25th Anniversary San Diego Latino Film Festival Souvenir Program

Page 1

WELCO M E B I ENV ENI D O ¥Bienvenidos! Welcome to the 25th Anniversary San Diego Latino Film Festival! Wow. Incredible, how time has flown by! I am overwhelmed to realize all of the unique movies we’ve screened; the live bands that have played; the visual artists who have exhibited their works; the visiting filmmakers/actors who have attended and shared their craft; and all of the lives that this film festival has touched during an amazing twenty-five years! Looking through past festival catalogues to research information before this film festival even had a webpage, and combing through 1000s of photos, reminds me how extremely fortunate our organization is. So many filmmakers, actors, staff persons, volunteers, Board Members, family members, and attendees have given much of their precious time to come together. We’ve worked hard to celebrate great Latino Cinema that empowers new voices to be heard, and expresses the many diverse stories of the Latino Experience, which otherwise would never have seen a movie screen in this San Diego - Baja California region. All of the long hours and dedicated work also allowed our non-profit organization, Media Arts Center San Diego (MACSD), to be formed and sustainable. Via MACSD, 1000s of youth and community members have been telling their own stories through the years; and at the same time, learning educational, cooperative, and video production skills. This is both a time to celebrate and also to reflect upon all of the challenging work still ahead of us. We are living in extremely difficult times; and this past year has shown us how much still needs to be done! We need to make sure more women filmmakers are making more movies; and that the male-dominated film industry is transformed. We need to celebrate our diversity and make sure more Latinos are better represented in front of and behind the cameras. And, finally, we need to continue to create stories that better humanize the Border, refugee and immigration experiences; so that once and for all we can rid our country of intolerance and individual and institutional racism. During the next eleven days, we will do our best to celebrate and to honor our 25 year history as a film festival; and we will take bold steps to present new and innovative movies from the next generation of Latino filmmakers. As you sit back and enjoy both the films from the past and the new movies; remember, we are only here today because of the sacrifice and hard work of those artists, community members, scholars, activists, filmmakers, and actors who have paved the way for us and opened so many doors. Thank you for all the years of support. Nos vemos en el cine!

¡ D O C UM A N I A ! SHOWCA SE The documentary tradition is an art form that has never been as essential as it is today, particularly when it comes to defining Latino identity. As people in power and the mainstream media continue to misconstrue and misunderstand what it means to be Latino, it falls on artists, in this case filmmakers, to capture and then disseminate the non-fiction experiences of Latinos. In doing so, the definition of what it means to be Latino becomes broader but at the same time, more accurate, leaving less room for false conjectures about what it means to be Latino.
