Unforgettable looks of the week!

THE CUT

FASHION

Hajra Sami Hajra looks oh-so-pretty in a yellow, gota embroidered kameez with a red ijaar. By keeping the rest of her look simple and adding a classic pop of red on her lips her look surely is unforgettable!

Daneese Ali Daneese keeps it trendy in a maroon, off-shoulder choli paired with a worked lengha. We love the way she contrasts her silhouette with an embroidered shawl.

APRIL 9-15 2017

46

Anaam Ayub Anaam proves that you don’t have to show skin to turn up the heat! Her ivory and gold Sanam Chaudhri ensemble paired with statement earrings and an embroidered stole is both unique and classic. By tying her hair back she definitely takes her look up a notch!

47

APRIL 9-15 2017

Alisha Hashmi Mandviwalla Alisha steals the show in an embellished, pink lengha, with a trendy, cut-off sleeves choli by Mina Hasan. Her ensemble is the perfect combination of contemporary aesthetics mixed with eastern sensibilities — we love that!

Mishal Asad Mishal always keeps it understated and elegant and we love her for it! Here she wears a silver, high-low shirt with matching pants. To accessorise, she simply opts for a pair of diamond earrings.

LIFESTYLE

TOSS UP

WITH SHANIERA AKRAM

The wife of cricket legend Wasim Akram, a humanitarian for her foundation, a passionate activist and a full-time mother of three, takes time out to play a round of our Toss Up. Find out her biggest phobias, which food items she barely touches and what she really thinks about living in Karachi APRIL 9-15 2017

50

What is the best thing that happened to you last year? We celebrated Wasim’s 50th birthday in Thailand with some close friends and my parents. It was one of the best holidays and a very happy occasion.

What is your biggest phobia? I’m Australian so definitely spiders, snakes and sharks. All three are killers where I come from. What is your favourite country to visit? Australia. I still haven’t seen all of it — it’s so big and raw. It’s a land of adventure and everybody is so friendly. I also want to go back to Greece someday.

Share a crazy fan story: The fact that I have fans is crazy enough for me. Wasim has a few though! What is your favourite exercise? I love walking. Wherever I am in the world I will find a walking track and walk or run. I’ll run on a mountain in South Africa, under the Sydney Opera House in Australia, in a forest in England, on the streets of Mumbai or the beaches of Bali. It’s my thing! What is your idea of the perfect holiday? Any family holiday is the best. We went to Italy with the boys before Aiyla was born and that trip was so much fun. I have been going to Bali every year since I was 10 years old. I even have a villa in Seminyak which is very special to me.

What is the last thing you do before you go to bed? Tell my husband I love him.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would it be called? You will have to wait and see! What is the best activity on a rainy day? It never rains in Karachi! But if it did, it would have to be ‘One Smart Fella He Felt Smart’! Try saying that 10 times in a row with a group of people. It’s a hilarious game and my kids love it.

What are you most excited about in life right now? My foundation! The Akram Foundation is doing such good work at the moment and we just penned out a huge project that we are excited about starting soon.

Who is the one person you’d love to have coffee with? Anyone really, as long as it’s Melbourne coffee. What is your favourite dessert? Anything with chocolate.

Describe living in Karachi: It’s hot, it’s fast, the food is great, the people are beautiful, but sometimes, it breaks my heart. What is your favourite food? Everything I don’t eat, so pasta, bread, rice and noodles! I love carbs, but I hardly ever eat them. What is your spirit animal? A blue bird. If you had one superpower, what would you want it be? To somehow heal the world.

51

APRIL 9-15 2017

What is your favourite movie of all-time? I’m pretty old school, so The Bridges of Madison County, which is very sentimental to me, Pretty Woman and A League Of Their Own, which my sister and I used to watch together all the time. What is currently your favourite TV show? I’m currently watching and loving Vikings but I’m definitely a Game Of Thrones girl.

What is a recent hobby you’ve picked up? Planning the future. Choose an alternate career for yourself: I’d love to study Nutrition or get a Bachelors of Science in Dietetics. It’s very fascinating to me. I think everything is linked to the food we eat. As they say, you are what you eat!

