MARSHALL, Texas – All cylinders were clicking for Hardin-Simmons University (3-3/12) as East Texas Baptist University (2-4/0-2) couldn’t find their offensive grove dropping the homecoming contest, 55-17. After a 7-7 tie early in the first quarter, Hardin-Simmons scored two touchdowns in just over a 30-second span to end the quarter and make it 21-7 as they took command of the game. ETBU had to play from behind from that point on. ETBU’s offense struggled netting only 252 yards of total offense with 172 yards in the air and 80 on the ground. It was the lowest amount of yards all season for ETBU offensively. ETBU also lost the ball three times with one interception and two fumbles. HardinSimmons finished with 537 yards of total offense with an even attack of 250 yards rushing and 287 passing. Toi Glover finished with 70 yards rushing and a touchdown on 20 carries. Jamaine Sherman had the only other touchdown on the night and collected 72 yards receiving. Tyler Bates led the receiving core with 83 yards on eight receptions. Drew Benge came away with 13 tackles as Devin Mack posted 11 tackles. Dominque Bailey had five break ups on the night.

Hardin-Simmons’ Tevin Mitchell produced another 100-yard rushing game with 145 yards and three touchdowns. Jessie Ramos recorded 86 yards receiving and Josh Christian threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Hardin-Simmons struck the goal line first with 11:14 on the clock but ETBU answered right back with a five play-52 yard drive that took only 2:01. Glover finished off the drive with a seven-yard run as ETBU tied up the game with 9:06 left in the first quarter. After eight minutes of play, Hardin-Simmons took advantage of stopping ETBU on a fourth down the ETBU 29-yard and eight plays later took the lead for good, 14-7. After the ensuing kickoff, ETBU fumbled the ball away on the first play as Hardin-Simmons recovered it at the ETBU 30-yard line. It took only 22 seconds to score for Hardin-Simmons as they went up 21-7 with 38 seconds left in the first quarter. That set the tone for the rest of the game as ETBU never recovered. ETBU’s Cory McNeil hit a career long 47-yard field goal just under three minutes into the second quarter cutting Hardin-Simmons lead to 11, 21-10. That is as close as ETBU would come the rest of the first half as the Cowboys had two more touchdowns before the halftime. Their next touchdown was on a 26-yard pass and then Christian ran in the other score making it 34-10 at the half. Scoring twice within 20 seconds of each other, again, in the third quarter, Hardin-Simmons extended their lead to 48-10. Mitchell ran in his third touchdown of the night with 9:29 left in the quarter and then 27 seconds later Christian threw another touchdown pass for the 38-point advantage. After Hardin-Simmons had their final score of the game at the 5:04 mark, ETBU’s Josh Warbington threw an eight-yard pass to Sherman for the second touchdown of the game. That touchdown came with 2:23 left in the game as homecoming came to an end.
