How work-from-home culture will
Impact Fashion As the world goes through a global health crisis, it is pertinent to note how consumer spending is changing. This will have an impact on even the fashion industry
T
he world is currently going through a global health crisis and to say there has been an upheaval is a mere understatement. While everyone is doing everything they can to stay safe and protected from the Coronavirus, businesses are suffering, industries are facing a downfall and there is so much uncertainty in the air. And with that being said, fashion is also one of the hardest hit industries. As the world embraces itself for what is yet to come, fashion is of course the last thing anyone would want to talk about. But as lifestyles change and as we see a shift in on attitudes and the fast-changing environment, many designers, fashion houses and retailers are going to be adjusting their approach to the changing economy. Retail has already seen a dramatic shift and consumers have shifted their spending habits; which need to be met with a changing approach from businesses. As more and more of us restrict ourselves to self isolation and working from home, will we start moving towards a different kind of work wardrobe? Will we now opt for more cozy knitwear and lounge wear to work in? Will retailers now start producing more loungewear and slippers with more people staying indoors and working from home? Since we no longer currently need our platforms and heels, it could be that retailers move into this direction. The idea of cosy fashion was predominant a few years earlier, now just a few designers have highlighted knit wear in their 2020 collections. Joseph Altuzarra for example combined elegant necklines and vintage ladylike silhouettes with sumptuous knits and fuzzy slippers. In the context of the unraveling crisis, his collection took on more significance. In the world of today, people have started to navigate towards strategies that allow them to work from home and have virtual meetings for example on Facetime, Google hangouts and Skype. This highlights what one would have to wear from the waist up because essentially that till is really what shows during a virtual call. It should be cosy, practical yet still e, professional. Whether a cosy turtleneck sweater or a button-down blouse, fashion trends will most certainly see a shift towards comfort over luxury..

5 Healthy Make-up Habits Every Woman Should Adopt
F
or many women, make-up is an essential part of their daily lives. Whether it’s a slick of gloss or a coat of mascara, a touch of make-up can make you look and feel great. Applying make-up can boost your confidence and it is the perfect way to add that finishing touch to your look. The type of make-up you opt for can make or break your look. But did you know there are certain make-up habits that you may be indulging in that could be doing your skin more harm than good? Do you sometimes feel too tired at the end of the day to remove all your make-up and indulge in a cleansing routine? Do you skip the sunscreen when you’re in a rush? Do you let a friend borrow that mascara without even thinking twice? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you’re definitely harming your skin without even realising. And so, here are some habits you should adopt for healthy, glowing skin.
1. Remove your make-up and wash your face every night There will be days when you will find it hard to motivate yourself to take off your make-up at night before you go to sleep but this is the most basic and most essential step. To avoid hurting your skin, it’s essential to develop this habit. For the process, start with a cleansing balm to remove all the surface layer make-up and follow it up by washing your face with a good foam, facial cleanser.

2. Moisturise, wear SPF, repeat Many people only use moisturiser and skip the sunscreen as a part of their daily makeup routine. Some even skip the moisturiser. But they really shouldn’t. Moisturiser can help to alleviate the dryness make-up can cause, and sunscreen can help with anti-aging efforts. A moisturiser should always be used as a base for your makeup and this will also give your make-up a smooth finish. If you want to save time, you can also opt for one that combines a moisturiser and an SPF in one.
4. Don’t share make-up products If you like a friend’s lip colour and think about trying it on, you should definitely think twice. Sharing beauty products spreads bacteria and will be damaging to your skin in the long run. You don’t know how long the product has been around and who else borrowed it the same way you are thinking about borrowing it.
5. Find products that work for your skin 3. Clean your brushes regularly We can not stress the importance of cleaning your brushes. It can be difficult to do this regularly if you wear make-up on a daily basis, but is still an important habit to adopt. Deep cleaning your brushes once a month will help get rid of the harmful bacteria on the brushes that come from your skin — from sweat and dead skin cells — and the bacteria that comes from make-up products.
5
APRIL 5-11 2020
Products that work for your friends may not necessarily work for you because everyone’s skin is different. You have to pay attention to the way your skin reacts to certain ingredients and products. Some products may be drying for your skin, while others can cause you to break out. By testing different things you can find the make-up that is best suited to your skin type.
Follow these simple habits that will get you healthy, glowing skin that you aspire to have. Make-up doesn’t have to be bad for your skin, but it can cause problems if you practice unhealthy make-up habits. These simple steps can save you from unwanted acne, early ageing and dry or oily skin.

