the standards of patient care in the Trust.” The Ambassador role gives staff an additional route to quickly bring concerns about patient safety or standards of care to the attention of senior management at the Partnership Trust. In addition the Trust produced a short film featuring district nurse Lizzie Burgess-Havard who raised concerns and was supported by Helene Donnelly, Ambassador for Cultural Change. Lizzie says: “There have been many a time during my career when I’ve wanted to raise concerns but I’ve been too frightened. “But when I finally did and my concerns went straight to the Chief Executive, I felt reassured. I have found the whole process very supportive and I felt safe.” She added: “I have a duty of care to this organisation and I really feel I did the right thing. Things have improved for the better, for the staff and for the patients. I feel good.” Mr Poynor added: “We are pleased with our ranking in this first League and although we have many routes and opportunities for staff to bring up issues of concern we need to do more to make sure they feel confident to do so.“

Cannock Chase Trekking Centre NEW DEVELOPMENT WILL ATTRACT NEW VISITORS TO CANNOCK CHASE An ambitious new development which will attract extra visitors to Cannock Chase and create several new jobs is under construction after six years of planning. The redevelopment of Cannock Chase Trekking Centre, near Penkridge, is the long-term dream of proprietor Lisa Gregory, who opened her riding stables, just off the A34, nearly 21 years ago. Planning permission for a new equestrian centre was granted by South Staffs District Council and the contractors have now begun work.
“This development is a long-held dream of mine,” said Miss Gregory, who is keeping the centre open to riders during the duration of the project. “We already have riders coming to us from all over the country and I am sure our state-of-the-art centre will bring even more visitors to Cannock Chase.
The first phase of the development will provide an indoor riding arena and a cedar and glass construction visitors’ centre which will include a contemporary coffee shop with an outdoor viewing area where visitors will be able to enjoy watching the horses and views across Cannock Chase, conference and training facilities, changing and shower facilities and an equestrian shop.
18
Phase two will provide 46 new stables, with tack rooms, washing areas, laundry rooms and foaling boxes. Work should be completed by early summer.
“We have some of the most beautiful riding and walking country in the Midlands and our new coffee shop will be open to the public as well as to our riders. This will be an important development for tourism in the area.”
The trekking centre is a hugely popular attraction in Staffordshire and brings more than 17,000 visitors to the Chase every year.

Happy 4th Birthday Staffordshire Outlook CELEBRATING OUR 4 TH YEAR IN BUSINESS
Here at the Staffordshire Outlook, we are celebrating our 4th anniversary in April! We are so grateful to all of the clients who continue to advertise their business and to the readers for contributing to the Staffordshire Outlook Magazine’s popularity and success. Sales Director Sharon Caldwell says “I cannot believe how the last four years has flown by. I didn’t think when I started the magazine that it would be as successful as it has been to date. I have such great feedback from the readers of the magazine, and they comment on how local the content of the magazine is.This was my main objective when I started the Staffordshire Outlook. The comments I receive every month off my clients is fantastic, and it makes me so proud that the Staffordshire Outlook is bringing new customers and increasing their profit. I want to thank you, the readers of the magazine and hopefully you will continue to support the Staffordshire Outlook.”
The Chase CACI Clinic is a fledgling business and as such advertising as vitally important. We were approached by many companies who offered differing advertising services. We tried several of them (most with limited success). We were then recommended to contact Sharon at Staffordshire Outlook by one of her many satisfied customers and since then have not looked back. The quality of the magazine is superb, it is distributed over a wide area and, as it is bi -monthly, people do not get fed up with it. The responses we have had via the magazine have far outstripped any other form of advertising and that is why we are sticking with it. Sharon is a delight to work with and so helpful. If we had only met Sharon first we would have saved a lot of money on ineffectual advertising.
Doug & Pam at The Chase CACI Clinic Tech Alum Systems Ltd would like to say a big thank you to Sharon at the Staffordshire Outlook for her efforts in helping us put our adverts together. We have advertised in the magazine for the past 17 months and have found the response excellent.
