CITIES CONNECTION PROJECT Xavier Bustos + Nicola Regusci

[EN] This project emerges from the determination of CCP (Cities Connection Project) to showcase to the world the architecture designed and built in our city and find connections and professional, economic, and cultural relationships for local young architects. This is in response to an underlying need for internationalisation and the strong determination to share, reflect on, and debate around the social role of public architecture in the building of the city.

The project stems from the shared connection between Barcelona and other European cities with consolidated architectural traditions; it takes the shape of a two-sided, bi-directional architectural exhibition, going back and forth, understood as a meeting place with the core idea of sharing knowledge, debating the different proposals of cities, and understanding the architectural culture of each territory.

So, forty young architecture offices from different geographical areas (20 + 20) have the chance to exhibit their projects together and, from this, share experiences and debate around architectural proposals that build cities.

This is how the two exhibitions intend to bring to Barcelona the specific ways architecture is being made in other European cities, as well as promoting Barcelona’s own architectural culture abroad.

In previous editions, paired with Swiss cities, the debates focused on architecture and territory, social housing, cooperative housing, and public space. This fifth edition, connecting Barcelona with Wallonie-Bruxelles (French Community of Belgium) works with projects with the idea of reactivating the city, understanding the architecture of public facilities (cultural, educational, mixed-use, public spaces‌) as social cohesive devices of special importance in areas with a certain degree of urban decay. Whether it is through new builds in some cases, or recovering pre-existing buildings in others, this theme attracts a great deal of attention in the two cities, given their architectural tradition in urban regeneration, creating a shared space for reflection.

INTRODUCTION

Així, quaranta estudis d’arquitectura joves de diferents àmbits geogràfics (20+20) ténen l’oportunitat d’exposar conjuntament els seus projectes, i en conseqüència, compartir experiències i debatre sobre propostes arquitectòniques que construeixen la ciutat.

Així com en les edicions anteriors, amb ciutats suïsses, s’ha debatut sobre arquitectura i territori, habitatge social, habitatge cooperatiu i espai públic, aquesta cinquena edició, que connecta Barcelona amb Wallonie-Bruxelles, treballa sobre la idea de projectes re-activadors de la ciutat, entenent l’arquitectura dels equipaments públics (culturals, docents, usos mixts, espais públics…) com a cohesionadors socials d’especial importància en zones amb un cert nivell de degradació urbana, mitjançant edificis nous en alguns casos, com recupernat edificis existents en d’altres, temàtica que desperta un gran interès a les dues ciutats per la seva tradició arquitectònica en la renovació urbana, generant un espai compartit de reflexió.

El projecte parteix de la connexió de Barcelona amb altres ciutats d’Europa amb una tradició arquitectònica consolidada mitjançant una doble exposició d’arquitectura pensada en doble sentit, amb anada i tornada, enteses com un lloc de trobada amb la idea de compartir coneixement, debatre les diferents propostes de ciutat i entendre la cultura arquitectònica de cada territori.

Les dues exposicions pretenen, per tant, fer conèixer a Barcelona l’especificitat de l’arquitectura que es realitza en altres ciutats europees, al mateix temps que es promou la cultura arquitectònica de Barcelona a l’exterior.

[EN] The Import WB – Export BCN exhibition is held within the framework of the partnership suggested to Wallonie-Bruxelles Architectures (WBA) by Cities Connection Project, the purpose of which is to create a network of cultural connections between cities and regions that share important architectural traditions, whilst highlighting contemporary architecture and urbanism.

In concrete terms, each connection would be divided into two successive phases in each of the two cities taking part in the exchange, with at the same time a series of events such as debates, publications, visits and an exhibitions revolving around a common theme and generating a shared area for thought.

In response to this proposal, WBA entrusted Nicola Regusci and Xavier Bustos with the creation of an exhibition centred on the reuse of existing spaces, combined uses and urban reconstruction. Supported by a publication, it presents 20 Wallonia-Bruxelles projects and 20 others from Barcelona.

Through this exhibition, the goal is to mutually display the works that best represent each country’s avant-garde architecture - focusing on designs from the last ten years.

Each presentation leaves in its wake a plethora of architects - knowing that Cities Connection Project’s main goal is to forge synergies between institutions, universities and most importantly guest architects.

The Import WB – Export BCN exhibition is typical of the way in which WBA circulates and promotes Walloon and Brussels’ architectural practices on an international scale: On the occasion of a presentation of the work carried out by a panel of architects selected according to a specific theme or critical angle, a series of events are organised so people could exchange, forge links, and enhance their professional, economic and cultural networks.

Our hope is that this exhibition will be an opportunity to discover a French speaking Belgian scene that is bold, creative and socially involved, where users are the core focus, and that it will be food for thought and exchanges on the social role of architecture in constructing a city.

Nous souhaitons que cette exposition soit l’occasion de vous faire découvrir une scène belge francophone à la fois audacieuse, créative et impliquée socialement, où l’usager reste constamment au cœur des préoccupations et qu’elle nourrisse la réflexion et les échanges sur le rôle social de l’architecture dans la construction de la ville.

Il s’agit, par le biais de cette exposition de montrer réciproquement les réalisations qui représentent le mieux l’architecture d’avant-garde de chaque territoire, en privilégiant les réalisations des dix dernières années.

Pour répondre à cette proposition, WBA a confié à Nicola Regusci et à Xavier Bustos la conception d’une exposition centrée sur la réutilisation d’espaces existants, l’usage mixte et la reconstruction de la ville. Soutenue par une publication, elle présente 20 projets Wallonie-Bruxelles et 20 projets barcelonais.

Concrètement, chaque connexion se déroule en deux temps. – successivement dans chacune des deux villes qui participent à l’échange –, avec en marge une série d’événements - débats, publication, visites et une exposition articulés autour d’une thématique commune générant un espace de réflexion partagé.

Chaque présentation draine dans son sillage une importante délégation d’architectes, le principal objectif de Cities Connection Project étant de créer des synergies entre les institutions, les universités et surtout les architectes invités. L’exposition Import WB – Export BCN est emblématique de la manière dont WBA assure la diffusion et la promotion internationales des pratiques du secteur architectural de Wallonie et de Bruxelles : A l’occasion d’une présentation de la production d’un panel d’architectes sélectionnés selon une thématique ou un angle critique particulier, une série de rencontres et d’événements sont organisés offrant autant d’occasions d’échanger, de tisser des liens, de développer son réseau qu’il soit professionnel, économique ou culturel.

[FR] L’exposition Import WB – Export BCN s’inscrit dans le cadre du partenariat proposé à Wallonie-Bruxelles Architectures (WBA) par Cities Connection Project, dont l’objectif est de créer un réseau de connexions culturelles entre des villes et régions partageant une importante tradition architecturale, tout en mettant en valeur l’architecture et l’urbanisme contemporains.

Combining process and procedure

[EN] “The Belgian scene boasts a form of quality, humanism and poetry”, states issue no. 425 of Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, focusing on Belgian architecture. It must be said that over the last fifteen years, a spatial quality has sprung from architecture originating from Wallonia-Brussels in particular. This stems from an alliance between a specific architectural approach based on process and construction proficiency, and a pro-active architectural policy.

For the last thirty years, this project approach has been developed thanks to housing construction orders. This is of course the most widespread kind of order, as any self-respecting Belgian wants to build their own house - and to do so an architect is legally required, even if it only for a simple extension. This approach is thus user-centred and founded on the idea that we can “make do with”. We can make do with the current context, often synonym of low budgets, and of course make do with the future user.

Talking about and analysing the order, questioning it, defining and refining it, and finally designing it based on proficient knowledge learnt in the finest Belgian Universities. Through all this it stays in the hands of the architect until final delivery. These support measures, regarding both the order and its commissioner and learnt through practice, served architects at the time when competitive calls were made mandatory by European bodies in 1993 for the completion of public works. A new kind of order thus appeared, surrounded by stuttering procedures.

They felt (and sometimes still feel) more like the formulation of a question coupled with a (generally low) budget than a “standardised” competition, as established in Switzerland or France. Yet that lack of clarity is precisely where an architect’s ingenuity can insinuate itself. In supporting the

creation of the order, the architect takes a handle on the project and only lets it go right at the very end. This approach, shared by several firms, means that contemporary architecture in Belgium is not a question of “style” or the result of “star architects”, but rather a precise, committed and single response to each order.

The downside is however palpable and cripples often small Belgian architectural firms. This upstream work is sometimes just too much, and is rarely recognised financially. “Making do with” thus becomes “making do despite” - which also results from a change in the construction context over the last fifteen years. “Doing” this form of architecture that stands strong and is proof of high quality “despite” low budgets, dealing with lots of standardised constraints, the lack of recognition for the architectural trade, the growing number of legal suits, etc.

Yet this approach and its result were soon valued and supported. This “architectural and spatial quality” has become a leitmotiv and even a fight for the last twenty-five years for certain people in the world of Belgian architecture. They made the most of competitive calls to introduce it. Heard by politicians, public bodies were born to help with public or private project ownership, required to formalise architecture service contracts. Each region and each community created its own structures: Vlaams Bouwmeester in Flanders (1999), Cellule Architecture in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (2007), Bouwmeester-Maître Architecte in BrusselsCapital (2009). Some cities even wanted to establish this type of structure at their own small level, such as Antwerp (1999), Charleroi (2013) and Ghent (2017). These structures offer procedures founded

mostly on quality criteria - such as habitability, urbanism, technical approach, etc. - placing the budget criterion in last position. They also banished anonymous competitions, to encourage competitive procedures with negotiations. Commissioners are now able to choose a project and project team.

Similarly, procedures for activating urban renovation - based on dialogue - are slowly emerging. They rely on this architectural approach that also meets current challenges aiming to reuse what already exists (structures, materials, etc.)

- inherent to real estate in Belgian towns, where renovation is widely favoured and the “palimpsest” logic is key. The procedure for Sustainable district contracts thus appeared in 1994. These Contracts link the region of Brussels-Capital to its 19 surrounding communes, to fight the rise in unstable neighbourhoods and long administrative lead times regarding construction. A form of “acupuncture urbanism” was thus born, and among hundreds of others, the project acclaimed by the Emerging Architectural Prize Mies van der Rohe for 2017: the Navez Portaels social housing by the MSA and V+ firms.

This prize - as stated by Anna Ramos, Director of the Foundation - rewards “a heroic and ordinary approach”. An approach which all the projects presented in this exhibition can boast.

Cette démarche de projet s’est développée depuis une trentaine d’années autour de la commande de la maison. Commande la plus répandue, puisque tout belge qui se respecte, veut construire sa maison, et qu’un architecte est légalement requis même pour l’érection d’une simple extension. Une démarche centrée sur l’utilisateur et fondée sur le ‘faire avec’.

Faire avec le contexte existant, avec un budget souvent maigre et surtout, avec le futur utilisateur.

Discuter, analyser la commande, la remettre en question, la définir, l’affiner, la concevoir, puis la réaliser avec une maîtrise de la mise en œuvre enseignée dans les universités belges, qui reste entre les mains de l’architecte jusqu’à la livraison de la construction. Cet accompagnement, à la fois de la commande et de son commanditaire, appris grâce à la petite échelle, a servi les architectes au moment de la mise en concurrence de la réalisation des ouvrages publics, rendue obligatoire en 1993 par les instances européennes. Une nouvelle commande s’ouvre alors, encadrée par des procédures balbutiantes. Elles ressemblent plus (et c’est encore le cas actuellement pour certaines d’entre elles) à la formulation d’une question assortie d’un budget (bas en général) qu’à celles d’un concours ‘normé’ tel que conçu en Suisse ou en France. Or, c’est bien là, dans cette absence de clarté de la commande

que s’immisce l’ingéniosité des architectes. C’est dans ce travail d’accompagnement de la commande que l’architecte prend possession du projet jusqu’à sa mise en œuvre. Cette démarche, partagée par plusieurs bureaux, engendre que l’architecture contemporaine en Belgique ne soit pas une question de ‘style’ ou le fruit de ‘stars architectes’, mais qu’elle soit une réponse précise, engagée et propre à chaque commande.

Le revers est cependant palpable et met à mal les bureaux d’architecture belges souvent de petites tailles. Ce travail en amont devient parfois trop important et n’est que rarement reconnu financièrement. Le ‘faire avec’ se transforme alors en ‘faire malgré’, également du fait de l’évolution du contexte de la construction ces quinze dernières années. ‘Faire’ cette architecture qui prend position et qui est gage de qualité ‘malgré’ le peu de budget, le trop de contraintes normatives, le manque de reconnaissance du statut d’architecte, la démultiplication des recours juridiques, etc.

Et pourtant, cette démarche et son résultat ont très vite été soutenus et valorisés. Cette ‘qualité architecturale et spatiale’ est devenue, un leitmotiv, et même un combat, depuis vingt-cinq ans, pour certaines personnalités du monde architectural belge. Elles ont profité de la mise en concurrence pour l’y introduire. Entendues par le politique, des structures publiques ont pu voir le jour pour assister la maîtrise d’ouvrage publique ou privée devant procéder à des marchés de service d’architecture.

Chaque région et chaque communauté se dotent de leur structure : le Vlaams Bouwmeester en Flandre (1999), la Cellule architecture en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (2007), le BouwmeesterMaître Architecte à Bruxelles-Capitale (2009).

WALLONIE - BRUXELLES

Certaines villes ont même souhaité établir ce type de structures à leur niveau, comme Anvers (1999), Charleroi (2013) et Gand (2017). Ces structures proposent des procédures fondées principalement sur des critères de qualité – tels que l’habitabilité, l’urbanité, l’approche technique, etc. –, plaçant le critère budgétaire en dernière position. Elles bannissent également les concours anonymes pour favoriser les procédures concurrentielles avec négociation. Le commanditaire a ainsi l’opportunité de choisir un projet et une équipe de projet.

De la même façon, des procédures pour activer la rénovation urbaine, basées sur la concertation, émergent. Elles misent sur cette démarche architecturale qui répond également aux défis actuels du réemploi de l’existant (structures, matériaux, etc.) inhérent au parc immobilier des villes belges où la rénovation est largement majoritaire et la logique du palimpseste incontournable. La procédure des Contrats de quartier durable apparaît ainsi dès 1994. Ces Contrats lient la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale à ses 19 communes pour lutter contre la multiplication des quartiers précaires et les délais administratifs trop longs de la construction. Un urbanisme d’acuponcture dont découle, parmi des centaines d’autres, le projet salué par le prix de l’architecte émergent Mies van der Rohe 2017 : les logements sociaux Navez Portaels des bureaux MSA et V+.

Ce prix, souligne Anna Ramos, Directrice de la Fondation, récompense « une démarche héroïque et ordinaire ». Une démarche dont peut se targuer l’ensemble des projets présentés dans cette exposition.

[FR] «La scène belge est gage de qualité, d’humanisme et de poésie» peut-on lire dans le numéro 425 de l’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, dévolu à l’architecture belge. Il est vrai que depuis une dizaine d’années, une qualité spatiale émane particulièrement de l’architecture en WallonieBruxelles. Elle est le fruit d’une alliance entre une démarche architecturale spécifique, axée sur le processus et la maîtrise de la construction, et une politique architecturale volontariste.

