ETBU played their way to the top of the American Southwest Conference a conference and program best 32 matches. Making a run through the ASC Tournament, breaking three records and forcing the elimination match, Mashe put together one of her best seasons at ETBU. ETBU had two eight-match winning streaks and then went 5-2 in the ASC Tournament defeating every team that qualified including the eventual champion. This past season also brought the program’s first-ever AVCA All-American in sophomore Kolby Sharp. ETBU also led the ASC in all-conference selections with nine and for the second year in a row she produced the ASC’s “Freshman of the Year” in Mallory Sanders who was also ASC All-Tournament. Mashe has led ETBU to two ASC East Division championships and conference tournament appearances in seven of her eight seasons at her alma mater. In 2012 she fielded her youngest ETBU squad to date, depending heavily on true freshmen and sophomores, and managed to guide the team to another postseason appearance and second-place finish in the ASC East. She had seven players earn All-ASC awards including two first-team selections and the ASC East’s Freshman of the Year in Kolby Sharp. The Tigers have won 20 or more matches in a season in five of Mashe’s eight seasons at the helm. ETBU made its first ASC Tournament title game appearance in five years in 2008, and the program produced back-to-back ASC East Player of the Year honors in 2007 and 2008, with both awards being won by Katie Graves. Creating excitement among the team’s fans and ETBU community has also been a hallmark for Mashe’s teams, as the Tigers led the nation in NCAA Division III home attendance average during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. After eight seasons, Mashe has an overall record of 156-101 and became the all-time wins leader at ETBU in 2012.

Head Coach 8th Year

She has continued to build on the success of the program she helped generate as a player after she joined the program as a junior transfer for the 2003 season, playing her first two years of college eligibility at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. Mashe earned All-ASC recognition in both her seasons with ETBU in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, when ETBU won the last of three straight ASC titles, Mashe was all-conference as a libero/defensive specialist, and brought home All-ASC honors as the team’s setter in 2004. She still ranks third all-time at ETBU in career assists, with 1,524. Before joining ETBU, Mashe earned back-to-back all-conference recognition as Panola’s setter. Prior to that she was highly-touted as a high school standout at Pine Tree High School in Longview, Texas, where she earned All-State honors for the tradition-rich Lady Pirates. After graduating in May of 2005 with a B.S.E., Mashe took her first head coaching job at Atlanta (TX) High School, where she guided the Lady Rabbits to a 24-10 record and a playoff run that went two rounds deep in Class 3A. In her first season in 2006, Mashe guided ETBU to an ASC Eastern Division Championship. It was ETBU’s first division championship in any sport since 2004 and the volleyball program’s first division banner since 2002. She has quickly set about building a reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in the league. Lyndsay’s husband, Kris, works with her as the team’s assistant coach and they have one son, Brady. YEAR IN REVIEW NOTES 32 Program Wins – New Record

This season proved to be one of the best seasons, ever, in the history of the program as ETBU won a record 32 matches. They defeated Schreiner University, 3-0, on November 2nd for the 27th win to break the record. ETBU went on to win five more matches winning five of their next six matches for 32 wins. In 2013, they also recorded 17 sweeps in 32 wins. The old record of 26 was set in 2003, a team that head coach Lyndsay Mashe played on.

ASC Tournament

The 2013 American Southwest Conference tournament ended up being a very exciting one for ETBU. ETBU, who was the #3 seed overall, set three new ASC records in the tournament, defeated all five teams in the tournament, and played for the championship. ETBU is the first team to defeat the winner’s bracket team and force the elimination match playing three matches in one day. ETBU fell to HardinSimmons, 3-1, but had the Cowgirls on the edges of elimination in set four. ETBU was up 24-21 in set four but ran out of steam as Hardin-Simmons scored the next five points for the 26-24 match win. ETBU opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Concordia-Texas before falling to #2 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-1. On Friday, ETBU bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Texas-Tyler and then eliminated #1 seed and host Texas-Dallas, 3-1. Saturday brought three matches as ETBU took a 3-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor and then upset Hardin-Simmons, 3-1, before falling in the elimination match. Mallory Sanders and Kolby Sharp were named to the all-tournament team and ETBU broke tournament records for matches played (7), sets played (27), and wins (5). They also tied the ASC record for wins in a season at 32.

