Dr. J. Blair Blackburn began serving as president of East Texas Baptist University in June 2015. President Blackburn brought over 24 years of experience in university leadership when he started at ETBU. He served in many leadership roles before his calling to the presidency at East Texas Baptist University, the last of which was at Dallas Baptist University as Executive Vice President. Dr. Blackburn’s visionary servant leadership and diverse experiences in campus operations, administrative affairs, student affairs, athletics, fundraising, and enrollment, empowers his service to guide ETBU into the future. In his relatively short-time as president, Dr. Blackburn has led ETBU to increased undergraduate and graduate enrollment, as well as expanded the number of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs offered at the University. He has advanced new partnerships with Marshall ISD and the City of Marshall, facilitated community improvements with ETBU’s Neighborhood Renewal Initiative, and expanded the University’s student servant leadership program to engage all ETBU undergraduate students in contributing one hour per week to volunteer community service. In addition to the 16 NCAA Division III athletic teams, Dr. Blackburn launched five new club sports for greater student involvement, including ice hockey, pom, bass fishing, acrobatics & tumbling, and cheer, as well as men’s and women’s golf at the NCAA Division III level. Along with enhancing the academic programs, spiritual development, student involvement, and servant leadership opportunities for students at ETBU, Dr. Blackburn is utilizing his unique passion for master planning, architecture, landscape, and interior design to beautify and renew the University’s campus. His experience and love for these aspects of university development were chronicled in Dr. Blackburn’s book, A City on a Hill: An Architectural History of Dallas Baptist University (2014). Prior to ETBU and his 20-year tenure of leadership at DBU, he served in three other institutions of higher learning in East Texas, including University of Texas at Tyler, Lon Morris College, and Paris Junior College. President Blackburn was raised in Minden, Louisiana but knows East Texas very well after attending Tyler Junior College and UT Tyler, and living in the area with his family for many years. President Blackburn and his wife, Michelle, celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary this year. They have three children: Taylor, Elizabeth Blair, and Parker. Dr. and Mrs. Blackburn are members of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. Dr. Blackburn earned an Associate of Arts from TJC, and was named as TJC’s Valuable Young Alumnus in 1999. In 1991, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Texas at Tyler, and was named as UT Tyler’s Distinguished Alumnus in 2016. Dr. Blackburn holds a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from Baylor University in 2000. President Blackburn is a man of deep faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. Upon assuming his role as president at East Texas Baptist University, he immediately involved the faculty and staff in 40 days of directed prayer to seek God’s heart for the University. He continues to shepherd the students, faculty, and staff in prayer as they seek God’s direction for the University. The Lord has given President Blackburn a vision for ETBU to serve and lead as a committed Christ-centered institution, dedicated to pursing God’s truths and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus. His primary focus is the intellectual development and spiritual formation of students to educate and equip them for God’s vocational call on their lives.
