LAST YEAR

HOWARD PAYNE 47, ETBU 36

BROWNWOOD, Texas – A third quarter offensive surge by Howard Payne University was just enough to hold off East Texas Baptist University, 47-36. Howard Payne had a 24-20 advantage at the half and then scored 20 points in the third quarter before ETBU pulled back within eight in the fourth quarter. ETBU falls to 2-5 on the year and is 0-3 in the American Southwest Conference. Jamaine Sherman produced another career day as he pulled ETBU with 16, 44-28, on a 45-yard touchdown reception which was his second of the day. He finished the day with 13 receptions for 258 yards. Tyler Bates also had great day receiving with a career-high 17 receptions, which breaks the single game ETBU record of 14 set by Kwame’ Spikes last year vs. Willamette, for 108 yards. Josh Warbington threw for 418 yards going 36-of-51 with two passing touchdowns. Toi Glover led ETBU’s rushing game with 68 yards on 16 attempts and two touchdowns. In the first half each team would answer each other in scoring. On the opening drive of the game, ETBU drove down to the Howard Payne 17-yard line but turned the ball over on downs after missing a fourth-down conversion. Howard Payne then drove 78 yards with nine plays finishing with a 22-yard field goal. Answering right back, ETBU countered with a 33-yard drive that took 2:57 as Cory McNeil hit his first of two field goals on the day from 44-yards out. Just seconds into the second quarter, ETBU attempted a 36-yard field goal that hit the post and bounced out as Howard Payne regained control of the ball. Eight plays and 80-yards later the Yellowjackets had a seven-point lead when Richard Young found Fuentes in the endzone from 39-yards out. Fighting right back, Warbington guided ETBU down the field for a 66-yard scoring drive ending in a Glover four-yard run that tied the game at 10. Glover and John Gable combined for 24 yards rushing on that drive as Sherman had 42-yards receiving. Continuing the shootout in the second quarter Howard Payne once again took a seven-point lead, 17-10, in just 1:56 covering 75 yards. With 6:25 left in the second quarter, Sherman was on the receiving end of a 34-yard pass from Warbington that tied up the game at 17. After both teams swapped possessions and punted the ball, Howard Payne took the lead for good, 24-17 with just 28-yard drive. On a four-and-15, ETBU’s fake punt did not covert and Howard Payne took advantage of it. Nine plays later, Young tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Dove for the lead with just 43 seconds left in the half.ETBU would not go easily finishing the half on a 30-yard field goal by McNeil. ETBU drove all the way down to the Howard Payne nine-yard line and had to kick the field goal before time ran out facing just a four-point deficit, 24-20. The difference came in the third quarter when Howard Payne capitalized on big plays. Howard Payne’s first possession only took 34 seconds as Young rushed for a 59-yard touchdown to extend the led to 10 after missing the extra point, 30-20. ETBU had the ball only 50 seconds when Howard Payne’s Shaw forced a fumble at the 46-yard yard line. Howard Payne recovered and capitalized with a four-play drive extending their lead to 17, 37-20. Two possessions later for Howard Payne they executed another long drive by going 72 yards as Young completed a 17-yard pass to Mica making it 44-20. Things became exciting in the fourth quarter for ETBU. After seven minutes of each team punting the ball, there was a 30-minute lightening delay. This would be the third game this season that ETBU would have a lightening delay. Cooling down for 30 minutes and recharged, ETBU came storming out scoring the 16 points in a little over three minutes to pull within eight, 44-36. Taking over with 8:08 on the clock, ETBU went 70-yards in just over two minutes. After five passes in the drive, the sixth was to Sherman for 45-yards as ETBU was within 16 points, 44-28. Executing a perfect onsides kick was Cory McNeil as Nate Taylor came up with the recovery about 13-yards down the field. Warbington’s first pass of the drive was 42-yarder to Sherman placing ETBU on the nine-yard line. Sherman then caught the next pass at the two-yard line which led to a Glover rushing touchdown two plays later pulling to within eight points, 44-36. Trying to re-script the same onsides kick, Howard Payne was ready and returned it to ETBU’s 10-yard line and then ran time off the clock to 2:18 hitting a 31-yard field goal extending the lead to 47-36. ETBU’s offensive magic had run out on their next possession as they turned the ball over on downs on their own 24-yard line as Howard Payne ran out the clock. Howard Payne finished with 525 yards of total offense while ETBU had 514 yards.
