WELCOME BIENVENIDO ¡Bienvenidos!

Dear Film Enthusiasts, Wow! 27 years! Unbelievable to think how far our film festival and non-profit has grown and evolved over these many years. Our strength and sustainability is all because of YOU - the film festival attendee, lover of Latino Cinema, lover of international/ independent cinema, film student, community partner, staff, volunteer, and/or sponsor. For that, our nonprofit, Media Arts Center San Diego, and I will be forever

grateful. Despite the exhaustion and constant struggle to make the event a reality each year, I am reminded of the power of cinema as a unifying force to bring so many people together in a celebration of Latino Culture/ Cinema; and more importantly to combat the negative stereotypes and hateful images continually perpetuated by mainstream television and unfortunately by our current Federal Government. After so many years of organizing this film festival and running this incredible non-profit; there’s only one constant I know. 2020 will be full of changes, ups, and downs. However, we must continue to convene, move towards goals, fight, celebrate diversity, help those in need, produce Latinx content (films, television, webisodes, etc.) and educate others via films festivals, movie theaters; or other new innovative channels; so that we leave this world a better place for future generations.

The beauty of film is how deeply connected it is to the spirit of community-building -- Movie sets are populated by a crew of passionate artists pooling together their various talents to give life to moving pictures; movie theaters are bustling venues where people from different walks of life come together, sit in a dark room, and are actively connected by the mechanics of a projector (Don’t believe me? Listen next time to see which audience members laugh at the same on-screen jokes you’re guffawing it… those are you new best friends); and film festivals are venues where fellow cinephiles become family. The joy of this festival is seeing friends, both old and new, unite to celebrate the beautiful complexities of the Latinx experience TOGETHER. As for the films… I’ll let them speak for themselves. Suffice it to say, this batch of filmmakers are ready to set the world ablaze with their cinematic provocactions. Lastly, I’d like to dedicate this edition, and any subsequent iterations of this festival that I am a part of, to Helen Guzman, a key member of the SDLFF team for many years, who will forever grace the festival with her spirit and serve as a constant reminder that nothing compares to family. Sincerely,

Enjoy the amazing 11 days of the best in Latino Cinema! Nos vemos en el cine,

Moisés Esparza, Exhibitions Manager

REVOLUCIONES FILMS SHOWCASE A collection of films about spirited individuals who, in the face of oppression, strike back against systems of power in pursuit of liberation.

THE FIRST RAINBOW COALITION Dir. Ray Santisteban 3/21 / 4:00 / S10 (USA, 56 min., 2019, English, Activism)

The First Rainbow Coalition charts the history and legacy of a groundbreaking multi-ethnic coalition that rocked Chicago in the 1960s. Comprised of activists from the Black Panthers, the Young Patriots (southern whites), and the Young Lords (a former Puerto Rican street gang), Chicago’s Rainbow Coalition (1969-1971) united poor blacks, whites, and Latinos to openly challenge police brutality and substandard housing in one of the most segregated cities in America. What began as a drive to achieve a voice for poor communities quickly grew into a formidable political movement, attracting the support of other disenfranchised groups and the attention of a threatened FBI and Chicago political machine.

MARIGHELLA Dir. Wagner Moura 3/16 / 8:40 / S9 3/19 / 4:00 / DGC (Brazil, 155 min., 2019, Portuguese w/ English subtitles; English, Political Drama)

This feature film is a celebration of Carlos Marighella, played brilliantly by musician and actor, Jorge Seu. In 1960s Brazil, ruled by a violent military dictatorship, Marighella leads a small group of guerillas in an armed struggle against the regime. Relentlessly pursued as the government's number one enemy, Marighella cleverly evades capture; all the while continuing to inflict damage and further enraging his pursuers. With exhilarating action sequences, this rousing historical film has a powerful resonance in the present of Brazil and beyond. Content Advisory: This film contains strong sequences of torture, viewer discretion is advised.