Please see right a few client testimonials who are advertising their business in the magazine with great results.
Our main objective has been to raise our profile in the Staffordshire area, and the Staffordshire Outlook magazine has certainly done this for us! A great local magazine packed with useful information. We will definitely continue to advertise our business in the magazine and would recommend using the magazine to advertise your business; it’s increased our sales and could do the same for your business! Congratulations to all at the Staffordshire Outlook on your 4th Birthday and hope you are around for many more years!

Desirable Daisies
FROM LOW GROWING TO 8FT GIANTS, DAISIES ARE ONE OF THE GLORIES OF SUMMER For the lawn-proud garden owner daisies are weeds to be fought with and removed at all costs. For the flower gardener the daisy family are one of the glories of summer and the most desirable flowering plants. From low growing carpeters to 8ft giants for the back of the border there is a daisy for every garden. This month I’ll share some of my favourites from my own garden with you.
yellow rudbeckias will also grow well in dappled shade. We all loved growing annual sunflowers as kids and there are some less tall perennial types to choose for the garden. Their flowers are smaller but very numerous. “Happy Days” is only 3ft (90cm) tall with large flowers whereas “Lemon Queen” will get to 6ft (180cm) tall and has masses of pale yellow flowers in autumn. Some are scented – the variety “Bitter Chocolate” smells exactly like that!
Technically daisies are members of the Aster (or Michaelmas daisy) family and all have a rayed petals and a disc or cone at the centre and all share the same attractiveness to bees and butterflies
Coreopsis (common name Tickseed) are popular lowgrowing plants but some are not hardy here. We grow the reliable Zagreb and the beautiful pale yellow Moonbeam as these are hardy for us. These will spread to form a good sized clump and are easy to divide in spring.
Let’s start with Asters, those late bloomers that come in a range of colours from white, through pink, lavender to the dark purple. The best of these is the variety “Mônch”, which blooms from August and never gets mildew. I also love the tall growing “Calliope” who has black stems, glossy leaves and flowers in October and November. Aster need a reasonably sunny spot and soil that holds some moisture so mulch them well in spring. For brighter colours you can’t do better than Heleniums – one of my passions. We hold the National Collection and have a good range in our catalogue. These are certainly sun lovers and come in shades of red, orange and yellow. Perhaps best known as tall plants for the back of the border blooming in August and September there are also some new, shorter ones that start flowering in late June: “Red Army” is bright red and 2ft (60cm) tall and “Mardi Gras” is a similar height with flowers that blend red, orange and yellow. “Sahin’s Early Flowerer” has similar flowers but is nearly 3ft tall. “El Dorado” is one of the best new varieties with large golden yellow flowers. He is about 2ft 6in tall (75cm) but doesn’t need staking. “Flaming Katy” is taller and a fiery orange-red. Two closely related plants are commonly known as Cone Flowers: the pink or white Echinaceas and the yellow Rudbeckias. In our garden we find the old varieties are more reliable than the many new ones. For Echinacea I recommend “Ruby Star” (bright pink) and “White Swan” and for Rudbeckias the soundly perennial “Deamii” and “Goldsturm”. For a really tall one try “Herbstsonne” (“Autumn Sun”), which will grow 6ft (180cm) tall. The 32
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2016
Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum) were once common cottage garden plants and they are making a comeback as gardeners remember just how easy and reliable they are. Most are white although there are a few pale yellow varieties to be had. My favourite is “Beauté Nivelloise” which one cheeky customer renamed “bad hair day” after the wayward look of the petals. “Fiona Coghill” has large, ball-shaped flowers that remind me of a florist’s Chrysanthemum. Shasta Daisies love a well-drained sunny spot and will survive drought well.
