FOOD

How has Pakistan changed in terms of spending and eating out? There has been a tremendous change over the past five to six years. A lot of young people are going out and spending on food. Café Flo has been there for 20 years now and has always done well but just recently there is much more business than there was 20 years ago, because of how people are spending on food. They are much more aware now than before, they are definitely more demanding and don’t accept substandard food. Five years ago when I opened Xander’s, I opened it because there was nothing like it but now there’s a lot of competition; almost every month a new restaurant is opening. It was easy to open Xander’s back then as there was no competition but now it’s a very fast growing industry and food has become a culture and everything revolves around it. What is the process of developing a new menu or new dishes at Xander’s? There’s no fixed process, everything is based on inspiration and research. We also get lucky at times while experimenting, we come up with selfmade recipes which turn out great and we include it on our menu. The process is usually the same but it’s lengthy and there’s a lot of practice involved in the kitchen. It’s all trial and error and we don’t stop till we get what we want. How is the menu at Xander’s different from what others are offering? When we opened Xander’s we were very new, we were the trendsetters. There wasn’t any café as such so it was really exciting for our customers when we served them fancy items like wood fire pizza and eggs benedict etc. But now a lot of restaurants have opened up that are serving similar dishes. However, what keeps Xander’s different is that we stay true to who we are. We keep our ingredients simple, limited, and don’t overdo our food. We don’t make it heavy so our customers walk out feeling light.

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY

With Hasan Rizvi and Hina Ramzi

Husband and wife duo, Hasan Rizvi, CEO Body Beat PR and his wife Hina Ramzi, a designer, talk about the strong bond they share. From how they met, to their best memories together and their greatest strength as a couple, they share it all

How and where did you both first meet? Believe it or not, we met through a prank call at a time when there wasn’t caller ID or cell phones. That developed into a phone-relationship for a few years before we actually met. What did you like/dislike about each other in your first meeting? Hasan: I loved that she was herself, pretty and absolutely charming. Hina: I liked that he brought his female friends along to break the ice. I already liked him before we decided to meet. How long did it take to decide that he/she was the one you wanted to marry? Hasan: We both knew at ‘hello’. As cliché as it sounds, that’s the reality of it. Hina: We were 13 and had no clue what the future held for us, but we knew that this was going to last. MARCH 18-24 2018

60

How do you demonstrate your love in different ways? Hasan: I am definitely more expressive and romantic. Presents are the best way to express for me. Hina: I let Hasan do the expressing, I keep my gestures small and more personal. I recently surprised Hasan by doing up his office. Although I think I did a very lame job. What frustrates you most about your partner? Hasan: When arguments get heated, Hina’s defence mechanism makes her emotional side shut down, so talking beyond that point becomes useless. Hina: I let Hasan do the screaming and apologising. Who makes up first if you have a fight or argument? Hasan: Definitely me. Hina: Hasan. One thing you love about each other? Hasan: Hina is the most amazing mother, daughter-in -law and friend, above all Hina puts me before herself. An art I have yet to master. Hina: Hasan has a heart of gold. He goes out of his way for strangers and expects nothing in return. Something you would want to change about your partner? Hasan: Absolutely nothing. Hina may not be perfect but she is perfect for me. Hina: Lots! Just joking! I wish he would stress less and enjoy life more. Something you two have in common? Hasan and Hina: Shopping, kids, dogs, family, friends, our bedroom, and each other. Who keeps the room the tidiest? Hasan: Me and my OCD. Hina: Hasan has issues! He cleans compulsively. Your best memory together so far? Hasan: I was sick once and Hina turned up at my door with six flowers all in different colours. As she gave me each flower, she told me a memory we shared with that colour. It was the sweetest most romantic moment ever. Hina: We still have lots of memories to make. Your greatest strength as a couple? Hasan and Hina: Understanding and trust. MashAllah. Describe your relationship in three words? Hasan and Hina: Friends, united and family.

LIFESTYLE

6am: Time to wake up and get things ready for my 7am personal training class which happens on my roof. Morning yoga has a different energy and it really preps you up for the day, lightens your mind and strengthens your body.

7am: My first client arrives. There’s seriously something majestic about early morning yoga. We watch the sunrise and get started for the day with a stronger body and clearer mind.

8am: I prepare a mug of hot water with lemon, honey, clove and a pinch of turmeric. After that I have to rush to my next client’s house by 8:30am for another personal training session.

10am: This is my third yoga class of the day! I’m looking forward to my hefty breakfast, once done.

11am: After the 10am class, I walk back home. The class is in my neighborhood so I can really enjoy the walk without any sense of insecurity and soak in this moment with gratitude. Here comes my breakfast with three eggs, a slice of bran toast and a bowl of yoghurt, followed by my first and only cup of coffee for the day. I use this time to read up or listen to podcasts. MARCH 18-24 2018

62

1.30pm: Since I live with my in laws, we sit together for lunch (I’m already full so I just munch on salad/yoghurt), my mum in law and I catch up over a hot mug of green tea which is made with lots of interesting herbs.

3pm - 5.30pm: Back to my mental enrichment! My activities vary from reading different articles (not particularly yoga centric), listening to music, planning my Instagram posts, replying to queries. I also try to make some time for my own yoga practice. During this time, I make sure I call my husband and see how his day is going.

6pm: I sit down and review what I will be doing for my 7pm outdoor class for ladies, which happens three days a week or my mixed sessions at Spartan Fitness which are twice a week. Then I freshen up and get ready. My husband rushes from work, just in time to drop me.

8pm: Once the class is over and I’ve packed up, I speak to my clients to see how they feel both physically and emotionally. This is something I make sure to do after all my sessions, as client feedback and satisfaction is of critical importance.

9.30pm: Dinner time with the family, where we all catch up and enjoy some vibrant discussions.

10.30pm: Time to shower and finally find some time to sit back and relax with the hubby and friends. When we’re not expecting friends, we watch a TV show or a movie and I review my yoga sequence for the next day.

12am: At this point I’m half way dozing off but trying real hard to follow whatever we’re watching but I know I can’t since my mind is already on my 7am class. Since I work throughout the week, including my 11am weekend classes at Zenfit Gym, it’s very important to get at least six hours of sleep.
