Every year without fail, the over six month process of bringjng the festival to the San Diego Border Region, is full of highs and lows for all of the many tireless volunteers and staff involved. As Latino culture continues to gain popularity and influence in mainstream America and Hollywood, the 2005 San Diego Latino Film Fesrival is proud to hold true to the original vision of the first festival twelve years ago. Last Year, the SDLFF started a new tradition of inviting an acclaimed filmmaker to be our "Guest Director." This individual will curate a sidebar of three films that have influenced his/her career in a profound way. This year's Guest Director is the acclaimed Mexican filmmaker, Luis Mandoki. TIEIHCTOR'SCHAil:WISMMIDOIII As one of the first Mexican directors of the currenr generation to break inco Holly-wood in the late 80s, Luis Mandok i helped open the door for other cineasces from south of the border to rea lize their visions in the US film industry . His first film, Gaby: A True Story (1987 ), received nominatons for both the Oscars and the Golden Globes. In the ensu ing nvo decades, Luis Mandoki has worked with such stars as Andy Garcia, Jennifer Lopez, Paul Kewman, Meg Ryan, Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, Kevin Bacon. James Spader and Charlize Theron. His films include Whit.e Palace (1990 ), When a Man L oves a Woman (1994), Message ma Bottle (1999 ), Angel Eyes (2001 ) and Trapped (2002) . His latest feature, the remarkable Voces Inocentes, is Mandoki's first Spanish-language film in more than 15 years. We were curious co know which 6lms influenced him. So we asked Luis Mandoki ro select three films which he felr changed his life and to tell us why. These are the three films he chose. THEBmt.EOfAUBS (1965) 1 saw Battle of Algiers first, and it was a movie that really impressed me, because ir was a true story, and it was just so real and it involves a child as well. And so, for me ir brought the same feeling of strength and compassion and what people go through. And you're thrown imo a reality, io the way it's shot, in the way it's done, and che absurdities of war that they are all living in. And so it shook me, because I didn't know about chat reality, and it brought me into it in a very human unhollywood way. I think I was sixteen or seventeeen. THEHUMAN CONIIITION: NOGIDilR LOVE (1958) A few months larer I saw The Human Condition, which is not about children, bur it's abour soldiers in the middle of a war, and what I loved abour it is rbar you see them also in the moments of battJe, and you see rhem in the momems in berween the battles. And you see how war, which is an extreme state of ljfe, brings out the best and the worst of people. And so, in a way it makes you realize that when you're not living in those extreme stares we go to sleep, and we forget what's precious abour life. And many times comfortable life makes you go into a state of anaesthesia. I'm nor saying we should live in rimes of war to bring that out, but that we THE BATTLE OFALGIERS : should always be aware that death is around the comer, and so we should make the best SUNDAY , MARCH 20, 4:00PM out of every moment. ROCCO MD IDSBROTI161S (1960) You know, it's interesting, because I saw it many years ago, and I haven't seen it since. So I don't know a lot of details about it. But I do know chat it was a movie that had a lot of impact on me because it deals with the struggle of a family in difficult circumstances, the relationships within the family, and it's a complex movie that deals with the love and also the pain and the conflict. And so I remember rhat it touched me deeply, because there's very few movies which deal so deeply and so honestly with family issues in different circum stances. I think neoreahsm is Yery close to Mexico . The obvious neorealisric movies like Bicycle Thief and Milagro en Milan, but rhis movie is .. .I don'r know why it's nor so wellknown . And yes it could almost take place in Mexico, the same story, the same characters, except they're a little louder than the Italians.

The female Valentino. Pinnacle of earthly beauty. Dolores del Rfo has always elicited extreme , and even contradictory reac tions. Her stardom crossed national borders and spanned six decades. The San Diego Latino Film Festival's presentation of her films offers a glimpse into her complexity as an actress , the range of her talent, the inability to define and categorize her, and the .inadequacy of words to des.cribe her presence on screen.
In 1904, she was born to an aristocratic family in Durango. Del Rio was 21 and performing in a dance recital when she instantly captivated the vacationing Hollywood director Edwin Carewe. E venrualJy he cast her in such silent films as Rmrwna ( 1928) and Evangeline ( 1929). Carewe also helped Del Rio craft a persona that she would cultivate into the 1930s; a curious blend between per formances that exuded an exo tic, primal sensuality and a public life that cast her as the height of modem elegance and sophistication.