[EN] Located at one of Brussels main entrances, the building is a social housing operation and a flagship project for the new identity of that neighbourhood. The building provides a solid and comfortable basis for families in need and stands with an open angle, welcoming commuters entering the capital. It advocates for a strong desire for architecture for all.

This one-piece construction closes a steep triangular block, and develops a smooth textured brick facade playing with the light of the ever-changing Belgium sky. This scripture echoes with the surrounding, full of details, art Deco perennial buildings and stands up to the impressive road and railway infrastructure.

As most projects in Brussels, the building had to face a fascinating but difficult context. To face the small, irregular, noisy and mainly northern orientated plot, the building uses key architectural features. It develops long folded apartments around a southern opened courtyard and a complex staircase that intertwines with individual stairs, allowing internal volumetric movements and kilometrical views to the surrounding landscape. The plans articulations, intricate as lace-work, and the progressive sec4on, passing from splitlevel to inverted duplexes, provide all the apartments of this perennial construction with light from 4 orientations exposition, outdoor spaces, impressive views and numerous spatial experiences.

In 2017, MSA / V + received the Mies Award for the realisation of this building, g in the category Emerging Architect. This award reflects the fact that architecture can have a direct impact on the contemporary society, and that a simple social housing program building can mean more than simply producing housing or simply producing architecture.

[FR] L’immeuble, implanté à une des principales entrées de Bruxelles consiste en la réalisation d’une opération de logements sociaux. Outre son aspect programmatique (5 logements pour grandes familles), la réalisation de ce projet porte également sur la réalisation d’un immeuble disposant d’une certaine symbolique à l’échelle de la ville. L’immeuble répond en effet à deux besoins: d’une part fournir une offre résidentielle permettant d’accueillir des familles socialement en difficulté, d’autre part avec ses façades ouvertes il accueille les personnes arrivant depuis la périphérie à Bruxelles.

L’immeuble témoigne ainsi de la volonté de la maîtrise d’ouvrage de créer une architecture qui s’adresse au plus grand nombre.

A travers son implantation, l’immeuble permet de parachever l’îlot de forme triangulaire en développant une façade texturée en briques, qui joue avec la lumière changeante du ciel bruxellois. Cette écriture fait échos à de nombreux immeubles Art Déco situés dans le contexte immédiat, faisant face aux infrastructures des routes et du chemin de fer.

Comme c’est le cas dans beaucoup de projets à Bruxelles, l’immeuble se confronte à un contexte difficile mais fascinant.

Ainsi, l’immeuble résout la question paradoxale d’une façade urbaine orientée vers le Nord à travers une série d’éléments de composition architecturale. La façade principale se trouve en enfin orientée vers l’intérieur de l’îlot où le développé vers l’orientation Sud est la plus importante. Les appartements se déroulent autour d’une cage d’escalier orientée vers le Nord, et offrant de multiples vues vers l’environnement. Les plans sont composés à partir de demi-niveaux superposés, qui se convertissent en duplex inversés aux derniers étage.

Ce dispositif permet à chaque appartement de disposer des orientations et de l’ensoleillements le plus adéquats, de vues impressionnantes vers l’extérieur ainsi que d’un espace extérieur privatif sous forme de terrasse.

En 2017, MSA/V+ ont reçu le Mies Award pour la réalisation de cet immeuble dans la catégorie Emerging Architect. Ce prix témoigne ainsi du fait que l’architecture peut avoir un impact direct sur la société contemporaine, et qu’un simple immeuble de programme de logements sociaux peut signifier bien plus que simplement produire du logement ou simplement faire de l’architecture.

[EN] Dirty White Cube – Since a new building would not have contributed any significant added value, it was decided to keep all the existing buildings, with their deficiencies. Built over a period of sixty years, they were never meant to form a whole. The project then emerged as an ‘assisted readymade’: through strategic demolitions and the addition of a few elements, the ill-conceived, the ill-fitting exist­ing buildings are being rehabilitated.

The intention of V+ and Rotor is not to distinguish between old and new. The spaces are combined to cre­ate a rich array of spatial typologies, something which a new construction would never have been able to offer.

This idea is also applied in the clever finishings: the pal­ette of ‘whites’ helps give a sense of unity to the build­ing, almost giving the illusion of a full-scale model. At the same time, the use of different materials questions and complexifies the status of the white cube, since the different materials each have their own specific­ity. Realism, a certain didacticism, pragmatism and domesticity characterize this project.

Between the lines, a provocative reference to the norms of fashion and architecture.

[FR] Dirty White Cube – Partant du constat qu’une nouvelle construction n’améliorerait pas sensiblement la réponse au programme du concours, il fut décidé de garder l’ensemble des bâtiments existants et de s’appuyer sur toutes leurs incongruités d’un complexe de bâtiments construits successivement et sans cohérence sur une période de soixante ans. Le projet se profile alors comme un ‘readymade assisté’: Par des démolitions ciblées et l’ajout de quelques éléments architecturaux, les espaces irrationnels et peu perméables des bâtiments existants sont revalorisés.

L’intention de V+ et de Rotor n’est pas de distinguer clairement le nouveau de l’ancien. Ils se fondent plutôt dans un riche catalogue de spatialités différentes, qu’un projet entièrement nouveau ne saurait offrir.

La réflexion sur les finitions prolonge ce concept: la palette de “blancs” choisie contribue à conférer une unité à l’ensemble, lui donnant presque le statut de maquette à échelle réelle; d’autre part, elle complexifie le rapport au ‘white cube’, l’interrogeant par une grammaire de matériaux variés. Un projet empreint de réalisme, d’une certaine volonté didactique, de pragmatisme, de domesticité. Entre les lignes, une provocation sur les standards de l’architecture et de la mode.

[EN] The path to the cave already used by the Neanderthals, obviously appeared to us as to be the structuring axis of the site. We have, in the same spirit, decided to restore the natural relief of this valley.

[FR] Le chemin vers la grotte déjà emprunté par les néanderthaliens, nous est apparu comme devant être d’évidence l’axe structurant du site. Nous avons, dans le même esprit, décidé de restituer le relief naturel de cette vallée.

The “house” which sheltered the original small museum has been integrated into the new Conservatory volume, which develops parallel to the cave path. The lobby gives access to both old spaces and new functions. The desire for economy of ground leads us to superimpose the large room of temporary exhibitions in the center of conservation and studies.

The space created in this one is a real cut. The visitor can observe the operation of his operating chain through a glass sheet. The scenography uses augmented reality: this creates a tension between the presence of lithic and digital dematerialization. The architecture of the Conservatoire is deliberately a protective case. He assumes it in his expression. The “foyer” takes place at the edge of the site. Its overhangs create shelters favorable to the waiting groups in the North and distributes the various functions in the South. Its position allows to fully immerse the visitor in the world of the Prehistomuseum once it exceeded. A place is created, with its own identity that escapes the industrial valley

La “maison” qui abritait le petit musée originel a été intégrée dans le nouveau volume du Conservatoire, qui se développe parallèlement au chemin de la grotte. Le hall d’accueil distribue directement l’ancien musée et les nouvelles fonctions La volonté d’économie de terrain nous conduit à superposer la grande salle d’expositions temporaires au centre de conservation et d’études. L’espace créé dans celui-ci est une véritable coupe. Le visiteur peut observer le fonctionnement de sa chaine opératoire au travers d’une feuille de verre. La scénographie utilise la réalité augmentée : cela crée une tension entre la présence du lithique et la dématérialisation numérique. L’architecture du Conservatoire est volontairement un écrin protecteur. Il l’assume dans son expression.

This project reveals an attention to the constructive modes in order to minimize the gray energy and to favor the short cycles of consumption: the above-ground of the building of the Conservatory is realized in wood frame filled with straw, with a finish of the earth walls inside.

Le foyer prend place en bordure du site. Ses portes à faux créent des abris propices à l’attente des groupes au Nord et distribue les différentes fonctions au Sud. Sa position permet d’immerger totalement le visiteur dans l’univers du Préhistomuseum une fois celui-ci dépassé. Un lieu est créé, avec sa propre identité qui échappe à la vallée industrielle .

Ce projet révèle une attention aux modes constructifs afin de minimiser l’énergie grise et de favoriser les cycles courts de consommation : le hors-sol du bâtiment du Conservatoire est réalisé en ossature bois remplie de paille, avec une finition des murs en terre côté intérieur.

[EN] The project first and foremost takes advantage of the great potential of the existing public space. It aims at a delicate intervention with an extreme attention to details for the square to become again what it used to be: a large ground available for multiple uses, an open air common room.

The new space is paved with one and the same stone, from facades to facades. The sobriety and elegance of the proposition arises from the care to the path of water and its collecting.

The proposal offers benches that can be used in various ways: seats for passers-by, protection for trees, qualifying pedestrian and vehicles paths to protect “weak users”. Water features and vegetation completes this relaxing area. The idea of “shared space” is central and unifying to the proposal and can be defined as a “unified layout of public space that reduces the environmental impact of vehicle traffic, fostering pedestrians and cyclist, supporting stable activities, decluttering and embellishing places.”

The “Moment-Point-Zéro” of artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx – a monolith buried at the center of gravity of the “urban room” – obliterates and underlines this large stone carpet drawn with the eraser rather than with the pencil.

[FR] Le projet de réaménagement de la place communale et des rues du Prado et comte de Flandre tire avant tout partie du grand potentiel spatial de l’espace public existant et consiste en une intervention architecturale délicate et soucieuse du détail; qui permet à la place de redevenir un grand sol disponible à de multiples appropriations, une salle commune à ciel ouvert.

Le nouvel espace est pavé de pierre naturelle, de façade à façade. La sobriété et l’élégance du résultat tiennent en grande partie à l’attention soutenue portée au cheminement de l’eau et à sa reprise.

L’intervention intègre également des bancs dont les usages sont multiples : proposer des assises aux passants, protéger les arbres, nuancer les parcours empruntés par les piétons et par la circulation venant de la rue du Comte de Flandre et ainsi protéger les usagers faibles. Des jeux d’eau et de nouvelles plantations font de l’endroit une aire de détente agréable. La notion d’espace partagé, est centrale et fédératrice du projet ; “un aménagement unifié de l’espace public qui réduit l’incidence environnementale de la mobilité motorisée en favorisant les déplacements piétons et cyclistes, qui encourage les activités de séjour, qui désencombre et embellit les lieux et qui soutient la vitalité urbaine”.

Le Moment-Point-Zéro de l’artiste Joëlle Tuerlinckx – un monolithe enfoui au centre de gravité du « salon urbain » – oblitère et souligne ce grand tapis de pierre dessiné avec la gomme plutôt qu’avec le crayon.

[EN] Keramis is an art-center dedicated to contemporary ceramics. It houses museological, pedagogical and production activities, as well as artist residencies. It will be part of the rehabilitation of the former Royal Boch faience factory in La Louvière and organizes itself around the classified buildings, housing the three bottle kilns.

The museum inserts itself boldly in the city center, bolstering this new urban fragment located in the middle of a potential future shopping complex. Considering the whole plot, the volume hollows itself and spreads in order to create distinct links with its context (square, park, buildings).

The new concrete wings enveloping the classified building create a dialogue between materials and spaces, curves and angles, smooth and rough, light and shadow. The angles round up to create fluidity - the functions are settling. The building widens, to create an effect of porosity.

The museography uses a vocabulary borrowed from the factory, storage and domesticity and aims at associating the vision of objects with the memory of the site. All of the exhibition halls possess their own qualities. The scenography is generated by the architecture.

[FR] Keramis est un centre d’art, dédié à la céramique contemporaine qui abrite des activités muséales, pédagogiques, de production et de résidence d’artistes. Keramis s’insère dans un vaste mouvement de réhabilitation du site de l’ancienne faïencerie Royal Boch à La Louvière. Il s’appuie sur les bâtiments classés comprenant 3 grands fours bouteilles.

En centre-ville, le musée s’implante de manière franche pour faire exister ce nouveau fragment urbain au milieu d’un hypothétique futur complexe commercial. En considérant l’ensemble de la parcelle, le volume se creuse et s’étale pour venir assumer ses liens au contexte (place, parc, futurs bâtiments commerciaux).

Les nouvelles ailes en béton enveloppent le bâtiment classé, établissant un dialogue des matériaux et des espaces, entre l’arrondi et l’anguleux, le lisse et le rugueux, le sombre et le lumineux. Les angles s’arrondissent pour la fluidité, les fonctions prennent place. Le bâtiment s’évide pour créer une porosité avec le parc et la ville.

La muséographie utilise le vocabulaire de la fabrique, de l’entreposage et de la domesticité, de manière à associer la vision des objets à la mémoire du site. Les salles d’exposition ont toutes leurs qualités propres. La scénographie est induite par l’architecture.

[EN] This project wishes to revive the special qualities of the existing apartment listed in the Brussels architectural heritage register while offering a living space that suits the client’s ambition. The building was built in 1946 by Lucien de Vestel, architect of the Berlaymont, based on the principle of a concrete beams and columns structure. The original structure as well as a refined research in archival documents are the starting point of the project.

The first intervention was to demolish the walls of the entrance hall located in the heart of the appartment to integrate it to the living spaces by giving it a new function. Conceived as an integrated piece of furniture with sliding doors and a guillotine for the secretary desk, the new study opens on the living room. The original location of these spaces is subtly kept apparent by the different materiality given to ceilings and existing beams. For the desk, an oak veneer has been chosen in dialogue with the existing concrete slab of the entrance hall revealed by the early demolishings.

The second intervention was to open the walls separating the kitchen and the entrance hall in order to bring more light from the west inside the living spaces. A glazed door frame with a 180 degrees opening materializes the original articulation. In the main interior elevation of the living room, two niches are centred on a new chimney. A 40cm tablet adopts the curve of the façade and recreates the original cosy corner designed with a platform. The bathroom, toilet and kitchen are kept in the core of the appartment and the bedrooms towards the inner courtyard keeping their original location and proportions.

[FR] Ce projet consiste en la rénovation intérieure d’un appartement répertorié au patrimoine des monuments bruxellois. L’immeuble fut construit en 1946 par Lucien de Vestel, architecte du Berlaymont, sur le principe d’une structure poteaux-poutres en béton. La structure d’origine ainsi que les nombreux documents d’archives sont le point du départ du projet.

La première intervention est de démolir les murs de la salle d’attente existante située en second jour pour l’intégrer aux espaces de vie en lui donnant une nouvelle fonction. Aménagé avec un meuble intégré avec portes coulissantes et une guillotine pour “le secrétaire”, ce bureau s’ouvre sur le salon.

La destination originelle de ces espaces est soulignée par les différents traitements du plafond et les poutres existantes.

Pour le bureau est choisie une finition en placage de chêne et pour le hall le projet affirme le béton apparent de la dalle découverte lors des démolitions sur chantier.

La deuxième intervention est d’ouvrir les parois qui séparent la cuisine du hall afin de faire rentrer une lumière de l’ouest dans les espaces de vie. Un châssis avec une porte à 180° matérialise de façon légère et transparente l’articulation d’origine.

Dans l’élévation principale du salon les deux niches sont centrées sur une nouvelle cheminée. Une tablette de 40cm épouse l’arrondi de la façade et recrée le ‘cosy corner’ à l’origine prévu avec une estrade.

