Simon named a finalist for AoC Higher Education Student of the Year Hard work and determination are second nature to college student Simon. For the Redcar granddad, this has meant overcoming his childhood fears of the classroom to retrain and start a new career on a hospital ward, starting work at the height of Covid. Returning to the classroom was quite a challenge for Simon, however he has gone on to excel in his studies and has just been announced as a finalist for the AoC Higher Education Student of the Year award! Never a fan of school he had always hid away at the back. It was after a string of jobs over the years that he decided he wanted to work for the NHS and braved a return to the classroom. “I kept telling myself I was too old to start my training,” he said. Fortunately, he didn’t give in to the doubts. Simon, 51, went on to complete his access to higher education in health diploma at the college before moving on to Cert HE in

Health and Social Care, and FdSc Health, Wellbeing and Social Support courses. Volunteering to work at The James Cook University Hospital mid pandemic, Simon went on to be offered a job, he is now a healthcare assistant in critical care. He said: “The first time I came to college, I was the quiet lad sat at the back of the class again, just like school. But eventually, I started moving to the front of the class.” Nominating him for the AoC Higher Education Student of the Year Award, Redcar and Cleveland College’s Michelle Kelso said: “To think that one of my students has stood up there and, in a way, risked his own life to help preserve other people’s lives, I am just an extremely proud tutor.” There are just four AoC Student of the Year titles up for grabs and winners will be announced in the New Year.

Kelly Graduation 2021

For some it had been a year in the waiting, but higher education students from Redcar and Cleveland College finally got the chance to shine a spotlight on their achievements. In caps and gowns, the college’s class of 2020 and 2021 celebrated at the newly restored Grade II listed Kirkleatham Walled Garden. With last year’s college graduation postponed due to the pandemic, principal Jason Faulkner said: “What a fantastic way

to finally be able to recognise our students’ remarkable achievements in what has proven to be a challenging two years.” Both humbled and proud of their determination and achievements, he added: “It’s incredible to see those here today, able to celebrate with friends and family.” The graduation ceremony saw 76 students celebrating their personal success; among them Redcar and Cleveland College’s own programme area lead for sport, public services and service industries, Kelly Coupland.

Receiving a BA (Hons) in Education and Training and valedictory speaker for the class of 2021, she said: “As teachers we are always trying to encourage people to continue to learn throughout their lives. That is exactly what I have been doing, increasing my knowledge and personal development.” Faced with the demands of juggling her studies around the demands of the day job, as well as studying in lockdown, she said: “This was something I wanted to do for me. It has been both challenging and rewarding.”

Remembrance Service Redcar and Cleveland College students and members of the local community marked Remembrance Day by hosting a Service of Remembrance. The service remembers pupils and staff from the Sir William Turner School, killed in action during the First and Second World Wars; 350 of the school’s “Old Boys” fought in the First World War, 48 dying in active service, and 650 served during the Second World War and 55 lost their lives. Now in its 99th year, the service offers the chance to share some of the details about the real people behind the names listed on the granite cross at the corner of the college grounds or a bronze memorial plaque inside the college. Each name is also written on a small memorial cross and laid by students and members of the congregation alongside the wreaths during the ceremony.

Reading a memorial to one of the “Old Boys”, Redcar and Cleveland College’s policing student, Paige, 16, said: “It felt important to be involved in the ceremony and remember those that have fallen.” Public Services student, Samuel, 20, added: “I felt proud to be a part of the service.”

What better way to raise money for a good cause than indulging in a slice of cake? That’s what students and staff at Redcar and Cleveland College have been doing, as we joined in for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Volunteers from the campus prepared a feast of sweet treats to help get the cash rolling in. Heading up the action, marketing officer Connor Kerr said: “This event means such a lot to so many people, it has become an activity we look forward to on the college calendar. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and

understands the impact it has on the whole family. This is our opportunity to show that we care.” The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support’s largest fundraising event to support people living with cancer. People are invited to host their own coffee morning with all donations going to the charity. All of our campuses across the Education Training Collective got involved too, including Stockton Riverside College, Bede Sixth Form, NETA Training and The Skills Academy. In just a few short hours the colleges together raised more than £500 For Macmillan Cancer Support.