Mexican writer and social commentator Carlos Monsivais writes and lectures extensivel-y on Latin American culture, society and cinema.
Hollywood's fascination with ethnicity during this period -Latin lovers, jungle films, and blackface perlormance pushed her into a succession of roles that emphasized her "otherness": She was cast as the Mexican cantina girl Girl of the Rio (1932), the Russian peasant Resurrection {1927}, the gypsy Revenge (1928), the island princess Bird of Paradise (1932), and the Parisian tango dancer Wonder Bar (1934).
Faced with an increasing scarcity of qual ity roles in Hollywood (and following a stormy romance with Orson Welles), Del Rio returned to Mexico in 1942 and joined a burgeoning Mexican film industry. Achieving fame in nationalist melodramas directed by Emilio Fernandez and photographed by Gabriel Figueroa, her screen persona underwent an abrupt transformation to win over an initially skeptic.al Mexican public.
In films like Flor Sil vestre (1943) and Maria Candelaria (1944), Del Rfo shed both her elegance and alluring sexuality to portray a hwnble peasant , a tragically self-sacrificial embodiment of ideal femininity: the symbolic mother of a post -revolutionary Mexico. Such roles immediately enshrined her as a legend, and created an indelible cinematic vision of a national mythology. Dolores del Rio, along with actors including Pedro Infante, Cantinflas , Pedro Armendariz . and Maria Felix became synonymous with the Golden Age of Mexican cinema .
By the late I 950's. as the Mexican film industry spiraled into decline and chronic crisis, Del Ri'o performed in fewer films and eventually resumed a career in Hollywood. as did many of her compatriots. Del Rfo died in 1983, having enjoyed a length) ' and diverse career. Somehow embodying aU the adjectives nsed to describe her persona and career, she ultimately transcends them; this persistence of the ineffable fuels the devotion of fans on both sides of the border, and ensures the allegiance of future generations to the cult of Dolores. Please join us at this year's festival in spotlighting the important work they all have done in promoting a more positive and accurate portrayal of Latinos in front and behind the camera! DNYlHEJO He's made a career out of playmg criminals, appearing as a fierce bad-ass in films such as Con Arr, From Dusk till Dawn, Heat. Bur before Danny Trejo started playing bad guys, he was one. Crimes including armed robbery and drug charges put Trejo behind bars, in his words, in "every penitentiary in the stare of California" for 11 years. While serving time, he became a boxing champ at San Quentin. When he got out, in 1985, he decided to turn his life around and give up drugs and alcohol . He was on a movie set, visiting a friend dur ing a prison scene, when he was approached with an offer that put him on a new course. • it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard . I'd been in Soledad, San Quentin, Folson, Vacaville, Susanville, Sierra - and nere's a guy asking 'Can you act like a convict?' I remember I said, 'I'll give it a shot'· It was the start of a new life on the screen . Since then, Trejo has appeared in over 90 feature films including Spy Kids and Once Upon a Time in Mexico and 17 tele.,ision shows ("NYPD Blue," "X" files, "Alias," "'Monk .") He'll be a special guest at the San Diego foe the Latino Film Festival premiere of CHAMPION, a new documentary offering an intima te view imo Trejo>s life, starting with his troubled child hood in Echo Park through to his
tum-around. Though he's best known for playing villains ·and thugs, roday he volunteers to talk to school kids about the dead-end life that cost him years behind bars.

She's a versatile actress who,s won the hearts of critics and audiences for her roles in television, film and theater during a career that's spanned 50 years and earned her many of Mexico's top acting honors. Carmen Salinas is best known ro for eign audiences for her recent feature film roles appearing tbe gritty Mexican hit Todo el Poder {1999 ) and most recently in Man on Fire (USA 2003) starring Denzel Washington. Born in Torreon, Coahuila, Salinas got her stan as a singer at local festivals where she charmed crowds who threw coins at her feet. She went on to achieve modest success in her hometown on live radio and local television. In the 1950s, Salinas moved to Mexico City to build her career from the ground up, starting with bit parts in variety shows. le was 1964 when she lande d her first
role in a Mexican soap opera, La Vecindad, and her career took off. Just five years later, Salinas had her film debm in the feature film La Vida Jnutil de Pito Perez (The Useless Life of Pito Perez). Her acting earned Salinas her first nomination for a coveted Diosa de Plara award. Ac the end of 1994 , she appeared on stage in "Cada Quien su Vida" ("'To Each His Own Life") and in 1995, earned all the majo r prizes given co an actress in :'vlexican cheater. Salinas marked her 50th year as an actress in 2003 , receiving numerous accolades and honors. Today, Mexican audiences know and love her both as a soap and movie queen, and as an acrress, producer and director of Mexico's favorite long -running £heater show "Avenrurera".

