This guide offers an overview of the higher education courses available at Bede Sixth Form College, Redcar and Cleveland College and Stockton Riverside College.

About us

We pride ourselves on offering a learning environment that educates, motivates and inspires our students. From our colleges in Stockton, Redcar and Billingham, we deliver a variety of honours degrees, foundation degrees, HNCs, degree level equivalent and professional courses, with full and part-time options available.

Classes are made up of adults of all ages, including those straight out of college as well as mature students. If you have been out of the classroom for a while or don’t have the traditional entry qualifications, we can offer support and guidance to ease your return to education.

Our access to higher education courses are a great way to prepare you for the demands of university study. Taking pride in our surrounding communities, we work closely with employers and organisations from the private, public and third sectors. This ensures the knowledge and skills we teach are up to date, relevant and meet the needs of our students, employers and the wider economic demands of the region.

From theatre and gallery visits to city breaks and maybe even the odd long-haul flight, we want you to make the most of your time with us. In previous years our Aviation and Tourism students have visited Hong Kong, New York and Dubai.

We are part of the Teesside University College Partnership (TUCP) which means that many of our higher education courses are delivered in partnership with the University.

Students on these courses can access services and facilities both at the College and the main Teesside University campus. These

include information and advice, the careers service, library services, the Student Life building, Teesside University Students’ Union and disability services.

We want all of our students to get the very best from their time with us, so whether you choose a course at Bede Sixth Form College, Redcar and Cleveland College or Stockton Riverside College, you will find some of the best facilities, welcoming learning spaces and all of the support you could possibly need. This includes:

Higher education centres

Our dedicated Higher Education Centres at Stockton Riverside College and Redcar and Cleveland College offer space for higher education students to study independently, in groups or network with other students. With comfortable seating areas and dedicated IT facilities, we have quiet study zones as well as space for group study.

Learning resource centres

All of our higher education students can access our Learning Resource Centres at Stockton Riverside College, Redcar and Cleveland College and Bede Sixth Form College. Each has an extensive range of learning materials to support your studies, along with a variety of ICT facilities. Our LRC teams are also on hand to offer support.

VLE

All of our students have access to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you can communicate with your tutor and access programme materials. The VLE can be accessed remotely, making it easier to continue your studies at home.

Leisure facilities

As a student you will have access to our leisure facilities across all of our sites, this includes refectories, a restaurant, hair and beauty salons and access to our sport and gym facilities.

Bede Sports Centre

We have our own dedicated sports centre at Bede Sixth Form College in Billingham. This includes a FIFA 1 standard, FA registered, flood-lit Astro pitch, a 10-metre-high climbing wall with cave features, a fitness suite with a full range of gym equipment and a four-court sports hall.

Technology

Our sites have some of the most advanced technology to help meet the demands of your course. This includes enhanced ICT facilities and industry-standard equipment relevant to your field of study.

Engineering

We want to ensure we are equipping our students with the skills employers need, that’s why we have invested in brand new state of the art engineering facilities at Redcar and Cleveland College including...

• A purpose-built Programmable Logic Control (PLC) Room, including the latest software and hardware, enabling students to have real hands-on experience in PLC programming, developing and learning problem solving techniques.

• A Hydraulics and Pneumatics Training Room, complete with design software and a range of training stations. This enables students to design, build and test pneumatics and hydraulic circuits, linking theory to practice.

• We have enhanced our Automation and Process Control Area which now includes the Mitsubishi robotics, SCADA system and a dedicated manufacturing processing system.

• Our CAD Room has also been updated with new PCs, the latest software and widescreens for enhanced display of CAD drawings.

3G football pitch

Our brand new, all-weather 3G football pitch at Redcar and Cleveland College was launched in July 2021 and is the ideal training facility for college students and the wider community!

Clean Energy Education Hub

Our brand new Clean Energy Education Hub at Redcar and Cleveland College will give you the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in the clean and renewable energy sector. The hub will help give you access to the facilities, knowledge and top class teaching you need to develop a career in a range of industries that will lead the energy transition.

Whether you are continuing in your studies, returning to education after many years out of the classroom or looking to retrain or upskill, we can help you to reach your personal goals.

Noureen Health and Social Care

Access to HE

Access to Higher Education courses are ideal for those who have been out of education for several years or without the traditional qualifications for entry into university. The Access to HE courses develop your knowledge and study skills ready for higher education.

