INTERVIEW
Hours After
with
Humna Raza
Humna is a dentist turned blogger with a huge following on social media. She not only runs her own blog but also has a YouTube channel where she discusses every day lessons. Her main aim is to spread positivity every step of the way. Read on find out all about her. 3
APRIL 19-25 2020
When was the first time you realised you wanted to become a blogger? This was back in April 2016 when I started to realise and understand the power of social media. I felt that the internet was lacking certain conversations and especially had nothing around positive thinking, I decided to take to social media and use it to spread positive ideas. Was the transition from being a full time dentist to blogger difficult? Not for me. I absolutely enjoyed the transition. Blogging was my creative outlet in the middle of all that dental stuff. It actually helped me perform better as a dental student as well because in my free time, I was working on the blog and being productive and creative and not wasting my time. The transition was a bit odd for some people around me though but I believe we are
more than just our careers and should always explore! What is the biggest misconception of blogging? I think people think it’s easy and wasteful. In reality it’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of learning, and skill building and it’s very rewarding. It’s a sole person brand doing its own shooting, editing, writing, holding meetings, partnerships, and of course sharing helpful knowledge with the world. And that’s what makes it rewarding. You also run a blog with your husband, tell us a bit about it? Yes, we started Already Grown Up for young millennial couples trying to figure out adulthood. There were too many channels about everything else but no how-to channel with a desi-pakistani context. We identified how we struggled
with so many little things and thought that’s probably how it is for several others and may be as we figure life out, we can help others do it too! What has been the most challenging project you’ve worked on? The most challenging project had to be a month long partnership with a leading pharmaceutical in Pakistan. Even though it was an awareness campaign around PCOS for women, The content was challenging, the creative work was challenging. The legal work and documentation was overwhelming. It required me to go through trainings, monitor response for 12 hours after each post, report back, and be aggressively on top of pharmacovigilance. It’s one of the best and most challenging projects I’ve done and I absolutely loved it. Probably my favourite as well.
Describe a typical day in your life? I am an early riser but since quarantine, it’s been a little later than normal. I make breakfast, I clean the house, I cook, and then I work pretty much all day on either my own blog, or Already Grown Up until late evening. After which I plan the next day, do some journaling and then relax with a movie or show! What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers? Aspiring bloggers should know that blogging is done with a purpose! Find something you’re truly passionate about, or have knowledge of so that you can share. Make sure your content adds value to the lives of people. People should follow you because of your credibility. If you don’t have a purpose, something to teach, value to add, or simply to entertain then you must wait it out till you do.

W is your biggest inspiration Who an why? and M biggest inspiration has to be My m mother. She’s a single woman my w has single handedly achieved who so much. She’s the epitome of an e empowered woman. T three skills to possess to Top r a successful blog? run 1 Writing skills. 1. 2. Basic photography and editing skills. 3. Creativity. Corona virus has (hopefully) temporarily altered our lives, how does it impact your work? Well, it has increased my work in terms of the amount of content I constantly need to put out there because I feel all of my followers are online all the time haha. But it has definitely affected my partnerships that have incredibly slowed because of the situation. So it’s like I’m working more, but not getting paid. In all honesty though, I’m enjoying it because my followers these days are so much more responsive. What advice and suggestions would you give to fellow blogge bloggers during such circumstances? To make sure that their content is either helpful or entertaining. Everyone is on their phones and they could be the source of positivity and hope in their followers’ lives. They must also make sure if they say anything Corona Virus related, it’s authentic and correct. And most importantly, whether they are talking about it or not, their work should remain s sensitive towards the circumstances. W What’s next for Humna Raza? If you asked me before COVID’19, I’d have a lo lot to say. But with the way things are, there is wa way too much uncertainty. Let’s just say that for now, all my plans are in the backseat and I’m taking it one day at a time. Trying to seize eac each day as it comes with a grateful heart and hop hope for a better future, inshAllah!

