WITH SOFIA BILGRAMI The devoted wife, m o t h e r, painter and designer b e h i n d the children and teens s c o u tu u re label, Sofetskiya, brr e a k s down her day for us.. F i n d o u t how this hardworkin ng, young entrepreneur juggles s her day!

7am: My children wake me up either byy tapppiing my face or by peeling open my eyelidds! We come out into our kitchen where we havve breakfast together. Breakfast is eggs, toast, and apple and thass with malai. banana porridge along with parath There is always coffee for me! The threee of us shower and change.

9am: I do an hour of home schooling wiith my children, after which we practice yoga and do some stretches. Then it’s time for two or three stories, sensory activities, free play and muusic!

10am: It’s gym time! I have the most accoommoda d ting personal trainer who comes home and does strength training with me. He even holds my daughter if she’s getting cranky whhilee I’m in between sets.

11am: Out to the workshop it is! This time is usually spent compiling the week’s incoming ordeers. It involves a lot of paintwork and carpentry. My children have the benefifit of being close by and my soon loves to make his own little creations while he seess me work. APRIL 30-MAY 6 2017

50

1pm: Lunchtime! My children and I all eat together. It’s really important to me to know what they’re eating and for our routine to remain consistent. Even if by the end of it all, the three of us are covered in food!

1:30pm: Back to the workshop. Everything I do is handmade which really does take a lot of focused time. I usually come here in the evening to write receipts and dispatch orders to clients.

5pm: It’s dinner time and bedtime (for the children). We talk about our day and all the fun things we created. Since the children don’t nap during the day they’re pretty tired by this time. We all go in for a shower as we tend to get messy at the workshop — all covered in dirt and wood shavings. It’s really more fun than it sounds — believe me! My husband and I both put the children to bed by 6pm.

6pm: I wrap up things in the workshop and chalk out the next days’ plan of action. I usually then go onto responding to all inquiries, slot in orders for the upcoming week and schedule important meetings.

8pm: Now I spend time with my husband. We cook meals together and talk about our plans and our dreams. We’re a really ambitious couple who work in two completely different fields so there’s always a lot to talk about.

10pm: I make my son his ‘in case of emergency’ milk bottle and put it by our bed, yes I co-sleep with two babies under the age of three! I then message my parents or my brother to touch base and tell them any news. I miss them so much because they live so far away. Then I brush my teeth and squeeze myself in between two little babies who I love more than anything in the world!

10:30pm: I’m dreaming...and feeding my nine-month-old baby while dreaming. 51

THE VAULT WITH OMAR! R!UL HAQ R! The founder and curator at Treasure Trove unlocks his vault to showcase his breathtaking art collection

How and when did your interest in art develop? I’ve always been attracted to art. I took a few courses in Art History during my undergraduate studies at Clark University and started collecting art shortly after graduating. I frequently visited art galleries in all the cities I lived in: Boston, Washington DC, London and Islamabad. However it wasn’t until a few years ago, after I moved to Dubai, that I realised I could make a contribution to the local art scene there. My close friends who took a leap of faith when they gave up stable jobs to pursue their passions also motivated me. I took a major risk giving up an exciting, lucrative job at a top advertising firm to pursue my passion — and so far it has been an amazing journey. What are your favourite works of art? Personally, my favourite works of art include a Saeed Akhter, Komail Aijazuddin and Scheherazade Junejo, which I stare at while working from my living room in Dubai every single day of the week. Recently, I have also become obsessed with Ifran Yavru (from Turkey) and Houma Sayed (from Syria). Their work is phenomenal. Where did you get them? Every piece has a story, but let’s just say that I have been lucky enough to get each and every piece directly from the artist. Is there any artwork you are emotionally attached to and why? My grandfather, General Rahimuddin Khan had tea with the legendary Gulgee one morning. The next day, Gulgee returned unannounced and surprised my grandfather with a stunning portrait he had made of him. To say that I am emotionally attached

to that piece would be an understatement. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I’m fascinated with African and Oriental art. African art especially, but because of my limited travel to Africa and the Far East, I haven’t been able to immerse myself in the role art plays in their social fabric. I would like to be able to study art from other such continents more closely and acquire it for my clients. Another priority is reaching out to emerging artists from our art schools. I’ve had a great experience working with some previously unknown artists and would like to do more of that.