We are used to buying African Daisies (Osteospermum) as half-harder summer bedding but there are a few winter hardy ones to find. The white “Lady Leitrim” has been in my family’s gardens for at least four generations and always survives even the hardest winter provided the soil is welldrained. She will flower from May to early winter. There’s sure to be a member of daisy family to suit your garden; keep an eye open for those lovely flowers. Air Awnings at Cannock Caravan Accessories Inflatable awnings certainly make life easier, gone are the days of lost, bent or damaged frames and the stress of a time consuming construction of a full awning. No need for traditional metal frames with individual poles, rigid airframes are now used which are exceptionally strong. The airframe can be inflated and deflated in minutes using the easy to use high volume manual pump that is supplied with the awning. Alternatively a 12v electric pump can be purchased to make the job even easier. Come and see us for all your caravan accessories, we have a large selection of traditional and air awnings on display including Kampa, Dorema, Isabella and many more. One happy customer who purchased a Kampa Air 390 was Malcolm Griffin from Cannock he said “Having always had an awning with poles, it was great to just plug the air awning into the pump and within 5 minutes the awning was up. Also very easy and convenient to take down. Would definitely recommend an Air Awning to any caravan owners! RECIPE

confit duck
I love the combination of roasted duck with a hint of star anise and that it matches so perfectly well with celeriac, especially when roasted. This dish is becoming very popular at the dinner parties I do. I think people are becoming a little more adventurous with different flavours and this shows from what they order off my menu. Try it yourself or hire me to come and cook it for you if you like. This is for a casual family service style dinner party but It can be served in a more formal way or you can adjust it to create a really lovely salad. I think it is quite simply the perfect combination of big flavours all on one plate. EquipmEnt: • 1 deep roasting dish (300mm x 200mm and 100mm deep ideally) • A roll of strong kitchen foil • Tongs • Thick oven cloth • Food processor • Spatula • Chopping board • Cooks knife • Pestle and mortar 40 24

Blue Ginger INDIAN RESTAURANT RE-OPENS AFTER TRANSFORMATION Having dined at Blue Ginger previously, my partner and I were excited to be returning after the restaurant refurbishment. We parked on the large free car park which is to the front of the restaurant and made our way inside. “Wow, what a transformation” Welcoming us into the restaurant, Abdul Karim the owner of Blue Ginger explained that he and his staff had been running the restaurant for their 4th year, and are very excited to welcome back new and returning customers after being closed since September 2015. Abdul said “We want to welcome back all of our friends/customers to the newly refurbished restaurant, we also have some great offers available” We were shown to our table, and given the menus. Aziz, our waiter asked if we would like to order drinks, we both opted for our favourite, Kingfisher lager which is served on draught. Whilst browsing through the menu the waiter explained that all the main dishes including the specials were 2 for 1 (Monday to Wednesday when dining in the restaurant) and also a 5 course meal which includes Popadom, Starter, Main Meal, Rice or Nan and a coffee for just £9.95 per person Sunday & Thursday only, when dining in the restaurant. My partner and I were absolutely spoilt for choice, the menu has something for everyone, whether it is a traditional Indian dish or a dish off the specials section of the menu, which I must say sounded very tasty!! Traditional starters are priced at £2.95 - £4.95 and fusion appetizers from £3.50 - £9.95. Main courses start at £5.95 - £10.95. Aziz returned to our table to take our order and was very helpful and recommended dishes to us after asking what our preferences were. 42
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | APRIL 2016
For starters I chose chicken tikka with my partner going for the king prawn puri which was described as mediterranean large prawns fried with onions, tomatoes and selected herbs, moderately spiced and served on puri bread. For our main courses I wanted to try a different dish, so off the specials I went for the Relish Chicken which is chicken prepared with a special blend of spice, cooked in a coriander relish with a touch of garlic & ginger. My partner chose the Garlic Chilli Chicken which is a hot dish cooked with garlic and green chilli in exotic spices. We also chose Pilau rice and a Peshwari Nan to accompany our meal.
