Joseph, a part-time Health Care Assistant at The James Cook University Hospital, is proud to be studying an Adult Nursing degree at Teesside University after successfully completing the Pre-Access and the Access to Higher Education course at Stockton Riverside College. Joseph never considered himself to be academic, however he decided to return to education to progress in his health care career. He said: “I had been working in the operating theatres for over three years and I decided I wanted to go to university. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it! The course helped me realise that I’m capable of learning and it helped me massively in my university studies and at work. I particularly enjoyed the Human Biology module.” During his studies, Joseph was a key worker throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and was redeployed to the Intensive Care Unit. The 23-year-old from Middlesbrough said: “Studying whilst working during the pandemic has been hard, but it has made me stronger in practice and developed my skillset. My tutor, Marie, was so supportive and understanding throughout my studies. I had 1:1 online teams meetings to check my progress and see how I was doing. Her level of compassion is admirable!”

After an inspiring conversation with her midwife during her pregnancy, Anique knew that midwifery was the career for her! In 2019, she decided to pursue her ambition and study an Access to HE course at Stockton Riverside College. She said: “When my midwife told me about her career journey, I knew that midwifery was suited to me. The Access to HE course got me back into education and it was amazing to do something for myself.” The 28-year-old, who was born in Germany and now lives in Stockton with her husband and son, completed the course in summer 2020, impressively achieving all distinctions and securing a place on Teesside University’s midwifery degree for September 2021. “The course enhanced my academic studies and helped me to build my confidence. After achieving distinctions, I knew that I could do it! I’ve improved in my academic writing and referencing, and I’ve gained the skills needed for university. It was a great course.” Before starting her midwifery degree, Anique is studying the Cert HE in Social Care at Stockton Riverside College. She said: “I’ve particularly enjoyed my placement, as I’ve been helping and supporting women through their pregnancy and post-partum. It has been so valuable and a fantastic insight into my future career!

Working in health has always been a lifelong ambition for Lisa and in 2019, she was more determined than ever to follow her career aspirations by studying the Pre-Access and Access to Higher Education in Health course. “I’ve always wanted to work in health care, but because of my lack of education and experience I didn’t think it was possible. I was very wrong! My tutor, Marie, was great. She offered me 1:1 tutorials, boosted my confidence and her support really kept me going.” Whilst studying the course, Lisa left her job as a post office official to volunteer as a care assistant in a local care home to gain hands-on experience. She was soon offered a part-time role there, working throughout the pandemic. She said: “I’m proud to be a frontline worker. I enjoy assisting people with personal care needs, ensuring equality and diversity and putting my new skills into practice. It’s so rewarding!” The 41-year-old from Billingham is now studying an adult nursing degree at Teesside University and couldn’t be happier with her achievements so far. She said: “The Access to HE course has helped me at university already. I’ve seen a difference in how I complete my assignments and modules and I got 88% in my first biology module, because I had learnt about the human body, organisms and cells whilst at college.”

After 25 years in her job, Lynn discovered an interest in social care when she started volunteering with a friend, visiting elderly residents in the community. This sparked a change of career for Lynn and she enrolled onto the Access to Higher Education in Social Care Studies. Lynn admits that although the course was intense, she is so pleased that she chose it. The 44-year-old from Stockton said: “I had been out of education for a long time and I was anxious about starting the course, so I studied the Pre-Access first. I loved my time at the College – it was a massive confidence boost and totally reignited my passion for learning and writing! I never expected to achieve the grades I did.” Throughout the Access to HE course, Lynn, a mum of two, was juggling family commitments and working in a local convenience store as a duty manager, even during the pandemic. She said: “Studying whilst being a key worker was hard, but I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my tutor, Jade. She provided me with so much support and helped me mentally during lockdown. The course gave me something to focus on!” Interested in psychology, mental health and social work, Lynn is now studying a full-time Social Care degree at Teesside University and is looking forward to seeing where the course will take her.

Despite enjoying his role as a travelling sales representative for a number of years, Adam decided that he was ready for a change of career and in 2019, enrolled onto the Access to Higher Education in Social Care Studies course. The change from salesman to social worker may sound like a leap, but having previously volunteered in community support projects, Adam knew that this was the career for him. He said: “When I was volunteering, I would visit and help older people or offer social support. I have always enjoyed working with people and building relationships. I think it’s great that people are able to support others and offer the extra assistance that they need – that’s why I decided to pursue a career in social care.” At the age of 35 and with a young family, Adam is now studying a social work degree at Teesside University and looking to specialise as a children’s social worker. He said: “In my 20s I believed quite strongly that university wasn’t for me, but I’m pleased that I decided to return to education. The Access to HE course provided me with the skills that I needed for university. From understanding command verbs to structuring an essay, assignment or report – my writing skills have improved massively.”