NEBAJ Dir. Kenneth Müller 3/20 / 6:30 / S10 3/22 / 3:15 / S10 (Guatemala, 74 min., 2019, Spanish w/ English subtitles, Political Drama)

The feature film narrates from a human and cruel perspective the facts about the uprising and flight of the “Ixil” Indians in Guatemala, a group that managed to survive the massacre against them led by the EGP (Guerrilla Army of the Poor) in the eighties. The Ixiles were led by Tomás Guzaro (Fernando Cuautle) on their way to freedom. The Guatemalan civil war was one of the bloodiest in Latin America, pointing to the Guatemalan army as responsible for the indigenous genocide when other realities existed that virtually no filmmaker had dared to tell until the arrival of “Nebaj”. Content Advisory: This film contains strong sequences of torture, viewer discretion is advised.

YOUR TURN Dir. Eliza Capai 3/12 / 4:30 / S9 3/13 / 9:20 / S9

3/15 / 3:00 / DGC

(Brazil, 93 min., 2019, Portuguese w/ English subtitles, Documentary)

When Brazil’s economic and social crisis deepened in the last decade, students protested and occupied hundreds of schools, demanding better public education and the end of austerity measures. The feature documentary “Your Turn” depicts the Brazilian student movement from the protests of 2013 until the election of the new president, Jair Bolsonaro, in 2018. Inspired by the collective voice of the movement itself, the documentary is narrated by three high school students, who represent central points of their struggle. The narrators’ jostling for space and time exposes the movement’s conflicts and demonstrates its complexity.

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Lourdes Portillo mines the complicated intersections of analysis and autobiography, evidence and hypothesis, even melodrama and police procedures in this ground-breaking work. Early one Sunday morning, the filmmaker receives a phone call informing her that her beloved Tio Oscar Ruiz Almeida has been found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in Chihuahua, Mexico. The filmmaker returns to the land of her birth to investigate her uncle's identity and death. Finding clues in old tales of betrayal, lust, and supernatural visitation, Portillo blends traditional and experimental techniques to capture the nuances of Mexican social and family order.

The result is a close-up, nuanced, and highly original view of the migrant experience; one fraught with risk and danger but also comradery, ingenuity, and humor. RAÚL JULIÁ: THE WORLD’S A STAGE Dir. Ben DeJesus 3/14 / 11:30 A / S9 3/21 / 4:40 / S9

(United States, 84 min., 2019, English, Biography)

Centered on the remarkable letters by José Lezama Lima to his sister living in exile in the United States, this featurelength documentary Letters to Eloísa tells the story of the Cuban writer’s life and work; weaving together the public and the private, the literary and the political, ultimately to focus on how the writer’s voice, at first amplified by the revolution’s cultural policies, was ultimately silenced by the absence of creative freedom in Cuba during its most tumultuous decades.

From award-winning director, Ben DeJesus (Great Performances: John Leguizamo’s Road to Broadway), Raúl Juliá: The World’s a Stage is a warm and revealing portrait of the actor’s charismatic and groundbreaking journey from his native country of Puerto Rico to the creative hotbed of 1960s New York City, to prominence on Broadway and in Hollywood. Filled with passion, determination, and joy, Juliá’s brilliant and daring career was tragically cut short by his untimely death 25 years ago, at age 54.

What does “Está Rico '' by Marc Anthony, Will Smith & Bad Bunny have in common with “Made For Now” by Janet Jackson and Daddy Yankee? They both high-jacked AfroBeats and did not give the genre’s origin props. Bakosó is a film that does the opposite, following DJ Jigüe to his hometown of Santiago de Cuba to find inspiration from the new sounds. He finds Afrobeats has helped create a new genre called Bakosó, which itself is beautiful proof that the exchange between Cuba and Africa did not end with the Transatlantic slave trade. Through stunning visuals and a score created by the founders of the genre, the film shows the technology, culture and landscape that shape this African-Caribbean fusion.