Foundation degrees

Foundation degrees (FdA or FdSc) are heavily employment based and normally take two or three years of study. These courses offer opportunities for students from a range of backgrounds, including those with previous experience rather than conventional entry requirements.

HNCS

Higher National Certificates (level 4) are designed to provide skills/career based qualifications. They also enable students to progress to honours degree programmes.

Degree and degree top-up programmes

On completion of our foundation degrees, you can progress on to the final top-up award, which is a one year programme that takes your qualification up to a full degree programme.

Teaching qualifications

We offer a variety of routes into teaching in the post-16 sector. Practical placement experience is an essential component of this programme. We offer parttime routes, on an in-service basis.

Professional programmes

We offer a variety of professional courses awarded by professional bodies. These are excellent preparation for upskilling in careers such as accounting, business, financial services and human resource management.

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the central organisation that processes student applications for full-time higher education courses. UCAS uses a tariff system, known as UCAS points, which converts a wide range of qualifications into points.

This means you can use a variety of qualifications to help secure your place on an undergraduate course. Use this guide to work out how many tariff points you have and whether you meet our entry requirements.

Emma Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health

Access to Counselling

Course Type: Access to Higher Education Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements:

> Students will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous

> All applicants will participate in an information session

> Following this, applicants will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered

Location:

The Access to Higher Education in Counselling Diploma, is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need or you may not have been in education for several years, then an Access to HE course could be the course for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses. Courses are part-time and students complete the course in one year.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The Diploma is made up of a series of units which are individually graded. Subjects will include Word Processing for Access, Study Skills, Communication Skills, Psychology, Counselling Theory, Professional skills and Fundamental Skills of Counselling and Personal Development within Counselling.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

The production of an electronic portfolio of evidence is crucial. Assessment involves the writing of essays, reports, presentations, research and health promotion activities.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on an FdA in Counselling.

Access to Health

Course Type: Access to Higher Education

Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements:

> Students will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous

> All applicants will participate in an information session

> Following this, applicants will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered

Location:

The Access to Higher Education in Health Diploma is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upperage limit for Access to HE courses.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of level 2 and level 3 units which are individually graded. Subjects will include Level 2 English Skills for Higher Education and Maths. The graded level 3 units include Health Promotion, Human Biology, Professional Skills in Healthcare, Contemporary Care Practice, Human Biology: Health and Illness and a Health and Care Research Project.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

Assessments involve the writing of academic essays, reports, electronic presentations using Stream and research relating to aspects of health and health promotion. All assessments will be required as evidence as you will produce an electronic portfolio of evidence.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma students can apply to university for a place on a range of health-related degrees or other higher education degree programmes. These include nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, dental nursing, physiotherapy and our Level 4 CERT HE in Health and Social Care.

Access to Humanities and Social Sciences

Course Type: Access to Higher Education Diploma

Length: 1 year, part-time

Entry Requirements:

> Students will be considered on their individual merits although recent relevant learning at level 2 is advantageous

> All applicants will participate in an information session

> Following this, applicants will be asked to complete a literacy and numeracy test to determine if a place can be offered

Location:

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. If you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then an Access to HE course could be for you. There is no upper-age limit for Access to HE courses, and these can be completed in one year, on a part-time basis.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The diploma is made up of a series of level 2 and level 3 units which are individually graded. Subjects will include Level 2 English Skills for Higher Education and Level 2 Maths. The graded level 3 units include Psychology, History, Contemporary Care Practice, English Studies and a Humanities and Social Science Research Project.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

Assessments involve the writing of academic essays, reports, electronic presentations using Stream and research required for assignments. All assessments will be required as evidence as you will produce an electronic portfolio of evidence.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On successful completion of the access diploma learners can apply to university for a place on a range of degrees or other higher education degree programmes. These include psychology, criminology, sociology, law, English, education and history.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Access to Social Care

Length: 1 year, part-time

Aviation and Tourism

Course Type: FdA

Length: 2 years, full-time

Entry Requirements:

> 40-48 tariff points

> Level 2 English and maths

> CVs/references/CPD Records/APL/ AEPL will be assessed for non-traditional applicants who may have subject specific or related qualifications (that may not carry points on the UCAS tariff)

Location:

Aviation and tourism are fast moving, dynamic and forward-thinking industries...and so are we. The philosophy of the course is to produce graduates who have developed a globally comprehensive knowledge of the aviation and tourism sectors with a robust interpretation of the concepts surrounding business resilience and sustainability. Developing underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for success/ enhancement in employment, future study or career flexibility and advancement are also features of the course.

