He also started the girl’s program in 2005 as they lost only one game in their first year claiming the TAPPs State Championship. He followed the 2005 season with a perfect season in 2006 winning a second straight state championship before moving to the college ranks at ETBU in 2007
Coaching Awards ASC Women’s Coach of the Year (2009) Paul Grant was named only the second head men’s soccer coach for East Texas Baptist University in December of 2013 and has been the head women’s coach since 2007. He now overlooks the men’s and women’s programs and in his first season of being the head coach both teams made the American Southwest Conference tournament. It was the first time, ever, in the history of the program that both teams qualified for the ASC Tournament together in the same year. When taking over the men’s program, he replaced Jose Alonso who retired after 19 years as the only men’s coach in ETBU history after serving as an assistant the last six seasons prior to taking over. In his first season as the head coach for the men’s team, ETBU advanced to their first American Southwest Conference tournament since 1999. His team also tied #12 Texas-Dallas, 1-1, in double overtime in regular season that helped to propel them to make the tournament. He also had six players named to the All-ASC team. This past season for the women’s team, he guided ETBU to their fourth American Southwest Conference tournament appearance in five years. He also had five players earn all-conference awards and 15 players on the ASC all-academic team. He has placed several of players on the All-ASC first team while Danica Saxon earned a regional honor. Grant’s players have excelled in the classroom as well last year placing 16 players on the Dean’s list and in 2013 having 15 players on the ASC’s all-academic team. Overall in seven seasons, 54 players have landed on the ASC’s all-academic team. After two years of being the head coach at ETBU (’07, ’08), Grant had rebuilt the program into a playoff contender again in the American Southwest Conference. In 2009, the Tigers returned to the postseason for the first time since 2006 and Grant was named the American Southwest Coach (ASC) of the Year in just his third season on the job. Grant led the team to its second ASC Tournament appearance under his direction in 2011, beginning the year with a record eight-game unbeaten streak. Before coming to ETBU, Grant was the boys coach at All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler, Texas, for eight years. In just three seasons at All Saints Episcopal he turned the soccer program into a state power house the TAPPS level. In his first season he lead the Trojans to their first ever playoff appearance and over the next eight season the Trojans qualified for the playoff every year while winning five district titles in a row. In his third season he led the Trojans to their first ever state final four appearance and went on to win back-to-back state championships in 02-03 and 03-04 while losing in
2
While coaching at All Saints Episcopal, he also assisted the Tyler Junior College men’s soccer program from 2004-2007 as the goal keeper coach spending four seasons with the nationally ranked Apaches. He had the opportunity to train several national youth team players from their respective countries while at TJC. Many of the players there went on to NCAA Division I schools after leaving and into the professional level. In 2005, Grant was named the Tyler Telegraph All-East Texas Coach of the Year as well as being named TAPPS Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year for two seasons. He was TAPPS Men’s Coach of the Year in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Grant has worked several camps over his coaching tenure and has been on the summer camp staff at Southern Methodist University since 1995. He has also worked as a soccer referee at the youth and college levels while earning Referee of the Year for region II and referee of the year for UIL in 1996. Grant currently holds a USSF “D” State Certication and a Goal Keeper Level II certification from the NSCAA. Grant earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Stephen F Austin State University. His wife Meredith is a Teacher and Softball Coach for Brownsboro ISD. YEAR IN REVIEW NOTES
