While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage APRIL 28-MAY 4 2019

How has your style changed over the years? I feel a couple of years ago it was pretty basic and I mostly stuck to classics, now I’m more experimental and will buy anything quirky or fun even if my husband is sceptical. Which trends will you sport this summer? My favourite trend this summer is the pop of neon in everything, from high street to luxury brands. I’ve bought a whole tonne of them which I can’t wait to wear this summer. When in doubt, where do you look for style inspiration? I’ve been in love with Olivia Palermo since the first time her show “The City” aired in 2008! I’ve been obsessed with her beauty and I love her style. It’s been more than a decade but I still take inspiration from her! Your favourite shopping destination? My favourite shopping destination will always be London no matter how cliché it sounds, it’s the truth. Many people tell me how they love shopping in Dubai or that America has the best shopping but I personally don’t agree at all. Your latest splurge? My latest splurge was a fur jacket. What is one common mistake people make while dressing? I personally believe there’s no wrong or right in fashion, if you can carry it well and make it look good then by all means you should wear it. There’s only one thing that I absolutely can’t bear and that’s ill fitted jeans. The least one can do is make sure their skinny jeans are skinny. Two summer essentials you can’t leave your house without? I’m not a sort of girl who has face mists, mini fans and sunglasses in her bag at all times. In fact I don’t even carry a bag to begin with when running errands or going out for a quick bite. One wallet and lipstick is all I need. Be it summer or winter. Four must-have items one needs in their closet at all times? I think the four must-have items one needs in their closet are a good pair of skinny jeans, a white casual t-shirt, one pair of black pants and a comfy sweatshirt What is your signature style? I would like to believe that my style is quite versatile as I wear whatever I like from wherever I like. I don’t choose my clothes according to my style, I wear whatever I like and try to make it my style.

37

APRIL 28-MAY 4 2019

Your favourite designer? My favourite local designer is Bunto Kazmi, so much so that I was a Bunto bride on all my major events and I loved it irrespective of the fact that many people told me to wear a different designer every day. My international favourite designer isn’t one but I have two favourites, Chanel and Hermes and I have most of my bags and shoes from these two designers. What is the easiest way to revamp your wardrobe without breaking the bank? I think the easiest way to change your wardrobe is by buying pants of different colours and kinds. Leather pants, flared pants, culottes, cigarette pants are all the different kinds of pants one can buy easily from Zara and instantly revamp their wardrobes without going too heavy on their pocket. I’m very big on pants and I feel a good pair can quickly up lift an entire outfit.

LIFE STYLE

With

GreyScale

Atique Tajammal and Sana Shaikh, hailing from completely different professional backgrounds came together to introduce a brand new line of concrete home dĂŠcor. Atique being a telecom engineer and Sana with a degree in fashion design came up with an idea that is now known as GreyScale. Tiny planters with air purifying plants, concrete pots of various sizes, ashtrays, wall clocks and lamps by GreyScale add character and minimalistic modern style to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Hand painted concrete pots stand out in the collection. Find out how these two ventured into the world of art, and the new projects they are working on APRIL 28-MAY 4 2019

spooky and chic at the same time. GreyScale showcased at Daachi exhibition, what kind of feedback did you receive? It was remarkable! The response we received was way better than what we expected. More than that, it was great to see people of all ages coming up to us and showing deep interest in our products. What kind of products do you have in your collection? Our product range includes indoor and outdoor concrete pots and planters of various sizes and designs. Apart from these we also have ashtrays, wall clocks, table lamps, office desk organisers and stationary holders. Do you plan on expanding your product range? At GreyScale, we always have this on-going process of experimentation to come up with

What inspired you to come up with the idea of GreyScale? It all started when we were looking for plants and planters for our home. Unfortunately, all we could find were bulky cement and clay planters. Our quest to find the right kind of planters led us to creating one ourselves with the materials that we have been mastering as a company for the last three decades. That is when we realised, that the possibilities in creating such products were endless. What is the best selling piece from your collection? That would be our skull planters. That one is the most sought after product in our range. They are