Students have the opportunity to develop academic skills as well as industry skills that are reflective of current best practice with industry engagement opportunities being as diverse as the students who enrol on the course.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Level 4 modules include Structure and Regulation of the Aviation Industry, Marketing Principles and Practice in Aviation and Tourism, Introduction to Study and Transferable Skills, Exploring Health, Safety and Security in Aviation, Innovation and Technology in Aviation and Tourism and Understanding Sector Customer Service Provision.

Level 5 modules include Performance Management and Leadership in Aviation and Tourism, Exploring Tourism Destination Development, Business Economics and Financial Insight, Professional Development and Employability Planning, Understanding Research in Aviation or Tourism and Contemporary Issues in Aviation.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

Assessments include self-analysis reports, presentations, reflective journals, essays, timed assessments and planning documents.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Most recently graduates have secured employment both locally and nationally with leading sector organisations. Roles in aviation and tourism range from airport marketing, aviation security, air crew, executive travel and aviation training management.

You may also wish to further your studies and progress onto a top-up award or other appropriate top-up programmes with a further year of study.

Course Type: FdA

Length: 2 years, full-time or 3 years, part-time

Entry Requirements:

> QCF Level 3 achievement (or equivalent) in counselling

> GCSE (or standard equivalent) in English grade 4/C or above

> Satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS check). You will be asked to declare any criminal convictions and be aware that enhanced checks for regulated activity will be carried out prior to you undertaking clinical practice

> Written references from two sources to demonstrate appropriateness to undertake professional counselling training

> A commitment to 10 hours of personal therapy each year

> A voluntary placement consisting of 100 face to face clinical hours

> Successful interview

Location:

The objective of the study programme is to produce graduates who possess a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of counselling as well as a range of practical and professional and key transferable skills required for graduate employability and lifelong learning.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Level 4 modules include Person-Centred Theory and Practice, Developing Skills for Professional Practice, Foundations of Personal and Professional Practice, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Counselling Skills Practice and Personal & Professional Development.

Level 5 modules include Advanced Counselling Skills, Professional Development in Practice, Psychodynamic Approaches, Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing, Professional Development in Practice, Understanding Research in Counselling and Counselling Approaches and Practice; Working from an Integrative Perspective.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

A variety of assessment methods are used to demonstrate learning such as referenced essays, individual and small group presentations, case reports, reflective commentaries and observer feedback.

WHAT’S NEXT?

You can progress onto the BA (Hons)

Therapeutic Counselling, BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling or the CPCAB

Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory.

EARLY YEARS

Early Years courses are in partnership with Teesside University

Early Years

Course Type: FdA

Length: 2 years, part-time

Entry Requirements:

> In order to access the programme individuals must be working (paid or voluntary for 150 hours per year) in an appropriate setting (for example a school, nursery, children’s centre, within special education needs) and have professional access to children under the age of eight for the duration of their studies

> Be 18 years or over by 31 December in their first year of study

> Have a level 3 qualification in a relevant area

> Have experience working in early years

> Undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check

Location:

This part-time programme is a foundation degree for early years’ practitioners working with children under the age of 8. You will be at least 18 and have experience of working with

children in a variety of contexts and hold a level 3 childcare qualification (or equivalent).

The foundation degree has been endorsed by SEFDEY.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Level 4 modules include Understanding Children’s Development, Approaches to Pedagogy, Early Years Policy and Practice and Professional Portfolio.

Level 5 modules include Research for Early Years, Learning and Best Practice in Early Years, Protecting Children in the Early Years and Professional Portfolio.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

A variety of methods are used to demonstrate learning such as referenced essays, individual and small group presentations, case reports, reflective commentaries, and observer feedback.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Successful completion of this programme enables you to progress onto the final year of the BA (Hons) Education and Training or a relevant top-up degree.