Les pièces d’eau, cuisine et wc, sont conservées au centre du projet et les chambres à l’arrière afin de garder leurs proportions et fonctionnement d’origine.

[EN] This is one of the “projet Phénix” carried by the city of Charleroi and financed by European and Walloon funds.

The project consists of the construction of an Urban Distribution Center (2000 m²), CDU in French, in which goods from intra-ring shops are deposited by haulers to be transported by light electric vehicles to stores.

The main problem related to the CDU is the collision between this dual scales in which it fits: that specific to infrastructure and that of the surrounding urban fabric. The site is quite stretched in length, surrounded by heavy infrastructures: metro, railway and the ring. If we look at them from a purely scenographic point of view, we can find them dramatically beautiful and develop an architecture that becomes their extension.

Formally, the project consists of two “aerial beams” that extend voluntarily to the ends of the adjacent island. An urban project that dances with all its infrastructures to appropriate the spaces generated by them. The beams offer a coherent vision from the ring: a strong line of 120m in length and 5m in height treating the entire site.

The project proposes a flexible approach and presents itself as a device dedicated to change. It pays special attention to its sustainability over time. For this, the Urban Distribution Center has been conceived (structurally) in several phases, which makes it possible to obtain a long-term evolving building according to needs and requests.

[FR] Il s’agit d’un des projets Phénix porté par la ville de Charleroi et financé par des fonds européens et wallons.

Le projet consiste en la réalisation d’un Centre de Distribution Urbaine (2000 m²) dans lequel les marchandises des commerces de l’intra-ring sont déposées par des véhicules poids lourds pour être ensuite acheminés par des véhicules électriques légers jusqu’aux magasins.

La problématique principale liée au CDU est la collision entre cette double échelle dans laquelle il s’inscrit : celle propre aux infrastructures et celle du tissu urbain traditionnel.

Le site assez étiré en longueur, est entouré d’infrastructures lourdes : métro, chemin de fer, ring. Si on les regarde d’un point de vue purement scénographique, on peut les trouver dramatiquement belles et développer une architecture qui devient alors leur prolongement.

Formellement, le projet se compose de deux « poutres aériennes » qui s’étendent de manière volontaire jusqu’aux extrémités de l’îlot adjacent. Un projet urbain qui danse avec toutes ses infrastructures pour s’approprier les espaces générés par ces dernières. Les poutres offrent une vision cohérente depuis le ring : une ligne forte de 120m de longueur et de 5m de hauteur traitant l’entièreté du site.

Le projet propose une démarche flexible et se présente comme un dispositif voué au changement. Il accorde une attention particulière à la durabilité dans le temps. Pour cela, le Centre de Distribution Urbaine a été imaginé (structurellement) en plusieurs phases, ce qui permet d’obtenir un bâtiment évolutif à long terme en fonction des besoins et des demandes.

[EN] The project concerns the renovation of a farm into equipment intended for public sensitization of agriculture in urban areas and more particularly in the Neerpede area, one of the last rural areas in the Brussels Region. The main idea is that of a new protected volume that takes place in the old farmhouse to reach the standard of low energy but without disturbing the appearance of the existing building.

[FR] Le projet porte sur la rénovation transformation d’une Ferme en équipement destiné à la sensibilisation du public à l’agriculture en milieu urbain et plus particulièrement à la zone de Neerpede, l’une des dernières zones rurale en Région Bruxelloise. Le nouveau bâtiment accueille une cuisine pédagogique, un espace de repas partagé, un espace polyvalent, un bureaux et les espaces techniques et sanitaires.

This new volume makes it possible to perfectly manage the envelope, its insulation, its airtightness and to avoid thermal bridges. The farm is now housing an educational kitchen, a shared dining area, a multi-purpose space, offices, technical and sanitary spaces.

La posture adoptée consiste à considérer les façades de la ferme comme un parement mis à disposition. A la manière d’un Bernard l’Hermite, la ferme, vidée de ses murs de refends intérieurs, accueille un nouveau corps étranger en son sein. Ce corps s’adapte peu ou prou à l’existant, tantôt s’en écarte, tantôt en jaillit. Ce nouveau volume permet de gérer parfaitement l’enveloppe, son isolation, son étanchéité à l’air et d’éviter les ponts thermiques. Cette démarche permet d’atteindre aisément le standard basse énergie.

AFFIRMING THE PUBLIC DIMENSION The project is intended to accommodate the public. This involves creating an architectural landmark, memorable both in its external approach and in the experience of its interior spaces, allowing its symbolic appropriation by users and future visitors. Incisions are made in the blind facades inviting passengers to take a look on the inside. These new window openings express the public character of the farm and give an understanding of the change in the use of the farm.

Located in the extension of an existing pedestrian pathway bordering the pond of Pede, they continue looking inward and provide views across the new path that connects the farm to the wild garden. In addition to bringing natural light, the new bays frame views of the landscape like so many paintings suspended in space. The rural landscape invites itself to the deepest part of the building.

Cela implique architecturalement de créer un lieu marquant, mémorable autant dans son approche extérieur que dans l’expérience de ses espaces intérieurs, permettant son appropriation symbolique par les utilisateurs et futurs visiteurs. Des incisions sont pratiquées dans les pignons aveugles invitant le badaud à la curiosité. Ces nouvelles baies affichent la dimensions publique de la ferme et donnent à comprendre son changement affectation. Situées dans le prolongement d’un cheminement piéton existant bordant, elles continuent le regard vers l’intérieur et ménagent des vues traversantes vers le nouveau chemin qui relie la ferme au jardin sauvage.

Le bâtiment se fait escale d’un parcours plus vaste. Depuis l’intérieur, les nouvelles baies, en plus d’apporter de la lumière naturelle, cadrent des vues sur le paysage comme autant de tableaux suspendus dans l’espace. Le paysage rural s’invite au plus profond du bâtiment.

Le plan s’articule autour de deux vides intérieurs qui organisent le plan, ce qui a pour effet de proposer un plan sans couloir. Ce dispositif permet de lier visuellement toutes les fonctions entre elles par un jeu des baies intérieures.

[EN] The building is located in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a multicultural and dense municipality situated in the north part of Brussels, Belgium.

[FR] Le bâtiment est situé à Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, une commune multiculturelle et dense située dans la partie nord de Bruxelles, en Belgique.

The assignment for the competition was to transform an industrial site into a local city-hall branch including a waiting room, 12 counters and administration offices. The existing building used to be part of a complex for the production of cigarettes, which has been largely demolished in the past decades. Nowadays only two volumes remain along the rue Charles Malis. Each volume has a specific concrete structure and spatial identity. However, they are linked together as a whole by the decorative front façade made out of ornamental bricks and blue stone.

La demande du concours consistait à transformer un site industriel en une antenne administrative locale comprenant une salle d’attente, 12 comptoirs et des bureaux d’administration. Le bâtiment existant faisait autrefois partie d’un large complexe de production de cigarettes, qui fut en grande partie démoli au cours des dernières décennies. Il reste aujourd’hui deux volumes le long de la rue Charles Malis. Chacun de ces deux volumes a une structure spécifique en béton et une identité spatiale qui lui est propre. Cependant, ils sont reliés ensemble par une façade avant décorative en briques ornementales et en pierre bleue.

The proposal takes advantage of the existing situation by inserting the program in a fluid and logical disposal into the structure, without degrading it. The shed shaped volume becomes logically the new public entrance, making its public function evident from the street, while the horizontal volume accommodates the counters and the offices on two levels.

To enhance the accessible nature of this public service, the waiting room is designed as the extension of the street; an in-between space which can be experienced as a part of the city. The counters are organized in a repetitive way, aligned with the concrete beams. They offer room and storage for an effective treatment of the citizen requests.

The offices, situated on the upper level, are linked with the counters by a large circulation area, designed for informal meeting with visual connections in order to create an efficient but yet convivial way of working.

Although the existing structure remained untouched, the façades and techniques of the building are greatly improved to achieve high energetic performance and great wellbeing for visitors and employees.

La proposition tire profit de la situation existante en insérant le programme dans une disposition fluide et logique dans la structure existante, sans l’altérer. Le volume en forme de halle devient la nouvelle entrée publique, rendant sa fonction publique évidente depuis la rue grâce à sa spatialité originale, tandis que le volume horizontal, plus rationnel, accueil les comptoirs et les bureaux sur deux niveaux.

Pour accentuer le caractère accessible de bâtiment, la salle d’attente est conçue comme l’extension de la rue, un espace intermédiaire expériencé comme la prolongation de la ville.

Les guichets sont organisés de manière répétitive, alignés avec les poutres en béton du plafonf. Ils offrent l’espace et le stockage suffisant pour un traitement efficace des demandes des visiteurs.

Les bureaux, situés à l’étage, sont reliés aux comptoirs par un grand espace de circulation, conçu comme espace de rencontres informelles et des connexions visuelles dans le but de créer une manière efficace et conviviale de travailler.

Cependant, même si la structure existante n’a pas été touchée, les façades et les techniques du bâtiment ont été grandement améliorées en vue d’atteindre des performances énergétiques élevées et d’offrir un bien-être pour les visiteurs et les employés.

The three pieces of furniture then structure and give function to the remaining space : a long kitchen cabinet in a narrow space between the entrance and the laundry room, a wall of storage near the entrance and a library in the more intimate space that leads to the balcony.

Ce sont ensuite les 3 éléments de mobilier qui fonctionnalisent les espaces : un long meuble de cuisine dans un espace étroit à proximité de l’entrée et de la buanderie, un mur de rangement à l’entrée sur le mur mitoyen et une bibliothèque dans l’espace le plus intime donnant sur la terrasse.

The materials are polyurethane screed for the floor; solid or perforated metal for the structuring elements, stratified MDF for the furniture, with a paint finish to exacerbate the texture of the various materials. The ceiling is kept as is to remind of the pre-existing unified volume.

Les matériaux sont la chape polyuréthane pour le sol, le métal plein ou perforé pour les volumes structurants , le mdf stratifié pour le mobilier et la peinture pour mettre en exergue la texture des différents matériaux. [EN] The building is located in a small alley in the city center. This is characterized by its narrowness and the typical art-deco architecture of some buildings on the south side of the street. The volumetry of the building was worked with a set of redans to create a rhythm in the facade harmonizing with the facades of the street, themselves quite worked with parts in excess of the plane of the facades. Like a ribbon, each level folds and is superimposed on a level whose folds are alternated. It is also a way of generating extra space to provide more comfortable living spaces in the dwellings.

In addition, the redans allowed to direct the views towards the street rather than to have a direct confrontation with the houses located on the other side of the street.

The building is designed to be built in wood frame and be very energy efficient. The living areas of the dwellings are largely open on the south side and the overhangs on the front side become well oriented terraces. A penthouse set back on the roof enjoys a breathtaking view of the city and a vegetated terrace. Given the very specific program, the project was worked out so that these micro-dwellings are very easily manageable in the long term from an energy point of view. To do this, it was necessary to aim for autonomy and to limit the common organs but at the same time drastically limit losses. The building is therefore very low energy. The low coefficient of heat loss of the carrier material (solid laminated wood) combined with a high performance external insulation make the envelope very effective.

[FR] Le bâtiment est situé dans une petite ruelle du centre ville. Celle-ci se caractérise par son étroitesse et par l’architecture typée art-déco de certains bâtiments côté sud de la rue. La volumétrie du bâtiment a été travaillée avec un jeu de redans permettant de créer un rythme dans la façade s’harmonisant avec les façades de la rue, elles-même assez travaillées avec des parties en débord par rapport au plan des façades. Comme un ruban, chaque niveau se plie et se superpose à un niveau dont les plis sont alternés. Il s’agit aussi d’une manière de générer des espaces supplémentaires afin d’offrir des pièces de vies plus confortables dans les logements. En outre, les redans permettaient d’orienter les vues vers la rue plutôt que d’avoir une confrontation directe avec les logements situés de l’autre côté de la rue.

L’immeuble est conçu pour être construit en ossature bois et être très économe en énergie. Les espaces de vie des logements sont largement ouverts du côté sud et les débords en façade deviennent des terrasses bien orientées. Un penthouse situé en retrait sur le toit jouit d’une vue imprennable sur la ville et d’une terrasse végétalisée. Etant donné le programme très spécifique, le projet a été travaillé de manière à ce que ces micro-logements soient très facilement gérables à long terme d’un point de vue énergétique. Pour ce faire, il fallait viser l’autonomie et limiter les organes communs mais en même temps limiter drastiquemnet les déperditions.

Le bâtiment est donc très basse énergie. Le faible coefficient de déperdition thermique du matériau porteur (bois massif contre-collé) associé à une isolation extérieure hautement performante rendent l’enveloppe très efficace.

[EN] On the site of a former garage, this contemporary building takes on the challenge of performing a transition between a 4-storey building and a corner plot with only the ground floor. The building follows the row of houses and then pivots to reveal a party wall clad exactly like the street facade The way the angle is processed gives a feel for the depth of the block behind. The terrace of the fourth floor of the street facade dematerialises the building, announces the empty space next door and subtly attenuates the height.

Through the hierarchy of its facade, its sobriety, its relatively low height and the care given to its materials, the project integrates both forcefully and gently into the street. The facades are covered with strips of natural stone with openwork wood cladding. The timber is laid in variable sections so as to to vibrate the surface and anticipate ageing. Texture deterioration is thus controlled.

The building has 4 residential units, all of which have quality outdoor spaces: terraces for the 2-bedrooms apartments, a garden for the lower duplex, a garden and a terrace for the upper duplex.

The units are adjustable to accommodate the needs of different users and usages. Large sliding doors integrated in the walls allow occupants to vary space as they see fit. Kitchens and bedrooms are partitioned or open to the living room (see diagrams).

[FR] À l’emplacement d’un ancien garage, un immeuble de contemporain fait le pari d’opérer une transition entre un bâtiment de quatre niveaux et une parcelle d’angle qui n’est bâtie qu’au rez-de-chaussée. L’immeuble prolonge l’alignement à rue puis, tel un pivot, se retourne, dévoilant un mitoyen paré des mêmes atours que la façade à rue, laissant, par cette gymnastique de l’angle, pressentir la profondeur de l’ilot. La terrasse du quatrième étage de la façade à rue dématérialise l’édifice, annonce la dent creuse voisine et atténue subtilement le gabarit.

Le projet, par la hiérarchie de sa façade, sa sobriété, sa hauteur relativement basse et le soin accordé à ses matériaux, s’insère à la fois en force et en douceur dans la rue. Les façades sont ponctuées de bandeaux en pierre naturelle et habillées avec un bardage de bois ajouré. Le bois est posé en section variable afin d’en faire vibrer sa surface et anticiper son vieillissement. La patine est ainsi maitrisée.

L’immeuble comprend 4 logements qui disposent tous d’espaces extérieurs de qualité : des terrasses pour les 2 chambres, un jardin pour le duplex inférieur, un jardin et une terrasse pour le duplex supérieur.

Les logements sont modulables afin de pouvoir s’adapter à des publics différents mais aussi aux différents usages des habitants. De larges portes coulissantes intégrées dans les murs permettent aux habitants de faire varier les espaces suivants leurs humeurs. Cuisines et chambres cloisonnées ou ouvertes sur le séjour.