The creative director of NFK Photography breaks down her incredible style. Find out all the challenges she faces in dressing her body type and which rules, from her fashion rulebook, she always abides by Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

be bold and geometric, or quirky and fun. I like my shoes and bags to be the on-trend statement-making element in my outfit. A statement bag paired with a classic black or white top, skinnies and some beautiful heels is my go-to. How do you dress according to your body type and which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think it’s important to balance your proportions when dressing for your body type, therefore I have a couple of personal dos and don’ts when it comes to what I think works for me. I like to wear tops that accentuate the length of my torso and lowers that are more tapered and fitted. Neither crop-tops nor culottes suit me, as they cut my torso or lower half off abruptly, and make me look shorter than I am. Also if I am wearing wide-leg pants, they have to be touching the ground as it gives me more length and creates a balance. However, getting dressed isn’t always about body type for me. A lot has to do with comfort and my mood in that moment. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I find it jarring when people wear too many statement pieces all at once without thinking about whether they actually work together. What is the one piece of clothing you shy away from wearing and why? That’s an easy question, a swimsuit. I definitely need to hit the gym first!

DÉCOR

THE NOTEPAD Sara Chapra, the talented event designer and director at CKO Events, jots down the seven essentials you need to host a fabulous event! Photography and videography A wedding photographer is as important as the event itself. A wedding is only one day but the photographs last forever, so it is imperative that one invests in a good photographer because he holds the key to capturing every precious moment. There are some amazing videographers who have changed the game. Their intelligent editing focuses on the most dramatic elements, rather than boring you to death with endless hours of footage. It makes every couple feel like a movie star.

Décor and props I believe in authenticity. If one wants to create a fairytale wedding then one has to use the right ingredients. That’s why I like to focus on beautiful furniture like lounges, tables, chairs, cushions and other decorative pieces. All the pieces tell a story and allow you to transport your guests into a fairytale. I like to also focus on one big statement piece. I think a piece that is dramatic and larger-than-life makes for an unforgettable design element.

Music and entertainment Whether you fly in a violinist or use a local talent, music is essential in creating a magical evening. The last thing you want is the deafening sound of all your guests chitchatting. Good music can really add value to your wedding. A wedding is all about tantalising the senses, and sound, sight, taste is all a part of it.

67

APRIL 30-MAY 6 2017

Flowers and centrepieces Florals and candles are the most essential feature of a wedding. Flowers are very expensive nowadays and one must come up with creative ways to get maximum mileage for your buck. Weddings and flowers go together like carrots and peas. Candles and candelabras are a very clever way of adding drama to your tablescapes without costing too much, and the effect is magical.

Food and desserts Without good food, your guests feel like they have been robbed or cheated. A lot of amazing caterers have come on the scene creating extraordinary customised menus, which were not seen seven or eight years ago. Whether it’s Thai, Japanese, Italian, French, Indian, Arabic or Pakistani cuisine, the sky is the limit in terms of menu selection!

Lighting Lighting can make or break your wedding. Sometimes you may design the perfect wedding but if your lighting is insufficient or venue is poorly lit then most likely you will compromise your overall ambiance. Lighting is meant to enhance your design and décor so if you neglect this essential element of design, the results can be catastrophic.

Venue A beautiful venue is probably the most important aspect of a wedding and can literally lend itself to 50 per cent of your ambiance. I always tell my clients that if you want a wedding on a budget then choose a beautiful garden as one can do wonders with lighting and keep costs down considerably.

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY WITH MAHVISH HASAN AND AMINAH TARIQ

Mahvish Hasan, CEO at Mahvish Hasan Salon, and her sister Aminah Tariq, blogger at Amo and the City as well as make-up artist at Mahvish Hasan Salon, tell us all about the bond they share! From sneaking out late at night to grab dessert, to sharing mutual love for food and fashion, to counting on each other for just about anything — they talk about it all!