Course Type: BA (Hons)

Length: 2 years, part-time

Entry Requirements:

> For direct entry into the level 6 modules, entrants will be expected to have attained a foundation degree or equivalent credits (120 at level 4 and 120 at level 5) in a relevant and appropriate educational area. These entrants will follow a one-year programme

> Applicants who do not already have the level 5 credits but do have an appropriate teaching qualification at level 4 (worth 120 HE credits) such as a Certificate in Education: Education and Training or relevant equivalent, will enter at level 5 and follow a two-year programme. RPL and APEL will be considered via individual application

You are assessed by one written assignment. The assignment requires you to undertake a medication risk assessment within your area of practice, identifying potential hazards at stages of the medication process. This is followed by recognition of the importance of robust policy and implementation of the policy with links to legislation and guidance.

The FdA in Law and Practice is designed to provide learners with a solid foundation in law and legal services within the English Legal System. Graduates will develop skills which are necessary to deal with current legal issues in a practical way across a wide variety of legal areas including, but not limited to, criminal law and litigation, contract, tort and civil litigation and land law and conveyancing. The course has been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing potential graduates to continue with their study programme by topping up to complete the full LLB Hons. There will also be opportunities for learners to become members of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and complete a professional paralegal qualification alongside their degree, increasing the employability skills of our graduates.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The FdA in Law and Practice will consist of a variety of modules including legal foundations, tort law, criminal law, land law and more. Learners will also embark on practical modules such as criminal litigation, civil litigation and conveyancing where they will apply the relevant areas of law in a practical manner. Learners will also complete modules relating to practical legal skills, such as client care, legal research, mooting and debating. In your second year, learners will be able to choose optional modules which include wills and probate and family law and practice.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will be assessed by a mixture of external examinations and written coursework. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates will be able to top up at Teesside University to complete their LLB (Hons) in Law in order to achieve their qualifying law degree.

CILEX Certificate in Legal Practice

Course Type: Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX)

The CILEX Certificate in Legal Practice is an introductory legal qualification which allows you to explore the practical aspects of working in law. The course is ideal for those who are not currently in legal work but wish to explore that career option. The course is also perfect for those working in a junior position, e.g. legal assistant, wanting to increase their legal knowledge or begin their development to become a paralegal. The course also allows employers to upskill their workforce within specialist areas and departments.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Trainees will start by completing two mandatory modules: Legal Systems, which covers the foundations of law and legal practice, and Professional and Legal Skills, which focuses on how to succeed working within a legal environment and how to conduct legal research. The third module will link to a relevant pathway, or specialism. The modules available include property and conveyancing, working in civil litigation, working in criminal law, working in family practice and working in probate practice.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will be assessed by a mixture of internal formative assessments and external examinations throughout the duration of your training programme.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates will receive a certificate in legal practice based on your chosen specialism, e.g. Certificate in Civil Litigation. The certificate allows you to progress onto the CPQ Foundation course to train to become a CILEX Paralegal and can even provide exemptions towards this qualification allowing you to qualify quicker. CILEX Professional Qualification Foundation Stage

Course Type: Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX)

Length: 18 months, part-time evening classes

Entry Requirements:

GCSE or equivalent is desired. By the end of this course, you will need to have secured relevant work experience.

Location:

The Foundation Stage of the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) is the first stage of professional training to becoming a CILEX Paralegal, CILEX Advanced Paralegal or CILEX Lawyer. The Foundation Stage of the CPQ is broken down into three elements: core legal knowledge, practice and skills; ethics and professional responsibility; and professional experience.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

As part of your academic study, you will need to complete five mandatory modules which include Legal Systems, Contract Law, Law of Tort, Introduction to Property and Private Client and Professional and Legal Skills.