Le bâtiment est un immeuble basse énergie construit dans des matériaux respectueux de l’environnement.

[EN] Preserving the qualities of it’s original construction, as the space and light, the building is now hosting a sports hall, an after-school homework program and up to that, three moderate-rent apartments.

[FR] La commune souhaite transformer cet ancien atelier de montage de pneus, occupé de façon informelle, en hall multi-sport et en école de devoirs, tout en ajoutant 2 logements au-dessus de l’ancienne conciergerie à rue.

This mixed development meets the requirements set out in the “neighborhood agreement” urban-regeneration project for the Métal-Monnaie district of Brussels. We decided to preserve as much as possible the powerful modernist architectural structure. The two apartments are conceived as a totally independent structure hanging over the roof. As the existing apartment are already conceived as a bridge-structure, the new ensemble induces a horizontal stratification of heterogeneous parts contrasting strongly with the surrounding houses.

L’architecture du complexe existant se caractérise par un modernisme de qualité, dont le projet actuel respecte le parti. La structure est conservée au maximum. Les logements ajoutés en toiture sont donc conçus comme une structure totalement indépendante, sur la largeur de la parcelle, n’interférant en aucune manière avec le bâtiment existant et renforçant de ce fait l’effet d’enjambement de ce dernier.

Le nouvel ensemble se présente comme une accumulation de larges couches horizontales en fort contraste avec la verticalité des maisons mitoyennes dans la rue. Ce contraste permet d’identifier clairement le bâtiment comme un équipement public.

In order to reinforce this contrast, and also to match sharp financial criteria, facade cladding of the new apartments is realized in transparent polycarbonate, that is also used in the large glass roofs and façades.

The project focuses on structure and skin topics: archeological preservation, transformation, and resonance of new structural elements with the older ones. These structural strategies are all ruled by the understanding of the structural behavior, instead of the structural design. In consequence, a coherent diversity is made possible in appearances and materialities. The project was nominated for the Belgian Award for Architecture and Energy in 2012 and received a sustainability award at Bisbeurs in Ghent in 2011. It was presented in numerous publications and exhibitions.

Afin de distinguer l’extension en toiture par respect pour la structure existante, et de renforcer l’identité du bâtiment, ainsi que pour répondre à de sévères critères économiques, le choix du matériau de façade pour l’extension en toiture se porte sur le polycarbonate, autant en bardage qu’en vitrage.

Le polycarbonate est également mis en œuvre pour la rénovation des très importantes verrières.

Les généreux espaces du garage accueillent sans difficultés les nouveaux programmes éducatifs et sportifs. La question principale porte sur l’organisation des accès des différents programmes, qui sont clairement identifiés et séparés par fonction. Puisque l’école de devoirs est située à l’étage et en retrait, il est décidé d’inverser cette ‘absence’ à rue et d’en faire le point fort de la façade. L’escalier est conçu comme un entonnoir sculptural traversant la façade vitrée, ce qui scinde celle-ci en trois partie distinctes.

[EN] In the final years of the 19th century, the vast plot of la Fraineuse was bought by a wealthy family of Verviers’ industrial businessmen, in order to build the Château de la Fraineuse. Later, in 1947, the city of Spa acquires the domain with the ambition to create a leisure centre. Following the open course of history, in 2016 the site of La Fraineuse benefits from infrastructural renovations in its mains buildings as well as a new extension.

This new castel addition ties its roots to one of the landscape’s fundamental qualities: the presence of an important topography which allows to physically inscribe the building into the territory. Developed as a single-storey building, the structure aims to assume both a limited presence and a strong coherent identity as part of the existing site. Either through the volumetric relationships established with its surroundings, or the multiplicity of ways and accesses it proposes, its design follows a logic that, being intimately attentive to its context, aims to be more complex than that of a single object. The heterogeneous character of both programme and users -a place where children, teachers, high performance athletes and admistrative personnel coexist on a daily basis- favour a great porosity between the interior and the exterior, unified by a central courtyard capable of illuminating every room and acting as a meeting point for the whole site.

The building respects the criteria of energetical economy imposed by the current PEB in the region of Wallonie, adopting -for the first time in Belgium- a building technic which consists in the construction of massive insulating concrete walls composed by foamed glass aggregates.

[FR] À la fin du 19ème siècle, le site de la Fraineuse est racheté par une famille de riches industriels verviétois qui y firent édifier le Château de la Fraineuse. En 1947, la ville de Spa acquiert le domaine avec le projet d’y créer un grand centre de loisirs et, suivant le cours ouvert de l’histoire, le site de La Fraineuse bénéficie aujourd’hui d’infrastructures rénovées.

Ce dernier projet prend appui sur l’une des qualités paysagères fondamentales du site : la présence d’une topographie importante qui permet d’inscrire physiquement l’édifice au territoire. Bien plus qu’un édifice, le bâtiment suit en en effet une logique de conception intimement liée au paysage qui l’accueil tant dans son rapport volumétrique que dans la diversité des accès qu’il propose. Le développement du projet sur un seul et même niveau confère au bâtiment une présence limitée sur le site mais lui assure néanmoins une forte identité. Le caractère hétérogène du programme et des usagers – où enfants, sportifs de haut niveau, personnel éducatif et gestionnaire du site se côtoient quotidiennement – donne lieu à une mise en place du programme très particulière favorisant une très grande porosité entre intérieur et extérieur. La cour extérieure centrale organise le programme fonctionnel et constitue un espace de rassemblement supplémentaire à l’échelle du site. Cette grande fenêtre de ciel offre un éclairage naturel à l’ensemble des espaces.

L’édifice respecte l’ensemble des critères en matière d’économie d’énergie fixés par la PEB actuelle en Région Wallonne. A cet égard, le bâtiment adopte une technique de construction unique en Belgique où les murs (intérieurs/extérieurs) sont réalisés en béton monolithique isolant.

[EN] In Herstal, an old city block made of hangars and abandoned houses left place to a set of city spaces such as a new train station, housing and shopping facilities articulated around a new public square.

Intentions: -Create a sequence of public spaces that are connected to each other by dealing with the declivity.

-Position the station on the city side. The new station is orientated towards the heart of the city, acting as a connector for the different districts around.

-Connect the landscape with the city. The sequence of public spaces that is defined connects the hidden landscape in the background (green hillsides) with the valley (the city and its urban fabric).

-Bring a new mixity of urban activities to activate the new pole.

-Create open spaces as a support for urban life. The project creates a new frame for the public spaces containing a new public square in a part of the city which lacks of that.

-Build a sustainable, compact and low energy building.

The materiality has been thought as a structuring element of the project. The station is built in red self-compacting exposed concrete. The lateral sides of the building have a raw texture left by the timber formwork. This character is bond to the inherent identity of the project, a building made out of a sloping ground.

As a conclusion, the projects aims to be both modest and very ambitious at the same time to its surroundings and set a new frame for public spaces in order to support new urban life.

[FR] Le projet consiste en un masterplan, la construction d’une gare et d’une chaîne d’espaces publics.

Le site est un quartier à requalifier, coupé par une ligne de chemin de fer, ayant pour conséquence de déconnecter la gare de la ville.

L’enjeu est de tisser les quartiers via la construction d’une infrastructure urbaine, génératrice d’un espace public sur plusieurs niveaux.

Le projet est basé sur quatre intentions fortes: - Considérer l’édifice comme un élément d’articulation urbaine. Un bâtiment-place créant un niveau d’espace public intermédiaire, un belvédère sur la ville.

- Reconsidérer le programme d’une petite gare au vu des enjeux actuels, et s’en saisir comme élément générateur d’une armature d’espace public.

- Adresser la nouvelle gare à la ville dense.

-Amener le paysage arrière des coteaux dans la ville pour construire une séquence d’espaces publics.

De par la position de la gare, la matérialité devient un élément structurant du projet. Elle est construite en béton apparent teinté dans la masse, en rouge, brut. Ce caractère répond à la nature première de l’édifice. Il agit comme élément d’articulation paysager.

L’ambition du projet est de repenser une chaîne d’espaces publics. L’outil de cette requalification passe par la réactivation d’un paysage oublié et l’activation de nouveaux usages qui accompagnent celui de la gare, coeur d’une nouvelle dynamique urbaine.

[EN] The Saint Martin primary school sits in a key position close to the church of Assesse, a village of the Condroz region in the french-speaking part of Belgium. Located at the top of the site, facing south, the school benefits of an incredible view all over the countryside. The garden and playgrounds, lying in the 5-meter slope at the back, offer interesting extension perspectives.

[FR] L’école de Saint Martin occupe une position clé à proximité de l’église d’Assesse. Implantée en point haut du site, orientée au sud en façade arrière, elle bénéficie d’une vue exceptionnelle sur toute la campagne. Le jardin et les cours de récréation, en dénivelé sur 5 mètres, offrent quant à eux une caractéristique particulièrement intéressante dans la perspective d’une extension.

The extension comes on top of the existing building and along the back façade. They reorganize the circulation, creating a new welcome-space, new classrooms and some new multipurpose rooms.

Envisagées en toiture et en façade arrière, les extensions proposent une nouvelle organisation des circulations favorisant un espace d’accueil de qualité, de nouvelles classes et quelques locaux polyvalents.

Maximizing the available space on the groundfloor, the project extends horizontally like a “plateau” on stilts, open towards the landscape. The garden level is then free of any building and serves as a shelter under the extension.

Maximisant les surfaces disponibles au rez-de-chausée, le projet s’étend horizontalement tel un plateau sur pilotis ouvert sur le paysage. Il propose de libérer le sol du jardin utilisant ce dernier comme préau abrité sous l’extension.

In the middle of this new place, a patio shows the location of the entrance. It allows the light to flow into the various spaces all around, while creating a quiet, peaceful, place in the heart of the school.

Au cœur de ce nouveau lieu, le patio signale l’entrée et permet de maximiser la lumière dans les différents locaux tout en créant un endroit partagé et calme au cœur de l’école.

The new building enlarges, reassembles, redefines empty spaces, opens throughout the landscape, and connects to the former buildings without destructing them. It becomes a versatile tool for new pedagogy.

For funding reasons, the construction happens in two times.

The first part, focused on the reorganization of the exiting building is already completed. The second part will be the construction of the horizontal “plateau” mentioned above.

Le nouveau bâtiment agrandit, rassemble, requalifie les espaces vides, s’ouvre sur le paysage et permet des connexions à l’existant sans déstructuration de celui-ci. Il devient outil polyvalent au service de la pédagogie.

Pour des raisons de financement, le chantier se déroule en deux phases. La première se concentrant sur la réorganisation du bâtiment existant est d’ores et déjà terminée. La seconde phase concernera la construction du plateau évoqué plus haut.

[EN] Les Ateliers Claus is an independent cultural platform for visual art and music based in Brussels. Over the years, Les Ateliers have offered space and time for recognized and upcoming artists to create work in an international environment.

The project, a mix between new construction and renovation, consists in creating a new cultural equipment mainly dedicated to music, on two plots and buildings located in a dense urban context. The programme (two music venues, a bar with atrium, a lodge for artists, three housing units and a music studio) is spread all over the six levels in a joyous complexity, inherent to the implantation of the two plots.

The existing building was and remains the “public” building, while the new building is complementary, “at its service”, clearly distancing itself and affirming its own identity. This complicity between both buildings allows us to integrate the architecture and the programme in the neighbourhood and the rhythm of existing surrounding façades.

Once inside the buildings, the boundaries between one and the other are constantly fuzzy and misleading. The concert hall and recording studio upstairs work as a “box in the box” and offer verified acoustic qualities. The project also presents some challenges in terms of stability and techniques.

[FR] Les Ateliers Claus, plate-forme culturelle indépendante pour l’art visuel et la musique est une structure de création et de résidence basée à Bruxelles, travaillant depuis des années avec des artistes reconnus et à venir.

Le projet, qui mêle construction neuve et rénovation lourde, consistait à créer, sur deux terrains et bâtiments connexes, dans un contexte urbain dense, un équipement culturel principalement dédié à la musique, mais pas que. Le programme (2 salles de spectacle, un bar avec atrium, une loge pour artistes, 3 logements et un studio d’enregistrement) est réparti sur 6 niveaux et le tout est imbriqué l’un dans l’autre, dans une joyeuse complexité, inhérente à l’implantation des deux parcelles.

Le bâtiment existant à rénover était et reste actuellement le bâtiment « public », tandis que le nouveau bâtiment voisin lui est complémentaire, « à son service », tout en se prenant clairement ses distances et affirmant sa propre identité.

Cette complicité entre façades permet au tout de se fondre dans le rythme des façades existantes de la rue et s’intégrer, comme architecture, et comme programme, dans le quartier.

Une fois à l’intérieur des bâtiments, les limites entre l’un et l’autre sont constamment flouées et trompeuses. La salle de concert et studio d’enregistrement à l’étage est une « boîte dans la boîte » et offre des qualités acoustiques vérifiées. Le projet présente également quelques prouesses en termes de stabilité et de techniques.

[EN] The Villers-La-ville abbey site is crossed and split by the N275 national road so it looses logic and unity.

Architecture, through a common intervention in landscape and scenography fields,try to reunite the full cistercian composition plan.

The project leads to a truly sequence from the parking to the ruins and prepares the visitors.

The new path goes by the mill (reception hall, scenographic spaces, models room), reaches the hill across the new footbridge, continues through the garden, crosses the second bridge over the national road and finally goes down into the ruins. The project highlights a common thread by means of sober materials (corten, wood, concrete) set up in various ways.

[FR] Le site de l’abbaye de Villers-la-Ville est traversé par une route nationale qui le divise et lui ôte toute cohérence et unité.

Architecture, paysage et scénographie tentent de rétablir,par une intervention commune, l’équilibre subtil qui régit l’ensemble de la composition cistercienne.

Le projet crée une véritable séquence d’entrée depuis les parkings jusqu’au site des ruines et une mise en condition du visiteur.

Le nouveau circuit passe par le moulin(espaces d’accueil, scénographie, maquettes), se poursuit dans la colline via une nouvelle passerelle, traverse le jardin, passe au-dessus de la nationale via une deuxième passerellepour ensuite aboutir dans les ruines. Le projet met en place un fil rouge à travers l’utilisation d’une palette sobre de matériaux (Corten, bois, béton) en déclinaisons diverses.

[EN] A229’s project plays with the extension to alter the organization of the complex. The proposed option is simple and responds to the existing structures. The main building ends with a blind gable, a new volume extends it and aligns it with the street, providing clear frontage facing the park and marking the entrance to the site.

[FR] Le projet d’A229 profite de l’extension pour réorganiser le complexe. L’option proposée, rationaliste, répond aux structures existantes. Le bâtiment principal se termine sur un pignon aveugle, le nouveau volume s’étend et s’aligne avec la rue, offrant une façade face au parc et marquant l’entrée du site.

The design of the façades and the materials of the new construction help subdue the stylistic differences of the adjacent buildings. Like Lego, rectangular surfaces in wood and polycarbonate make the building appear like a juxtaposition of distinct boxes, their chromatic pallet harmonizing with the original construction. Mysterious, the only signs of the structure’s function are the openwork stairs at the front and the glazed cut outs in the translucent partitions.