AVCA All-American

Kolby Sharp became program’s first-ever All-American when she was named to the AVCA honorable mention team. She received the award after being voted onto the AVCA All-Region first team as a sophomore. For the season, she finished fifth in hitting percentage in the NCAA and led the ASC. This was her seventh award this year as she started the being voted the ASC’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Her awards are below: AVCA All-American honorable mention ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year All-ASC First-Team ASC All-Tournament AVCA All-Region First-Team ASC Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 10, Sept. 17)

ASC Awards

Being one of the top ASC teams in 2013, ETBU had nine players awarded post-season awards. For the second year in a row, ETBU had the ASC Freshman of the Year in Mallory Sanders. Kolby Sharp and Adaeze Elonu were named to the first-team as it was the second year in a row for Sharp to be on the first-team. Sanders made the second-team after being named the freshman of the year and then Hannah Jones and Kayla Taylor were on the third team. Melanie Moyer, Nicole Buzzard, Kassie Freitag, and Madelynn Kinsel all were named honorable mention. It was the first award for freshmen Sanders, Buzzard, and Kinsel. Freshman of the Year: Mallory Sanders First-Team: Kolby Sharp, Adaeze Elonu Second-Team: Mallory Sanders Third-Team: Hannah Jones, Kayla Taylor Honorable Mention: Melanie Moyer, Nicole Buzzard, Kassie Freitag, Madelynn Kinsel All-Academic: Kassie Freitag, Hannah Jones, Melanie Moyer, Kolby Sharp, Kayla Taylor Players of the Week: Kolby Sharp (Sept. 10, Sept. 17), Hannah Jones (Oct. 8)

Single Season Record/Top 5

In just her second year on the team, junior Adaeze Elonu broke the single season record for blocks with 166. The old record of 135 was set in 1999 by Amy Carlson. Kolby Sharp also broke the record but came in second this year with 157 blocks behind Elonu. Freshman Mallory Sanders made the 50-ace club with 64 aces for third place. She just slipped past Allison Castillo’s 60 from 2001 and was 12 away from Arden Tunnell’s 76 from 2002. Hannah Jones finished the season with 635 digs to become a member of the 500 dig club. Her 635 digs is fifth best in a season and is just 115 less than the single season record of 750 set by Jill Boyd in 2007.

Career Top 10

Several players have moved up on the top 10 list this past season with blocks record in contention to be broken in 2014. Adaeze Elonu has 271 career blocks which is third all-time. The record is held by Casey Hugman (2001-04) with 365. Kolby Sharp is fifth all-time with 260 blocks and is contention of also breaking the record. When it comes to career kills, three players are currently in the top 10. Kassie Freitag, Ashley Lindsey, and Kolby Sharp. Kassie is eighth with 741 followed by Lindsey in ninth with 676 and Sharp in 10th at 657. The career record is 2,015 set by Arden Tunnell set from 2002-05.

Hannah Jones and Melanie Moyer are in the top 10 for digs. Jones has 1,067 digs for sixth place and has a chance to move up to second place in 2014 as Robin Cook has 1,524 digs. Moyer is in eighth place with 1,037. Two players have made their name in assists in Kayla Taylor and Nicole Buzzard. Taylor, who has played for three years as a setter, has 2,281 assists for third place. She will most likely finish third all-time as Allison Castillo has 4,356 assists in second place. Buzzard, a freshman, finished with 694 kills.

Winning Streaks

ETBU reeled off two eight-match winning streaks in 2013. After starting the season off 1-3, ETBU won eight straight going undefeated at the UT-Tyler Tournament (Sept. 6-7) and the Rhodes College Tournament (Sept. 13-14). Of those eight matches, four of them were swept, 3-0. The second eight-match winning streak came from September 24 through October 5th. It started with a 3-0 win over Centenary and then three more wins at the ASC Pod in Longview, Texas, over Mississippi College, LeTourneau University, and Texas-Tyler. They then traveled to Shreveport, La., for their second win over Centenary in a week followed by going undefeated in Ornelas Gym. Hosting the ASC Pod, ETBU swept Sul Ross State and Concordia-Texas and then gave Mary Hardin-Baylor their first ASC loss of the year, 3-2, to end the winning streak.