We ordered more drinks whilst our food was being prepared and we both mentioned how much we liked the new décor which is very modern, spacious and contemporary. There is also a very relaxed feel and the staff are very polite, helpful and professional. Our starters arrived and they looked and tasted scrumptious! We were both looking forward to our main dishes and when they came we were very impressed. Both dishes were beautifully presented and we couldn’t wait to tuck in! Everything was cooked to perfection and if we had to describe it in one word it would be ‘delicious!’
Once finished we both said that was quite possibly one of the best Indian meals we had been for. We ordered a desert each and this was this perfect ending to a great evening. Abdul then presented us with an extra desert, to celebrate the 4th birthday of Staffordshire Outlook. GUILDHALL TO BE INVOLVED IN CHEESE, ALE & MORE FESTIVAL PUTTING OUT A CALL TO GET PRODUCERS INVOLVED For the first time the Cheese, Ale and More festival will include attractions based in the Guildhall Shopping Centre and are putting out a call to food and drinks producers to get involved. The centre will host a range of quality foods and drinks giving visitors the ability to enjoy a glass of wine and beer on site as well as to enjoy at home. Anne Graham, Marketing Manager for the Guildhall said “We are really excited to be involved in this prestigious event. We have started to sign-up local producers but are still looking for more to come into the Guildhall and would encourage anybody interested to contact us.” The Festival, which takes place on 20th and 21st May 2016 in Stafford’s Market Square has Cheese makers, breweries and local food producers filling the Market Square in Stafford, with a fantastic range of products and a fine array of artisan food. The event proved a huge success in 2015 attracting tens of thousands of people to the town and so an extra day has been added as it returns for a third year.

£35.99
Juniper is prevalent – as it should be – but a strong lemony coriander reminds us of a deep pine forest on a hot Summer stroll – earthy notes and warm orange blossom faintly joining in. Served best with your favourite tonic and a slice of lemon.
BUS 509 PINK GRAPEFRUIT GIN £43.99
Our first selection features some great Gins to get you in the mood for summer and some classic whites and reds that will compliment any occasion. Add in a local rose and we have something for everyone this month.
Packed with citrus notes, this Buss No.509 Gin features red Californian grapefruit as a botanical, along with Juniper, Coriander, Liquorice, Angelica, Vanilla, Cardamom, Iris, Orange and Lemon. Bright and flavoursome, this Belgian gin would make for a fine aperitif or serve with fever tree tonic over loads of ice and a pink grapefruit slice to finish.
LOUIS LATOUR BROUILLY £13.25
Having a lovely deep garnet colour. The nose reveals aromas of pear-drops and banana, typical of the Gamay varietal. It is round and smooth with nice balance and lasting flavours
SECRET MALBEC £9.99 Malbec very much as you picture it: Full and juicy, smooth and satisfying, and with the guaranteed trademark long, long length. Wine this good won’t be much of a Secret for long.
WAVE RIDER SAUVIGNON BLANC £10.50 Fresh and crisp with a great combination of tropical fruits and grassy herbaceous characters plus a ripe citrusy freshness on the finish. A perfect Marlborough Sauvignon

La Minky The Smooth Operators BARE TO BE DIFFERENT Here at La Minky we pride ourselves on our professionalism and our high level of skilled treatments. One area we surpass in is our waxing treatments. We are specialists in all areas of waxing with particular knowledge in intimate hair removal. Our in house specialist June Laing (salon owner) has been a beauty therapist and owned her own business for over 10 years. During her career June branched out and made a move into the intimate waxing field and initially trained with Hive in Brazilian Bikini waxing and then in London with Kim Lawless waxer to the stars. With years of experience under her belt June has mastered technique and client comfort during waxing of all parts of the body. Much care has been put into the choice of products used for hair removal within the salon. In 2011 June registered with the Perron Rigot Expert Network and has been using these waxes ever since. With 30 years of innovation Perron Rigot is a renowned French creator of
Intimate Waxing
Due to the sensitive nature of intimate waxing we offer a free consultation prior to treatment and advice on any area of waxing you are concerned about. If you do decide to try intimate waxing we recommend you exfoliate gently 3 days prior to hair removal and allow the hairs to grow for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to treatment. On the day of treatment the skin is prepared with Blue Lotion, a low
alcohol cleanser especially recommended for delicate areas and sensitive skin, before adding a few drops of Jasmine Oil to ensure the wax clings to the hairs and not the skin. After treatment the waxed area is to be kept clean, avoiding heat and friction for 24-48 hours. We advise that you do not apply any deodorants, body sprays, make-up, perfume or lotions to the waxed area during that period. However we do recommend the use of Lemon Myrtle multi-purpose liquid soap (sold in salon) to tackle possible ingrowing hairs and post waxing irritation. It is made from all natural ingredients, suitable for sensitive skin, contains Lemon Myrtle essential oils, has 30% more antibacterial properties than T-tree oil and can be used as an invigorating body wash that cleanses and protects the skin. Finally a few days after your appointment gently exfoliate up to 3 times a week, moisturise every day to keep skin soft and smooth.