Paul Grant Era Begins In December 2012, ETBU handed over the men’s program to Grant as the second head coach of the program. He took over for alltime wins leader Jose Alonzo who had started the program. Grant had been an assistant to Alonza the past six seasons and is no stranger to coaching both a men’s and women’s program together. He was the head boy’s and girl’s coach at All Saints Episcopal High School in Tyler, Texas, and won four TAPPS state championships – two with each program. In his first season as the men’s head coach, he guided the team to their first American Southwest Conference tournament appearance since 1999. He also coached them to a tie against #12 Texas-Dallas in the regular season. ASC Tournament Just squeaking into the American Southwest Conference Tournament, ETBU made only the program’s second tournament appearance in program history. It was the first time since 1999 that ETBU had been in the ASC Tournament. They made it in 2013 with a 3-5-2 conference record with wins over Howard Payne, Ozarks, and Concordia-Texas along with ties against Texas-Dallas and Mary Hardin-Baylor. In the tournament, ETBU had to face Louisiana College in which they fell 3-1 earlier in the year. They took the tournament match to the 109th minute in double overtime when Louisiana College won on a penalty kick. A late foul was called in the box with less than a minute to go and they converted on their chance for a 3-2 decision. Juan Ramirez and Justin Adams had the goals for ETBU in the second half. Adams goal came in the 82nd minute to tie the game up at two. All-ASC Awards Six players earned All-ASC Awards for ETBU. Pete Fitzsimmons and Juan Ramirez were the first team selections. Fitzsimmons tied for the team lead in goals this season with five, including a hat trick against Howard Payne in the second to last game of the season and tied for second on the team in assists with two. It was the second straight season on the first team for Fitzsimmons and his third all-ASC selection overall, as he was a third-team pick two years ago. Ramirez was selected to the first team for the third year in a row after finishing the season with two goals and two assists this season. He was also an honorable mention selection
as a freshman in 2010. Ramirez’s golden goal against Ozarks was a key in helping ETBU get to the playoffs as it gave them a crucial tiebreaker over Ozarks in seeding. Christian Garcia and Cody Hopson were both selected to the second team. Garcia tied with Fitzsimmons for the team lead in goals with five and also had an assist, as well as a hat trick, like Fitzsimmons, in the Howard Payne game late in the year. This was the second all-ASC selection for Garcia, as he appeared on the third team in 2011. Hopson is making his first appearance on an all-ASC team after he led the team in every major statistical category for goal keepers. He set career highs in saves with 66, GAA with 1.88 and was crucial in the tie against nationally ranked UT-Dallas, when he made a single game best 13 saves, including one in the 109th minute to preserve the tie and help ETBU’s playoff chances. Justin Adams was selected to the third team. Adams scored his first three career goals this season for ETBU after transferring from UT-Tyler last year. His goal against Louisiana College in the playoffs tied the game at two and gave ETBU the opportunity to win in OT. Gustavo Vazquez was named to the honorable mention team in his first year at ETBU. Vazquez finished the season with two goals and two assists, which tied him for second on the team. ASC Player of the Week Collecting seven points in a two match span over the weekend, East Texas Baptist University men’s soccer player Peter Fitzsimmons has been named the American Southwest Conference “Player of the Week.” ETBU went 1-1 on the weekend and kept their hopes alive for making the ASC Tournament. In a 7-1 win over Howard Payne on Thursday, Fitzgerald finished with a hat trick and an assist. He countered Christian Garcia’s efforts of a hat trick as they both combined to score six of the seven goals. On Garcia’s third goal, Fitzsimmons was credited with the assist for his seventh point. He netted goals in the 20th, 50th, and 59th minutes of the match. Against HardinSimmons, Fitzsimmons posted a shot on goal in the 1-0 loss. ASC All-Academic Team ETBU had four players make the all-academic team with a 3.0 grade point average or above.
4
To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must be classified academically as a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student during the competition season and have been in attendance and completed at least one academic year (two consecutive semesters) at their institution. They must also have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as certified at the conclusion of the academic semester in which the ASC sport championship is held. Tied Nationally Ranked #12 Texas-Dallas Taking on their toughest opponent in 2013, East Texas Baptist University battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie against #12 Texas-Dallas. Gustavo Vazquez netted ETBU’s first goal of the match just two minutes into the new game to make it 1-0. Off of a corner kick, Vazquez found the net to take the lead. The lead would last for the next 85 minutes until the 88th minute when Texas-Dallas snuck a goal past Cody Hopson. Omar Jaroun flicked in the tying goal just before regulation time ended to send the match to overtime. In overtime, ETBU had a penalty kick just two minutes in but Juan Ramirez missed the chance for the win. ETBU had three shots after that but could not find the net. In the second overtime, ETBU had no shots but held off a Texas-Dallas barrage of shots for the win.