Simple ways to
make your home more cheerful
Floral arrangement Flowers instantly brighten our mood and what better way to make your home more cheerful. You can simply pick flowers from your garden or order online and arrange them according to your own liking. You can set them on your side tables in your bedroom or place them on your dinner table. They not only add freshness but also colour and scent. Decorate with books If you follow décor inspirations on Pinterest or Instagram you’ll see a lot of people use books of their own liking as decoration pieces. You can set them on your coffee table or work from home station. Depending on how you set them, they can easily add depth and character to any room. Pop of colour Most of us are still reluctant to use pops of colour to our décor because it seems like the whole place needs to be planned around that colour. However, there is an easier way of doing it that doesn’t even require major commitment. You can simply throw a colourful woollen blanket on your living room sofa or add a vibrant painting or add some old bright decoration pieces to liven the room up. Rearrange your bookshelves Most interior designers will tell you, shelves are for more than just books. Fill yours with stacks of magazines topped

Amid the outbreak of Corona virus and social distancing, majority of us are spending most of our time at home. We get it, surrounded by the same atmosphere can be depressing. To brighten your mood here are a few simple tips to make your home more cheerful. with a candle or a quirky book divider or even adding frames or vases can make your bookshelves all the more interesting. Quirkier frames There are no rules when it comes to picking and choosing frames. Sometimes choosing the predictable option can be a little dull and boring. Instead, pair an old antique painting with a sleek modern frame, or vice versa. You can also put up contemporary art work in vintage wooden boxes. Add personality Sometimes you feel this pressure to make your home look incredibly streamlined and ready to be photographed at any moment. Resist it! Add your own personal touch to it, install a massive pinboard and fill it with photographs, cut-outs, mementos. If that’s not your thing, add candles or fairylights. It just adds a nice touch of personality to a space. Scents Scents play a huge role in creating any atmosphere. Make sure to opt for light and subtle room sprays. Nobody enjoys a scent that gets to their head and feels heavy. Music You can always play light soothing music, maybe a jazz tune or the sound of a waterfall. Any sound which brings you peace and instantly puts you at ease.

Warsi, Rumi, Kabir Das, Khuwaja Ghulam Farid, Ameer Khusro, Sayien Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and many others. We love incorporating their poetry within ours to convey a message of love and self exploration. What has been the most challenging project you have worked on? Kashmir’s song, Azaad Houn Main, was very challenging yet a great learning experience. How do you overcome challenges you face as a band? We believe in each other and let the person with the expertise handle while the others provide their solid support. What advice would you give to aspiring musicians? Keep following your dreams. Never give up on them. It’s difficult but there’s always a way!
How did Darvesh begin? It began with a dream of three people and grew through a journey into 10. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I will find such passionate band mates that will put in such effort to make it work like this. Tell us about the band and its musical journey? Darvesh is an amalgamation of 10 passionate musicians. We’re a band that has been working in the genre of fusion music since the past four years and have successfully coined a term “Qawwali Rock”, through our music. What inspires your music and you as a band? We love to talk about everything under the sun and particularly anything that affects us as people, as a society or as musicians through our music and songs! We are deeply inspired by poets like Allama Iqbal, Hazrat Bedum Shah