In addition, you will be required to evidence your competence via a professional experience portfolio, carried out with a legal employer, and complete the first ethics and professional responsibility e-learning module. Please note, there is no requirement for you to be working in the legal sector when first embarking on the CPQ Foundation Stage. However, in order to complete the full qualification, you will need to have secured some work experience which covers the requirements of the professional experience element of the programme.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will have to sit one exam assessment for each of the modules studied, with the exception of Professional and Legal Skills which consists of two different assessments. Your e-learning module will be assessed online via the CILEX Portal. For the Professional Experience, you will be expected to demonstrate that you are competent against the criteria of the competency framework relevant to your job role and CPQ stage. This will be done via an online portfolio and your experience will need to be validated by your employer.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates of the Foundation Stage will be able to hold the professional status of CILEX Paralegal. CILEX Paralegals can then progress onto the CILEX Professional Qualification –Advanced Stage to complete further training and begin specialising in a chosen legal area. The Advanced Stage of the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) is the second stage of professional training to becoming a CILEX Advanced Paralegal or CILEX Lawyer. Those of you who have a qualifying law degree will be able to start your CILEX training on the CPQ Advanced Stage. Successful completion of the CPQ Advanced Stage will qualify you as a CILEX Advanced Paralegal. Following on from this you will be able to progress onto the CPQ Professional Stage to become a CILEX Lawyer.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

As part of your academic study you will need to complete four mandatory modules: Professional and Legal Skills Dispute Resolution, Litigation Criminal Law, Litigation Property and Conveyancing.

In addition, you will be required to select at least one optional module from either Business and Employment Law, Family Law and Practice or Wills, Probate and Private Client.

You will be required to evidence your competence via a professional experience portfolio, carried out with a legal employer, and complete the second ethics and professional responsibility e-learning module. If you have not completed the Foundation Stage of CPQ you will also be required to complete the first ethics and responsibilities module in order to progress.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will have to sit one exam assessment for each of the modules studied, with the exception of Professional and Legal Skills which consists of two different assessments. Your e-learning module will be assessed online via the CILEX Portal. For the Professional Experience, you will be expected to demonstrate that you are competent against the criteria of the competency framework relevant to your job role and CPQ stage. This will be done via an online portfolio and your experience will need to be validated by your employer.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates of the Advanced Stage will be able to hold the professional status of CILEX Advanced Paralegal and will become a regulated Fee Earner. CILEX Advanced Paralegals can then progress onto the CILEX Professional Qualification – Professional Stage to complete further training to become a CILEX Specialist Lawyer. Trainees will complete a mandatory module entitled Professional Skills. This module will require you to complete legal research on a given case study. You will then select your chosen specialist pathway module. Examples of pathways include, but not limited to, residential conveyancing, commercial conveyancing, probate practice and family practice. The modules of criminal litigation, family practice and civil litigation also have an advocacy requirement attached to them which will need to be completed.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will be assessed by a mixture of internal formative assessments, case study portfolio, professional experience portfolio and external examinations throughout the duration of your training programme.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates will be qualified CILEX Specialist Lawyers in their chosen legal area and receive all relevant practice rights. Graduates can choose to specialise in additional areas by completing additional modules.

CILEX Professional Qualification Graduate Route

The CPQ Graduate Route is designed to reflect the legal knowledge you have already acquired as part of your degree and to allow you to focus on your chosen area of practice. You will specialise from day one of your programme and can qualify as a CILEX Lawyer within as little as two years. The course is also designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to study through a blended delivery model consisting of face-to-face delivery and online learning. All trainees will be required to become members of CILEX and, as a law graduate, you’ll join CILEX as a CILEX Paralegal and begin specialising immediately.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Trainees will enter the programme at Advanced Stage and will complete a variety of modules including civil litigation and criminal practice, as well as conveyancing and wills and probate, with some additional material on legal accounts and legal technology. You will then select modules based on your chosen area of practice, for example, conveyancing, family law and wills and probate. You will also be required to complete two e-learning modules which focus on professional ethics and responsibilities alongside completing a professional portfolio demonstrating specific work-based competencies. Upon completion of the Advanced Stage, you will progress

onto the Professional Stage where you will be required to complete a Professional Skills Portfolio alongside your chosen pathway module, based on your specialist area of practice, for example, civil litigation, residential conveyancing, and commercial conveyancing. You will also be required to complete a further professional portfolio which consists of demonstrating higherlevel work-based competencies. If you are paying for your course, the College can arrange for an upfront payment in full or set up a payment plan.

What are the loan options?

Advanced Learner Loan

If you are planning to study a level 3-6 further education course or Access to Higher Education programme and you are aged 19+ you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. Students can apply for a loan to meet the upfront costs of their qualification, which will be paid directly to the College on their behalf.

Repayments only start when earning an annual salary of £27,295* or more. If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to successfully complete a higher education course you won’t have to pay back your Advanced Learner Loan.