La conception des façades et les matériaux de la nouvelle construction aident à atténuer les différences stylistiques des bâtiments adjacents. Comme un lego, les surfaces rectangulaires en bois et en polycarbonate font apparaître le bâtiment comme une juxtaposition de volumes distincts, leurs palettes chromatiques s’harmonisant avec la construction d’origine. Mystérieux, les seuls signes de la fonction de la structure sont les escaliers ajourés, à l’avant, et les découpes vitrées dans les cloisons translucides.

Constructively, the building uses techniques and materials appropriated from industrial architecture. The use of concrete brut, cement screed and polycarbonate keep the constructions costs down to a minimum and give character to the work. The externalization of the exterior traffic maximizes the available 89 area and reduces maintenance costs.

The work also minimizes energy consumption by the use of high-performance polycarbonate, cladding from local timber, insulation and use of a heating system based on heat pumps and geothermal probes, achieving an energy rating of 20.

Constructivement, le bâtiment utilise des techniques et des matériaux appropriés issus de l’architecture industrielle.

L’utilisation du béton brut, de la chape de ciment et du polycarbonate réduit au maximum les coûts de construction et donne du caractère à l’ouvrage. L’externalisation de la circulation extérieure maximise la zone disponible et réduit les coûts d’entretien. Le travail minimise également la consommation d’énergie grâce à l’utilisation de polycarbonate haute performance, de revêtement de bois local, d’isolation et d’utilisation d’un système de chauffage basé sur des pompes à chaleur et des sondes géothermiques, atteignant une cote énergétique de 20.

La concentration des populations dans les villes et la désuétude des écoles, souvent construites dans les années soixante, nous obligent à repenser la fonction des écoles en fonction de l’évolution de l’éducation et de la société.

[EN] The project for a Special Needs School in Brain l’Alleud was conceived at the scale of the existing campus as to benefit in full from its existing facilities and infrastructure.

In this way the two-floor building embeds itself in the embankment of the terrain and grants access to wheelchair users on both levels. The opposite southeast and northwest facades each host an entrance, but on a different level. A transversal circulation axis connects both acces points and organises the composition of the plan. The gym, a two-floor high space next to it, is open towards the corridors and establishes visual relationships in the common spaces on each floor. Furthermore, this configuration ensures the diffuse propagation of zenithal light in corridors and classrooms.

The strict perpendicularity of the plan was disturbed by two oblique lines. One creating a covering area in the playground, while the other enlarges the first floor’s corridor to provide access to the classrooms.

[FR] L’École d’Enseignement Spécialisé de la Communauté Française a été pensée à l’échelle du “campus” dans lequel elle s’implante, de façon à profiter au maximum des infrastructures existantes du site de l’Athénée Royal Riva Bella à Braine l’Alleud.

Afin de garantir un aménagement à moindre coût des abords qui lui sont spécifiques (stationnement des bus, sécurité des usagers,...), son implantation définit une zone qui lui est propre dans le «talon » du campus. Développé sur deux niveaux, Le bâtiment profite également de la déclivité du terrain pour organiser ses accès. Les façades opposées, sud-est et nordouest, accueillent chacune une entrée mais à des niveaux différents. Un axe de circulation traversant les relie et organise dès lors le plan et la coupe. Le gymnase, seul espace qui se déploie en double hauteur, s’adosse à l’axe traversant et renforce cette articulation en fédérant les différents espaces du bâtiments. Il offre par ailleurs un apport de lumière naturelle au centre du bâtiment, éclairant tant les espaces de circulation que les fonds des classes en second jour.

Deux obliques perturbent l’orthogonalité du plan. L’une dévie la façade nord-ouest de sa trajectoire, au rez-dechaussée seulement, ce afin de dégager un espace couvert dans la cour. L’autre dilate l’axe traversant du premier étage pour contourner l’escalier et desservir les classes.

[EN] The current edition of the CCP makes a timely vindication of the transformative potential of architecture and its ability to activate specific urban situations. It is encouraging that the public administration rely fully on the capabilities of architecture, that architects undertake unconditional commitments towards the development of their profession, and that citizens collectively participate in the design and management processes of urban facilities.

It is also important to observe that the professional commitment underlying the twenty selected projects goes beyond their careful contextualization, the consensual resolution of the program, technical and constructive innovation, awareness in the application of environmental criteria, and the creation quality spaces. It extends towards the field of the common, recovered from the roots of society and placed between the public and private spheres; the scope of the common has a activist, permeable, and collective nature, and understands that “that architecture is a tool to collectively manage objectification processes”1 In this sense, the projects here emphasize their vocation as service by presenting themselves as a support for the activity they host and by being intentionally left somehow ‘unfinished’, without impositions, promoting changes by others and therefore the appropriation of architecture.

This edition includes a number of projects that fragment or incorporate an existing building, usually located in a context with a significant

historical background. In these cases, the projects show considerable sensitivity when it comes to valuing the pre-existent context and great clarity when integrating new architectures. It is clear that the teams have handled architectural memory carefully, in some cases ‘the passing of time’ has even been used as a coating of sorts. On the other hand, there are also projects without place, or projects located in “no places”2, especially those in the orbit of the Plaça de les Glòries in Barcelona, “a square that has never been a square”.3 The way these projects are designed has an abstract quality that allows them to deal with the uncertainty of the void and become self-referent thanks to the volume balance, the management of façade veiling, the creation of domestic passages, or the location of terraces that recover an open relationship with the city.

Another aspect that stands out is the recurrent use of wood as the defining material quality of many of the buildings. The (raw) wood symbolizes the new (in fact old) sustainability and, in some way, the will to consider the (friendly) environment of the common, and acts as a catalyst for everyday collective life.

Besides the diversity and common ground of the projects’ starting points, there are other interesting convergences, such as the attention given to the potential of the roof. This element adopts different forms, among which stand out a privileged viewpoint, an urban shelter, a skylight, or a green space. In this sense, it is assumed that the presence of the greenery that forms part of the roof or the façade has been planned from the project’s inception. This fact, common to different proposals, makes it clear that the ‘new green’ is a productive (active) and ‘structural’ green, and that it responds to environmental criteria. This ‘new green’ represents a step beyond the romantic, decorative green characteristic, along with integrated turrets,

És rellevant comprovar també, que el compromís disciplinar latent en els vint projectes seleccionats vagi més enllà de la contextualització acurada, la resolució consensuada del programa, la innovació tècnica i constructiva, la consciència en l’aplicació dels criteris mediambientals, o la creació d’espais de qualitat. El compromís disciplinar s’estén per atendre l’àmbit del comú; reivindicat des de les arrels de la societat i situat entre l’àmbit públic i el privat; l’àmbit del comú presenta una naturalesa reivindicativa, permeable i col·lectiva; i entén que «l’arquitectura és una eina per a gestionar col·lectivament els processos d’objectivació»1.En aquest sentit, els projectes d’aquesta connexió subratllen la vocació de servei al presentar-se com a suport de l’activitat que allotgen, i al materialitzarse volgudament d’una forma «inacabada», no impositiva, promovent l’alteració aliena i per tan, l’apropiació de l’arquitectura.

Aquesta mostra recull uns quants projectes que parteixen o incorporen, una edificació preexistent, habitualment localitzada en un context amb un

bagatge històric rellevant. En aquests casos, els projectes mostren una gran sensibilitat a l’hora de posar en valor la preexistència i una gran fermesa quan integren noves arquitectures. Traspua la cura amb la que els equips han gestionat la memòria arquitectònica, fins a l’extrem de proposar en algun cas, «el pas del temps» com a material de revestiment.

Per altra banda, també es mostren projectes sense lloc, o projectes situats en «no llocs»2 especialment els emplaçats en l’òrbita de la plaça de les Glòries a Barcelona, «una plaça que mai ha estat una plaça»3.

Aquests projectes presenten en la seva definició, una condició abstracta que els permet dialogar amb la incertesa del buit i esdevenir autoreferència gràcies al balanç volumètric, la gestió de filtres en façana, la creació de passatges domèstics, o bé la ubicació de terrasses que recuperen una relació oberta amb la ciutat.

amb torretes integrades, l’arquitectura catalana de les dècades de 1960 i 1970. Per altra banda, destaca l’ús recurrent de la fusta a l’hora de definir la materialitat de molts dels edificis. La fusta (crua) simbolitza la nova (en realitat vella) sostenibilitat i en certa manera, la voluntat d’atendre l’àmbit (amable) del comú, actuant així com a catalitzador de la quotidianitat col·lectiva.

Al marge de la diversitat i de les coincidències en els punts de partida projectuals, es detecten altres confluències interessants com per exemple, l’atenció especial al potencial de la coberta. Aquesta, adopta formes diverses entre les que destacaríem un mirador privilegiat, un aixopluc urbà, un captador lumínic, o un espai reservat al verd. En aquest sentit, s’endevina que la presència de la vegetació que forma part de la coberta o de la façana, s’ha previst des de l’inici del projecte. Aquest fet comú a diferents propostes, fa palès que el verd de «nova planta», és un verd productiu (actiu) i «estructural», i que respon a criteris mediambientals. Aquest «verd nou», suposa un pas més enllà respecte aquell verd romàntic i decoratiu que va qualificar

L’arquitectura d’aquesta connexió es concep sovint, al marge d’arquetips prefixats, i s’endinsa en recerques personals compromeses i generoses que desenvolupen formats avançats per donar lloc a un carrer-plaça, un carrer interior, un edifici mitgera, una escola gelosia, o un punt d’informació en obres, formalitzacions sorprenents i esperançadores d’una arquitectura activa.

[EN] To transform an old cavalry stable into a kindergarden school.

[CAT] Transformar unes antigues cavallerisses de l’exèrcit en una escola bressol.

The unusual and most characteristic elements of the existing building are a sequence of parallel walls every two meters that work as diaphragms, transversally to the building main axe.

L’element més insòlit i característic de l’edifici existent són uns murs paral.lels transversals cada dos metres que funcionen com a diafragmes.

The project idea consist on cutting these walls at 2.2m high preserving the walls rhythm as a succession of white screens that diffuse the light from the skylights. The classrooms are disposed under this repetitive structure, while the common area, concentrated on the building core, forms a cross plan space of high formal value which is completed by the entrance body.

This added element extends beyond the existing building and organizes the playground. New and old blend and allow the building to show its interior life together with the pass of time. The new layers of transformations overlap to the old ones.

El projecte proposa tallar els murs a 2.20m i mantenir-los com una successió de pantalles blanques que difuminen la llum natural dels lluernaris. Sota aquesta estructura repetitiva i ordenada es situen les aules, mentre que l’espai col.lectiu es concentra en un espai de gran potència formal que construeix una creu que es completa amb un nou cos d’accés que sobresurt del perímetre edificat de l’edifici i organitza el pati.

El nou es barrejarà amb el vell, deixant que el mateix edifici expliqui la seva vida anterior mostrant les marques del temps, sobreposant les noves actuacions com una capa més que es fusionarà amb les anteriors.

[EN] The project occupies the former workers cooperative “Pau i Justícia”, deeply rooted in the memory of the neighbourhood Poblenou, a space where long ago neighbours had celebrated marriages, first communions and parties, which was abandoned for many years. Now its doors open again and these neighbours recognize the spaces in their memories at the same time that the building has been adapted to the new program: a theatre and a dramaturgy school, a place to celebrate the theatrical creation.

The design process has been done with the utmost respect towards the former workers cooperative, studying the existing spaces and decoration and relaying on them to create the atmosphere of the new drama centre. A large foyer connects all the levels through a series of successive openings, exposing completely the building to a promenade of interior sights, in a way that everyone entering is attracted to look up or around, see people and say hello. Thus, the foyer becomes somehow a domestic place, where relations and exchanges can happen unexpectedly, surprisingly in its many turns, corners and benches... The real theatrical activity is not just happening at the spaces for theatre exhibition, but expanded to the building as a whole.

[CAT] El projecte ocupa l’antiga cooperativa obrera “Pau i Justícia”, molt arrelada a la memòria del barri del Poblenou, un espai on els veïns havien celebrat bodes, primeres comunions i festes, i que havia estat abandonat durant molts anys. Ara es tornen a obrir les portes i aquests veïns poden reconèixer els espais de la seva memòria, al mateix temps que l’edifici s’ha adaptat a una nova ocupació: un teatre i escola de dramatúrgia, un lloc per celebrar la creació teatral.

El procés de disseny s’ha realitzat amb el màxim respecte a l’antiga cooperativa obrera, estudiant els espais i la decoració existents, comptant amb ells per crear l’ambient del nou centre dramàtic. Un gran atri d’entrada connecta tots els nivells a través d’una sèrie de successives obertures, exposant completament l’edifici a un passeig de vistes interiors, de manera que tothom que entra sigui atret a mirar cap amunt o al voltant, veure gent i saludar. D’aquesta manera, el vestíbul es converteix d’alguna manera en un lloc domèstic, on les relacions i els intercanvis poden ocórrer inesperadament, sorprenentment, en els seus nombrosos girs, cantonades i bancs... La veritable activitat teatral no només es dona als espais d’exhibició teatral, sinó que s’expandeix per tot l’edifici.

[EN] Vil·la Urània is a small residence of the late nineteenth century that was home to the renowned astronomer Josep Comas i Solà, in the district of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi in Barcelona. The densification of the neighborhood left the building and the small surrounding garden encased between two large dividing walls. The new complex of facilities assumes the challenge of giving a new life to the existing building and gardens by incorporating them into a new building with low environmental impact and reduced energy consumption.

Villa’s pre-existence sets the ground level and the first floor of the whole complex. A dual access communicates the plot streets. An adapted ramp path and an external staircase resolves the vertical communications. The lightness of outdoor staircase increases the ventilation and resolves a soft connection with the neighbors that look over the building. The villa becomes the hub of the complex.

The extension is conceived as a tall and narrow building, oriented to southeast with a large gallery, a semi-detached greenhouse, a passive system to warm and refresh the meeting areas and informal activities as well as the circulation of the building. This intermediate space works as a winter greenhouse and as a shaded house in summer, and acts as a thermal mattress by separating the heated areas from the outside, reducing the energy demand of the building. The facade adapts automatically to outdoor conditions by a centralized control system.

The building has been designed as a Nearly zero-energy building (nZEB) and has achieved a LEED Platinum certification.

[CAT] La Vil·la Urània és una petita residència de finals dels segle XIX que va ser la llar del reconegut astrònom Josep Comas i Solà al districte de Sarrià-Sant Gervasi a Barcelona.

La densificació del barri va deixar l’edifici i el petit jardí circumdant encaixonat entre dues imponents mitgeres. El nou complex d’equipaments assumeix el repte de donar una nova vida a l’edifici existent i al seu jardí incorporant-lo a un edifici nou, de baix impacte ambiental i un consum energètic molt reduït.

La forta preexistència de la vil·la estableix el nivell de la planta baixa i la planta primera. Un doble accés a la parcel·la permet connectar els dos carrers adjacents. Una rampa i una escala exterior resolen les comunicacions verticals. La lleugeresa de l’escala exterior incrementa la ventilació i dóna transparència a les finques veïnes preexistents que donen façana a la parcel·la. La vil·la esdevé el centre neuràlgic del centre cívic.