If you had a chance to perform with one musician (dead or alive) who would it be? We’ve performed with Abida Jee, so probably Nusrat sahab. What are the upcoming projects you are working on? We’ve recently completed recording our album. We’re really looking forward to the release of our new song’s music video, which is called Main Mast. The concept behind this song is that it talks about the atrocities against humanity. Soon after this music video launch we plan on releasing an OST we’ve done for a film by Sakina Sammo called Intezaar. We have also created a few original thumris with a touch of modern music, one of which will be released after Ramazan on our official YouTube channel. We plan on releasing the complete album on our channel as well, followed by two more music videos. We’ve been working on creating a concept
for Pakistan’s first ever vertical format music video shot on a mobile phone and we’re super excited about this project! Can’t wait to share it with our fans! How has your experience been collaborating with many artists in the past? We absolutely love collaborating with other artists. We’ve done so many collaborations till now and it makes us immensely proud and happy! Recently we collaborated with 55 artists to release a song in solidarity with Kashmir. It’s called Azaad Houn Main and it’s available on our YouTube channel. We have also collaborated with Neil Uchong for a wall mural and graffiti in our upcoming music video. We were lucky enough to be a part of Bunvat Festival where we collaborated with many international and local artists. This festival takes place every year and brings together local and international artists thus creating a fusion of content. Our most notable collaboration was with David from Germany, where the complete musical revolved around the idea of freedom! Any future collaboration coming up? We haven’t planned anything as of now but yes, you will see us collaborating with amazing artists out there, every now and then.

What inspired you to open a Moroccan spa, and how has your journey been so far in this field? On a visit to Morocco I was really intrigued to experience the Moroccan hammam which I had heard so much about. After the experience I was inspired to open something similar in Pakistan so that I can share what I was able to experience with others. Having the Moroccan hammam through their Argan based products was an experience like no other which is why I just had to bring it to Pakistan starting with Lahore. The Maison D Argan journey has not been without its challenges. As a housewife I had no experience of the corporate or business world so I was actually stepping into the unknown. However by the grace of Allah I have been blessed with amazing support from my husband who has been a rock for me every step of the way, and I have to mention our business partners who now feel like family. BMPR for giving us such an amazing platform in show casing the Maison D Argan experience, our social media partners REBRAND who have worked night and day to make sure we realise our vision through the social media platform, and Waqas Ashraf who has been there since the start guiding us every step of the way. What kind of interesting spa services and products is your salon offering? This is a really good question, because when we started off, all we wanted to do was offer the Moroccan hammam experience, however during our research we realised that we can infuse Argan oil in most of the regular services thus our name Maisan D Argan – House of Argan. Our signature services are all based on pure organic products from Morocco which include Argan based products as well as the Ghassoul clay and Beldi soap. We are strong believers in ensuring our treatments are of high quality and high purity which is why sometimes people may think we are a bit pricey but the value offered is much more. This uniquely places us amongst other salons whereby we are focused on authentic Moroccan services as well as products. What are the services and products your spa has to offer? Right now we are more focused on the holistic services and treatments. That being said our staff is very well trained and keeping up with new trends, whether it’s hair or make-up we’ve got you covered. How is your spa different from any other spa in the city which offers the same services? The Lahore spa scene is simply fantastic and we want nothing more than to be considered as one of the go to places. Our focus will always revolve around a Moroccan experience with Argan based services that will give our clients a unique experience not only from the service but also the environment we have tried to create of peace, calm and a homely feel where one can come to just leave the stresses of this world behind and relax.

