WELCOME

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses, all Access to HE courses can be completed in one year. All courses are part time and students can complete the course in one year, but this does not mean that you will be in college all day throughout the week.

PRE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Have you struggled with the initial maths and English screening tests for your Access choice? Pre Access is an excellent stepping stone for those wanting to enter the Access to Higher Education route into university!

Learning Support Our Learning Support Team are dedicated to making sure our learners receive the support they need. We can arrange a support interview and make sure the appropriate support is put in place. Our aim is to make sure our learners are respected and cared for as individuals and are encouraged and supported to reach their potential at all times. Learning support services include support for students who are visually impaired, have a hearing impairment, those with mobility issues, dyslexia, autism or any learning or physical difficulty and/or disability. 04

Having been out of education for 15 years, it was a challenge for me but the pre access course was amazing, we looked at grammar, language and communication, to make sure we could go on to meet the requirements of the health access course. It changes your approach to study.

PRE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION SCIENCE On this course you will develop scientific knowledge and skills as well as improving your maths and English to the level 2 requirement. Pre Access is an excellent stepping stone for those wanting to enter the Access to Higher Education route into university!

A genealogist studies families, family history, and the tracing of lineages. Genealogists use oral interviews, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family. The results are often displayed in charts or written as narratives. Genealogy research can be performed for scholarly or forensic purposes.

A play therapist is a person who works with children aged 3 to 11, using play as a communication tool to understand their world and to help them deal with emotional distress and trauma. You will help children and their families work through difficult life issues and experiences.

An arbitrator is someone who works in alternative dispute resolution (or ADR). Arbitration is one of the ways legal disputes are resolved outside the courts and across international boundaries. The mum-of-two secured a place to study Diagnostic Radiography at Teesside University. “It was hard work but I enjoyed it,” said the 36-year-old from Stockton. “I didn’t build my hopes up about getting into university, so I was screaming when I got my place.” 20

She said: “I have a house and a family so I needed to be out of a paid job for as little time as possible. The Access course was better for me as it was something I could do while still working full-time.” She admits it has been hard work and taken commitment, but it was well worth it with two offers for Durham University and The University of Sunderland.

Starting out on an Access to HE Health course at Stockton Riverside College and then moving on to a Level 4 qualification at the college, gave the 32-year-old from Middlesbrough, the skills and knowledge she needed to pursue her ambition. “The best bit for me has been the support you get from the tutors,” she said. “They both push and support you until you achieve.”

The government recently announced that additional funding support will be made available to all new and current preregistration students on nursing, midwifery and some allied health professional courses from September 2020. This means all eligible students will receive at least £5,000. Some will receive additional payments of up to £3,000. This covers students in regions or specialisms struggling to recruit and those who need help to cover childcare costs. The grant, which will not need to be repaid, comes as part of the government's manifesto commitment to increase nurse numbers up to 50,000 by 2025. It is expected to benefit more than 35,000 students every year. Students will still access funding from SLC for tuition and maintenance loans, and the NHSBSA to apply for the existing Learning Support Fund. ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS Depending on your circumstances we may be able to offer your course at a discounted fee or in some cases free, or you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan (see below for details). ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS

If you are planning to study a level 3-6 further education course or Access to Higher Education programme you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. Students can apply for a loan to meet the upfront costs of their qualification, which will be paid directly to the College on their behalf. This is a great way to access courses, which previously may have been out of reach for financial reasons. Things you need to know: • You need to be a UK resident and aged over 19 • Advanced Learner Loans are not means tested or credit checked • Funds are paid directly to the learning provider • Minimum amount £300 (maximum depends upon the course chosen) • You must enrol on an eligible course • Bursaries may be available for extra support for childcare* • Applications for courses starting in September can be made online with the Students Loans Company from April • Repayments only start when earning an annual salary of £25k or more. This loan application is a credit agreement between you and the Student Loans Company If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to complete a higher education course, you won’t have to pay back your Advanced Learner Loan.