Keeping Healthy
During Covid-19
Good nutrition is crucial for health, particularly in times when the immune system might need to fight back. Limited access to fresh food may also mean you compromise on healthy eating and a balanced diet which can potentially lead to consumption of processed food, which tend to be high in fats, sugar and salts. Nonetheless with right ingredients in your diet can surely support good health. We asked nutritionist and CEO of Diet by Design, Sadia Salman how to keep the diet balance to get through these testing times.

Any super food to release stress especially during Covid-19? Foods can help tame stress in several ways. A bowl of warm oatmeal will boost levels of serotonin, a calming brain chemical. Other foods can cut levels of cortisol and adrenaline, stress hormones that take a toll on the body over time. The following foods can help: • Complex carbs like whole grain wheat also help. • Vitamin C helps lower cortisol levels. • Foods high in magnesium help as well. Like salmon, green vegetables and soy beans. • Black tea helps bring down cortisol levels. • Avocados reduce blood pressure and help with stress. • Low fat milk eases anxiety as well. What’s a healthy diet to boost immunity during this pandemic and otherwise? Immunity doesn’t come from foods full of fatty ingredients; It’s a big misconception that we will gain immunity from full fat dairy products and sweet halwas! It’s actually the opposite. Immunity is different from energy. So every food that gives you extra instant glucose/ energy will not make any difference in your immunity levels. The best foods for boosting immunity are these super foods. • Raw garlic • Fresh turmeric • Sunflower seeds • Dates and figs • Olives • Green vegetables • Beans and lentils • Bananas • Sunflower seeds, mustard seeds and chia seeds

What should you not eat if you’re trying to lose weight? Foods that you should avoid if you’re looking to lose weight are. • Unhealthy carbs like refined flour products, breads and pastas and bakery products. • Unhealthy oils like those with trans fats, butter and animal fats. • Sugar in all its forms, be it white, brown or artificial sweeteners. • Processed meats like sausages and meatloaf slices. Any super foods for weight loss, anxiety and skin health that you would recommend? There are many herbal supplements that aid with weight loss, anxiety and skin and hair health and anti ageing effects as well. African Hoodia, Korean Ginseng, Licorice, St. John’s Wort, Muira Pauma, Gotukola, Echinacea, Portobello Mushroom, Sunflower seed, Pumpkin seed, Sesame seed, Olive Leaf, Grape seed, Flax seed, Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary. Luckily we have been able to put them together in a miracle supplement called Thermogen Herbal fiber. It aids weight loss, enhances the metabolism, helps lower blood pressure, stabilizes sugar levels, reduces anxiety, works on skin and hair health with anti aging properties, balances the hormones and helps treat poly cystic ovaries.
LIFE STYLE
Sara Vazir Sara Vazir is a full time mum of two by day and a henna artist by night. Her passion for henna design evolved from a young age and has successfully turned her passion into her full time business. Sara’s henna is all the rage when it comes to brides and she loves to create special memories for all her clients. We speak to her about her passion for henna Tell us briefly about yourself and your passion for henna? I’m a full time mom of two by day, and a henna entrepreneur by night! Henna art has been my passion from a very young age, right back to when I used to watch my mom apply henna for brides. My first bridal henna was at the age of 11, when I tag teamed with my mum! So not only does the art of henna hold very fond memories for me, but it’s that warm feeling that motivates me to create special memories for all my clients.
How did you get into the business of henna designing? All through my school and university life, henna was always a hobby that earned me some extra pocket money. Doing henna for cultural events, public fairs, art bazaars in Hong Kong and later for music festivals in UK during university, henna always made me stay close to my roots & helped me spread awareness about our Pakistani culture which I find extremely beautiful. My friends used to joke about how I should quit studying and just turn henna into my full time APRIL 19-25 2020

career... little did I know I would actually turn that into reality one day! Lol ofcourse I did graduate, and go on to a full time job back in Hong Kong. But that just wasn’t enough. I continued applying henna, and this time for hi-end corporate clients such as Dolce & Gabbana, Steve Madden just to name a few. Soon henna kind of took over my life, so I quit my full time job, and turned my lifelong passion into a proper business...“Sara’s Henna” (isn’t that so creative?!) in 2009 in Hong Kong. I’ve never looked back since! We have teams of freelance henna artists in South east Asia, Middle East, and now in Pakistan. Where did you learn how to create such beautiful designs? Are you self taught? I’ve always been an artsy person and I find inspiration in the most mundane everyday things such as doors, antique objects, jewelry, textiles. Nature also plays a huge part in my designs; turning complex flowers