What are the challenges that come with your job? Like any self-made business our challenges are not unique in terms of exposure as well as gaining the trust of prospective clients to come give us a try. And on a personal front being a mother of three growing boys adds to that mix. However, Allah has been really kind and where there have been challenges there has also been an equal amount of support to get through those challenges and having happy satisfied customers makes up for all the trials one faces on a day to day basis. What is your greatest professional and personal strength? My philosophy on both fronts is pretty simple. Be honest, kind and helpful wherever and whenever you can. The world is a difficult place as it is so our job is not to make it more difficult for others but to make sure we can make it as easy as possible. One should also focus on motivating, encouraging and helping others and if you cannot do that then the least you can do is be kind and put a smile on someone’s face. In your opinion, what social stigma does society need to get over? I still believe women do not get their dues in our society and it’s not about being equal or better than men, it’s about being treated with the same respect and dignity that we deserve. We have our own place in society and should not have to constantly prove ourselves worthy of respect. I hope InshAllah that we as a society reach that point where both men and women are respected equally. What is the most gratifying part about your job? Very simply put, when our customer goes away smiling and having experienced something new and wonderful from our services, that’s basically the most rewarding feeling in the world.

The Language of Fashion by Sumaiya Kamani
She walks in her well-tailored black blazer and slacks, paired with pointed-toe pump heels, while her hair is neatly packed into a top-knot bun. You, undoubtedly, think of her to be a powerful or confident woman. That’s the power outfits possess.
C
lothing is a very influential tool in the fashion industry, a tool that helps project a self-image that you want to display. It’s a wordless means to communicate a powerful message to those around you. Fashion, in turn, becomes your language, which speaks a certain story about you. You can put on an outfit and it can make you appear a specific way. It is why wearing luxury brands impacts the social power of many, compared to the ordinary branded labels. For some people, fashion becomes a drugfree boost that alters a terrible day they went through, or it can be a form of escapism, which lets them speak with wild convictions and return to something else later. It can make anything appear exciting or extremely boring. Your clothes also indicate how you want to be treated or what social group you would fit into. APRIL 5-11 2020

But it’s not just limited to that, it also changes the way you feel about ‘yourself’. It’s a novel concept, a term coined as enclothed cognition, that people have now started to acknowledge and recognise. Your feelings are the real barometer of your fashion. You arm yourself with your best outfit, when you want things to go a certain way. It’s an extension of one’s self, a way of syncing the internal with the external. The cuts, designs, patterns and colours, all play starring role in making an outfit to be what it is. Enclothed cognition provides scientific proof to the notion of dressing how you want to feel, instead of how you already feel, as it influences your mood. You subconsciously experience a change in your behavior, a mental shift, when you dress a certain way. For instance, power dressing, a very popular concept, increases dominance hormones in your body, which plays a role towards making you a better negotiator or an abstract thinker; while wearing active wear is most likely to encourage you to exercise

or work out. It’s precisely why some people consider investing in active wear a good idea. Similarly, uniforms are a symbol of unity, used to conceal differences. It serves to unite people and enhance relationship satisfaction in tremendous ways: there is a feeling of unity and collectivity set into your being. That’s how dressing in different ways affects your mood and behavior in different ways. You can use the concept to your advantage by making your day more exciting or fun with the choice of your outfits. We need to familiarise ourselves with the enclothed cognition phenomenon and be mindful of incorporating it to shape your psychological experience or performance everyday, according to what the situation or event (job interview, exam, night out, etc) asks for. Mix and match or experiment with your outfits and make the world your runway. Dressing a certain way will not only help you embody a self-expression or a state of mind you seek, but it will also shape other people’s perception of you, which in turn will affect your mental well being. So, putting thought into dressing a certain way becomes very essential.

Ayesha Ali Butt is a successful entrepreneur and a chef who started her online catering business Yeh Ghar Ka Hai; offering a broad range of great tasting and hearty desi foods. T.Edit gets talking to her about how she manages her business, her future plans and more
How did you turn your passion into a business — what’s your story? Since I was born and raised and married into a Kashmiri family, food was in my blood. Somehow, I always had this feeling that after my marriage I was going to cook for everyone at home. My mother in law, Zil-e-Huma, always wanted the typical kind of daughter-in-law. I started cooking for friends and family and got a lot of appreciation. So once these online food forums started, my husband started posting random pictures of my food. Then Nadia Jamil came to my place for brunch. We were connected on Twitter and through extended friends and family. She knew Ahmed Ali Butt, who is my brother in law. I made payyaas and all the other desi stuff. She was raving over the food and she took pictures and wrote a review of my food on the online forums and pages. People started calling my husband to ask if I had taken up cooking professionally. So, I received my first order because of something that started online. That was an achievement for me. The feeling is unexplainable. I was a one-man army doing everything myself. I have a small family so I have never had a servant. It has been three years now since I started YGKH.