44

new products. Expanding our product range is definitely on the cards. If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would it be? We would love to collaborate and learn from David Umemoto, an artist from Quebec. He can easily pass as the king of concrete. He excels at concrete miniatures and art. His work speaks volumes! What is the most indispensable item in your studio? If you visit our studio, the first thing you will notice is that we have countless air purifying plants. Other than that, there’s an unlimited supply of coffee and biscuits at all times! What is the process of creating a single piece of art at GreyScale? The whole process of creating a single product is quite lengthy and has to be carried out with great care. The concrete has to

be mixed with perfect proportions of sand, cement and water. Once that is done, we hand-pour it into the moulds and let it sit for 24 hours. The product is then separated from the moulds and cured before it hits the racks. What is your favourite piece from the collection and why? Every piece we create is our favourite. It is hard to choose just one, but if we have to choose the best, it would be the planters from our ribbed series. The reason being that it instantly adds pizazz to anywhere it is placed. What is the best thing about being an artist? Freedom of expression! When an artist creates something, they put their hearts into it hence expressing their inner most thoughts and that feeling in itself is priceless. What has been the most memorable moment in your professional journey? It has been 11 months since we launched GreyScale, but there have been countless memorable moments throughout this journey. The best one so far has to be creating our first planter, which turned out to be just perfect. We were ecstatic!

What do you enjoy the most while working on your art pieces? Creating a product from a scratch is a very exciting process. It’s astounding how the process starts with just a concept, slowly transitioning into reality. We get immense joy when a product turns out to be perfect, then displayed on the racks and is loved by our clients. What is in store for GreyScale in the future? GreyScale has a lot in the pipeline. Some exciting collaborations, new products such as vertical wall gardens, candles, ceiling lights and furniture will be added to our list of products. Also, a first of its kind concrete store is on the cards!

Speaking of the forthcoming season, Safina stated “I have always been a fan of Battle of the Bands and I am extremely excited to be here.”

Sajal Aly slammed for endorsing fairness cream Promoting the idea of bleaching one’s face to look ‘prettier’ doesn’t sit well with today’s youth and so it shouldn’t. Sajal Ali has been in hot waters for appearing in a TVC for a fairness cream. The ‘after’ image of Sajal is evidently much lighter than the ‘before’, as the product promises to create a lightning glow ‘from within’. Twitter was quick to slam the starlet for promoting the product. Some Twitter users expressed their disappointment while others called out the brand for promoting colourism.

Saboor Aly shuts down suicide rumours Social media has been abuzz with rumours regarding actor Saboor Aly. Numerous people have been speculating that the starlet tried to take her own life. Saboor took to Instagram to put an end to the rumours. She posted a message for her followers on Instagram which read as follows: “I would like to clarify a rumour spreading around social media about me attempting suicide,” she began. “Alhamdulillah there is no truth to any of this. I had simply been admitted to hospital due to a bad case of food poisoning and I am fine now.” She concluded with advising people to think of others before posting such news.

Iqra Aziz responds to uproar over controversial marital rape scene While Ranjha Ranjha Kardi has been praised by many, some have called out the makers of the show for allegedly normalising marital rape in recent episodes. There hasn’t been an official statement from the producers, however Iqra has finally responded to the uproar via an Instagram post that read “One of the most pressing issues today that we don’t talk about is that we think of marriage as a binding contract to anything and everything. But marriage is based on trust and love and consent, consent to live, to breathe, to be able to say no. I hope Noori and Bhola live happily ever after and let’s see how Noori tackles all the problems and Sahir in this situation.”

Fans walk out of theatres as ‘Kalank’ fails to impress Karan Johar’s mega-budget multi-starrer Kalank may have registered 2019’s biggest opening day collection, but viewers are taking to social media to criticise the film. Many fans shared their disappointment via Twitter. A user wrote “I have never walked out of a movie before it ended, never! I am pretty certain 45 more minutes were left in Kalank but it was just not worth it! While another said “Kalank is the first movie that I have walked out of. On a star-based rating, I would give this movie a blackhole.”

Performing music is hell says Ariana Grande When a fan tweeted “Music is your therapy and I love seeing it heal you” the 25-year-old songstress replied in a now deleted tweet saying “Making it is healing but performing it is like reliving it all over again and it is hell.” A lot of fans rushed to show an overwhelming amount of support. Many told her they “wouldn’t be mad” if she ended up cancelling the rest of her Sweetener tour. However, despite feeling “confused and tired,” Ariana promised she “won’t do that.”
