WELCOME Hello, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for taking an interest in our Foundation Learning programme. Foundation Learning provides young people who are working at a range of levels with both the skills to cope with life independently and the potential to progress towards further opportunities in learning or employment.
Taught by skilled and caring staff, our students grow in confidence and understanding. They will benefit from work experience and enrichment activities, as well as advice on their next steps. I am available to discuss any questions you have about our Foundation Learning programme.

SUPPORTING YOU BEFORE YOU JOIN… One-to-one college visits We can arrange one-to-one college visits for you and your parents/guardians with our Foundation Learning team. These visits can provide you with a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with our College and meet our friendly team of tutors and support staff.
Taster sessions We run a wide range of Foundation Learning taster sessions throughout the year so you can learn more about our courses.
School visits Our Foundation Learning team regularly visit local schools to meet with potential students, deliver interactive workshops and presentations. This is a
brilliant time to ask any questions you may have about applying for a place on our Foundation Learning programme.

Meeting your tutor After you have applied for a place you will be invited to come along for an informal chat with your course tutor so we can get to know you and develop your transition plan to help you feel at ease in your new environment.

What kind of support packages can we offer?
Please let us know about your needs on your application form. We will then arrange a support interview and ensure that appropriate provision is in place for when you join the College. We will discuss your individual needs, which will help us to identify an appropriate support package for you.

Every day is different and each situation can be a challenge. Our goal is to ensure our students are respected, cared for as individuals and are encouraged to reach their full potential.

Specialist facilities and equipment We have a range of specialist equipment available for learners including specialist software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking and Read and Write Gold. Students can also be provided with dictaphones, magnifiers as well as specialist keyboards and laptops. We have dedicated foundation learning classrooms which have specialist facilities to help you develop independent living skills. Our Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) Room provides learners with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND), support to ensure they have equal life chances as they move into adulthood. The room is sectioned into small booths, each focused on one of the 4 key pathways: independent living, employment, good health, and community inclusion. Each booth contains key information from specialist agencies to ensure learners have all they need to develop their skills and prepare for their next steps.
Transition into college life We can arrange taster sessions so you can experience a course session of your choice and decide if it is right for you. We can also provide support during your college interview. Transition sessions can be arranged to meet course tutors, learning support staff and allow you to familiarise yourself with the building.
FOUNDATION LEARNING WHAT WILL YOU DO? Our Foundation Learning courses offer you an opportunity to help you identify your personal goals, improve your employability skills and develop your maths and English. Working in small groups and on supported trips you will take part in practical activities to help you achieve your own targets and put the skills you have learnt into practice. Your work will be recorded in workbooks and you will be able to get involved with enterprise activities and complete a work or vocational placement.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU? If you want to explore and develop your personal and vocational skills, improve your life skills, achieve living that is more independent or enter the work place, then come and see how we can help.
WHERE WILL I BE STUDYING? You will be studying at Redcar & Cleveland College in our dedicated Foundation Learning classrooms. We have specialist facilities within the College to provide support where required including lift access, personal care rooms and accessible toilets. We also have a dedicated quiet area that is available at all times.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS? We focus heavily on supporting our students in developing the skills they require for their next steps on completion of the programme. Depending on your goals you can progress on to a level 1 course in your chosen vocational area, move into adult social care or supported internships.

OUR PROGRAMMES
ENTRY LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN USING EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS Course length: 1 year
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Our Using Employability Skills course will help you develop key independence and employability skills for the future. You will study a range of units including working with others, using communication skills in a work place, travel and cooking skills and self-care. You will also have the opportunity to gain experiences of vocational courses.
WHAT GRADES DO I NEED? No formal entry requirements.
WHAT’S NEXT?
On completion of this course you could progress on to our Entry Level 3 Certificate in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development or you may achieve a greater level of independent living or move on to supported employment or voluntary work.
LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE IN SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT, TRAINING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Course length: 1 year
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Our level 1 course will help to prepare you for your next steps. You will be able to develop key skills such as teamwork, time management and interpersonal skills. You will also study topics such as basic food preparation, personal development, skills for independent life and English and maths as well as taking part in enrichment and tutorial sessions.
WHAT GRADES DO I NEED? No formal entry requirements.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Once you have completed this course you could progress on to a full-time vocational course or you may achieve a greater level of independent living or move on to supported employment, supported internships or voluntary work.
ENTRY LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE IN SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT, TRAINING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Course length: 1 year
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This fun and interactive course is designed to help you build skills, knowledge and self-esteem. You will study units such as independent living, skills for shopping, customer service, basic cooking, healthy living and budgeting. Learning will take place within our specialist foundation learning classrooms.
WHAT GRADES DO I NEED? No formal entry requirements.
WHAT’S NEXT?
On completion of this course you could progress on to a level 1 vocational course of your choice, or you may achieve a greater level of independent living or move on to supported employment or voluntary work.
ENGLISH AND MATHS
Our Foundation Learning programme runs alongside English and maths to support you to develop your skills. Our dedicated team of tutors will work with you to help you achieve your targets. You will be able to study English and maths at GCSE or Functional Skills level whilst studying on the Foundation Learning programme. You will work closely with your tutor to strengthen your skills and prepare you for your next steps. Progression is available from entry level 1 through to level 2 in Functional Skills or you can study GCSE English and maths.
ENRICHMENT
Work Experience
Enrichment Our Foundation Learning programme works closely with the College’s enrichment programme to bring you the best experience whilst you are at college. There is so much for you to get involved with including sport sessions, charity fundraisers, life skills workshops, enterprise, guest speakers, trips and visits.
We ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to gain work experience during the Foundation Learning programme. Opportunities for work experience could be internally within the College, within local organisations or on a voluntary basis. We work closely with a range of local organisations who offer our Foundation Learning students tailored work experience sessions. Your course tutor and our dedicated work experience team will support you during these sessions to ensure you receive the best possible experience.