L’ampliació, un edifici alt i estret orientat a sud-est amb una gran galeria, climatitza de forma passiva les zones de trobada i d’activitats informals així com les circulacions de l’edifici. Aquest espai intermedi funciona com un hivernacle a l’hivern i com un umbracle a l’estiu. Actua com a coixí tèrmic, separa les zones climatitzades de l’exterior, i redueix la demanda energètica de l’edifici. La façana s’adapta de forma automàtica a les condicions exteriors mitjançant sensors i un sistema centralitzat de control.

L’edifici ha estat dissenyat sota paràmetres de consum energètic gairebé nul (nZEB) i ha obtingut una certificació LEED Platinum.

[EN] The Alchemika Plastics Factory in the Camp de l’Arpa neighbourhood of Barcelona formed part of the old Costa Font industrial complex. The facilities, which took up two entire city blocks, are a Francesc Mitjans work and were built towards 1950. The current urban plan required the preservation of its original facade in its transformation into a mixed-use building. The construction of this facility completes the process of converting one of the blocks brought about by implementing a diverse, social agenda via a library, a nursery school, a community centre, and a residence for the elderly.

From the beginning, the conservation requirements placed on the shell of the old building affected the process of fitting everything into a complicated program. The brick work facade and the large, evenly-spaced vertical windows were existing features of the building that the project looked to incorporate by creating new interior spaces in a manner fitting to their scale and character. The difference in height of more than one floor between the two street corners meant that a substantial part of the project had to be realised underground. The shape of the narrow plot, the long dividing wall, and the density of its uses made it necessary to look for methods for drawing light into the heart of the building.

A system of alternating solid and empty longitudinal strips connects the various uses and spaces in both plan and sectional view. The two longitudinal inner courtyards and a series of double-height, interconnected interior spaces opened up the basement for the use of the library and allowed natural light and ventilation into much of the project.

[CAT] La fábrica de plàstics “Alchemika”, situada al barri del Camp de l’Arpa a Barcelona, ocupava part de l’antic conjunt industrial Costa Font. El conjunt, que conformava dues illes, és obra de Francesc Mitjans i fou construit cap al 1950. El planejament vigent preveia la seva transformació en un conjunt d’equipaments i determinava la conservació de la façana com a testimoni del passat industrial del barri.

La present intervenció completa el procés de reconversió d’una de les dues illes a través de la inserció d’un programa de caràcter social i divers llargament reivindicat per les entitats veïnals: Biblioteca, Escola Bressol, Centre de Barri i Residència per a gent gran.

L’envolvent predefinida suposava un condicionant que calia incorporar des de l’inici en el procés d’encaix d’un programa complex. La façana d’obra vista amb els grans finestrals de proporció vertical i ritme constant eren una preexistència que el projecte ha mirat d’integrar a través de la creació d’espais interiors coherents amb la seva escala i caràcter.

El desnivell de més d’una planta entre els dos xanfrans suposava que una part del programa hauria d’ubicar-se sota rasant. La geometria estreta del solar, la llarga mitgera i la densitat d’usos feien necessària la recerca de mecanismes que permetessin fer arribar la llum fins el cor de l’edifici.

Un esquema de franges ple-buit articula els diversos usos i espais en planta i en secció. L’obertura de dos patis longitudinals i la successió d’espais interiors de doble alçada interconnectats possibiliten l’aprofitament del sota rasant per a l’ús de Biblioteca i permeten la ventilació i il·luminació natural de la major part del programa.

[EN] A school with a unique educational project, pilot within the Barcelona’s public school network. Les Glories Square, a transforming urban environment full of potential, some of it yet to be decided.

[CAT] Una escola amb un projecte pedagògic singular, pilot dins la xarxa pública de Barcelona. La Plaça de les Glòries, un entorn urbà en transformació ple de potencialitats, algunes d’elles encara per concretar.

From the beginning, there has been a dialogue with the school and the Education Department. We are working together on a proposal to fit within the existing regulatory framework the specific needs of the school community.

Des del principi s’estableix un diàleg amb la comunitat escolar i el Departament d’Ensenyament. Es treballa conjuntament en una proposta per trobar encaix, dins el marc normatiu vigent, a les necessitats específiques del centre.

The planning required the projection of a high school building, that ended on ground floor + 4, besides, the plot dimensions invited to optimize the space of the playground as well as to create outdoor spaces within the building volume. This gave a response to one of the school requests of promoting teaching outdoors.

El planejament obligava a projectar una escola en alçada, finalment PB+4, a més les dimensions de la parcel·la convidaven a optimitzar al màxim l’espai destinat a pati, així com a generar espais exteriors dins el volum edificat.

D’aquesta manera es dona cabuda a una de les peticions de l’escola en afavorir l’activitat docent a l’aire lliure.

The school is arranged by floors grouped in pairs. On the ground and first floors there is located the public part of the programme, as well as the infants’ classrooms connected by their own internal staircase. The second and third floors house the Elementary programme in double block; these classrooms are located on both sides and interact through a central area where it is expected to enhance the teaching activity beyond the classes themselves. To this end, we have projected open classrooms to boost the student’s mobility in different learning environments, as required in a nondirectional model of school. On the fourth floor, there are the communal areas: the auditorium or gym and a large terrace with an orchard.

L’escola s’ha organitzat per plantes agrupades de dos en dos, a la baixa i primera hi trobem la part pública del programa així com l’aulari infantil que es relaciona a través d’una escala interior pròpia. Les plantes segona i tercera allotgen el programa de primària en doble bloc, les aules es situen a una i altra banda i es relacionen a través d’un buit central on es preveu potenciar l’activitat docent més enllà de les pròpies classes. En aquest sentit, s’han projectat espais oberts per estimular la mobilitat dels alumnes pels diferents ambients d’aprenentatge. A la planta quarta es troben els recintes col·lectius: la sala d’actes o gimnàs, així com una gran terrassa on s’ha disposat un hort.

[EN] ORIGIN The building of Ateneu9B was a former asphalt factory that was occupied by the neighbors of the district in the late 70’s to become it in the first creation factory in Barcelona city.

USAGE The Ateneu works since 1978 and has, since its beginning, the circus as an identifier.

It is a true “school of participation” that encourages the social commitment and solidarity among citizens.

OBJECTIVES We wanted that the steady rhythm of the existing structure were to become an ally of the project, becoming also the generating key of it. That’s why: •

We potentiate the functional/distributional existing organization making more seamless the relationship between the spaces of zone 1: gym / office, zone 2: bar / local and zone 3: theater.

The open space located between zones 1 and 2 gets closed and becomes the authentic hall of the building.

The outside porch of the existing structure is incorporated into the interior volume and is reinterpreted as a new element of communication and distribution. The top of this cast has the dual use of gutter cover installations and technical corridor.

We transform the small windows and the centered doors of the original building into a modulated unit enclosure. (23 modules of 5m wide x 4,5m high).

With independence of the aluminum carpentry, only two materials are combined in the façade: on the one hand we have the glass u-glass and, in the other, a coating of metal sheet that can be folded, flat or perforated according to their position and need.

[CAT] ORIGEN L’edifici de l’Ateneu9B era una antiga fàbrica d’asfalt que va ser okupada pels veïns del districte a la fi dels anys 70 per convertir-la a la primera fàbrica de creació de la ciutat de Barcelona.

USOS L’Ateneu funciona des de 1978 i ha tingut, des dels seus inicis, al circ com a element identificador.

Es tracta d’una veritable “escola de participació” en la qual es fomenta el compromís social i solidari entre els ciutadans.

OBJECTIUS Vam voler que el ritme constant de l’estructura existent es convertís en un aliat del projecte, passant a ser la clau generadora del mateix. Per això: •

Potenciem l’organització funcional/distributiva existent fent més coherent la relació entre els espais de zona 1: gimnàs/oficines, zona 2: bar/lokal i zona 3: teatre.

L’espai obert situat entre les zones 1 i 2 es tanca i passa a ser l’autèntic hall de l’edifici.

El porxo exterior de l’estructura existent s’incorpora al volum interior i es re-interpreta com a element de comunicació i distribució. Aquesta franja servirà com a canaló de coberta i, al mateix temps, passadís tècnic de manteniment i instal·lacions.

Transformem les petites finestres i portes centrades de l’edifici original en un tancament unitari modulat (23 mòduls de 5m d’ample x 4,5m d’alt).

Amb independència de la fusteria d’alumini, dos únics materials es combinen en la façana: d’una banda vidre u-glass (doble com a tancament i senzill com a revestiment) i, per un altre, revestiment de xapa metàl·lica plegada, llisa o perforada segons posició i necessitat.

[EN] For the first time in Barcelona, ​​two usually separate programs are combined into the same building: social housing with temporary shelters for the inclusion of the most vulnerable groups. The design of the overall project responds to 3 basic criteria:

[CAT] Per primera vegada a Barcelona es combinen 2 programes habitualment separats: habitatge dotacional i equipament d’allotjaments temporals per a la inclusió dels col·lectius més vulnerables. El disseny del conjunt respon a 3 criteris bàsics:

1. Urban Responsibility: we generate city and public space and we occupy the ground floor with collective services.

We organize the program into 3 vertical blocks, generating public space with an interior street that both separates and visually links the shelters with the dwellings, structures the circulation and allows cross-ventilation of the whole complex.

1.Responsabilitat urbana: fem ciutat, generem espai públic i equipem la planta baixa amb serveis col·lectius. Organitzem el programa en 3 blocs verticals, generant espai públic amb un carrer interior que separa i alhora relaciona els allotjaments amb els habitatges, organitza els accessos i comunicacions permetent una bona ventilació creuada de tot el conjunt.

2. Social Responsibility: We address the issue of social inclusion by programming a specific space for vulnerable groups. We are careful to match or compensate the conditions of the different pieces of the program and dignify the accommodations without increasing their cost. The temporary shelter building also allows reprogramming as it shares the same structure as the other building. We obtain thus a balance between the different parts of the program: all dwellings having the same qualities, there are no differences in orientation or sun exposure.

2.Responsabilitat social: entenem la inclusió i l’accessibilitat de les persones en risc d’exclusió social a partir del programa.

Igualem o compensem les condicions de les diferents peces del programa i dignifiquem els allotjaments sense augmentar el cost. Es podrà reutilitzar l’edifici d’allotjaments temporals amb un altre ús i obtenim un equilibri entre les parts del programa, tots els habitatges tenen les mateixes qualitats, no hi ha diferències en l’orientació ni la incidència solar.

3.Environmental Responsibility: we respond to place and program with a passive environmental attitude that reduces the energy consumption: good cross ventilation and good sun exposure. 100% of dwellings have sun exposure during the winter solstice. This allows for the winter garden features to function as heat collector covering 23% of the heating demand in winter. In summer, the winter cross ventilation of the winter garden and its daytime solar protection with Persian blinds covers 43% of the cooling demand. The passive strategies are complemented with highly efficiency heating systems such as aerothermia and heat recovery system through the double flow ventilation thus achieving an A energy-savings rating for the finished building.

3.Responsabilitat energètica: responem al lloc i al programa amb una actitud ambiental passiva que redueix la demanda energètica: bona ventilació i bona captació solar. Obtenim un 100% d’habitatges amb Sol. Això permet activar el dispositiu passiu captador d’energia solar de jardins d’hivern, que cobreixen un 23% de la demanda de calefacció a l’hivern. A l’estiu, la ventilació creuada nocturna del jardí d’hivern i la protecció solar diürna d’est amb persianes cobreix un 43% de la demanda de refrigeració. Això es complementa amb sistemes d’alta eficiència com la aerotermia i de recuperació de calor per ventilació de doble flux aconseguint així una certificació energètica A.

[EN] The construction tradition of buildings like this one has completely disappeared. At least they don’t build buildings with this unity and with such clear space clearness anymore.

The fact that nowadays contemporary art is not hanged, it is installed, has given examples where the success of spaces with permanent art installations, such as the Dia Bacon Foundation or the Chinati Foundation, discover the precise and attached relationship between art and space. This is perhaps an antagonism to the constructive excess of the last century, where thousands of square meters have been built in museums without any thought about it.

The first impression of the old industrial enclosure called Espai Serrahima is a continuous addition of roofs, entrances, sidewalls and untidy artifacts. The experience to work there is like creating an order within, a new order that could put the elements in relation between them.

The project is committed with the quality of the existent space, but at the same time wants to create additional variations to the formal structure.

[CAT] La construcció tradicional d’edificis com aquest ha desaparegut per complet. O almenys edificis amb aquesta unitat i claredat espacial. El fet que avui en dia l’art no es “penja”, sinó que s’insta-la, ha donat exemples d’èxit espacial, com ara la Fundació Dia Bacon or la Fundació Chinati, aquests espais descobreixen la precisa i propera relació entre l’art i l’espai. Això poder és antagònic l’excés constructiu de l’últim segle, on milers de metres quadrats de museu s’han construït sense tenir en compte això.

La primera impressió d’aquest conjunt industrial anomenat Espai Serrahima és un conjunt de cobertes, entrades, mitjaneres, i objectes desendreçats. L’experiència consisteix a crear un ordre dintre de la nau, un nou ordre que pot posar en relació tots aquests elements.

Es projecte tenint en compte la qualitat de l’espai existent, però al mateix temps es vol crear una addicional variació de la forma estructuradora.

[EN] The project is based on the need of the El Timbal theater school to move its activity into a new space. A change that had to be made in a very tight period of time, 12 months.

It begun with an exhaustive research of sites throughout Barcelona with the necessary requeriments to develop the activity of theater school. At the end of 2014, the negotiations for the rental of an old supermarket located at Carrer Roger de Flor 85 were closed. A great intervention was needed to respond to Timbal’s needs, character and identity.

The main idea of the project is based on the generation of a certain number of boxes-containers hosting the activities the new local will offer. Each type of box-container takes shape and texture based on its needs, distinguishing between classrooms (acoustic boxes), meeting rooms (workstations) and changing rooms and toilets (wet boxes). On the other hand, with the idea of minimizing the environmental impact of the building, measures have been proposed in order to reduce its energy demand, enhancing the passive operation of the building (cross ventilation of the corridors and all classrooms, increase of the thermal insulation of the enclosure and installation of 5 skylights type DeploSun with bioclimatic technology that allow the natural illumination) and increasing the efficiency of the active systems used (optimization of the power of the air conditioning system and installation of CO2 sensors that regulate the activation of the air renewal system). The development of environmental strategies has been supported by the cooperative Societat Orgànica.

[CAT] El projecte neix de la necessitat de l’escola de teatre El Timbal de moure la seva activitat en un nou espai. Un canvi que s’havia de realitzar en un període de temps molt ajustat, 12 mesos.

Es comença amb un exhaustiu procés de recerca de locals arreu de Barcelona amb els condicionants necessaris per a poder desenvolupar l’activitat d’escola de teatre. A finals de l’any 2014 es tanquen les negociacions per al lloguer d’un antic supermercat situat al carrer Roger de Flor 85. Era necessària una gran intervenció per a donar resposta a les necessitats, caràcter i identitat del Timbal.

