East Texas is home for Joshua Eargle as the third head football coach for ETBU since the program was started back up in 2000. In January 2013 he was selected to rebuild the program and brings NCAA Division I and II coaching experience to the Tiger program. His roots are originally from East Texas in Sulphur Springs as he has made coaching stops in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.
He has made coaching stops at the NCAA Division I BCS (Bowl Championship Series) level at Southern Mississippi (’03, ’04, ’06) and Louisiana State University (’09). In 2007 and 2008, he coached at the NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Series) level at Nicholls State. Making stops at NCAA Division II programs, he has also coached at Southeastern Oklahoma State (’12), the University of Arkansas-Monticello (’10), and Ouachita Baptist University (’05).
Eargle is very familiar with East Texas and recruited this area for Nicholls State, the University of Arkansas-Monticello, and Ouachita Baptist University. He has also coached in the area as the defensive coordinator for Hallsville High School in 2011 when they were Bi-District finalists. Coming from Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he was a Texas Sports Writers 4A AllState lineman, he played for his uncle, Chuck King, before moving on to the University of Memphis where he was a three-year letterman. Coaching both sides of the ball, Eargle has been an offensive and defensive coordinator in his young career. In 2012, he was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State (NCAA DII) and served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas-Monticello (NCAA DII) in 2010. Post season games have also graced Eargle at the NCAA Division I level along with conference championships. He has coached in four bowl games, winning two as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi in the 2007 GMAC Bowl and the 2004 New Orleans Bowl. He took part in the 2010 Capital One Bowl on the staff at Louisiana State University and the 2003 Liberty Bowl at Southern Mississippi. As a graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi, he was a part of the 2003 Conference USA Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. In his second stint at Southern Mississippi, they won the Conference USA-East Championship in 2006 at 6-2.
Under his guidance, he has had 10 players earn first-team all-conference and 17 players earn an all-conference award. At every program he has coached for, at least one player has earned a first-team all-conference award. The 2001 graduate of the University of Memphis was an offensive guard that earned the Top Tiger Award which was presented by head coach Tommy West. He finished with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He then earned a Master’s Degree in sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004. He is married to Kristen and they have two daughters.
Collegiate Coaching Stops Louisiana State University (2009) Southern Mississippi (2003-04; 2006) Nicholls State University (2007-08) Ouchita Baptist University (2005) University of Arkansas-Monticello (2010) Southeastern Oklahoma State University (2012)
“This is a great hire for East Texas Baptist. Josh was a tremendous addition to our staff when he joined us for the 2009 season. He will bring great enthusiasm and passion along with a tremendous work ethic and outstanding football knowledge to East Texas Baptist. It’s very gratifying to see guys who work hard and do things the right way get rewarded for their efforts. I’m very happy for Josh and his family. He will do a great job there.”

YEAR IN REVIEW NOTES
WARBINGTON BEST IN D3 Josh Warbington led the nation in passing yards with 3,580 yards (358 per game) while also throwing for 30 touchdowns and completing over 66% of his passes. His season high in yards was 426 at Texas Lutheran and his season high in touchdowns was five against Millsaps. He had five 400 yard passing games including three in a row against Louisiana College, Sul Ross State and Hardin-Simmons. He finished the year breaking a combined 24 records that include individual game and season and team game and season.
Xavier Davis became a disruptive force on the interior defensive line, totaling 30 total tackles on the season with eight tackles for loss. He added four sacks, including a season high two against Sul Ross State. His three quarterback hurries against Howard Payne set a season high.
ORNELAS STADIUM ETBU played six home games in 2014 and went 4-2 at home. The four wins were the most by any team at home since 2003 when ETBU won the ASC Championship. ETBU defeated Austin College, Southwestern, Millsaps College, and Sul Ros State.
Desmond Oliver led the team in sacks with six, including a season high three against Southwestern. He also forced two fumbles in the game and had 3.5 tackles for loss. His season high in tackles was 10 against Millsaps, with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Because of his play, he was a semi-finalist for the NCAA Division III Player of the Year award (Gagliardi Trophy). He is the first player from ETBU to be a semi-finalist. He was also a USA Football Network All-American, D3Football.com All-South Region third team selection, and an All-ASC second team selection.
All-ASC HONOREES In a year where many school records fell, twelve players were given ASC honors at the end of the year. The prolific offense had three members named to the ASC first team. Receivers Tyler Bates and Stephen Alfred both made it after they both had thousand yard seasons, two of only three players to gain 1,000 or more receiving yards this year. Alfred was first in the conference with 1,210 yards and Bates second with 1,156. Kendall Roberson also was also named to the first team after finishing third in the conference in yards with 629 in just nine games. He was second in yards per game with 69.9, trailing only Kerry Sloan of Hardin-Simmons.
RECORDS BROKEN ETBU had a combined 31 records either tied or broken in 2014. *tied the record Single Game - Invdividual Pass Completions: Josh Warbington (37 vs. HSU)* Passing Touchdowns: Josh Warbington (5 vs. Millsaps)* Receiving Touchdowns: Tyler Bates (3 vs. SRSU)* Interceptions: Steven Segler (2 vs. TLU)*
OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT vs. MILLSAPS ETBU set new program records with 68 points and 715 yards of offense against Millsaps. The Majors went 9-1 in 2013 and came off a win over Mt. St. Joseph before coming to Ornelas Stadium. ETBU’s big night started with Warbington’s career long passing touchdown—a 78 yard strike to R.J. Hester. Less than three minutes later ETBU got back on the board as Warbington hit Stephen Alfred for a 34 yard touchdown. Tyler Bates got in on the excitement as he threw his lone touchdown pass of the season to Roy Butler, good for 36 yards. Warbington tied the mark he set in the first quarter with another 78 yard touchdown pass, this one to Kendall Roberson. Warbington threw two more touchdowns—one to Bates and one to Evan Simpson. With a firm 54-15 lead at that point, Brandon Darjean scored on an 85 yard interception return for a touchdown, his first career interception and his first touchdown. Johnny Garrett capped off the night by scoring his first ETBU touchdown to make a final score of 68-15. IMPACT OFFENSIVE NEWCOMERS Stephen Alfred came to ETBU with only one year of eligibility left making it a year to remember. He led the team with 1,210 receiving yards which is a new single season record. He led the team with four multiple touchdown games and had seven 100+ yard games. His highest yardage game was at Louisiana College with 171 yards, followed closely by his performance at Texas Lutheran with 165 yards and two touchdowns. Kendall Roberson came in and started at running back in the season opener. After playing through an injury the next two weeks, Roberson got back on track with two huge games back to back at Texas Lutheran and against Howard Payne. He rushed for 172 yards against Texas Lutheran and topped that mark with 182 yards and three touchdowns against Howard Payne. He finished the season with 629 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.
