WITH SALEEHA SHAH

FASHION

The uber cool artist and digital composer behind @saleehart breaks down her personal style. Learn the style secrets this fashionista always abides by! Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

APRIL 23-29 2017

74

How would you describe your body type? I have an hourglass body type, which means that my waist is proportionally smaller than my hips and chest. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My weight has fluctuated a lot over the last five years, but generally I have a tendency to gain weight on my hips, arms and chest. How has your style changed over the years? I think everyone goes through a multitude of phases but your core style remains the same. I went through an extreme hippy phase during college, and even though my style is now slightly more refined, I think I retain some of that carefree vibe even now. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My arms and obliques. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I don’t always dress according to my body type, but when I want to enhance my figure I like wearing things that cinch at the waist. Also, I try to avoid wearing sleeveless too often because I am conscious of my arms. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? You have to know your actual size. Ill-fitted clothes bother me a lot, whether they’re a size too big or too small. Also, overdoing labels kills a look and has never appealed to me. I think people need to be mindful of where they are and dress not only for the occasion, but also keep in mind the kind of environment they are in. You will see people wearing outfits that are not befitting of the occasion and that is a big fashion faux pas for me. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Silhouettes that cinch at the waist usually look the best on me. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing? Very short crop-tops and very short skirts. My body is not suited for these silhouettes so I stay away from them.

FEATURE

THE VAULT WITH MAHIN HUSSAIN

The creative designer and owner of Mahin Hussain Accessories talks about the most treasurable bags in her collection!

How and when did you become interested in handbags? I was a fresh graduate from an art college in 2002. I was armed with optimism, enthusiasm and the fervour essential for a new beginning. The desire to highlight issues in our society was strong. To me, handbags seemed to be an ideal medium to express my views. What are your favourite handbags? From my past collections: ‘The Fat Satchel’, ‘Lahore Lahore Aye Tote’, ‘Sequinned Flag Clutch’ and also the ‘Black Bird Love’. Is there any bag you are emotionally attached to and why? The Mahin Hussain ‘Sequinned Flag Clutch’. This is a bag that according to me should be worth more than the price tag. I designed this clutch in 2010 when there was great political instability. Many people had started migrating to foreign lands, there was uncertainty and spirits of the average Pakistani were low. To me, this clutch is a reminder of our national pride and an effort to instil hope and confidence in all of us. It has been carried by some great women in our country like the two-time Oscar winner, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and the Pakistani Representative to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I’m eagerly waiting for my summer 2017 bag collection to come out, just in time for Ramazan. I am a believer of legendary style icon, Iris Apfel’s philosophy: more is more, less is a bore. I have some exciting g coming g out soon! bags

Chopsticks and a Mongol shield on front entrance

s soon as we enter Kublai’s Kitchen, Islamabad’s trendiest new spot, we instantly feel refreshed by the tranquil lighting, the earthy décor and the pristine area. Though it is located in the centre of the city, the soothing ambience of the restaurant makes this spot feel like an oasis — away from the hustle and bustle. Lanterns in shades of green, orange and yellow are clustered on the ceiling. Lightwood chairs and tables with emerald green jute accents fi ll the space, while brick pillars add warmth to the space. We spot silmarillion-green French doors, which furthermore adds vivaciousness to the area. The glass doors on the front entrance feature enormous chopsticks and a Mongol shield.

Quirky details such as this, makes us think of the restaurant’s innovative owner, who welcomes us and ushers us in, showing us around her favourite new corner — a space which is a first for Pakistan in terms of concept and design. Intrigued by the creativity and design of the area, we jump right into our questions, eager to find out more about the execution of this corner! “My partners and I had a very clear idea of what we wanted, and asked the very professional team at M&K Construction to take the lead. Muzafar and Arsalan were our designers and we were all instantly on the same page. Our food at Kublai’s Kitchen is natural, organic yet simple and we wanted to reflect that in the design. You can see a lot of bamboo, natural rope, jute and lots of green — these elements reflect our ideology very well,” she claims.

