Hello

My name is Jason Faulkner and I have been the Principal at Redcar and Cleveland College since 2018. During this time the college has made rapid progress with improved attendance, student numbers and achievement rates. Prior to 2018, the college had experienced some difficult years, but I truly believe that our local community of Redcar and Cleveland now has a further education college to be proud of and a college which truly sits at the heart of our local community. I am so passionate about our local community and seeing it prosper. Studying locally has never been more important. Redcar and Cleveland College is the further education college for the Redcar and Cleveland borough, and it would be fantastic to see your child choose to study here from September 2021. We have aligned our curriculum and facilities to the industry needs of our borough, with brand new facilities in areas such as engineering, health and social care and sport. We believe there has never been a better time to study locally at Redcar and Cleveland College. Dealing with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic over the last year has been really challenging for everyone. Your child may have spent a lot of time outside of the classroom and this is a real concern for everyone right now as they approach their final few months in school, however I want to reassure you that no matter what happens with their GCSE

examinations and results later this year, there will be a place and the offer of support at Redcar and Cleveland College. I would like to invite you to our upcoming online Parents’ Information Event on Thursday 4th February 2021 from 5pm to 7pm. This event is a great opportunity for you to find out more information about options for next steps after leaving school. You may have questions such as what courses does Redcar and Cleveland College offer? How does my child apply to study there? What support is available? Transport and access availability? We will be available during the event to answer your questions via live chat. If you can’t make the 5pm start of the event, don’t worry you can join anytime up until 7pm. You can book your place by going to: www.cleveland.ac.uk/ parents-infoevent Best Wishes, Jason Faulkner

SIX WAYS TO HELP THE SCHOOL LEAVER IN YOUR FAMILY DECIDE ON THEIR NEXT STEPS… We asked the Etc.’s Group Student Recruitment Manager, Conor McKerlie, for his top tips for how you can help the school leaver in your family decide on their next steps…

1

Start the conversation

Conor says: “Helping a young person in your family to choose the right route after school can be difficult at the best of times, especially if they haven’t settled on a future career. This year those decisions may seem even more difficult with the additional challenges brought about by the pandemic such as not being able to take part in college visits or course taster sessions.

“It’s so important to talk to the school leaver in your family and find out what information and advice they have already been given. By now they should

have had a chat with their school careers advisor. You might just be surprised at how many options they are already aware of.”

2

Identify the subjects they are good at and those they enjoy

“If they don’t have a particular career in mind then chatting about the subjects they perform well in and like best is a good place to start, often these will be the same. Not surprisingly we all tend to perform better in the subjects we enjoy most.”

3

Discuss how they prefer to learn

“Whether it’s developing hands-on practical skills, learning through work or more academic classroom-based learning, thinking about the way students learn is key to helping choose those next steps. Remember there’s more than one entry route into every career destination, so it’s worth doing your homework! Be informed, did you know a level 3 vocational qualification can be worth the same UCAS (university entry) points as three A levels?

4

Explore every option

“It never hurts to have more than one plan in place. The good news is students can apply for several courses, and even to different colleges, and not make a final decision until July, August or even September. “Even if your school leaver thinks they know what they want to do next, it never hurts to take a look at all options. While face-to-face events are on hold at the moment there’s lots of online open events taking place. “If your son or daughter wants to do an apprenticeship but hasn’t got that all important job offer yet, encourage them to sign up for a relevant course so they can build their skills while they wait and help them stand out from the crowd.”

5

Ask your questions

“Open events, information sessions and tours, both online and in college, are a chance to get answers to all your questions, so whether it’s course information, bus routes, bursary information or student support, this is your opportunity to focus on the details. “That is why we are offering an event specifically for parents and guardians to see what our college has to offer, so you can ask any questions and be better prepared to lend a hand when it comes to helping the school leaver in your family make those final decisions.”

6

Finally don’t forget to listen

“You might think that you know best but don’t forget to listen to what your son/ daughter/school leaver has to say, after all, the final decision is theirs.”