RYAN ERWIN VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Ryan Erwin has served as the Vice President for Athletics and Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University since August of 2016. Erwin previously served as Director of Athletics at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma, and Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas. In two years at ETBU, Erwin’s leadership has led to many upgrades consisting of the construction of the new softball clubhouse, the installation of artificial turf at Ornelas Stadium (football), Woods Field (baseball), and Taylor Field (softball), and a full remodel of the Maxwell Strength Center and the Dean Healthplex. The remodel included new equipment, flooring, and branding, while also adding padded outfield walls at the baseball and softball fields for enhanced player safety. ETBU also started the Tiger Athletic Mission Experience (TAME), which gives studentathletes the opportunity to travel internationally and share their faith through their God-given athletic talents and abilities. In addition, Erwin was instrumental in securing a licensing agreement with Learfield Licensing, negotiating a department wide exclusive Nike contract through BSN Sports, launching a new athletic website through Sidearm, increasing the ETBU student-athlete grade point average, and introducing an online ticketing system. Erwin’s experience in athletic leadership as Director of Athletics at two NCAA Division II programs has proven to strengthen ETBU’s athletic department. From his time at Rogers State University and Dallas Baptist University, Erwin has set higher standards in each position improving and increasing academic performance, athletic success, fund-raising, student engagement, community service, and branding. His most recent accomplishment was guiding Rogers State through their approval process to NCAA Division II from NAIA. He also secured a licensing agreement to protect the Rogers State athletic brand and launched an online athletic store selling their products. With 15 years of collegiate experience in administration from sports information, compliance, and administration, Erwin has been able to help mold and shape three departments along with being a part of numerous committees. He led the Heartland Conference as the chair of athletic director for eight years, was a member of the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Board of Directors, and served on the NCAA Division II Mentoring Program. Starting his athletic leadership career at Dallas Baptist University, Erwin spent 10 years as a Patriot working in several capacities. He worked his way up to Director of Athletics after starting as the Director of Sports Information and then Compliance Director. In 2006, he moved into the role as the Director of Athletics serving there for seven years. He was an integral part of the strategic planning and fundraising efforts to help improve athletic facilities, including the building of Horner Ballpark ($9 million baseball facility), $1.5 million renovation of Burg Gymnasium, construction of new athletic and intramural fields, expansion of athletic training and player development facilities, and remodeling of team locker and meeting room areas. He also oversaw the development of six club sports. Erwin also coached the DBU hockey team and was instrumental in the implementation of a comprehensive discipleship based ministry program and a global sports mission program. Erwin’s career has also had a major impact on academics and community service at all the universities. His emphasis on bettering the student-athlete improved the overall grade point average at Rogers State, Dallas Baptist, and ETBU. Being a part of the Claremore, Oklahoma community Erwin invested in the people and town around him. He spent time serving on the Threat Review and Assessment Committee (TARC), Rogers County Trust Authority, and the Rogers County Friends of Scouts and Children’s Advocacy Center. He and his wife, Kristy, have two children, Gage and Gentry, and live in Marshall. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Communication from DBU with a minor in Biblical Studies and Psychology. He also holds a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration. Erwin serves as an adjunct faculty member at ETBU and was a adjunct professor at DBU, and attends New Beginnings Baptist Church in Longview, Texas.

OCTOBER 7, 2017 BROWNWOOD, Texas – Dominating on both ends of the ball from start to finish, the East Texas Baptist University football team used 35 second half points in a 57-7 victory over Howard Payne University in American Southwest Conference play. The Tigers are now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the ASC. After both teams started off their drives by failing to score, Dru Smith was able to find Richard Johnson for 65 yards and the score. HPU started the second quarter with a ball but a fumble, recovered by Drew Brewster, and an interception by Caleb Taylor would turn the tides of the game. Ryan Travis would kick a 31-yard field goal to make it 10-0. On their next possession, ETBU struck again with Smith, who found Xavier Gray for 78 yards and a 16-0 lead. The Smith-to-Johnson connection worked again for 46 yards as the score was 22-0 at halftime. The third quarter saw three more scores as Smith ran from nine yards out. Then, linebacker Ty Parsons ran a pick-six back for a touchdown to give ETBU a 36-0 lead. For the third time in the game, Johnson caught a pass from Smith to make it 43-0 after three quarters. HPU would finally get in the end zone in the fourth quarter. ETBU would answer back with two rushing touchdowns by Brian Baca to finish out the scoring. Going 16-of-32 passing, Smith threw for 326 yards and four touchdown passes. Johnson was ETBU’s top receiver with 164 yards on seven catches with three touchdown recepitons while Gray had 111 yards on three receptions and one touchdown. Taylor and Parsons both had 16 and 11 tackles respectively as well as an interception. For HPU, Jaxson Durham threw for 17-of-35 with 147 yards. Hunter Batten ran 22 times for 73 yards and scored the only touchdown for HPU.