TRAVEL

By Manal Waqi

If you’re looking for a peaceful destination to catch up on some R&R, then look no further than one of Switzerland’s most prestigious hotels, Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, Interlaken. Tucked away in the beautiful Alpine landscape, this resort is perfect to complete personal rejuvenation Getting Comfortable Recommended: The ‘Bel Air Suites’ at Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. Situated in the Bernese highlands, the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is one of the most prestigious destinations in the area. For those seeking a complete health revitalisation, the ‘Bel Air Suites’ are simply perfect! This spacious suite, with a large terrace overlooking the resort’s premise, ensures that you will be able to fully immerse into the lifestyle changing programs, which are neither a boot-camp, nor a self-indulgent pampering fix, but rather a holistic approach to life. APRIL 9-15 2017

54

The Art Of Well-Being Recommended: The ‘Anti-Stress Signature Massage’ at Spa Nescens. The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is home to the highly acclaimed Spa Nescens, which brings together scientific and medical expertise to enhance well-being and health. With a special emphasis on the ‘Better-Ageing Program’, the plan is to decrease stress, strengthen inner dynamism and capture youthful energy. With a choice of a four-day, seven-day or a customised selection, the program is fully adaptable to match your fitness levels. The treatment begins with a full health and body analysis, followed by personalised training, consultation with nutritionists, as well as a physiotherapist and an osteopath if needed. This is then complemented by a selection of facials and massages, aimed at relaxing the muscles and relieving the body of any tension. With several activities planned, the program keeps visitors busy and raring to go.

Blissful Bites Recommended: The Spa Bistro and La Terrase at VictoriaJungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. Just like the programs, the diet at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is completely personalised. Special dietary requirements are incorporated into all meals and the fully customised mini-bar in your suite. When visitors are not indulging in a massage, they can be spotted energising themselves at the Spa Bistro, which offers a delectable variety of fresh salads, relaxing teas and power-packed juices. Even the elegant La Terrase restaurant incorporates the dietary customisations, offering a special, fluffy chocolate soufflé — divine in taste, yet completely healthy.

A Magical Interruption Recommended: Jung-Frau Mountain. If you get some time off from the incredible R&R program, you can explore the breathtaking sights around Interlaken. From visiting the peaks of the majestic Jung-Frau Mountain, to sailing on one of the serene lakes in the region, Interlaken is home to many activities, which will make you feel at one with nature.

The Bollywood Biggie Recommended: ‘Yash Chopra Suite’ at Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. Besides being an immensely beautiful area, the region is also synonymous with its Bollywood ties. Film maven Yash Chopra directed many movies in Interlaken, from Chandni to Daar. Whilst discovering the various filmy locations, you might also come across a special statue dedicated to the filmmaker himself, for all the tourism he has brought to the area. What’s even more special is the ‘Yash Chopra Suite’ located at the Victoria-Jungfrau, which celebrates the Bollywood romance Veer-Zaara.

FEATURE

THE VAULT WITH MOHAMMAD MOHSIN

The talented owner and jeweller behind Mirza Mohammad Suleman Jewellers — since 1947, unlocks his intriguing vault. Learn more about his antique fine jewellery pieces and some of his artistic favourites!

How and when did you get interested in jewellery? I have been interested in design ever since I was a child. I enjoyed art and jewellery design, and luckily for me, we have a family jewellery business. It’s been 70 years since my family started the jewellery business — I’m the fourth generation! I grew up watching my grandfather and father working in the industry, which is how my interest grew. While I was in school, whenever I would be off for summer break, I would come into the shop and learn jewellery making. I would sit with the karighaar’s, and learn moti perona. My father believed that I had to learn every aspect of jewellery and the making of it to be in the business, and I enjoyed every step of it. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? I enjoy all kinds of jewellery, both classic and unique. My interest is in precious pieces as we basically deal in diamonds, polki and other precious coloured stones such as rubies, emeralds and pearls. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? I am extremely attached to these two bangles from my mother’s jewellery collection. My dadi gave them to her on her moo dekhai, and told her to give one to my wife, and one to my brother’s wife. These bangles have been passed down through the generations and are about 100 years old. My par dadi gave it to my dadi, and my dadi gave it to my mother because she was the first daughter-in-law in the house. They are plain gold, with large polki pieces in them.