and leaves into intricate henna patterns. Apart from this, people and their stories inspire me. Each client, each bride brings along with her different emotions, different stories, different vibes. I use those as my inspiration in creating unique bespoke designs. I feel once I pick up a henna cone, the designs just appear according to the person I’m applying for: it’s the magic of henna! How popular is white henna among brides? So I actually started white henna due to my western brides’ requests. Back in Hong Kong, majority of my clientele were foreigners, who loved the art of henna, but weren’t too fond of the fading stain. For their wedding day, they would request for temporary henna tattoos. So I would put pure body paints in henna cones, and create jewel & lacey designs for them using white body paints to match with their wedding gowns. This proved to be a huge hit! However white henna only
gained in popularity and became a global trend once I applied it for Huda Beauty in Dubai in 2015... and it’s still trending! Is henna starting to gain popularity among nondesi brides at all? Oh majorly!! Henna has always appealed to the non-desi market, not just brides but women worldwide in general; even celebrities rock their henna such as Madonna, Beyoncé with her belly blessing, Katy Perry to name a few. Did you know they even have henna conferences all over the world?! I myself have attended one such conference in Los Angeles, hosted by non desis and attended by western women from all walks of life! Some of these women are the most incredible henna artists I’ve ever come across! But not to deviate from the question; yes henna is extremely popular for non desi brides! Describe a typical day in your life? My typical day in life has changed drastically since
I had kids! Back in my single days, my day would comprise of meetings, events, fashion shoots and all things henna related. Now however, my day consists of a very hectic routine of sending my daughter to school, doing house chores, cooking, getting my younger son ready and fed, picking my daughter from school. Lunch, shower, naptime followed by some outdoor play and home work time in the evenings. I only start my henna work and all business related things once I put them to sleep at night. By midnight I get onto my emails, then around 1am I start mixing henna, rolling cones and getting the supply part of it sorted. I usually work till around 3am, and on dispatch nights till around 5am. Pray and hit the bed. Ready for the alarm at 7am and off we go again! Each day brings its own surprises and mishaps! The days I have bridal bookings my husband takes a day off work and stays home with the kids so that I can go to work!
How do you manage a busy schedule, being a mum and managing the social media for your brand? By giving up on sleep! Lol so far that’s the only way I do it. I use an app called Preview for my Instagram, where I create a grid for the entire week and I know exactly what I want to post. So every day at one particular time, I just post that. The rest of it all happens in the late hours of the night! What are the future plans for Sara’s Henna? It’s been my dream to have my very own Sara’s Henna studio in karachi. In fact to have branches all over Pakistan one day InshAllah. I am currently
working towards making Sara’s Henna a household brand name. And once that happens I would like to open a studio; the first of its kind in Karachi. My aim is to have it before the end of 2021! In the meantime, I want to continue raising awareness and spreading the love of natural henna in Pakistan, and create that much needed switch between chemical henna and natural henna! Advice for aspiring artists wanting to get into this field? Never think this profession any less worthy than other more streamline professions. I’ve been able to travel all over the world thanks to my henna
art as well as meet some of the most incredible people! So you can too! Henna art is an extremely respected profession, but you have to be confident in your art and your skills. If you respect your art and your time, others will too! Secondly Practice. Practice your skill every single day and don’t be afraid to share both your failures and your success. Make social media your friend! Lastly don’t sell yourself short! Charge what you’re worth, and others will find you worthy too. You must meet all sorts of brides! Advice or tips for any brides to be? The biggest advice I can give brides to be is: please
give your bridal henna importance and your artist respect. Allocate a certain number of hours for your henna application in the comfort of your room and your pjs and don’t commit to anything else in that time. Just like a make-up artist requires complete concentration and a lot of time just for one events’ look, a henna artist requires dedicated time to do their job well! You are after all paying them to do a good job! Also: please be kind to your skin and health and use natural henna!! You don’t want to remember your big day by the ugly henna scar you received using lethal chemical cones!