high quality wax. The range includes hypoallergenic waxes, moisturising natural waxes, strip and non-strip waxes, scented and unscented. The waxes are perfect for both male and female waxing treatments including intimate waxing. We use non-strip waxing in the salon specifically for intimate hair removal as the waxes literally shrink wrap the hair, removing the entire hair with its roots from the follicle, leaving the skin undamaged. Since the wax sticks to the hair and not the skin it takes the smack like sting out of the process you get with strip waxing hair removal. We have found regular waxing with this method weakens and slows down hair regrowth and produces results that last longer.

Competition Staffordshire County Show World famous motorcyclists as young as five years old will entertain the crowds in the main ring at this year’s Staffordshire County Show, organisers said today. The Imps motorcycle display team will be thrilling more than 70,000 people during the two day event on June 1st and 2nd. The family show to be held at Staffordshire County Showground on Weston Road in Stafford will see The Imps perform in the main ring twice each day.
The Imps, known for their smart red tunics and their spectacular show, will perform at 1pm and 4.30pm on June 1st and 1pm and 3.30pm on the second day of the show. The show has once again secured sponsorship from South Staffordshire College which has expanded its Animal Zone for this year’s event. Mr Williams added: “We of course want sunshine every year and two days of it would be rather brilliant but whatever the weather there’s still plenty to do and fun to be had. “If the sun is shining the outdoor picnic area is beautiful but the indoor one is perfect if it’s a little damp under foot. “The Woodfest area and country pursuits area is a hive of activity by people of all ages and of course the main ring offers non-stop entertainment. “Whilst areas such as the food hall and the cookery theatre hosted in conjunction with the Staffordshire Chef’s Forum is set to return and attract the crowds once again. “This is definitely a show not to be missed and a must for all families during the half term school holidays - we had many people return for the second day last year as they had enjoyed the first so much and had not got to see everything as there was so much to see and do.”
