By Maha Rizvi Style-star, a full-time mother and ace designer Mahgul Rashid’s closest pal, Ayesha Noon Khan, takes us behind-the-scenes at Mahgul for Al Zohaib Textiles’ latest lawn collection. Follow us to Ubud, Indonesia to find out why Mahgul’s debut lawn collection is such a sensation already

The journey: was never ending! I have flying anxiety, which I have been battling for eight years now, and somewhere in my head I thought the flight Doha onwards was five and a half hours. So we board the flight from Lahore to Doha still making our way through the isle and Mahgul casually mentioned that the flight from Doha to Ubud is 10 hours long. I wanted to run off the aircraft at that point. I counselled myself all the way to Bali – this lawn defifinitely made me a stronger person! The food: everything there was organic and fresh. There were lots of smoothies and exotic juices. More than mineral water, Indonesian’s drink coconut water which was amazing. The best thing we ate there APRIL 16-22 2017

54

were these cod croquettes at a restaurant called Hujan Locale, a must try for anyone visiting Ubud. The weather: The weather there is similar to our monsoon season. Strong sun, rain showers and extreme humidity. It was awesome for the skin but a defifinite bye-bye to good hair days! The model: The model was super-professional. She flew in from Australia for the shoot. Hair and make-up calls would start at 5:30am everyday, and she was always on time and never complained once about the food, being tired or uncomfortable. She was excellent to work with and stunning to look at! The schedule: was tight. We had a total of three days, one day to scout locations and two days to shoot a total of 28 outfifits including cover shots and editorials. We would be ready to shoot by 7-7:30am. The shoot would go on till the light allowed, so the team had 12-13 hour days. However, we all had such a blast and everybody was so professional that it felt like more of a holiday. The hotel: Our production manager recommended that we should stay at the location where we were meant to shoot and booked us at this fabulous eco-resort called Bambu Indah. American architect and jewellery designer, John Hardy has curated it. It has breath-takiing views and incredible raw architecture, but it defifinitely isn’t for the faint-hearted. I defifinitely recommend it to nature lovers visiting Ubu ud. Foreigners understanding of lawn: was very limited. Theyy hadn’t seen the material before and weren’t familiar with the concept of the three-piece shalwar kamizz and dupatta. However everyone was totally intrigued by Mahgul for Al Zohaib Textiles’ prints and they say kept saying how the dupattas’ would make such beautiful sarongs.

55

APRIL 16-22 2017

How long did it take you to find the perfect location? The process to find the perfect location was one of the hardest parts of the journey. Essentially it started while we were still in Lahore. We first spoke to the production team in Bali, gave them a project brief and shared the Mahgul for Al Zohaib Textiles lawn mood boards, after which they started scouting locations for the campaign. The production head then sent us images of various locations that we narrowed down while in Lahore. After getting to Ubud we physically went to check those places and of course there was the stressful chopping, changing and relocating but luckily we found some gorgeous properties, perfect for the shoot. How many locations did you look at? We looked at four or five locations out of which it was narrowed down to two. On the first day we shot at Bambu Indah and were thrilled with the results of day one. While wrapping up on set the production manager came to us and said that the next day’s location had fallen through. So here we were thinking it was time to finally relax and unwind, but sitting without a location at 6pm we were ready to drown ourselves in the resort’s natural spring pools! The production team was very supportive and helped us narrow down a few more places. We all loaded up in our van and drove around Ubud to find a new location. Finally we visited a fabulous place called Warrick Ibah. An old properly which was previously owned by royalty, it was exactly what we were looking! What was your favourite location and why? Bambu Indah for me was just stupendous! I’m heavily inspired by nature and the raw, natural vibe of the resort was nothing less than therapeutic. A perfect 10/10! APRIL 16-22 2017