La idea principal del projecte es basa en generar una sèrie de caixes-contenidors d’activitats que s’insereixen dins el volum del local. Cada tipologia de caixa-contenidor pren forma i textura en base a les seves necessitats distingint entre aules (caixes acústiques), sales de reunions (caixes de treball) i vestuaris i lavabos (caixes humides). D’altra banda, amb la idea de minimitzar l’impacte ambiental de l’edificació s’han proposat mesures que redueixen la demanda energètica d’aquesta, potenciant el funcionament passiu del local (ventilació creuada dels passadissos i de totes les aules, augment de l’aïllament tèrmic de l’envolupant i instal·lació de 5 lluernes tipus DeploSun amb tecnologia bioclimàtica que permeten la il·luminació natural de les aules) i augmentant l’eficiència dels sistemes actius emprats (optimització de la potència del sistema de climatització i instal·lació de sensors de CO2 que regulen l’activació del sistema de renovacions d’aire). Pel desenvolupament de les estratègies ambientals s’ha comptat amb la col·laboració de la cooperativa Societat Orgànica.

[EN] The commission is to add six classrooms, a dining room and a library to the existing Sant Jordi school, designed in the mid-seventies by MBM (Martorell Bohigas Mackay). Our goal was to design an indoors and outdoors learning space that provides engaging experiences for the little learners that populate it. Corridors become playgrounds and patios are sheltered by porches and a light and high pergola, that unites the new and existing constructions, a shade for the kids playground, and a protection net for the football pitch.

There was a design scheme made by the Catalan Departament d’Ensenyament that had to be followed. As it had some basic design mistakes which we were not allowed to change, we had to come up with a ‘solar building’, with an outer porous skin that brought optimal light and climatic conditions to the inside.

As the existing school is a Protected Architectural Landmark, we were suggested by the clients to use the same kind of materials. They were produced forty years ago, they are not available anymore. So we just decided to use whichever available systems and materials at hand. For still in 2014, material stock was an issue after the country’s economic downfall.

A hard, bare CMU block façade, which creates these conditions by very simple variations, creating patios, porches, galleries and privacy veils. This climatic cushion not only negotiates with sun’s rays, but also with all kinds of atmospheric variations, so children can realise they all become good weather. The school becomes the first porous passive structure built in Catalonia. It is based not in energy conservation, but in wise intercourse.

[CAT] L’encàrrec era afegir sis aules, un menjador i una biblioteca a l’escola existent, projectada a mitjans dels setanta per MBM (Martorell Bohigas Mackay). El nostre objectiu era dissenyar hàbitats d’aprenentatge interiors i a l’aire lliure, que regalin experiències estimulants, riques i compartides als nins que la poblen. Les aules es transformen en un suport de suro i OSB que ells completen amb les seves mans. Els passadissos es converteixen en espais de joc. Els patis s’embolcallen en porxos d’escala infantil. I una pèrgola alta i lleugera uneix la nova construcció amb l’existent, una ombra on els nins juguen a l’estiu i es protegeixen en els dies de pluja. El Departament d’Ensenyament ens presentà una organització en planta que el nostre projecte devia seguir.

Tènia errors bàsics d’orientació que se’ns va prohibir de modificar. Per solucionar-ho, explorem un edifici solar, amb un límit porós que portava llum agradable i les condicionis climàtics òptimes a l’interior.

El client també va suggerir que utilitzéssim literalment els mateixos materials i peces que l’edifici existent, ja que aquest està catalogat en el Patrimoni Arquitectònic local. Aquests peces s’han deixat de produir-se. Per facilitar i economitzar l’execució, decidim treballar amb recursos estàndard que tinguéssim al vast de la mà. Enlloc lames, utilitzem blocs de formigó.

Una membrana dura, nua i translúcida de blocs crea condicions de confort òptimes mitjançant variacions senzilles, configurant patis, porxos, galeries i vels d’intimitat.

Aquest gruix climàtic no solament negocia amb els rajos del sol, sinó amb tots els possibles agents atmosfèrics, perquè els nins aprenguin de cada canvi de temps. L’escola és un edifici passiu porós. Es basa no en la conservació d’energia, sinó en un intercanvi savi d’aquest, més proper als cicles estacionals mediterranis.

[EN] The aim of the intervention was the recovery of a ‘corner’ of the Gothic Quarter, a sensitive area from urban and heritage point of view, transforming the existing obsolete building into a container of public uses. As a result, the gothic tower of the church Santa Maria del Pi, hidden for centuries, was liberated.

[CAT] La intervenció tenia com a objectiu principal recuperar un ‘racó’ del barri Gòtic, un indret sensible des d’un punt de vista urbà i patrimonial, transformant l’edificació existent en desús, en un contenidor d’usos públics. Com a resultat de la operació s’allibera la torre de Sta. Maria del Pi, des de feia segles amagada.

It was restored the first bay of the building to maintain the historic character of the square and it was built a new body behind it which interacts with the existing. The new metal container gestures and dematerializes when it faces the tower, thus the masonry of the tower thus becomes the fourth closure of the space on all floors. Among the new and old, a cut of light and air link all floors and visually prolong the outside towards the inside.

Es rehabilita la primera crugia de l’edifici per mantenir el caràcter històric de la plaça i es construeix un nou cos al seu darrere que hi dialoga. El nou contenidor metàl.lic gesticula i es desmaterialitza al trobar la torre, i els carreus de la torre esdevenen així el quart tancament de l’espai en totes les seves plantes. Entre el nou i el vell, una escletxa de llum i aire relaciona visualment totes les plantes i prolonga l’exterior a dins.

The new body’s façade facing the tower is conceived as a contemporary reinterpretation of the old Gothic. The stony matter, massive, is transmuted into a semitransparent skin, the lines of stone are now metal profiles.

La façana del cos nou que s’enfronta a la torre esdevé una reinterpretació contemporània de l’antic gòtic. La matèria pètria, massiva, es transmuta en una pell de lames semitransparent, les impostes són ara UPE metàl.liques…

[EN] The Royal Mint of the Aragon Crown in Barcelona “La Seca” - from the Arabic word sekka: “place where currency is manufactured” - ran from 1441 to 1849 and was located in several buildings grouped on a single block of houses in the Ribera district of Barcelona.

[CAT] La Reial Fàbrica de Moneda de la Corona d’Aragó a Barcelona “La Seca” –del mot àrab sekka: “lloc on es fabrica moneda”- va funcionar del 1441 al 1849 i s’ubicava en diversos edificis agrupats en una mateixa illa de cases del barri de la Ribera de Barcelona.

Vestiges of 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved in the complex even though the main structures are from 17th century, with important alterations during 18th and 19th centuries.

En el conjunt s’han conservat vestigis del segle XIII i XIV tot i que les principals estructures són del s. XVII, amb importants alteracions al s.XVIII i XIX.

When the factory fell into disuse the building suffered again multiple modifications and was segregated into multiple properties.

The rehabilitation of part of these buildings that formed La Seca has been carried out in several phases to host the Brossa Foundation on the one side and the Espai Escènic Brossa on the other, provisionally maintaining its differentiated uses to become a single cultural center in the future.

For this reason, the last interventions have been focused at creating access points and connections between both buildings.

The fit of these cultural facilities in the existing historical buildings has been considered keeping the main types, structures and constructive elements and respecting the interventions it has suffered over time, without prioritizing any of them, and completing them with the construction of new specific elements such as a new stair, a bridge or the creation of a new interior patio, so that the final result of the sum of history and contemporaneity allows a good use of the whole.

Quan la fàbrica va caure en desús l’edifici va patir de nou múltiples modificacions i va ser segregat en múltiples propietats.

La rehabilitació de part d’aquests edificis que formaven la Seca s’ha executat en diverses fases per acollir la Fundació Brossa d’una banda i l’Espai Escènic Brossa de l’altra, mantenint provisionalment els usos diferenciats per esdevenir un sol centre cultural en un futur.

Per aquest motiu les darreres intervencions han estat dirigides a crear punts d’accés i connexions entre els dos edificis.

L’encaix d’aquests equipaments culturals en les edificacions històriques existents s’ha plantejat mantenint la tipologia, les estructures i els elements constructius principals i respectant les intervencions que ha sofert al llarg del temps, sense prioritzar-ne cap d’elles, i completant-les amb la construcció de nous elements puntuals tals com una nova escala, un cos pont o la creació d’un nou pati interior, de manera que el resultat final de la suma d’història i contemporaneïtat permeti un bon ús del conjunt.

[EN] The community centre El Roure and the library La Ginesta are a mix cultural facility which includes a community centre with a multipurpose theatre and a municipal library as a result of a joint work among technicians, administration and citizens. Fully integrated into its surroundings, the centre is a social and cultural catalyst which enhances a natural space by the landscape recovering of Begues Stream and of a downy oak which names the centre.

Begues, a municipality located in Garraf Natural Park, required a library, a community centre and a multipurpose theatre. To carry out the project, in which several local organisations and three different administrations are participating, a triangular plot which goes along the edge of Begues Stream was arranged.

The design began with the definition of an agreed and adequate functional programme and it culminated in the name’s choice by the citizens of Begues and the cataloguing process of a downy oak for its cultural value.

Two main ideas underpin the conception of the new facility: to generate a confluence “inner square” and to tune into the environment revitalising the Stream.

Designed with sustainability criteria, the building has type “A” Energy Efficiency National Certification. Its main features and benefits are Passive design reducing energy consumption compared to baseline, a heating and DHW supplied by a Biomass Central, the use of renewable materials and a rainwater harvesting system.

[CAT] El Centre Cívic El Roure i Biblioteca La Ginesta és un equipament cultural mixt que engloba un centre cívic amb teatre polivalent i una biblioteca municipal. Plenament integrat al seu entorn, el centre és un catalitzador social i cultural que revalora un espai natural amb la recuperació paisatgística de la Riera Fonda de Begues i d’un exemplar de roure martinenc que dóna nom al centre.

El solar, de geometria triangular, es troba a la falda d’un turó cobert de pins i limitat per l’Av. Sitges i el carrer Camp dels Prats en els seus costats menors i per la Riera Fonda en el seu costat major. L’edifici accepta els límits del solar com a propis i n’ocupa la totalitat per aconseguir una construcció horitzontal integrada en el paisatge de la riera i que pugui allotjar el vestíbul.

El disseny proposa recuperar la riera i el record col·lectiu d’un pèlec, popular indret d’esbarjo estiuenc. Per aquesta raó, la façana principal s’orienta a nord, recollint el flux de veïns provinents del camí Ral i revalorant aquest paisatge oblidat, revitalitzant el seu ecosistema i potenciant-ne una nova relació amb els usuaris del centre. Tant és així, que l’edifici vol ser riera, meandre, pèlec i fluir i reflectir l’entorn.

El perfil de geometria orgànica de la façana respon a la reverberació de la sinuositat del meandre i permet generar un nou passeig d’accés i abraçar el roure que dóna nom al Centre; la seva materialitat és de vegades especular, per reflectir i multiplicar el paisatge en cada fragment de vidre, i de vegades biosfèrica, per respectar la naturalitat de l’entorn.

[EN] Three starting points: understanding the historic value of Lleialtat Santsenca (1928),an old working class cooperative in the Sants neighborhood; knowing to the detail the building’s (physical) state to maintain as much as possible; and being sensitive to the whole collaborative process launched in 2009 by neighborhood organizations to recover the building.

To this end, four basic objectives were set out: first, taking advantage of everything that could be used from the original; second, defining an intervention strategy marking out the essential actions, conservative or not, allowing to recover and increase the potential uses of all those spaces; third, to establish an intensive dialogue – and tense, if due – with context; and fourth, to develop a sustainable proposal, regarding the work on the existing as well as the new interventions.

Inspired in Lina Bo Bardi’s Teatro Oficina, the Atrium is an intermediate bio-conditioned space that organizes all the circulations through a series of footbridges and stairs that evoke the image of the scaffolding in a construction site.

The building functions thermally through passive strategies based on inertia and insulation; three lightweight roofs permit natural lighting and favor ventilation.

By increasing the volume of the roofs it is possible to increase solar gain: in winter heat is collected thanks to a heat recovery system for the interior spaces; in the summer, the air in the top part of the atrium is reheated, forcing a convection which releases the hot air by opening the roof Ridge windows, actioned by automatic sensors.

[CAT] El projecte parteix de tres premisses: entendre el valor de la història de la Lleialtat Santsenca (1928), una antiga cooperativa obrera del barri de Sants; conèixer amb precisió l’estat (físic) de l’edifici per aprofitar tot l’aprofitable; i ser sensibles amb tot el procés de col·laboració que van iniciar les entitats del barri el 2009 per recuperar-lo.

Es plantegen quatre objectius bàsics: primer, aprofitar tot allò que fos útil de l’edificació original, enderrocant el que no fos reutilitzable; segon, traçar una estratègia d’intervenció definint aquelles accions imprescindibles, de caràcter més conservacionista o més additiu, que permetin recuperar i augmentar el potencial d’ús de tots els espais; tercer, establir un diàleg intens – i tens si és necessari – amb el context; i quart, elaborar una proposta sostenible, tant respecte la preexistència com a les noves intervencions.

Inspirat en el Teatre Oficina de Lina Bo Bardi, l’Atri és un espai intermig bioclimatitzat capaç de vertebrar totes les circulacions a través d’un conjunt de passerel·les i escales que evoquen la imatge dels andamis d’obra. L’edifici funciona tèrmicament a partir d’estratègies passives basades en la inèrcia i l’aïllament; tres cobertes lleugeres permeten la il·luminació natural i faciliten la ventilació.

L’augment de volum de les cobertes possibilita la captació solar: a l’hivern capta calor que es reverteix mitjançant recuperadors; a l’estiu es sobreescalfa l’aire de l’estrat superior de l’Atri, generant una convecció molt potent que expulsa l’aire calent per les finestres dels careners, accionats per sensors automàtics.

[EN] This temporary building is part of the provisional urbanisation of Glories’ Square in Barcelona. The program includes an information point, an exhibition area (showcasing the proposed project for the square), and a place to rent electric bicycles.

[CAT] L’edifici temporal forma part de la urbanització de la plaça de les Glòries de Barcelona. El programa funcional és un espai d’informació, una zona d’exposició sobre les obres de transformació de la plaça i un punt de lloguer de bicicletes elèctriques.

The pavilion is located over two pedestrian crossroads; one crossing in a sea/mountain axis and the other transversely connecting the nearby nursery oaks and the new pergola.

La peça es recolza sobre la cruïlla de dos recorreguts per a vianants. Un que travessa la plaça en direcció mar-muntanya i l’altre que defineix un eix que connectarà amb els altres dos equipaments provisionals: el viver d’alzines i la nova pèrgola.

The provisional building’s ephemeral condition is detachable and reusable. This, determined not only the choice of the structural system, a scaffolding construction, which has the aim of reducing the overall mark of the building left on the site; but also the building’s materiality, relating to the site’s context that is currently under-construction. This structure holds three skins: an impermeable and translucent poly carbonate skin, a shade mesh filtering sun radiation and a wire mesh surrounding the building for protection.

During the day, depending on the sun’s location, transparencies, shadows and reflections can be viewed both internally and externally, giving a constantly changing perception of the building.

