99 reasons to exercise, but fat loss ain’t one The reality is that the majority don’t see beyond fat loss and “getting toned”, to start hitting the gym. Nothing irritates me more than when people don’t realise the countless benefits that resistance training and movement actually brings. Improved longevity, bone density, strength, basal metabolic rate, lymphatic system, mood and mind just to name a few! Do it for these.
The
Notepad With Mehak Taherani Owner and Head fitness coach at MUV Base, Mehak Taherani is all about getting your facts right when it comes to fitness and dietary habits. She shares six tips and tricks to get the most out of your fitness regime and doing what feels right!
Go heavy Ladies! (and the gents too) stop training with pink dumbbells or doing endless miles of cardio on that dreadmill. It’s not helping. Ideally train with loads, ranges and intensities that will help you gain the most bang for your buck. There is a place for training heavy, and a place for lighter loads. But from what I have seen, people do not train heavy enough. Spend time learning to execute the movement and exercise correctly, and start building the weight on from there.
Consistency over optimality How long do you think you can sustain going without your top five favourite foods? Too many misinformed people are claiming to be “experts” and are preaching fitness fallacies. Consequently, too many people falling for the trap of “eliminating” entire foods and macro groups! “no carbs”, “keto”, “protein only”, “juice fasts”. What if I told you, that you can achieve better results, without macro and ‘off-limit food’ exclusion? Stop chasing that “perfect diet” and training programme. There is no such thing. There is only what works for you. Consistency, moderation and context, is key.
Prime, shine and rewind Always, warm up. I tend to mobilise and perform more dynamic stretches at the start of my session to prime the muscles and joints for go-time! Unless I am being extremely lazy, I will do the static cool down yoga-esque stretch at the end of a training session. I absolutely believe that it can go a long way in terms of preventing injury and helping recovery. Don’t skip these!
Don’t be an obsessive #Browndieter It is important to have satisfying meals, not half hearted ones. I am a big believer in eating the foods that our ancestors have been eating. Can you even begin to imagine how good our bodies actually are at digesting these very foods? Hello, my happy desi DNA! I absolutely love desi food and home cooked meals – Of course I still eat burgers, fries, pizza and pasta (some of my favourite meals) when I’m out, without an ounce of regret or guilt.
Educate thyself The psycho-somatic relationship is undeniable. Make a cognitive effort to do what feels best. Seek the right advice, follow legitimate knowledge over hot trends, do the trial and error, learn to listen, analyse, research, filter and apply. But most of all, find what you love and chase it relentlessly. In fitness and in life, both. MAY 20-26 2018

How did you get started in your career? Our design journey began with a modest desire to redecorate our home and curate a space that embodied our personalities. Failing to locally find the kind of design prowess that we sought in home accessories, we decided to venture out on our own and explore the skill of local artisans. That simple journey resulted in the birth of Creo. What and/or who are some of your design inspirations? Inspiration is everywhere – in fashion, nature, travel and history, but if we were to name individuals, we greatly admire Kelly Wearstler, Nate Berkus and Jonathan Adler. What do you like most about your job? The ability to transform a space and give it a spirit; your surroundings contribute to your creativity, they can energise you, inspire you and calm you. Creating evocative spaces makes this worth it for us. What is most challenging about your job? We faced many challenges in setting up Creo but the joy we have experienced on our journey has eclipsed those challenges. How would you describe your design style? How varied are your designs? Do you have a signature touch with your designs? Our aesthetic is contemporary with an adventurous flare. That’s our signature. The idea is to merge contemporary influences with functionality, sophistication and a hint of glamour. Within this

aesthetic, we are now putting together some immaculate pieces for our second collection. What are the home decor/design trends for 2018? There are a number of design trends to follow in 2018 but perhaps two of our favorites are luxe metallic accents in decor and indoor foliage. These trends will take centre stage this year with people incorporating more brass and copper to anchor their home décor and plants to give a calm, peaceful vibe to their space. Within your own home, what’s your next project? We are really excited about redoing our formal living area. We are toying with the idea of adding pops of intense hues with lush, bold upholstery and snazzy cushions to go with it. Describe yourself in three words. We are two very different individuals but together we are curious, inspired and adventurous. Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about? We are working on some standout pieces for our next collection that will allow punctuation of spaces with a luxe aesthetic. What are your design dreams/goals? Our design goal is to be able to offer luxurious designs within reach. We want our products to be as accessible to clients as they can be without compromising our aesthetic.

Marvel fans lose it after Iron Man’s goes missing Twitter was buzzing with outrage and disbelief when it was revealed that Iron Man’s suit had been stolen from a storage facility. Los Angeles police said the gold and red suit worn by Robert Downey Jr in the original 2008 superhero smash hit went missing on May 8. Officer Christopher No said that the owners of the warehouse believe the iconic costume, valued at $325,000 vanished between February and April 25 from the prop storage warehouse in Pacoima, located north of downtown Los Angeles. We can’t stop thinking if this is for real or a PR stunt?

Zantiana Saqib
Gift connoisseur, Zantiana Saqib of Keepsakes by Zantiana speaks to us about how she started using her creative ability to blend different ideas and innovative concepts together into arresting new forms by making the perfect gifts and invites that definitely make for memorable keepsakes! From what inspires her, to her favourite design, to what her future plans are; she tells us all!
How and when did you decide to choose this career path? I had never planned to be a gift connoisseur but had always enjoyed making elaborate invites and giveaways for my children’s birthdays. My mother encouraged me to create my son’s birth announcements 10 years ago and I received an overwhelming response from friends and family. I began getting requests for orders on its design and in turn, “Keepsakes” was born. Share a memorable story with us about a design you made? A giveaway I designed for a client was replicated multiple times by gifting stores as well as gift specialists and sent to me as a gift several times, which was rather amusing! What inspires you and how do you conceive your designs? All forms of art are a source of inspiration for most of my designs. I usually start off with a mood board and build it up with various ideas, sketching and sampling and eventually creating the perfect artistic gift. MAY 20-26 2018

Is there any design that you are emotionally attached to and why? The ‘Bed of Roses’ I designed for my niece’s birth announcement is deeply personal as I spent a great amount of time and effort on it. What kind of products does your collection comprise of? We try to make each collection suitable for everyone - both genders and children. From home products, to watch boxes to fancy boxes with silk scarves, we try to make our product the ultimate gift for anyone, wrapped elaborately yet elegantly to utmost perfection. Describe your style of work in three words. Clean, detailed, effective. What is your Ramazan collection all about? Our Ramazan Collection is a “Bundle of Blessings” for your loved ones. We have beautiful dupattas, English Quran, dates, Ittar, scented candles in antique mirror boxes, “Double Blessing” drawers and “Ramadan Kareem” high gloss finishes all tied up with our signature band. What do you have planned for children in your upcoming collection? For the girls we have floral personalised bags, pink stitched scarves and skirts along with a digital tasbih, striped foam prayer mat and Ramazan book. For boys, we have a fun personalised denim bag and prayer cap with a plush prayer mat, Ramazan book and digital tasbih. Children will enjoy their Ramazan, showing off their gift bags and will be encouraged to pray on their new mats and coverings with their elders. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I absolutely love yoga, watching Netflix with my daughter and goofing around with my younger children. Is there anything on your radar that you wish to make in the future? We want to venture into corporate gifts with an edge for they currently lack meaning and are rather monotonous.
