“This is a great hire for East Texas Baptist. Josh was a tremendous addition to our staff when he joined us for the 2009 season. He will bring great enthusiasm and passion along with a tremendous work ethic and outstanding football knowledge to East Texas Baptist. It’s very gratifying to see guys who work hard and do things the right way get rewarded for their efforts. I’m very happy for Josh and his family. He will do a great job there.” Les Miles, head coach Louisiana State University
Collegiate Coaching Stops Louisiana State University (2009) Southern Mississippi (2003-04; 2006) Nicholls State University (2007-08) Ouchita Baptist University (2005) University of Arkansas-Monticello (2010) Southeastern Oklahoma State University (2012) East Texas is the new home for Joshua Eargle as the newest head football coach hired in January 2013 bringing NCAA Division I and II coaching experience to the Tiger program. Eargle’s roots are originally from East Texas as he has made coaching stops in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma before coming back home. “I am very pleased to have Joshua Eargle as the new Head Football Coach at East Texas Baptist University,” stated Director of Athletics Kent Reeves. “Coach Eargle is a solid Christian man who will motivate our young men to be great both on the field and off. We are excited to have Joshua and his family coming to join the ETBU family.” Eargle is very familiar with East Texas and recruited this area for Nicholls State, the University of Arkansas-Monticello, and Ouachita Baptist University. He has also coached in the area as the defensive coordinator for Hallsville High School in 2011 when they were Bi-District finalists. Coming from Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he was a Texas Sports Writers 4A All-State lineman, he played for his uncle, Chuck King, before moving on to the University of Memphis where he was a three-year letterman. Coaching both sides of the ball, Eargle has been an offensive and defensive coordinator in his young career. In 2012, he was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State (NCAA DII) and served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas-Monticello (NCAA DII) in 2010. “With Coach Eargle’s experience as a recruiting coordinator, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator, he will bring a good working knowl-
4
edge of the game to our program,” stated Reeves. Post season games have also graced Eargle at the NCAA Division I level along with conference championships. He has coached in four bowl games, winning two as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi in the 2007 GMAC Bowl and the 2004 New Orleans Bowl. He took part in the 2010 Capital One Bowl on the staff at Louisiana State University and the 2003 Liberty Bowl at Southern Mississippi. In his first year as a graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi, he was a part of the 2003 Conference USA Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. In his second stint at Southern Mississippi, they won the Conference USA-East Championship in 2006 at 6-2. He has made coaching stops at the NCAA Division I BCS (Bowl Championship Series) level at Southern Mississippi (’03, ’04, ’06) and Louisiana State University (’09). In 2007 and 2008, he coached at the NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Series) level at Nicholls State. Making stops at NCAA Division II programs, he has also coached at Southeastern Oklahoma State (’12), the University of Arkansas-Monticello (’10), and Ouachita Baptist University (’05). Under his guidance, he has had 10 players earn first-team all-conference and 17 players earn an all-conference award. At every program he has coached for, at least one player has earned a first-team all-conference award. At Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2012 as the defensive coordinator, his pass defense was the 11th best in NCAA Division II and first in the Great American Conference. The overall defense finished 29th in the nation out of 156 programs and was third in the Great Amercian Conference. The 2001 graduate of the University of Memphis was an offensive guard that earned the Top Tiger Award which was presented by head coach Tommy West. He finished with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He then earned a Master’s Degree in sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004. He is married to Kristen and they have two daughters.

YEAR IN REVIEW NOTES ALL-STARS
Jamaine Sherman, Jacob Alford, Chris Frazier, and Cory McNeil extended their careers one more game as they all had the chance to play in post-season allstar games. Sherman played in the National Bowl in Florida while Alford was a member of the D3 Senior Classic Bowl in Virginia and McNeil in the American Bowl in Minnesota. Sherman played for the Red Nation under ETBU offensive coordinator Scotty Walden and finished with four catches and one touchdown. He was named the Red Nation offensive MVP for his play. ETBU coaches Lee Grimes and Robert Churchman also participated in the bowl game as coaches for the Red Nation. Alford played with the best NCAA Division III athletes in Salem, Va., as an offensive lineman for the south team. They fell to the north, 10-7. At the Metrodome in Minnesota for the All-American Bowl, McNeil and Frazier were a part of Team Stripes. McNeil was a punter/kicker with NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA players while Frazier played as a tight end and linebacker.
2-0 Start
ETBU set a school record right at the beginning of the season by starting off 2-0. It was the first-ever 2-0 start in the history of the program. ETBU took wins over Austin College, 52-34, and Southwestern University, 56-10, on the road. Four single game team records were also set in these first two games of the season in passing yards, passing touchdowns, total offensive plays, and first downs.
New Era in ETBU Football
Joshua Eargle started his tenure as head coach at ETBU by changing the culture right away. New uniforms and a new look came about with his hiring along with a new offense. He also helped to initiate Tiger Alley for tailgating before the game and GameTime Radio before the game playing in the stadium for a family, friendly atmosphere. He became the first coach to have a team start off 2-0, too.
Records Broken
Under first year head coach Joshua Eargle, there were several team, single game, and individual records broken in 2013. Six single game records, five individual single season records, six team records, and three single game records were all broken. The single game records broken were rushing attempts (69), passing yards (503), passing touchdowns (6 – tied), total offensive plays (98), total offense (683), and first downs (31). Five individual single season records were broken in completion percentage (Josh Warbington), Efficiency rating (Josh Warbington), receptions (Tyler Bates),
receiving yards (Jamaine Sherman), and receiving touchdowns (Tyler Bates). ETBU broke six single season records with four on offense. The four offensive records broken were passing yards (2,950), passing touchdowns (27), pass yards per game (295), and first downs (231). ETBU also set records for most points allowed per game (42.4) and most yards allowed per game (479.3). Individually, three single game records were broken by Josh Warbington and Tyler Bates. Warbington set new game records for passing touchdowns (5) and pass completions (37). Bates set a new record for receptions in a game at 17.

Bates was a second team selection at two positions in wide receiver and return specialist. Michael Garcia (OL), Josh Warbington (QB), Drew Benge (LB), David Jaynes (DL), and Roemo Botelua (DB) were on the honorable mention team. Jacob Alford was then voted the ASC’s Outstanding Sportsman for football. Bates and Glovier both were named ASC Player of the Weeks at different times.