Make way for Maya & Miguel, the 10-year -old Latino twins whose bilingual animated aventuras are lending Latino sabor to PBS television. Each episode of the new half-hour comedy presents the jchevere! (cool!) duo speaking Spanish and English as they introduce an elementary school-age audience to a vibrant portrayal of Latino familia, language and cultura.
The performing arts do more than entertain. They inspire us and teach us. They encourage us to grow as individuals and as communities.
Funny and often outrageous, the show revolves around Maya's weU-intended meddling in the lives of her family and friends. She's consrandy dreaming up "Big Ideas" and roping Miguel into her schemes. Maya and Miguel live with their Mexican immigrant Mama and Puerto Rican-born Papi who run a neighborhood pet store. Abuela Elena, their grand.mother, lives next door and keeps the family grounded in tradition. living upstairs are Tio Ernesto, Tia Teresa and cousin Tito, recent immigrants from Mexico who are learning English.

Cover Artist Bio Alfredo de Batuc Los Angeles Chicano artist Alfredo de Batuc is a painter aod public artist whose wo rks ha\·e been exhibited internationally for the lase two decades. A mainstay of the Los Angeles arr scene, de Batuc first studied at che Academia <leArtes Plascicas in Hermosillo. He moved to Los Angeles at the age of 25, where he began working on seriographs at Self H elp Graphics. Mr. DeBatuc 's art resides in the colleccions of manr museums , includ ing the Los Angeles Museum of An, Self Help Graphics, the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Museo £studio Diego Rivera and the Insriruto Nacional de Antropologia e Hiscoria in Mexico Ciry. As part of the San Diego Latino Film Festiual, the Media Arts Center San Diego's Teen Producers Project will be screening highlights of Tu Voz TV on Wednesday, March 16th at 6:00 p.m at Mann Theatres Hazard Center. A special advance screening for local students will also take place at 10:00 a.m. the same day. Tu Voz TV is a multi-lingual expression of youth voices from the San Diego - Tijuana border region. The television series showcases video projects produced, written, shot and edited by local youth. Their work is aimed at bringing people together across ethnic, racial and generational lines to share stories and find common ground for addressing community concerns.

MSSIONSWEMBO: Media Arts Center San Diego nurtures and supports media artists working in film, video, audio, and computer-based multimedia. The organization was found ed co challenge the historical exclusion of under-represented communities from che media field, and distorted images of these communities by mainstream media. MACSD seeks to provide a forum for and prom0te the diversity of interests of San Diego Border Region media artists through regular screenings, educacional outreach, distribution, film festivals, production and technical assistance, scholar ships and fiscal sponsorships .
BAGUROUrlJ: The initial concept for the organization began ten years ago as "Cine Esrudiantil: The Chicano & Native American Student Film Fescival". University and high school students participated in film screenings, discussions and community action projects, using the .Latino film genre as the impetus. Now known as the San Diego Latino Film Festival , SDLFF has developed into one of the larger and well-respected Latino film festivals in the country. Over 80,000 people have attended during the past ten years and 600 fikns/vi deos from across Latin America and the United Scates have been screened. Past festiva l guests have included sucli renowned individua ls as Alfonso Cuaron Diego l una, Gael Garcia Berna l, Rodrig~ Prieto, Carlos Cauron, Paul Rodriguez, Luis Valdez, Tony Plana, Lupe Ontiveros, Elpidia Carrillo, Lourdes Portillo , Arturo Ripstein, Gregory Nava, Patssi Valdez, Edward James Olmos, Mocte suma Esparza, Ray Bradbury , Jacob Vargas, Nancy de lo.s Santos and hundreds of other emerg ing and established Latino filmmakers ..

EKIIIBfflON Annual San Diego Latino Film Festiual: celebrates films and videos by Larinos and/or about the Lanno experience. Each year approximately 100 film and video makers visit rhe festival, 17,000 locals arcend and over 100 works are screened from across Latin America and throughour the United States. Cinema en tu Idioma: A month.Ir showcase of the best and latest Sp~nishlanguage Cinema. Every month over 2,000 San Diegans are pcovided with the rare opponunity to see films thar are normally not distributed in this region. Open Screening Night: Monthly screening featuring new San Diego / Tijuana area shorts, free popcorn, refreshments, and networking opportunities in MACSD's "microcinema,. (i.e. our Living Room }! YOOTHNIDA Teen Producers Project: is a media literacy and video production program geared for youth from diverse economic and culturaJ backgrounds living in the San Diego/Tijuana border region. Teen Producers Project provides yourh access to much -needed equipmen t and resources for the production and exhibit ion of film, video, audio and digital projects. The Teen Producers Project works with over 200 youth per year in partnership with MAAC Proj ect, San Diego County Office of Education 's Migrant Education Program , ACCESS, and San Diego Youth at Work's Yo Spot. Currently, the Teen Producers Project is producing a monrhly youth -pro duced television show, TU
