Policies and procedures
Smoking
Redcar and Cleveland College is a non-smoking college, you must not smoke anywhere on the college grounds unless within the permitted smoking area, located in between the car park and reception. This also extends to the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping.
Fire Alarm
In the event of the fire alarm being sounded, please leave the college by your nearest emergency exit. The assembly point is in the main car park in front of the building. Your tutor will then take a register to ensure that all students are present.
ID Badges
You will be provided with a temporary ID badge as soon as you sign in at the college reception. You must wear your ID badge whilst on the college premises at all times. While using this temporary badge, you must sign out every day and hand the badge in. Once you are enrolled, you will be provided with a photo ID badge. This badge does not need to be handed in. However, it must be worn every day. This is part of the safeguarding procedure to keep all students and staff safe.
Complaints Procedure
Stage 1: If you have any concerns, talk to your tutor in the first instance. If you remain unhappy, please go to reception and ask for a manager. Reception will call the appropriate person to talk to you (e.g. the Head of Department responsible for your course).
Stage 2: If you still have concerns after talking to a manager, you can complete a complaint form (available from reception) or you can email the Quality and Enhanced Learning Leader Stephen Cross at stephen. cross@the-etc.ac.uk with details or telephone 01642 865482 .
Data Protection/ Information Sharing
The college needs to process (that is collect, use, store and ultimately destroy) personal information about you as a student and your progress throughout your course in order to process your achievements, therefore we endeavour to protect all sensitive information and work completed by our students.
Bullying and Harassment Procedure—Code of Conduct
The aim of the college is to maintain consistently good standards of conduct across the college, therefore we expect good behaviour and ground rules to be adhered to.
Equal Opportunities
All forms of prejudice and discrimination are unacceptable, and the college will seek to challenge inequality, prejudice and discrimination. The college embraces diversity in all its aspects, and aims to treat all learners with respect and dignity in order to provide an environment free from harassment, discrimination and victimisation. The college will not tolerate any form of discriminatory behaviour based on age, disability, freedom of speech, gender, transgender/gender identity, race, religion and belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is about protecting the health, well-being and human rights of us all, but especially children, young people and vulnerable adults — to live free from abuse, harm and neglect.
If you feel you are at risk of harm and/or abuse or you don’t feel safe (either at college or at home) please contact the Safeguarding Team who are here to support and help protect you. British Values and Prevent
British Values
As a college it is important that we promote Fundamental British Values which include the following:
• Democracy - Your vote and voice counts, you can make a difference
• Rule of Law - The law applies to everyone
• Individual Liberty - You are entitled to your view and to your freedom of expression and thought
• Mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs
Prevent
Prevent is the government's strategy to stop vulnerable people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It works by using early intervention to encourage individuals and communities to challenge extremist and terrorist behaviour and ideology. The college provides a safe space for you to debate controversial issues, as well as build resilience and critical thinking skills that you will need to challenge extremist arguments.
Radicalisation: “the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and forms of extremism.”
Extremism: “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs."
Ask to see a member of the safeguarding team urgently if you have any concerns about potential radicalisation or terrorism.
Online safety
Think before you post. Don’t upload or share anything you wouldn’t want your future employers seeing. Try to put your point across in a positive or neutral way.
Don’t share personal details.
Watch out for phishing and scams.
Phishing is when someone tries to trick you into giving them information, like your password. Never click links from emails or messages that ask you to log in or share your details.
Think about who you’re talking to.
Keep your device secure and up to date.
Use strong passwords and never give out your password.
Cover your webcam. Some viruses will let someone access your webcam without you knowing, so make sure you cover your webcam
whenever you’re not using it.
Make sure you log out when you’re using public or shared devices.
Be careful which websites you’re using.
Make sure any website you’re using has “https” at the start of the address so that you know it’s secure.
Be respectful.
Respect your friends on social media.
It's not always real life.
Images of other people’s (carefully chosen) perfect lives can leave you feeling low, but they rarely tell the whole story.
Keep a healthy balance.
If you find yourself spending a lot of time online, or thinking about it when you could be doing fun 'real world' things, maybe it’s time to back off a bit. There’s a whole world out there.