Advance tickets go on sale on April 1st from the showground office or through the website http://www.staffscountyshowground.co.uk/ staffordshire-county-show/ticket-information/ and from all other outlets from May 1st. Organisers advised people to buy their tickets in advance to avoid queues on the day following the record breaking crowds last year. April is here and what are we all wary of? APRIL FOOLS’ DAY OF COURSE! But where did the tradition arise? The custom of setting aside a day for the playing of harmless pranks upon neighbours is recognized everywhere. Some precursors of April Fools’ Day include the Roman festival of Hilaria, the Holi festival of India, and the Medieval Feast of Fools. Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (1392) contains the first recorded association between 1 April and foolishness; so once again there is nothing new. One of the most famous ‘April Fools’ day pranks was perpetrated by that most august organisation - The BBC. In 1957, they broadcast a film in their Panorama current affairs series purporting to show Swiss farmers picking freshly-grown spaghetti, in what they called the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest. The BBC were later flooded with requests to purchase a spaghetti plant, forcing them to declare the film a hoax on the news the next day April is another month with a great deal of symbolism, being the first month of Spring, but why ‘April’? The Romans gave it the Latin name Aprilis but the derivation of this name is uncertain. The traditional etymology is from the verb aperire, “to open”, in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to “open”, which is supported by comparison with the modern Greek use of (ánixi) (opening) for spring. Since some of the Roman months were named in honour of divinities, and as April was sacred to the goddess Venus, it has been suggested that Aprilis was originally her month Aphrilis, from her equivalent Greek goddess Aphrodite. The Anglo-Saxons called April astre-mona. The Venerable Bede says in The Reckoning of Time that this month astre is the root of the word Easter. So are you ready to leave the dull and dismal days of winter behind and welcome your own personal ‘opening’? We at The Chase CACI Clinic are perfectly placed to help you, both in physical location plus the services and products we can offer. We have our two wonderful CACI machines which use modern non-invasive technology to stimulate those tired muscles after the cold, wet, miserable winters days which really don’t give anyone cause to smile. The Ultimate machine provides treatments for the face and some body procedures. The Quantum Machine also works on the face and offers an additional range of body treatments. 52

Stretch Mark Reduction that really works! HELPING PEOPLE FEEL BETTER IN THEIR SKIN FOR OVER 20 YEARS Unsightly stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body and they can often occur as a result of weight gain. Stretch marks pose no health risk and don’t compromise your body’s ability to function healthily. They are most likely to appear in places where fat is stored, including the thighs, breasts, abdomen, upper arms and buttocks. Much of the blame for the appearance of stretch marks can be laid at your parent’s door; a significant factor when considering why one individual may have them and not another, is their inherited genes. Weight gain from pregnancy or dieting, loss of skin elasticity and good old fashioned ‘bad luck’ all play their part. However they arise, the effect of stretch marks on self-confidence is immense and debilitating. The Cottage Surgery - established in 1992, has over 20years valuable experience in treating a variety of skin types with diverse problems, from acne and acne scarring to pigmentation and sun damage. They are at the forefront of innovative treatment methods and thoroughly test and monitor new programmes for efficacy and value for money. They are proud to be able to offer a non-invasive treatment that effectively reduces the appearance of unsightly stretch marks.
only devices, not the short needle devices often imported and unregulated via China! Dermaroller is a registered single-use medical device which is NOT available in salons or outlets without qualified staff. The Clinical Dermaroller used at The Cottage Surgery contain 192 sterile scalpel sharp needles, each one being 1.5 mm long and set at an exact angle of 87.5°. The rollers have been developed, to provide the maximum effect, with the minimum trauma, by stimulating a wound healing response deep within the skin, generating type 3collagen without the risk of permanent scarring. Micro Needling Therapy can also hugely improve acne or atrophic scars, facial and décolleté lines and wrinkles, sun-damaged skin and pigmentation. Even the backs of hands respond beautifully! This has all been confirmed by independent clinical trials and provides an effective alternative to laser skin-resurfacing. Topical anaesthetic is applied to minimise discomfort and treatment takes around 1 hour depending on the size of the area. In most cases, skin can tolerate mineral make-up application on the same day and normally settles within 2 to 3 days. The generation of new collagen begins 6 weeks after and continues for up to 6 months.
