A recent YouGov survey shows that nearly three quarters of the population don’t know what the inheritance tax threshold is – and Karen Babington of Preferred Will Writers based in Telford says that means people aren’t seeking the right advice... With the average house price now reaching £188,000 in the UK and £514,000 in London more and more homeowners’ assets will be subject to inheritance tax. Yet, according to a new YouGov survey, 70% of Britons don’t know what the inheritance tax threshold is – and 24% believe it’s at a lower level than the actual £325,000 it’s currently set at.

Karen Babington of Preferred Will Writers based in Telford warns people aren’t seeking the advice, when it comes to inheritance tax.
In fact, there’s no tax to be paid on estates valued at below £325,000 – but go above that and the tax rate is 40% (36% if the deceased has left 10% of their estate to charity). Inheritance tax may, however, be mitigated with the right estate planning advice so if you believe your estate is worth close to or more than £325,000 it’s worth contacting a professional to help you with the sums and securing your family’s future.

Who will look after your children if you die?
It is a common assumption that your next of kin will be granted guardianship of your children should the worst happen. However if both a child’s parents die and there’s no valid will and therefore no appointed guardian children could be put in foster care until the courts decide who they should live with. And with 24,000 children a year experiencing the death of a parent (source: charity Winston’s Wish) and one in five people dying intestate according to a 2015 YouGov survey, do you want to put your children in that situation?
Karen Babington of Preferred Will Writers based in Telford warns of the importance of making a will to safeguard your children’s future....