APRIL 23-29 2017

We notice the cash counter made completely out of bamboo and are taken by the authentic Mongolian details translated in a contemporary way at the restaurant. Even the crockery at Kublai’s Kitchen is made of clay and adds to the natural theme at the eatery. We then glance over to see the interactive kitchen space that takes up a significant portion of the cosy restaurant. “Having a visually open kitchen was something we were determined to do, despite the many challenges. Our kitchen is 100 per cent open; notice how you can see through the window, all the way till the back? Customers can see their food being prepared, and enjoy the flames and flying veggies over the wok. As a brand, we aim to be transparent about our food quality, preparation methods and hygiene, and the open design facilitates this. Our main philosophy is that you, the customer, have complete control of the kitchen,” states Husain. Speaking of her most favourite design element, Husain directs our attention to the large comic wall in the outside seating area of the restaurant. “Our graphic designer is Numair Abbas of Numairical Studios, who is also a dear friend. He has designed all our graphic elements, including our mascot, menu and this comic story wall. We wanted to illustrate the story of Mongolian cuisine and how Kublai’s Kitchen came to be, and in keeping with the fun, casual vibe we have here, we decided to do that in comic form. The comic tells the story of Mongol camps, where the warriors would slice up their hunt

of the day and cook the meat over open flames on their upturned shields. This goes into the story of our inspiration to start the restaurant,” she narrates. We take a walk outside to get a closer look at the outdoor seating area. As we glance at the beautiful reflection of the vibrant lanterns on the large glass windows, our hostess talks to us about the challenges she faced in setting up this area. “We knew we had to develop the outdoor seating but we didn’t budget for it and we had an entire wall of AC’s that we had to hide. Initially we wanted a tall bamboo wall to hide this eyesore but that was quite expensive, so as a quick and easy alternative, I called my florist across the street and asked him to cover it with a wall of fresh greens. We did this as a low cost, temporary solution, intending to eventually replace this with the bamboo wall. But our customers have been enjoying this impromptu garden look so much that we have decided to keep it permanently,” she recalls laughingly. In closing, we ask our gracious host what inspired her to open Kublai’s Kitchen, to which she answers: “I have always loved the whole experience of food and started to cook in college. I never thought I would turn this hobby into a business, but my partners gave me that confidence and it just worked out perfectly. Having the right team to work with makes all the difference,” she smiles. We walk out of Kublai’s Kitchen feeling enriched, by the invigorating ambience of the restaurant and the charming spirit of our host.

FITNESS

THE NOTEPAD Ahson Naveed, UK-certifi fied owner and head trainer of AnFitness, jots down his six favourite exercise moves, which are sure to whip you into shape — take note! Deadlift Stand behind a grounded barbell. Bend your knees slightly, keeping your shins, back g and hips straight. Without bending your back, push your hips forward to lift the bar. From an upright position, push your hips back to lower the bar, bending your knees slightly. This move is a sure-shot way to stoke your body into a fat-burning furnace. Just make sure you start the move with a weight where you can manage 10 reps before gradually levelling up to the heart-pumping calorie-vaporising zone.

Barbell Lunge Choose an appropriate weight and place the barbell across your back. Step forward with your rightt foot and sink into a lunge, so both h legs are bent with your back kneee as close to the floor as possible. Drive yourself back up and repeat on the other side. One of the key elements of purging your fat stores is taking your body to the limit and 12-15 lunges on each leg will push your quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings to the absolute edge. It’ll hurt, but your super-charged metabolism will thank you later.

Burpees It hasn’t earned its nam me for nothing. Yes, burpees might leavve you in a m sweaty mess on the gym floor, but this brutal full-body exercise stresses every major muscle group to further spike the hormonal response you’re after. Very few workouts can prime your body for fat burning by working your abs, arms, chest, legs and shoulders all at once — and this is one of them!

Barbell Bench Press Lie back on a flat bench holding a barbell in the rack above you with a shoulder-width, overhand grip. Lift the bar off the rack and position it above your chest with arms fully extended. From the starting position, breathe in and lower the bar slowly until it skims the middle of your chest. Push the bar back to the starting position explosively as you breathe out. That’s one rep. This move sends your testosterone levels into blubber-burning overdrive by engaging your arms, chest and shoulders simultaneously. The more you push, the more calories you burn with this move.

Sit-ups Lie down on the floor with your knees bent and, if possible, hook your feet under something that will prevent them from moving. Place your hands behind your head and tense your core as you lift your torso up so your upper body forms a v-shape with your thighs. With control, lower back to the start position. Keeping it simple and fighting your bodyweight is the ideal challenge to burn fat.

Clean and Press Squat down with a straight back and grab the barbell with an overhand d grip. he In one swift movement, lift th barbell to your shoulders and d sink back down into a squat. Push up through your heels and extend your arms to press the barbell above your head. Safely lower your shoulders and drop back to the floor while maintaining a straight back. It works your entire body, it’s intense and (here’s the best bit) it optimises your hormones to detonate body fat. It’ll also push your lactic acid levels through the roof, reducing your oestrogen and better regulating your insulin. APRIL 23-29 2017