63

APRIL 9-15 2017

Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces: I’ll share the story behind my diamond pinky ring. It’s set in a very simple design. It has four 30-pointer diamonds in it. Even though I am in the business, I was never allowed to take anything for free; I had to work for everything. So I first saved up money to buy each diamond myself by working very hard for two years. Finally, years later, I got the ring made. I have worn that ring quite a bit, and would like to pass it down to my daughter on her wedding. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? Filigree work is having its moment right now, and I want to design more jewellery in that style. I have always believed in fine craftsmanship and I look forward to working on more delicately handcrafted designs.

Style Anatomy WITH MEHRYN TIWANA

The super-savvy blogger and stylist breaks down her style for us. Learn how to make an uber-chic fashion statement from the stylista herself Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage APRIL 9-15 2017

64

How would you describe your body type? I would say I’m slim and petite. Has your body type changed over the last five years? It hasn’t really changed much and I hope it never does! How has your style changed over the years? I don’t think my style has changed much either. I have always enjoyed fashion and dressing up. I like to stand out and look classy in whatever I wear. I love to experiment with new looks but only to an extent — it has to look good! In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? I don’t have any troublesome areas in particular. I am very lucky that way. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I always wear what I am comfortable in and what looks classy but edgy. I am not a fan of wearing super-tight clothing as I find them uncomfortable. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? People follow trends blindly! They don’t care if it suits them or their body type, they insist on wearing it. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I like to think everything suits me. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? Leather pants! I just don’t like them. I feel like people are trying too hard when they wear them.

ONE PIECE, THREE WAYS

M

aheen Karim’s black cape is heavily embellished with black embroidery, primarily using beads. The chiffon material makes the silhouette easy to wear and versatile. The collared cape is definitely an evening essential, and can completely transform the look of any outfit!

WITH MAHEEN KARIM

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Maha Ahmad Hussain Fashion Merchandiser, Sana Safinaz

I paired the cape with super-long, white flared pants and wore a white tank top underneath it. I figured all-white would be a nice contrast to the black cape. With the white tank top, it looked better when I wore it back-to-front, with the back having the slit. I wore my highest, platform, black patent leather Christian Louboutin heels and carried a Valentino ‘Rockstud’ flap bag with black sequence embroidery to keep my look formal. I completed the look with a pair of funky black and gold costume earrings. I gave myself a dark eye, something that I usually do for big, formal gatherings. I loosely curled my hair with tongs to give it a slightly wavy look. I’d definitely wear this outfit to a big dinner or somewhere formal. APRIL 9-15 2017

74

Maha Burney Creative Director, NFK Photography

I paired Maheen Karim’s cape with a long black dress from All Saints. The silhouette and length of the dress perfectly complements the cape — it almost looks like it came together! I turned the cape placing the opening at my shoulder so that it is asymmetrical, like the dress. I didn’t want the accessories to overpower the beautiful embellishment on the cape, so I went for my favourite diamante tops; they add just the right amount of sparkle. I chose a pair of gunmetal, snakeskin Christian Louboutin heels to pair with this outfit — it definitely needed a super high heel! For my make-up, I went for subtly glamorous, dark smoky eyes with a classic nude lip and soft waves in the hair. With the addition of the cape this outfit is perfect for a ball or a big party.

Alina Faruque Lawyer

I wore Maheen Karim’s sparkly, black sequinned cape over a black crop-top and black skinny jeans. I simply put the cape over my shoulders and left it unhooked. The outfit was accessorised with some gold jewellery, a printed McQueen clutch and a pair of super-high, peep-toe heels. A dark smoky eye and nude lips completed my look. This outfit is superversatile and wearable for any formal occasion, as it can be dressed up or down to suit the setting.

