PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE 30TH ANNUAL SAN DIEGO LATINO FILM FESTIVAL BOOK TODAY AT SYCUAN.COM MUST BE OVER 21 TO ENTER THE CASINO.
About 30 years ago, I eagerly walked into a meeting with the editors of Voz Fronteriza, the UC San Diego student-run Chicano newspaper, Gene Chavira and Adolfo Guzman-Lopez. I had recently moved to the San Diego-Baja California region, and having produced a Chicano film festival at UC Santa Cruz from 1989 to 1992, I thought it would be great to start a similar film festival here. Thus was born what is now known as the SDLFF. Initially called Cine Estudiantil, the festival was created to spotlight Latinx filmmakers and actors, as well as to combat the negative stereotypes perpetuated by mainstream media.
In terms of technology and viewing habits in the world of cinema and film festivals, much has changed since the first one held in 1994 at UC San Diego, San Diego State University, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and Centro Cultural de la Raza. It used to be that the SDLFF locally was the only place to see U.S.-Latinx and/or Spanish language movies. Now, a quick search online will deliver thousands of movies and television shows available to you as a viewer. So where does this leave a film festival and nonprofit such as ours?
Well, despite the technological advances, the need for such an event still exists. Some advancements have been made in the past 30 years in terms of Latinx representation in front of and behind the camera; however, we still have a long way to go. Negative stereotypes continue to plague our mainstream media, political discourse, and every aspect of Hollywood movies and television shows.
We call to all of you; to continue this fight, support independent Latinx films, and help this festival continue to innovate for the next 30 years.
Thank you for your amazing support and I look forward to enjoying all the wonderful movies on the BIG screen with you all during the next 11 days!
After a postponed film festival, a virtual iteration, and a hybrid edition, I am thrilled this festival’s films will be enjoyed as in-person events in cinemas. It seems fitting that for our 30th edition we would return to this normal mode of operations amidst the turmoil the world has faced over the last couple of years. Even as the festival has changed