What is your first memory of each other? Mahvish: My first ever memory of her is when she was a baby; I hid her under the bed and replaced her with a doll only to give my mother some rest. Aminah: My first memory of her is when she surprised me with rabbits on my sixth birthday. She had to hide them in her bathroom for an entire week, just so our mother wouldn’t find out! What is the craziest thing you have done together? Mahvish: When we sneaked the car out late at night to grab a bite of dessert. Aminah: When I was 13 years old, I had her give me a haircut at 3am just because we were bored. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Mahvish: For not studying. Aminah: For missing school — I always overslept. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Mahvish: I love her collection of scarves. The Hermès one she has is my favourite. Aminah: I love her collection of shoes! But currently I have my eyes on her sleek, black dress that somehow makes me look super-thin. APRIL 30-MAY 6 2017

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Mahvish: I would stop procrastinating. Aminah: I would reorganise her phone. All the apps, the contacts and the photos! What is the one thing you love about your sister? Mahvish: I love how she’s always there for me. She has a positive energy that always lightens up the room and I admire her for it. Aminah: She never says no to me. Anytime I’ve asked her for anything, she always says yes. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Mahvish: She knows I have the biggest sweet tooth, so she sends over dessert, which instantly resolves our fight. Aminah: I’m usually the first one to apologise so I bombard her with emotional messages, which leaves her with no option but to reply! What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too? Mahvish: She sings really well. Aminah: She is a pro at detecting liars! Sometimes it amazes me how she can always tell who is lying. Describe your sister in three words: Mahvish: Forgiving, optimistic and exuberant. Aminah: Generous, passionate and an excellent multi-tasker. Whether it’s work or her personal life she always manages to keep a good balance. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Mahvish: Just like Cinderella she is also a daydreamer. Aminah: She reminds me of Anne Hathaway’s character, Jules Ostin, from The Intern. How are your personalities similar? Mahvish: We think alike in most situations. Aminah: We have the same taste in most things like fashion and food. Our concept of fun is also very similar. I can’t live without my sister because… Mahvish: We are like a jigsaw puzzle, always completing each other’s sentences and thoughts. Aminah: She is my go-to person for advice on anything, so I can’t really function without her.

ahra Abbas Jameel’s home is a beautiful sanctuary on a bustling Karachi street. Her lush green garden featuring fl ora and fauna in all shapes, sizes and colours, greet us before we enter the picturesque home. We enter through an intricately detailed large wooden and glass door. Large fl oor-toceiling windows allow us to admire the magnifi fi cent garden and serene pool area as we walk over to Jameel’s favourite space — her home theatre. Our graceful host warmly greets us, insisting on some refreshments as we sit down to discuss her truly remarkable corner. Living in a house so beautiful, one might have a difficult time choosing their favourite spot, however, Jameel articulately answers: “Well, this is my favourite area as it is a home away from home for me. My children don’t come here and I feel this space is totally detached from the rest of the house. It’s my comfort zone.” The home theatre mostly uses shades of chocolate brown and warm taupe, however vibrant accents can be seen in the abstract artwork around the room. What truly stuns us is the magnificent view of the large pool through a floor-to-ceiling Model cars

window. This view brings the whole room together, adding light, colour, landscape and splendour. The dimly lit space is kept in pristine condition, the leather sofas are both comfortable and in stylistic harmony with the calming ambience. A large TV occupies the wall in front of us, underneath which model cars are artfully placed on a wooden built-in unit. A grey and white throw blanket is perfectly draped on a white leather sofa, in front of which a glass and dark-metal coffee table is positioned. Candles, coffee table books and vibrant décor pieces on the coffee table add colour to the room, which rests underneath an intricate beige rug. These small details add a sense of warmth to the area, as they indicate Jameel and her family’s interests and style. Seeing how impeccably everything is placed, we ask our host how often this room is used. She chuckles: “Actually I use this room pretty much everyday! I’ll watch a movie, browse on my laptop or just read a good book. It’s just such a comfortable spot.” Jameel shares that while she has created countless memories in the home theatre, her favourite item in this room happens to be one of the model cars. “It’s actually my Bugatti Chiron piece which I bought at the Geneva Motor Show. Though I think my husband would say his favourite piece is his painting,” she states. Wondering how big a part Jameel was in putting this marvellous space together, we pose the question: “Well, Yoca did the interiors for the area, but my husband and I did all the furniture. We were pretty hands on!” she explains. As we begin to make our way out, we take one final look around the home theatre. This is a space, which is both glorious in it’s aesthetic and calming in its mood. Jameel strikes the perfect balance in her favourite corner and we leave impressed by her ability to do so in such an effortless manner.