All-ASC Awards With five players earning All-ASC awards, ETBU had one player earn the first team award. They also had two on the second team, one on the third team and one honorable mention along with a sportsmanship player of the year. Christina Robles was selected to first team after leading the team in goals with five and assists with four, setting career highs in both categories and leading the team in shots on goal as well. This was her first all-ASC selection at ETBU. Robles’ goal in the 81st minute of the playoff contest with UT-Tyler sent the game into OT. Kia Jelly and Kelsey Biscoe were named to the second team. Jelly was also a second team selection last year after leading the team in goals. She did not score a goal this year, but was a key contributor on defense, switching to that side of the field after a rash of injuries. Biscoe did not score a goal for ETBU this season, but did have three assists, and was also named to the second team for the second year in a row and was the ASC’s sportsmanship player of the year. Natalie Torres was selected to the third team. Torres tied for second on the team in goals with four, and made the third team after being an honorable mention selection last year. Torres scored a career-high two goals in a 6-0 win vs. LeTourneau.
Paola Bear was an honorable mention selection after being named to the conference’s allacademic team last year. Bear tied for second on the team in goals with four and also had two assists on the season. Regional Win In the final regular season game of the year, ETBU upset Texas-Tyler, 2-1 in overtime to secure their spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament and a winning record in conference. Paola Bear collected the golden goal in the 97th minute shocking the Patriots, who were regionally ranked. With the win, ETBU finishes the regular season at 5-4-1 in the ASC and 6-7-1 overall. Tied 1-1, Bear took a free kick from about 20-yards out and perfected the shot as it sailed by UT-Tyler goal Macy Hurley for the winning goal. It was Bear’s only shot on the night as she also assisted on the first goal of the night for ETBU. ETBU took the 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Bear found Natalie Torres for the opening goal. Torres found the corner part of the goal to put ETBU up 1-0. Just after halftime, UT-Tyler tied the match at one in the 48th minute on a Kathrynn Haag goal. Overall, ETBU took only 11 shots while UT-Tyler totaled 36 with 18 on goal. ETBU had only five shots on goal with two scoring. ETBU’s Christina Salas recorded a career high 17 saves in the win while UTT’s Hurley had three saves. ASC Tournament Playing their hearts out in two overtimes against Texas-Tyler, ETBU fell short of advancing in a 2-1 loss. Coming back to force double overtime they dropped a heartbreaker in the 103rd minute to finish the season at 6-8-1 overall and made their third straight ASC Tournament and fourth in the last five years. A Texas-Tyler player barely slipped by ETBU’s defense in the 103rd minute netting the golden goal. It was Texas-Tyler’s 27th shot on the day and 12th on goal. They took the lead, 1-0, early in the first half on a goal in the eighth minute. Over the next 72 minutes they held ETBU to no goals until Christina Robles broke loose. For the second match in a row vs. Texas-Tyler, ETBU nailed a free kick from 20-yards out as Robles found the back of the net to tie in the
6
80th minute. Texas-Tyler tried to score in regulation but Christina Salas stopped 10 shots on the day. In the first overtime, Texas-Tyler took four shots to ETBU’s one but it was the second overtime that the Patriots made the difference. On their second shot of the second overtime, Strother hit the game winner to end it. ETBU took 14 shots on the day with six on goal and had only one corner kick. Both teams committed 11 fouls.

ASC TOURNAMENT MEN’S SOCCER Paul Grant Era 2013
In his first year as the men’s soccer coach, Paul Grant guided ETBU to their first appearance in the ASC Tournament since 1999 as the #5 seed. The men’s team went to double OT where they lost on a penatly kick in the final seconds of the contest.