Completing catering orders takes a lot of work; what’s your typical meal for the day? Mostly people go for authentic desi food which is not being served in any of the top notch restaurants of Lahore. Owning your own company isn’t always easy, it’s actually more “blood, sweat, and tears”; what are your biggest challenges as a business owner and how do you overcome them? Many times, people have tried to pull me down. I don’t get it. What is it? I feel that people try to pull me down because of my appearance. They feel insecure. This kind of negativity is bad. On the other hand, men don’t have respect for working women. They treat me exactly like they would treat their kitchen boys. Just to clarify, YGKH is not my bread and butter, it is something I do out of passion for food and cooking. There are many hurdles and at times I just want to quit. But why should I leave my passion behind because of others? In your opinion what differentiates Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad in terms of taste and food choice? I would say, Karachi has a lot of mix/diverse cultures as compared to Lahore as it has a fusion of different tastes. That gives Karachi a huge advantage. In my opinion, Lahore is much more conservative and we still rely mainly on authentic recipes. What is the secret behind sustaining a good food catering company? In case of YGKH, customisation is surely our strength and ensures top quality products. Any plans of opening a restaurant or café in the near future? I have always wanted to open up a small restaurant, a place that will go with the name, Yeh Ghar Ka Hai. It has to be related to the name. I want my customers to feel the same comfort they have in their own home. For that, I need some time, because I am the only woman of the house. I have children and my husband to take care of. I want to take it slow and easy. But for now, I am expanding my kitchen. People are approaching me with their brands and they want me to use their brand in my videos. Slow and steady wins the race, so let’s see. What continues to motivate or inspire you in coming up with new dishes? The love and respect I get from my fellow foodies.

What’s your specialty and your favourite food item? YGKH is famous for its Hareesa which is the main seller when we have a stall set up in food festivals. Therefore it is also one of my favourite food items. What’s your favourite quote or mantra you can’t live without? Khana recipe sai nahi, dil sai banta hai. Who or what gives you the most inspiration? My (late) mother, who is my mentor, my inspiration. Tell us about your family. Do they enjoy your meals? Haha that’s a tough question. My eldest son is a harsh critic and he barely enjoys what I make whereas my youngest simply loves all kinds of pasta I make for him.

How would you describe your body type? I have the body type where I can eat a pizza everyday and still have a hard time gaining weight. In simple form I am lean and petite. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body hasn’t actually changed at all. I have been like this since childhood. I do gain and lose a few pounds here and there but nothing that could count as a drastic change. How has your style changed over the years? My style evolves very frequently. I like to be classy and on trend. I also love to experiment with different looks. Some days you’ll find me looking like a homeless junkie and some days I’ll be dressed for the red carpet. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I think you should dress however you like and whatever you feel the most confident in. Being someone who fits into everything, and can wear almost anything which is nothing more than a privilege and a fashion influencer’s dream come true. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing? By wearing what other people think would look good on them. No one has lived as long as you have in your body, only you know what looks good on you or makes you confident. So wear what you want to, life is too short to

live according to someone else. In your opinion, what is your most troublesome area? I am lean and petite but I have acquired the skill of styling myself according to what suits me. It’s a skill I believe that everyone should have. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Again I would say I can make every outfit I wear suit my body. Now a days I’m obsessed with oversized everything and I can’t seem to get over this silhouette. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? The only piece I think that doesn’t look good on me is a sari. I don’t know why I don’t find it flattering on me. Though I have tried wearing it numerous times.