Micro Needling Therapy
(MNT) is a highly effective treatment which stimulates new collagen to form at a deep level; it is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage, such as cuts, burns and other abrasions. Immediately after an injury to the skin, the body re-uses the damaged collagen and elastin fibres as well as other damaged skin components to produce new ones. The concept of ‘Skin Needling’ or ‘Collagen Induction Therapy’, Skin Needling allows for controlled induction of this self-repair mechanism. In turn, this re-models and tightens the skin, enhancing its architecture and improving overall skin appearance & texture. The Cottage Surgery has perfected the use of (MNT) using the Clinical Dermaroller to reduce the appearance of stretch marks for many of its clients. These are the professional use 56

Skoda Yeti:1.2 litre TSI SE
BY ROB TAYLOR
ONE THAT IS AS GOOD OFF-ROAD AS ON THE SCHOOL RUN
A car that lives up to its marketing hype is usually as elusive as Bigfoot himself. But the Skoda Yeti is a rare beast; one that stands tall amidst its manufacturer’s claims, never skulking ashamedly in the undergrowth. Until now such a vehicle – one that is genuinely as good at off-road fun as on the school run – has held near mythic status, in the sub-25k mid-size crossover market. However, the Yeti somehow manages to successfully straddle the two disparate worlds, mixing oil and water. that’s if you buy the range-topping 4x4 150 bhp diesel variant, of course. But the reality is that most crossover’s see more supermarket car parks than rugged mountain dales and consequently have to drive a very fine line indeed, making sure not to disappoint the many who prefer to keep their wheels firmly fixed on tarmac’d terra firma. This model – the 2WD 1.2 litre TSI SE – has a 108 bhp turbo’d petrol engine, allied to a five-speed ‘box. It has a frugal, four-cylinder powerplant that delivers, at best, 51.mpg but never lacks the requisite performance needed for daily life, mainly because 1 60
STAFFORDSHIRE OUTLOOK | MARCH 2016 APRIL 2016
maximum torque arrives at a very useable 2000 rpm. This Yeti boasts the now ubiquitous start/stop function to help record a Co2 figure of 128 g/km, as well as a system designed to employ surplus energy from the alternator to power ancillary engine components and appease our E.U overlords. The two-wheel drive option is more than capable in the main but, should you wish to opt for the 4x4 alternative, you’ll find that the Yeti is as adept as its namesake at handling treacherous terrain. But that’s not to say that the ride and the chassis isn’t sharp enough on the road: it handles every twist and turn, pothole and bump, with considerable aplomb; giving short shrift to the local council’s ambivalence towards road-surface maintenance. The steering is involving without being demanding; the gearshift, slick and effortless. Clearly Skoda’s engineers have given a lot of consideration to how the Yeti feels, never accepting that the drive need only be incidental. Then again, if comfort and practicality are rather more your bag, then the Yeti monsters the competition in this regard also. Models are now available with
the usual S, SE and SEL spec, that between them include leather seats, air-conditioning, seven air-bags, park-assist sensors, Bluetooth, Ipod connectivity and ESP. There is also satellite navigation with a large 6.5” screen. In addition, there is a commodious cabin, equipped with substantial and sleek fitments. A versatile rear-seating system affords the user more options on seating configuration than your average school classroom; seats swivel, lift, rotate and can be removed altogether to offer van-like proportions. Prices start from as little as £17,000 and for that you get a very sound core product, with plenty of choice to ‘specup’ in to infinity. And Skoda offers a range of petrol and diesel engines to suit every driver, from heavy-footed spendthrifts to ultra-conservative Ecowarriors. Even though the Yeti is in a perennially awkward class of vehicle – SUV/ crossover – there is no trace of identity crisis, no one aspect in its design seems to have been unduly compromised. There are no flashes of pretentiousness or aspirational affectation: this is the very best in unfussy, honest motoring for the 21st Century.

What is an ECU Remap
Remapping is the most common term used to describe the process of fine tuning modern engines, for optimal efficiency.
Why have a Remap
More and more ordinary drivers are becoming aware of, and benefiting from engine tuning aimed at engine efficiency and improvements in MPG.Drivers benefit from smoother acceleration, removal of flats pots, improved towing, safer over taking and valuable savings every time they fill up with fuel.
Savings!
Typically diesel drivers enjoy improved fuel efficiency of 10-20% At current pump prices this can represent a saving of £6 - £12 every time they fill up (60Ltr Tank) and of course when prices rise again, the savings would be even greater. Use a Professional for peace of mind If you care about the results you achieve and the safety of your vehicle, you should choose your engine tuner with the same care as you might choose a doctor! You wouldn’t let someone who bought a £40 doctors kit off of the internet carry out brain surgery would you? Use the same logic when you have your car tuned, choose a professional.