RECAP
Fighting literally to the end of double overtime in their first American Southwest Conference Tournament since 1999, ETBU had their hearts broken in the 109th minute on a penalty kick. Louisiana College secured the win when they netted the game winning shot on a penalty kick for the 3-2 double overtime victory. ETBU was the #5 seed in the ASC Tournament. In the 109th minute of double-overtime, a hand ball was called in the box on ETBU as Louisiana College was given a penalty kick. Fellipe Albuquerque hit the shot past Cody Hopson to end any chances of a shoot out. In the first half, Louisiana College struck first in the 26th minute on a Rodrigo Neves goal. That is all the scoring that took place in the first half. Juan Ramirez tied the match in the 67th minute when he darted in a free kick from the top of the box. Just eight minutes later Louisiana College retook the lead, 2-1, on a Greg McDoom shot off a Caio Sousa assist. It only took ETBU seven minutes to match the goal when Justin Adams connected on a penalty kick. Both teams battled in the first overtime as ETBU had two shots to Louisiana College’s one. In the second overtime, Louisiana College had three shots to ETBU’s one. Overall, ETBU took 24 shots to Louisiana College’s 20 and had 10 on goal. Louisiana College produced nine shots on goal. Cody Hopson finished with five saves whileTanner Duboc had seven for Louisiana College.
WOMEN’S SOCCER Paul Grant Era 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013
PaulGrant has led ETBU to four ASC Tournament appearances in seven years as the head coach. The ASC is one of the most elite NCAA Division III conferences in the nation and to qualify is an honor for the programs that play in the tournament. In 2013, ETBU (#5 seed) played to a double OT loss to UT-Tyler which has been their best effort in the tournament.
RECAP
Coming back to force double overtime against the University of Texas-Tyler, East Texas Baptist University dropped a heartbreaker in the 103rd minute, 2-1, as the 2013 season comes to a close. ETBU finishes the year at 6-8-1 overall and made their third straight ASC Tournament and fourth in the last five years. Texas-Tyler’s Chestly Strother barely slipped by ETBU’s defense in the 103rd minute netting the golden goal. It was Texas-Tyler’s 27th shot on the day and 12th on goal as they advanced to the next round. They took the lead, 1-0, early in the first half on a goal by Jordan Johnson in the eighth minute. Over the next 72 minutes they held ETBU to no goals until Christina Robles broke loose. For the second match in a row vs. Texas-Tyler, ETBU nailed a free kick from 20-yards out as Robles found the back of the net to tie in the 80th minute. Texas-Tyler tried to score in regulation but Christina Salas stopped 10 shots on the day. In the first overtime, Texas-Tyler took four shots to ETBU’s one but it was the second overtime that the Patriots finally found the back of the net to slip by ETBU. On their second shot of the second overtime, Strother hit the game winner to end it. ETBU took 14 shots on the day with six on goal and had only one corner kick. Both teams committed 11 fouls.
ZANE BARNES
Making the transition to collegiate coaching, Zane Barnes enters his first year on Paul Grant’s staff at East Texas Baptist University. The 2010 graduate from ETBU comes back to his alma mater bringing enthusiasm for a program he loves.
For the past three years, Barnes has been the assistant varsity boy’s soccer coach at Willis Independent High School. Willis has made three straight appearances in the Texas playoffs and it was the first time for the program to go in back-to-back years. He has also been the goal keeper coach for the team. “Barnes is a great addition to our staff at ETBU because he knows what our soccer program stands for,” says head men’s and women’s coach Paul Grant. “He loves this school and wants to come back and make a difference in the lives of ETBU soccer players before they move into the real world. I am blessed to have him my staff.”
Assistant Coach 1st Year
Barnes has a NSCAA goalkeeping of 1,2, and 3, a national ‘E’ license, in the progress of earning his ‘D’
license and is license.
A four-year starter for the ETBU men’s soccer team, he is second all-time in saves. He was a two-time All-American Southwest Conference selection named honorable mention as a sophomore and to the third team as a junior. His teammates named him the team MVP his in his senior season. Barnes graduated from ETBU in 2010 with an education degree in Mathematics and has been teaching since leaving Marshall, Texas.