At night, by placing artificial-lighting at a ground level, in between the polycarbonate skin and the shading mesh, the interstitial space is illuminated in a way that the source remains unseen. Both materials act as light diffusers, illuminating the internal space. From the exterior, the overlaying of skins creates a light atmosphere blurring the building’s limits.

La condició efímera de l’edifici provisional, desmuntable i reutilitzable, determina l’elecció del sistema estructural: una bastida capaç de minimitzar la seva petjada en el territori i una materialitat acord amb el context de les obres. Aquesta estructura actua com a suport de tres envolupants: una pell impermeable i translúcida de policarbonat, una malla d’ombreig que filtra la radiació solar i una malla metàl·lica de protecció que tanca l’edifici.

De dia, segons la posició del sol, les transparències, ombres i reflexos aconsegueixen tant des de l’interior com des de l’exterior una percepció canviant de l’edifici.

De nit, al col·locar la font de llum artificial, arran de terra, entre l’envolupant de policarbonat i la malla d’ombreig, s’aconsegueix il·luminar l’espai intersticial, de manera que mai es veu la font de llum. Ambdós materials actuen com a difusors, il·luminant l’espai interior de l’edifici. Des de l’exterior, la superposició d’envolupants genera una aurèola de llum que difumina els límits de l’edifici.

[EN] The development is located in an outlying neighbourhood of Barcelona, whose infrastructure has caused the area’s isolation. The Baró de Viver Civic Centre has been designed to revitalize its urban surroundings.

[CAT] El projecte s’implanta en un barri perifèric de Barcelona, aïllat a causa de les infraestructures on el Centre Cívic de Baró de Viver té com a comesa la dinamització de l’entorn urbà.

Goal To create a community building that local residents can identify with. Within a strict budget, we aimed to achieve high levels of energy performance without sacrificing comfort.

Objectiu Construir un edifici social amb el que els veïns es sentin identificats, sense augmentar el cost, assolint bons nivells d’eficiència energètica i sense renunciar al confort.

Strategy This duality is achieved by way of an indeterminate and neutral architecture, the building serves as a backdrop to the activity and the greenery. The architecture is based on strengthening relationships between users, enhancing the public space and establishing positive partnerships: a system that feeds into itself.

Mechanisms The green wall encircles and incorporates the centre’s functional elements: the garden with flowers and aromatic plants and urban vegetable gardens, as well as the specific functional elements of the centre: a community centre for the elderly, the auditorium and classrooms. A highlyequipped roof manages the building’s energy flows, producing electricity, providing air-conditioning within the centre and regulating the water flow.

The low-tech architecture is based on a prefabricated system, which results in sub-strategies for reducing energy consumption and the use of economic structural and constructive systems. Collectively the mechanisms create a building whose singularity and character derive from the vegetation, the people of the neighbourhood and its energy sustainability.

The Baró de Viver Civic Centre and Community Centre for the Elderly is the first social facility in Spain to receive LEED Platinum New Construction certification.

Estratègia Aquesta dualitat es gestiona a partir de interpretar l’arquitectura de forma indeterminada i neutre, com a teló de fons de l’activitat i el verd. L’arquitectura es basa en la potenciació de les relacions entre els usuaris, l’espai públic i els patrons d’associació constructiva. Una centralitat auto-construïda.

Mecanismes La tanca vegetada encercla i engloba el programa cívic; tant el jardí amb flors i plantes aromàtiques i horts urbans, com el programa específic del centre: l’espai per a gent gran, la sala d’actes i les aules. Una coberta híperequipada que gestiona els cicles energètics de l’edifici, tant la producció d’energia elèctrica, la climatització del programa cívic i el cicle de l’aigua.

La baixa tecnificació arquitectònica basada en un sistema prefabricat, que deriva en subestratègies de disminució de la demanda energètica i d’utilització de sistemes estructurals i constructius econòmics. La conjunció dels mecanismes donen com a resultat un edifici on el caràcter i singularitat la donen la vegetació, la gent del barri i la seva sostenibilitat energètica.

El Centre Cívic i Espai de Gent Gran de Baró de Viver, és el primer equipament Social amb certificat LEED Platinum de Nova Construcció d’España.

[EN] The new Guinardó Facilities Building is a joint operation of urban planning and architecture, allowing the creation of a new central area in the neighbourhood of Guinardó.

Municipal facilities and public Market square are connected to new pedestrian axis of Llívia St., where slope is less steep.

The project originates from public space, articulating four different singular areas: the new market Square, the Teodor Llorente’s Park, the Garrotxa St. widening and the interior closed garden.

These area limits, the façades, give rise to the volume of this 20.000sqm building that include 7 different facilities: Municipal Market, Supermarket, Primary Health Care Centre, Assisted-Living and Day-Care facilities, Youth Centre, Offices for the IMMB and underground parking.

This outward space disposition occupies all surroundings giving new urban permeability and space continuity to neighbourhood existing buildings.

The volume is fragmented and adapts to the existing topography, completing and integrating into the urban fabric and scale of the neighbourhood.

The final result gives priority to the city, to the urban continuity, with a common language set against the architectural singularity of each public facility.

[CAT] El projecte d’Illa d’equipaments del Mercat del Guinardó és una operació conjunta d’urbanisme i arquitectura que permet generar una àrea de nova centralitat pel Barri del Guinardó.

El conjunt s’organitza al voltant de l‘eix del carrer Llívia, el carrer de mínim pendent en un entorn de grans desnivells i de difícil accessibilitat.

La intervenció urbana proposa una intervenció compacta, reduint el consum de sòl i apostant per un pol d’equipaments construït en un sol edifici, combinant usos diversos en diferents nivells, fomentant la barreja d’usos i usuaris, i alliberant el màxim d’espai lliure públic i verd.

La proposta es genera des de l’espai públic, articulant quatre espais connectats entre si, de caràcter molt diferenciats: la nova plaça del Mercat, el parc de Teodor Llorente, l’Eixamplament del Carrer Garrotxa i el jardí interior d’illa.

Dels límits d’aquests espais sorgeix la volumetria, les façanes, un edifici que articula 20.000 m2 d’equipaments repartits en 6 programes diferenciats: un Centre d’Atenció Primària (CAP), una Residència Assistida per a gent gran, un Centre de Dia, un Casal de Joves Mercat, una superfície comercial i un aparcament soterrat.

La disposició de l’espai lliure el fa permeable i aporta la continuïtat urbana necessària entre els teixits d’habitatges que l’envolten. La volumetria es fragmenta i s’adapta a la topografia complicada de l’entorn, completant i integrant-se en el teixit i l’escala del barri. El resultat prioritza la ciutat, la continuïtat urbana, amb un llenguatge comú de conjunt enfront la singularitat arquitectònica de cada equipament.

[EN] 2014: RESSÒ project was born within the academic framework of the School of Architecture of Sant Cugat (ETSAV-UPC), as a proposal for the international competition of sustainable prototypes Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. For this contest, RESSÒ team proposes an urban rehabilitation strategy in response to the context of economic, social and ecological emergence caused by the current growth model.

This strategy is materialized in RESSÒ prototype: a collective space for tackling neighborhood problems.

Once the competition was over, the prototype was built again in the neighborhood of Sant Muç (Rubí) in order to implement this urban rehabilitation strategy.

2016: Thus RE(ACCIÓ) RESSÒ was born: a project for urban, social and energy regeneration on a neighborhood scale driven by collective action and citizen empowerment.

A methodology based on research and direct action is proposed for improving the urban metabolism of the neighborhood. The project works on the basis of four main areas of study: housing, mobility, resources and waste and social and economic factors.

To develop this project, by the end of 2017, RESSÒ prototype became the first Neighborhood Energy Center of Rubí. A platform that brings together citizens, public administration, universitiy and companies with the aim of promoting collaborative initiatives for the transformation of the neighborhood. Through this platform, several projects have begun, such as energy rehabilitation in homes and the improvement of public space and pedestrian paths.

[CAT] 2014: El projecte RESSÒ neix dins del marc acadèmic de l’Escola d’arquitectura de Sant Cugat (ETSAV-UPC), com a proposta per al concurs universitari internacional de prototips sostenibles Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. Per aquest concurs, l’equip RESSÒ proposa una estratègia de rehabilitació urbana com a resposta al context d’emergència econòmica, social i ecològica plantejat per l’actual model de creixement. Aquesta estratègia es materialitza en el prototip RESSÒ: un espai col·lectiu des del qual afrontar les problemàtiques de barri.

Una vegada finalitzada la competició, el prototip es torna a construïr al barri de Sant Muç (Rubí) per tal d’implementar aquesta estratègia de rehabilitació urbana.

2016: Així neix RE(ACCIÓ) RESSÒ: un projecte per a la regeneració urbana, social i energètica a escala de barri impulsat des de l’acció col·lectiva i l’empoderament ciutadà.

Es proposa una metodologia basada en la recerca i l’acció directa per a la millora del metabolisme urbà del barri i treballant en base a quatre àmbits d’estudi principals: habitatge, mobilitat, recursos i residus, i socioeconòmic .

Per desenvolupar aquest projecte, a finals de 2017 el prototip RESSÒ esdevé el primer Centre d’Energia de Barri de Rubí.

Una plataforma que aglutina ciutadans, administració pública, universitat i empreses amb l’objectiu de promoure iniciatives col·laboratives per a la transformació del barri. A través d’aquesta plataforma, s’han iniciat diversos projectes, com ara la rehabilitació energètica a les llars i la millora de l’espai públic i camins peatonals.

[EN] Turó de la Rovira is included in the last foothills of the Coastal Range before the change of slope that forms Barcelona’s plain. This geological formation emerges from the urban fabric with heights between 180 and 260 meters above the sea level and constitutes one of the widest balconies over the city.

The hilltop where the project is located has undergone several stages of urbanization starting at the beginning of the twentieth century with the construction of several summer homes for wealthy families from Barcelona. During the civil war an anti-aircraft battery was installed on the summit.

After the war a settlement based on self construction emerged. It is not until 2010 that the crown is regained for collective use with an intervention that brings back to the light the dense history of the site including all its layers.

In past recent years Barcelona’s planning directors worked with the aim to reintegrate Turó de la Rovira’s area into the urban grid. This operation required an intervention to improve the access that leads to the veranda through the small inhabited village of Marià Lavèrnia.

The project aims to mainly operate by modifying the topography. It simultaneously provides the necessary condition of a road access and the will to have successive horizontal planes that will allow an open appropriation of the public space. These terraced squares along the existing street seek to preserve and emphasize the domestic character that is and has been an intrinsic part of the history of the place.

[CAT] El Turó de la Rovira s’inclou dins els darrers contraforts del massís de Collserola abans del canvi de pendent que conforma el Pla de Barcelona. Aquesta formació geològica comprèn un seguit de turons d’alçades compreses entre els 180 i els 260 metres sobre el nivell del mar que emergeixen del teixit urbà i en constitueixen un dels seus més amples miradors.

El cim on s’ubica el projecte ha viscut diverses etapes d’urbanització que comencen a principis del s.XX amb la construcció de diverses cases d’estiueig de famílies benestants de Barcelona. Durant la guerra civil s’hi situen les bateries antiaèries. Acabada la guerra hi emergeix un assentament basat en l’auto-construcció i el barraquisme.

No és fins el 2010 que es recupera l’espai del cim per al seu ús col·lectiu amb una intervenció que fa visible la densa història del lloc incloent tots els seus estrats.

Recentment la ciutat de Barcelona ha estat treballant per reincorporar l’àrea del turó de la Rovira a la trama urbana.

Aquesta operació requereix d’una intervenció per millorar els accessos que condueixen al mirador de les antigues bateries travessant el petit nucli habitat de Marià Lavèrnia.

El projecte es proposa operar bàsicament mitjançant la modificació de la topografia. Es contempla al mateix temps la necessària condició d’accés rodat i la voluntat de disposar de plans horitzontals successius que afavoreixin l’apropiació oberta de l’espai públic. Aquestes placetes d’estada s’esglaonen al llarg del carrer existent cercant preservar i emfatitzar el caràcter domèstic que és i ha estat part intrínseca de la història del lloc.

[EN] The public competition challenge required to cover and adequate a multi-sports court. This fact developed a canopy-building proposal, which allows a sensitive reduction of mass, weight and sections in its structure. The design searches in the environment the main answers to its functional and geometrical definition:

[CAT] El concurs públic demandava el cobriment i adequació de les pistes poliesportives. Aquest fet comportà el desenvolupament d’una proposta d’edifici-marquesina que permetia una reducció substancial de la massa, pes i seccions de la seva estructura. El disseny busca en l’entorn les respostes principal per a la definició funcional i geomètrica.

1- A structural cover formed by a large-lighted prefabricated metallic wide span trusses, with a substantial reduction of costs and scheduled works length.

2- A wide transversal portic, as the main elevation facing the school, with its characteristic V-appearance to sustain the transversal structure 3- The relationship with pre-existences: the preservation of a pine grove in the north corner; the integration of the existing locker’s rooms and a slightly raised position which highlights its urban scale.

1.- Un cobriment estructural format per una sèrie de pòrtics metàl·lics lleugers i prefabricats, amb l’objectiu de reduir costos i temps d’execució.

2.- Un gran pòrtic transversal, com a façana principal encarada a l’escola, amb llur característica forma en V, per estintolar l’estructura transversal.

3.- La relació amb les preexistències: la preservació de la pineda de l’extrem nord, la integració dels vestidors existents i una posició lleugerament elevada que destaca la seva escala urbana.

After this first stage, the city council required a new improvement of the courts to fulfill the existing building codes and protect the acoustics of the adjacent dwellings.

The building’s configuration forced us to innovate in material and constructive answers with a double goal: to guarantee the proper levels of acoustic absorption and isolation, as well as an optimal integration within its nature.

Three independent works with a palette of three different materials associated: A- An absorbing and isolation partition, built in concrete, polycarbonate and perforated brick doubled wall with an inner rockwool filling, with a great level of inertia to reduce the reverberated noise.

B- A glass partition in the north-east side to reduce the acoustic impact to the school, preserving direct vision of the complex.

C- A heterogeneous sound-absorbing ceiling to cushion and soften the reflected sound wave.

Després d’aquesta primera fase, l’ajuntament va requerir una nova millora per acomplir amb la normativa vigent i protegir acústicament als habitatges veïns. La configuració de l’edificació ens va forçar a innovar en materials i solucions constructives, amb un doble objectiu: garantir els nivells adequats d’absorció i aïllament acústic, així com assegurar una òptima integració a la natura del conjunt. Tres treballs independents, amb una paleta de tres materials associats: A.- Un parament aïllant i absorbent, construït en formigó, maó foradat i policarbonat, amb llana de roca a l’interior, amb un grau d’inèrcia elevat per a la reducció del soroll reverberat.

B.- Un parament vidriat a la cantonada nord-est minimitza l’impacte sonor cap a l’escola, tot preservant la visió directa del conjunt.

C.- Un fals sostre aïllant i de configuració heterogènia que esmorteeix i suavitza l’ona sonora reflectida.

These works have made compatible the sport and educative activities with the required acoustical comfort, as well as a complement and improvement of the initial project, with its own language and philosophy.