56

List three unexpected things that happened at the shoot: 1. So we are at Lahore airport and we see our photographer Alee Hassan (who was meant to have left for Ubud on a separate flflight)! Apparently when he arrived at the checkin counter earlier that evening the airline informed him that the agent booked him for the 20th of April instead of the 20th of March. There was absolute chaos, as he had to be rebooked to leave with us two hours later. God bless Amir Rashid, Mahgul’s husband, for saving the day because this shoot couldn’t happen without Alee’s genius, I still don’t know how he managed it! 2. The location getting cancelled last minute in Ubud. 3. We were down in the make-up area and everything just started shaking. First we thought that someone was jumping around because the stilted cabin was purely made of wood and bamboo, but we soon realised it was an earthquake and ran out, It surely got our adrenalin going for the shoot! What was your favourite Mahgul lawn design? One that is pale-grey with white embroidery, it has white pants and a a — it’s printed black and white dupatta amazing so be sure to keep a look out for that one. Then there is one with a green and white geometric print shirt and black and cream pants. What I love most about it is that the dupatta a is lawn (not silk) and is completely embroidered in Mahgul’s signature chaddarr style, making it an extremely versatile piece that can be used in so many ways. There is also this lotus print, which I really adore. She made a conventional three-piece suit for it but also developed a gorgeous lawn sari with it, a defifinite number for summer dinners and dholkis! What was the strangest thing you ate? I wouldn’t call it strange, but this drink called jamu u was very interesting. It’s a turmeric drink that is made with lemon juice and ginger. It is high in antioxidants and is often referred to as the drink of life. It has a slightly bitter taste but I found it quite delicious — it is served everywhere in Ubud.

57

APRIL 16-22 2017

What was your favourite shot from this shoot? One of my favourites was the first image that was released. It’s a very intense shot of just her eyes with the rest of the face covered by one of the dupattass in beautiful hues of greens, blues and yellows. And of course all the sari shots are just gorgeous. Name a new friend you made on set: Our taxi driver Joko! He was our handyman, tour guide and he assisted us on set — he’s quite multitalented. If I go back to Ubud he would be the first person I would call. Rosario, our Italian make-up artist who recently worked in Bombay for two years and had a good understanding of our culture and traditions. He was very open and down-to-earth, and became a good friend. Did you learn anything new about Mahgul on this shoot? I’ve always connected with Mahgul on her fashion aesthetic but after observing her through this process I feel she’s an even bigger genius. For someone who doesn’t wear lawn let alone design it, the way she harnessed the challenge and made it her own was amazing. At a time when designers were shooting their lawn campaigns, Mahgul had just signed her first lawn deal. In two months, understanding, designing, styling and shooting 28 prints is nothing less than remarkable. But more than that it was the honesty to her work which was the real spirit carrying this campaign. She was relentless and there was no compromise at any point, I have nothing but admiration and respect for her work ethic!

THE VAULT WITH ZARA AND HINA FATIMA Footwear designers and the proud owners of Mochari, talk about their trendy yet traditional shoe collection

How and when did you get interested in shoes? Our passion for shoes has always been there. Since the time we started wearing our black school shoes, we wanted to make them look preppy. We decided to materialise the passion into an experiment, and wanted people to invest in shoes that reflects on our culture and what Pakistan offers. So here we are! What are your favourite shoes from your collection? There are many! Both of us have different favourites, but we do share mutual love for some of our shoes. ‘The Peshawaris’ and ‘The Lace Shoes’ are two such shoes. They are also our best sellers. Is there any shoe that you are emotionally attached to and why? The very second ‘The Peshawaris’ came off the shoe mould our grandmother took it and said, “you guys can wait till the launch, I’m wearing it now”. This story dates back to December 2014 and ever since then she has been wearing them. That shoe is one of Mochari’s top sellers. It swipes off the racks within seconds of being restocked. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite shoes: Our best sellers in the beginning were ‘The Peshawaris’ and back then we only had one thing in mind that whatever we make should reflect our rich heritage. So our whole Eid collection consisted of peshawari sandals. Before this only men wore peshawaris so we made sure to use hand embroidery and indigenous cloth that would attract hesitant women to wear something androgynous. Soon the trends and mind-sets changed and they became our best sellers.

65

APRIL 16-22 2017

Is there anything on your radar that you want to make in the future? Since Pakistan has a diverse culture and this is reflected in our attire, we have been thinking of introducing accessories to Mochari. These accessories would incorporate materials that are readily available in our country and will be an amalgamation of traditional and modern aesthetics.

How would you describe your body type? I would say I have a swimmers body type — I have broad shoulders but I am narrow at the hips. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Not really. Maybe I am a little less toned since I have become irregular as of late with my workouts. I tend to skip meals thinking I will maintain something. Yes, it’s a misconception but it feels good. How has your style changed over the years? I love going with the trends of the moment though I’m not a martyr if its not flattering. My style hasn’t really changed too much. I follow a relaxed look in the day, usually opting for a jumpsuit or cargo pants with a t-shirt. In the evenings I go for a more refined look in case I have to step out and more importantly, to feel like work is over! In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? None in particular and I am definitely not pointing it out. Why draw attention to a troublesome area if it’s (hopefully) not noticeable! How do you dress your body according to your body type? I am age appropriate for sure. I love flared, wrap trousers with blouses or a silk t-shirt. I also love long wrap dresses and kaftans. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? When they follow trends or styles because others wear them. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Either fitted trousers with an oversized blouse, or a long dress with a scooped back and a high, front slit for the evening. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? Short dresses! It just throws my frame off and honestly I just don’t think it looks classy on me.

