This year’s Clinical Research Conference aims to explain why clinical research in Greece is lagging

During the conference, all aspects regarding clinical research will be analyzed and all current relevant
problems will be presented by the participating researchers, patient associations’ members, officials of the Ministry of Health and Health Care Regional Authorities, hospitals representatives, as well as economists, journalists and pharmaceutical and CRO (Contract Research Organization) companies executives.
This year, before the Clinical Research Conference opens its doors, a VIP breakfast for 30 guests will be held for officials of the Hellenic Ministry of Health and the Greek National Organization of Pharmaceuticals as well as representatives of the sponsors and all other public sector entities invo in clinical research.

Overview: Despite the efforts that have been made in the last years, mainly on an institutional level, Greece still has significant deficiencies in the clinical research sector. In this crucial period, our country is in immediate need of foreign private investments, so as to put an end to the emigration wave of our scientists. Undoubtedly, the clinical research institutional framework which was adopted in February 2013 was an important step forward, despite its weaknesses. However, on a practical level, a major problem is that the relevant legal provisions are not being applied. As a consequence, there are still many obstacles and delays in the realization of clinical research studies. The reality is that the State does not view clinical research as a priority, in spite of its promises to the contrary, which proves that there need to be more intensive efforts. At the same time, the Greek economy is showing some slow signs of recovery, while the public health care system is starting to get over the five-year long shock of drastic measures. Hence, now is the “Time for Action�. This is the slogan of this year’s third Clinical Research Conference, which aims mainly to mobilize all competent authorities so as to overcome all distorted perceptions, dogmatisms and bureaucratic hindrances. Clinical research could be the antidote to recession. Among the most significant benefits that it can offer are new jobs, constant education and utilization of human resources in specialized sectors. Clinical research could contribute decisively to bringing high quality scientific knowledge and advanced technology in our country. The participation of Greece in international (multicentric) studies could ensure many advantages, such as encouraging medical research programs in hospitals, establishing communication channels with the international medical community, promoting ongoing education and training in medical practice as well as disciplined documentation.
