Originating from the harlequin checkerboard pattern, the QR Code is a modern interpretation of the historical elements represented within the College of Human Ecology. Martha Van Rensselaer, the founder of CHE, is known for her kitchen triangle, a kitchen layout that streamlines by saving steps. QR codes streamline the exchange of information by storing data within a square image. To connect our past with the present, Martha’s will incorporate a streamlined process and become a hub for exchanging information about CHE. The design uses the key elements in QR codes - Position, Alignment, and Timing - as the framework for strengthening relationships between spaces, the process of finding Martha’s and ordering, and the food offerings at Martha’s.

To connect CHE residents, “The Hub” utilizes furniture that allows for multiple uses and group sizes. This modular furniture system creates an activity for when people are waiting, but also allows for a variety of seating configurations. They are scattered throughout the Martha’s area, but are concentrated in The Hub.