PHOTOGRAPHY

THE NOTEPAD Get all the expert tips you need from the gorgeous model-cum-lawyer, Sana Ansari, as she jots down the six essential steps to take the perfect picture!

In the limelight The first and most important thing about taking a picture is obviously lighting. You have to make sure that when you’re posing for a picture, you are facing the light. The light should not be behind you.

Lean back If the background of a picture is strange or has something indecent, like a toilet seat, the picture is definitely not Instagramworthy! Make sure you have a nice background and use a good frame.

Au natural I personally believe in less or no make-up. The more make-up, the less natural the picture will look!

Know your angles The angle in which the picture is being taken matters a lot! If taken from the top, the body or face will probably look deformed. If taken from the bottom, you are sure to look fat. A straight angle is always the safest.

Stand up taller Good body posture is imperative. Usually, I always stand a little angled as compared to full frontal and play around with my legs — over lap them or tilt one leg while resting on the heel of your foot.

Friends first A good relationship with your photographer will always come handy. That way you can ask him or her to take plenty of pictures of you, until you’re satisfied.

Lighten up A person’s expression really matters! If the picture is perfect but the expression on the face is dead, it kills the vibe of the photograph. So make sure to be lively or sultry — whatever works for you! APRIL 9-15 2017

THE CORNER

WITH FATEMAH RAWJI

The compassionate owner and exceptional pastry chef behind, From The Kitchen Of Fatemah Rawji, a nonprofit bakery, welcomes us to her most precious space — her kitchen! By Maha Rizvi

T

hough modern and majestic in its appearance, Fatemah Rawji’s home is warm, comfortable, and nurturing. As soon as we enter, we are warmly greeted by our hostess and taken straight into her favourite space — her kitchen! The contemporary kitchen is well-equipped with the finest home appliances and adorned with classic yet striking décor pieces, primarily in tones of white and grey. For a brief minute, we stand in awe, admiring the spectacular view from the large, glass windows in front of us. Conversely, adornments like the quirky magnets collected by Fatemah and her children from all over the world add character and a sense of cosiness to this space, which otherwise feels too glorious to be real.

After she graciously offers us some delicious homemade pizza and mini-cupcakes, we begin to discuss the space. “This is my favourite spot because I spend most of my time in the kitchen, I barely go anywhere else. My children are big foodies, and in fact my whole family and all my friends love to sit in this kitchen. Anyone who walks into the house first comes here and then goes elsewhere — it’s the most used space,” she says. Perceiving the significance Fatemah gives to her family and friends, we ask her to share some of her favourite memories created in the kitchen, and she sincerely answers: “My favourite memories are when my children’s friends come over. I’m always in here cooking up a storm for them! They are my biggest critics. They make me cook things till really late and they want it all freshly baked. I love doing that for them.” Speaking of her favourite items in the space, she states that while it’s hard to pick a favourite piece in this room, because everything she treasures is in here, perhaps the most cherished articles are her recipe books. We glance around the space and can’t help but admire the pristine white walls, the contemporary silver finishing, and the simple but charming décor pieces, artfully placed around the room. Enthralled, we ask our host who the creative mind behind the interior design was, to which she answers: “The interior was a joined venture between my cousin, a friend and I. I just renovated the whole place, and if I had it my way, the whole house would have been a kitchen,” she chuckles, “but this kitchen was made spacious especially for my work and me, and it’s the best I’ve ever had so that means a lot.” Speaking of her work, Fatemah explains that while her natural flair in the kitchen encouraged her to start the bakery, she began her business in order to give back to those in need. “Whatever I make from the bakery is completely donated. I started the business because I wanted to help those who don’t have big organisations or hospitals supporting them, and so many people have benefited from the money that I have earned. At the end of the month, I am truly at peace knowing that the money has been used for a good cause,” she says humbly. We leave Fatemah’s residence taken by the contemporary aesthetic, vivacious nature, and humble persona of our charming host.