Stay Positive Happy during
Covid-19
Coronavirus pandemic is leading people to remain confined to their homes which is causing more anxiety and uncertainty. It can be hard not to feel overwhelmed by the state of the world at the moment where borders are shut and people are facing extreme economic instability. But even in times of stress and uncertainty, one can take proactive steps to lift your mood. We asked Ayesha who is an energy and meditation coach as well as a co founder of Singapore-based The Happiness Ftt to share some tips how to remain positive, happy and calm during these trying times.
In this time of stress and uncertainty what proactive steps can we take to lift our mood? During times like these one needs to keep moving forward by maintaining some form of structure, be it in the form of regular exercise (at home exercising or walking by yourself) or cooking, baking or maybe finishing up a project within your home. Wake up ay doing each morning and get dressed and then go about your day one thing at a time. And do listen to some music. What advice can you give to feel less overwhelmed and stressed? Let all planning and control go out the window. Live by the hour. Enjoy the little things. Stay connected with all your y loved ones. And please think good thoughts. Tha That means not bombarding yourself with news at a all times. We all know what the situation is. Kee Keep up to date but do not stay in that space. Try find finding positives around you - there are also some very endearing and compassionate incidents being rep reported. They always leave me with a big smile and a warm, happy heart. Does meditation work for everyone - if not what is the substitute? en you “Prayer is when you ask from God, Meditation is when th our listen to God” Meditation is all about connecting with ctice one breath and going within to “listen” With regular practice begins to gradually calm the mind , connect within and be in the flow. But yes consistency will be the key. The more you do APRIL 19-25 2020

it, the easier it becomes. But if you feel meditation is not for you then maybe try and just start with breathing exercises for five minutes and then move up to 10 minutes then 15 and 20. Or just practice more mindful in everyday basic activities. Like while having a cup of tea you may want to use all your senses and be more aware of the present moment. How does breathing elevate your physical and mental being and change your circumstances Most people take half, shallow breaths. Without realising that they are not taking a complete breath which goes from your nose to your abdomen and then back out, exhale. Once you start breathing properly and fully, oxygen starts to reach all the organs, cells of your body not just certain parts. That itself helps with physically and mental health. Plus you will realise that in time you start becoming more aware and mindful of each moment. This brings a lot of gratitude. Some people are obsessing over staying positive and happy - can it lead to reverse effect? Yes I feel it does. It’s not about always trying, putting in so much effort to be happy. That’s not how it works. It comes from within very naturally only after you start acknowledging your other emotions. This by the way may be far from happy. If we cover up feelings that need to be felt and then slowly released over time, we just unknowingly start creating a monster inside us which sooner or later will raise its head, scaring yourself and everyone around us. What is a core ingredient in the recipe of successful coping in a crisis. First of all acknowledging that it is a stressful situation however you are not alone in this particular crisis. The entire world is going through and feeling a lot of what you are feeling. Understand that no situation remains the same. This time too shall pass. The biggest coping ingredient here is having gratitude. Just take a moment and write three things you are grateful for. You will see how instantly your mood will shift to that of hope and positivity.

What is your signature look this summer? I feel like experimenting with a more gender neutral style and coordinated looks. A three piece blazer, vest and trouser set, utility pants, relaxed fit sweatshirts and jackets, ankle high socks and sneakers with pops of color and femininity.

What item on your wish list is worth the splurge? Chanel flap bag with top handle. I feel like it has the classic look but with a modern touch and would look amazing in a fun coloor. Plus a chanel bag never goes out of style!

Describe your signature style? I dress according to my mood which can vary between playful chic, feminine and sometimes eccentric. I love mixing prints, patterns and color and incorporating a modern vintage vibe by adding statement pieces like oversized dad frames, chunky gold jewellery or fun bags in geometrical shapes to help add some character.
