LIFE STYLE

With

Saba Yussouf

Saba Yussouf channels her energy into running a biotechnology firm that has accumulated billions of dollars’ worth of technical innovation catering to the remediation of environmental threats and manages to look absolutely fabulous doing it. From cosmology appointments and workout regimes to travelling and business meetings on the go, we catch up with the Queen of Green to talk about how she manages to juggle her personal and professional life without losing her state of Zen What inspired you to come up with a project for renewable energy? After investing in efficient solar technology, I was determined to deploy it all over the world so everyone can benefit from the cost savings. In my opinion, energy is life and every human being deserves access to it. I want everyone to have the chance to build the life they want. You are very particular about your hair and skincare, considering you are almost always travelling, how do you make time for your cosmetology appointments? I never miss my monthly appointment with my talented skin doctor, Dr Vali. She also treats the faces of Victoria Secret models, so I can’t afford to miss any sessions with her! She is definitely a priority in my diary because of the skin confidence she has given me! APRIL 7-13 2019

Do you have any specific fitness regimen that you follow and would recommend? I love to run for so many reasons, it helps free my mind of any stress occurring in the office, but also keeps me trim so I can still fit into my outfits! Considering the amount I love to eat, cardio definitely is my best friend. When I travel on business, I always take my fitness attire and gadgets with me. If not an entrepreneur what would you have rather been? Growing up I wanted to be an astronaut. I was always mesmerised by the beauty of science and one day I hope I can make it to space! It’s on top of my bucket list. What are your favourite vacation spots? I love visiting Africa for its nature and fascinating ecological developments. I appreciate the fresh food and rich culture. Contrastingly, I love going to Los Angeles with my girlfriends to shop and visit spas, so it really depends what I am in the mood for! Having been born and raised in London, what do you think is the downside and perks of living in the city as an Asian? I am very proud to be a Pakistani woman in London and grew up with people from a myriad of backgrounds. It taught me so much about other cultures, races and religions that I would not have the pleasure to experience otherwise. The best part about it is being able to connect with non-Asians over our Pakistani food, music and clothes because Asian and English culture has somewhat blended together in London! It’s amazing to be able to celebrate our culture so strongly here but perhaps now that I think about it, the stereotype of Asian women does at time allow for people to judge me before they do business with me. They assume I am not focused on my career

and only care about having babies. You are in a different continent every week, which city or country do you consider home away from home? Paris is definitely my second home; I have great friends there and never feel homesick in that city. My schedule in Paris is similar to London so it’s familiar for me. You practice hip hop with JaQuel Knight, what is the thing you love the most about dancing? Dancing for me is a form of release; it’s a few hours of escape from the fast paced world I live in. Dance is my time to be away from my phone, whilst putting that energy into something creative. You are known as the Queen of Green, what is the story behind that title? I was sitting in a business meeting at Plaza Athenee in Paris last year, with my dear friend Jean-Emmanuel. Whilst I was rambling on about my vision to change the world and rid the planet of environmental threats, Jean-Emmanuel said “your new name is the Queen of Green!” since then it’s really caught on! What do you enjoy doing the most when you aren’t working? I love going to the Opera! The singing, the emotion, the thrill of it all totally captivates and transports me to another universe. Do you have any advice for the young girls who inspire to make it big in their life? I would advise young ladies to never ever give up. From my experience the easiest thing to do is to be honest, but if you don’t believe in yourself, trust me no one else will!

INTERVIEW

Powerhouse Sara Chapra speaks to us about her journey of organising The Wedding Atelier for the second time. She shares with us the benefits such platforms provide to vendors and clients, how TWA improved this year and the lessons she learnt last year

What benefits do startups/SMEs get by taking part in this type of expo/bridal fair? For starters, it’s a great platform for vendors who wish to project their brand. It’s a fantastic marketing platform. It’s important to understand that some brands have a fabulous product but are unable to get the right marketing or word out there for their product. This just elevates them and pushes them to the forefront. What was the one thing you did last season you didn’t repeat this year? We did the bridal trend forecast vision 2020 last season. What did you bring to TWA this year that wasn’t there last year? This year we did an installation exclusively for Sana Safinaz where they showcased their latest collection seen at FPW for the publicfrom ramp to retail. In what ways do you think TWA improved this year? We got on board some Lahore based vendors like Rema Taseer with Co Natural and her jewellery collection. We also created a pampering booth for the grooms as we felt they were neglected last year. So APRIL 7-13 2019

for developing and encouraging business to business. And we have seen so many ventures/ collaborations between our TWA vendors from last year which makes us really happy. That was our objective all along. What is the key to success in communicating with the public, both before and during these events? I feel like the key to any event is to stay organised and be passionate about what you are doing. Before the event it’s really important to highlight all of our vendors, showcasing what we have in store for our customers. During the event, it’s very hands-on where you should be able to answer any queries anyone has. Our goal is to communicate our message of being a one-stop shop for all our brides and grooms! while the brides shopped and walked around the grooms were pampered by GENESIS which is an amazing high end luxury spa and salon for men. What do you believe is the biggest challenge in the wedding industry right now? Budgets. Clients have become really price conscience and this often compromises our designs. They want everything but budgets are restrictive. Things have also become expensive and I hate compromising my design vision. What type of a platform has TWA provided for vendors in the past? If you see vendors who joined us last season, you can see their popularity has increased, their followers on Instagram have in some cases tripled. TWA also gives vendors an opportunity How has the platform helped brides to be? Do you believe this type of event makes wedding planning easier? Of course, the millennial bride wants everything. She has money and taste. But she just doesn’t have time. Our purpose is to facilitate brides to be by screening all vendors and only bringing on board brands which truly do have fabulous products that can help brides make quick decisions in one day whether it’s her photographer, make-up artist, interior designer, jewellry or wedding cake etc. She is able to make an informed decision after looking at choices available to her rather than getting stuck with a vendor who falls short of her expectations. We inspire a bride by showing her things she didn’t even think of. That’s the idea….to inspire. What are the three biggest lessons you learned doing TWA for the first time, last year? • Don’t forget the grooms. It’s their wedding too. • Exclusivity is not always the right strategy. • Make more choices and price ranges available.
