Volumetric arrangement: Three main substraction operations were set for all the dwellings to enjoy a minimum of 3h of direct solar radiation every day: a central void, the removal of the corner and the partial shortening of three levels at the Almogavers Street side. Organization: The central court is the main area to access retail, stairwell and the public space through the freed corner. The main building is organized with 5 cores that are connected with elevated pathways in the lower levels and that become independent on the top ones organizing the different typologies of dwellings. Chromatism: The situation of the building in the lot, in the corner of the island, and the relation that it establishes with the public space that crosses the island gives to this site a character attractive and singular. The definition of the volumes and the colors of the project depend on this urban situation and to its internal special organization. The dwellings: Their flexibility is based on the adaptability of the housings to different uses along the time. This capacity is achieved by arranging the structure in the fixed elements of the building, and to group the services in compact cores.

Industrialization and prefabrication are the starting point of the design concept of this social housing block. There was an aim to import the efficiency of techniques commonly used in other construction fields, such as industrial sheds, to the domestic realm.

There is a clear division between supporting structure and enclosures. On one side there is a prefab structure made of concrete pillars, beams and floors and on the other side there are some closed modules that organize and arrange the space inside the dwellings.

The structure is neutral, the most simple possible while long-span. It is an useless element by itself. By laying some modules on it, the structure becomes a qualified space. Those “boxes” turn the neutral structure into a comfortable space, a space for living. At the same time, by placing these modules on the building perimeter, they configure the facade, which is not regarded as an added element.

South-North orientation is provided to each apartment, so that good insulation and ventilation is guaranteed. The interior is organized by placing more intimate pieces (bedrooms and bathrooms) inside the “boxes”, while living and dining spaces are outside them, so they can offer an open plan layout.

The Connection_ project aims to create a network of cultural connections between cities as a means of spreading the values of urbanism and architecture. A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project, which also offers other events such as conferences and meetings between universities; intended to create synergies between the professional architects involved. Barcelona has become a brand recognized worldwide, of wich more disciplines have contributed to the recognition of the city popping architecture and urbanism. One of the main elements of the “Barcelona Model is the quality of residential buildings. Currently a younger generation of architects has been able to address the issue of new housing programs responding to the new social demands and urban areas. The Connection_Export Barcelona project tracks new types and new ways to integrate social housing and urban public space, creating new synergies for urban real estate that, during the boom years, had been abandoned.