T

his versatile white tunic with cutwork embroidery is an example of the designers’ elevated aesthetic. The designers’ remark: “We love how each of the women here, have put a unique and summer-ready spin on our ‘Dolmen Sleeve Tunic’. These ensembles prove that this top can be worn at home or on a holiday abroad, throughout the day or in the evening, whether your style is classic or edgy.

WITH NASREEN & SADIA

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diff iff fferent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Ayesha Umer Finance Professional

My personal style is classic and understated. I think this breezy Nasreen & Sadia blouse is so comfortable and perfect for spring. I wore it belted with skinny jeans and accessorised with metallic Cole Haan flats and a casual clutch. This outfit would be a cute option to wear at any relaxed, daytime gathering.

APRIL 16-22 2017

Madyha Farooqui Jewellery Designer and Founder, The Gem Suite

I typically mix casual, androgynous clothing and accessories with contrasting glamorous pieces. Leather leggings are my wardrobe staple for the day or night. I styled this pretty Nasreen & Sadia top, with a black lace camisole and leather leggings worn with edgy Camila Skovgaard heels. A chic teal, satin clutch from Fendi added a pop of colour. My go-to accessories are diamonds set in rose gold, and so I accessorised with pieces from my jewellery line.

Beenish Rana Designer

I believe being elegant and classy never fails to charm. White is a classic for the summer and always maintains its grace. I styled the Nasreen & Sadia top with a pair of comfy, blue bell-bottoms to break the monotonous colour. This style will also aid in beating the heat this summer. Fashion accessories always incite the beauty of a look. Hence, I accessorised with a chunky, topaz ring and a pendant, which provokes a simple, yet poised look.

e visit Zeba Faruqui’s home on a chilly Karachi evening. As we wait by the intricately detailed, large, dark-wood door, reminiscent of another era, we can’t help but observe the textured walls, the antique tiles and the fi ne craftsmanship evident on the entrance door. The door opens. Contemporary furniture occupies the home, while pristine white walls, modern fl ooring, and abstract paintings lighten up the house. As we walk towards our host’s favourite corner, we notice an eclectic mix of antique accents around the house. Faruqui greets us warmly and walks us up to her terrace. While we glance at the serene view of Karachi, she says: “This spot reminds me of the courtyards that my parents used to have in their homes decades ago. This is a very private area for me, no matter what time of day it is; you’ll always find me sitting here. If I’m up around Fajr, I come to see

the sunrise and hear the birds chirping. The day is just beginning and I can feel that energy. In the evening, while I’m out here having my tea, I hear the labourers play their flutes and string instruments, which serves as great backdrop music.” Faruqui further explains that she finds her terrace to be relaxing, and that she is always in a pensive, reflective mood when out here. What we find most striking and what reflects beautifully in the space is Faruqui’s unique eye and imagination. She tells us about various pieces which she has collected from different parts of the world, has restored or designed and gotten handmade under her supervision. As we look around the corner, observing each piece carefully we are taken by how perfectly they all blend with each other. “I’ve put together pieces overtime from many of my travels. For example these recliners are from Bangkok and the tiles were restored from a haveli, which was being broken down in Hyderabad. I remember standing with the contractor, trying to figure out how to fit all the pieces, as there were only a specific number of tiles. The tiles are faded and have a very rustic look, in fact there are even cracks on the steps, but I think that’s what adds character,” Faruqui smiles. Similarly we also discover a wooden, rocking chair, which belonged to Faruqui’s sister’s father-in-law. Her sister was throwing the chair away, but Faruqui decided to keep it and claims that it is where she feels most in control. She directs our attention towards an enchanting champa tree, which unfortunately isn’t in full bloom, but in its season she says it is a beautiful shade of maroon. We then ask Faruqui her favourite memory on this terrace to which she answers: “Behind the terrace there is a mulberry tree, and when my daughters were young, I’d give them baskets and they would pluck and eat from it. It reminds me of the good old days when my children would listen to me!” she laughs. We leave Faruqui’s charming home, mesmerised by the creativity and authenticity of her captivating space. It is personal, unique and a corner which truly is made with unconditional thought, love and care.