ETBU BULLET POINTS
4Tarek Beaugard (2nd) and Jacque Kuykendall (3rd) are in the top three in NCAA Division III for yards per reception. Beaugard is averaging 35.75 yards per catch and Kuykendall is at 35.25 yards per catch. 4Richard Johnson needs just one receiving touchdown to break the ETBU career record. He currenlty has 33 touchdowns and is tied with Tyler Bates. 4ETBU’s defense is 14th in NCAA Division III in fumble recoveries (7) and turnover margine (+1.50). 4Brian Baca is 10th in NCAA Division III in total offense at 332.8 yards per game. 4Aaron Buckley grabbed his first career interception vs. Hardin-Simmons in the endzone to stop a potential score last Saturday.

SENIOR RECEIVER LOOKS TO IMPROVE AT ETBU BY: NATHAN HAGUE
MARSHALL NEWS MESSENGER ETBU senior wide receiver Richard Johnson gets right to the point. If you ask him what his favorite route is, he’ll likely respond quickly by saying, “touchdowns.” If you ask him what his expectation is for the Tigers in 2018, he’ll likely say, “champions.” “Earn another championship ring and then meet up with my people down in Houston for a national championship, nothing less than that,” he added. Johnson’s fourth season at ETBU will be under his fourth head coach. “At this point, it’s not hard to adjust to different people’s system,” Johnson said. “The hardest part is trusting. You never know if the next head coach is actually going to leave or not but I feel like we have it right this time. It would be right for my senior year.” For each of his first three seasons, his Tigers have gone 7-3. “Everybody is sick of 7-3,” Johnson said. “Typically we get to the point in the season where maybe one or two guys started not caring and they either need to be snatched out of the role they’re in or they need to snap out of it and this year, nobody has that kind of mentality that they’re ready to give up on the season.” “We all know what we have. We’ve been championship-caliber talent since I’ve been here and definitely before that. So why would we allow 7-3 to happen again?’” “They just felt like 7-3 is mediocre,” ETBU’s first-year head football coach Brian Mayper said. “They don’t want to be that anymore. They want to be champions.” Mayper refers to Johnson as a hard-working leader.
Johnson hasn’t always been an All-American. Since his freshman year he has gotten bigger, stronger and stepped up his game significantly. “It’s a night and day difference, not even just my body but my game play,” Johnson said. “I came here, and you can ask any coach who was here or any player that’s a senior, my first five weeks I couldn’t catch a cold in an ice storm, honestly. Something just snapped in me.” He has since made his mark on the field on multiple occasions. In 2016, he caught 13 passes against Hardin-Simmons in a game where he also finished with 227 yards. In last season’s game against Hardin-Simmons, he had his career-long reception of 84 yards and he’s had two games where he caught three touchdown passes. As a receiver, he likes to study college and NFL receivers, with his favorite being Julio Jones. He has also taken note from his uncle, Joseph Randle, former Oklahoma State and Dallas Cowboy running back, after whom he chose No. 1 for his jersey number. “He’s young. He’s my uncle but we grew up like cousins,” Johnson said. “He would let me come stay with him on campus and he’d show me what the life was like and keep my head on straight and keep me wanting to work hard because I didn’t blossom until I got here,” Johnson added. “Seeing the success that’s in my blood kept me going.” He’s confident in ETBU’s offense, whether the Tigers run or pass. “Coach (Jason) Bachtel (offensive coordinator) likes to go deep and he wants us to run,” Johnson said. “We can go deep. We’ve been doing that. You’re either going to pick to stop the run and we’re going to go deep on you or you’re going to try to stop us from going deep and we’re going to run on you. If I was a defensive guy, I really don’t know what I would try to do. It’s pick your poison.” Perhaps Johnson is saving his best for last and when all said and done, he and his Tigers will have gotten over the hump and improved upon 7-3.
“You look at RJ, there’s a selfless guy, an All-American last year,” the head coach said. “He goes out there and works every day. He doesn’t complain about having the ball.”
