Unforgettable looks of the week!

THE CUT

FASHION

Aminah Tariq Aminah looks radiant in a hot pink classic kamdaanii suit! We love the hints of gold that gives her look that traditional touch. Her yellow and pink chunrii goes perfectly with her ensemble – she tops off the look with gold sandals, clutch and jhumkas. All in all this look is a mehndii favourite!

Anam Zuberi Anam’s colourful ensemble is bound to make you want to celebrate – she wears a block printed shirt paired with a salmon pink dupatta and kiwi green pants. Her pearl necklace is a delightful addition to her look. She keeps her make-up to a minimum with a pop of bright pink on her lips. What a fun and festive look!

AUGUST 20-26 2017

34

Maha Ahmad Maha shimmers in an all red ensemble adorned with stunning gold work. We love the detailing on her shirt and gharara, giving her look that much-desired opulence. We’re also impressed with her choice of accessories, especially that stunning matha patti!

35

AUGUST 20-26 2017

Mesha Shamsie Shah Mesha sports an overall traditional look with a quintessential lehnga cholii combo! She plays with colours and patterns by opting for a classic yellow dupatta a with gotta embellishment and fancy lace on the sides. She complete the look with statement smokey eyes and bangles.

Rida Asad Rida Asad is making us swoon over that light brown ensemble with gold detailing. We especially love the way she has accessorised her look with a black and gold clutch and emerald and pearl kundan jewellery. She keeps her hair and make-up simple so that her gorgeous outfit does the talking!

What W hat is the best bes st part about ab being on the radio? The best part ab boutt beiing on radio is the freed dom m. Yo ou can do whatever you u wa ant, yo ou can experiment with how w crrea ative you can get to stand d ou ut an nd nobody would bat an eye e un nlike eT TV. Have you ever dea alt witth a creepy text mes ssa age during u the show? Yes I have, there e wo ould b be mean comments and messsag gess but I’ve done Improv The eate er so o I know h w to deal with ho h thingss like these. I don’t let it get to me tho ough you learn to rise e ab bove e the hate eventually. Do you ever fear runn nin ng out of things to say on air? Yes! That is one of my big ggest fears. Being a radio jo ock key, ho ow fulfi filling is it as a profe es ssion? It’s fulfi filling when n pe eoplle talk or appreciate your work. Th hat’s the fulfi filling part of an ny medium actually. Which h fa amou us person wou uld mak ke the worst calller on a radio sh how w? Anyy fam mo ous person who talk ks slow, Ch hristop pher Walke en perhaps would be a really bad c caller. If you could me ee et anyone in th he world de ea ad or alive wh ho would itt b be and what would yo ou say to them?

47

AUGUST 20-26 2017

I would meet an inventor, probably Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg or anyone who has invented so omething that I could learn from. What would be harder for you, to o tell someone you love them or th hat you don’t love them back? It would be harder to tell someone th hat I don’t love them back. It’s hard for me to say no. Confl flict is a big turn off for me. Something or someone you miss th he most from childhood? I miss going to school in Canada. I made some really good friends th here who I am probably never going to see again. Name three things in nature you find most beautiful? I could list 10 things because I love nature but fresh air, birds and the so ounds of the waves crashing. It’s pretty amazing. Te me about the worst Tell punishment you had when you were a child? Worst punishment was the silent trreatment because mum would sc care me by throwing hangers at me but she would never hit me so th he suspense of that silence was nerve racking. When was the last time you lied and to whom and why? I don’t remember. I only lie when I re eally have to and when there is no way around the situation. Te me about something you Tell re eally regret? I regret not working hard enough and not doing enough for the world th hat I live in. Which is your favourite part of th he human face and why? The eyes! Because they reveal the

most about a person. If you could do anything or wish for anything that would come true, what would you wish for? I wish I could teleport so I could wake up in a different country every morning. I love travelling. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? I would love to trade places with president Mamnoon so I could pass silly laws like bald people can only step outside in the evening! If you were a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? I would fly! What was the weirdest prank call that you have made? I once made a prank call to Talat Hussain and said that he had to do a voice over for a condom ad. If you could have anyone locked in a room so that you could torment them for a day, who would you choose and how would you torment them? I would lock Trump in a room and tickle him until he gives in and resigns. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? Oysters! Hate them! Very disgusting. If you had to be trapped in a TV show for a month, which one would you choose? I would want to be stuck in Amir Liaqat’s show and end up winning three planes at the cost of some self-respect. Pretty good game.

FEATURE

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY WITH AREEBA AND NOOR UNNAHAR SIDDIQUE

Obsessed with everything art and creativity, twin sisters and bloggers Areeba and Noor recall their most memorable moments from childhood and what makes their bond so special! What’s your first memory of each other? Areeba: Probably watching Scooby-Doo together! Noor: Having lunch while watching Bob the builder. What is the craziest thing you’ve done together? Areeba: We read Nancy Drew a lot when we were kids. We once tried to locate a village where kidnapped kids were kept (our uncle lied about the village to keep us away from some old areas so we wouldn’t wander off to them) but we ended up being grounded at home (haha)! Noor: We were always looking for adventures that made us go to abandoned places, searching old newspapers to discover some old family secrets or something. Once we climbed on a tree and Areeba fell so we covered it with a faux story of her falling off a bicycle. It didn’t last long since our alibis couldn’t keep the truth but the whole incident was kind of fun. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Areeba: I used to burn paper a lot and throw half burning pieces in random places in our house. It was stupid and dangerous. I was always being scolded for that. Noor: I was a stubborn kid who had a lot of support from other family members in all kind of shenanigans. My mother certainly didn’t like my backup or ways and it got me into, you know, TROUBLE! If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Areeba: Noor has this chic floral shirt I really love (but she never lets me wear it) so I’m going to take it. AUGUST 20-26 2017

54

Noor: Areeba’s black kkurta pajama. It’s such a beauty. b If you could swap places w with each other, what’s the fi first thing you would do? A Areeba: Change her ri ringtone for my number. I’v I’ve always wanted a pe personalised ringtone for m me on her phone but she NE NEVER does that. No Noor: I would use all of her spe special art supplies. Wh What is the one thing you love ab about your sibling? A Areeba: Noor keeps re record of everything. S She’s kind of an o organised person who k knows where she spent h her money and where sshe put her stuff. I love tthis thing about her. S She knows her life. N Noor: Areeba is really good with understanding other people’s perspectives and doesn’t take things personally if they are not intended so. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Areeba: I say a good ole, classical sorry! I believe in accepting my mistake and saying sorry first (If only I am 200% sure that I am on the wrong side). Noor: I am really bad with apologies so I kind of pretend nothing happened (it is one sad way and I wouldn’t recommend) and try talking as we’d normally do. If everything goes right, it means things worked out. What is the one secret talent that your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Areeba: Noor knows lots of html codes I wish I could understand.

55

AUGUST 20-26 2017

Noor: Areeba has a wonderful sense of abstract art and colour pairing that I hardly ever get right. I wish I could have that! Describe your sibling in the three words: Areeba: Bright, creative, poetic. Noor: Fearless, genius, different. Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Areeba: Blair Waldorf. She’s basically what Blair would have been if she was desi and religious. Noor: It’s REALLY hard because i think she has a lot of qualities of some very sarcastic characters! But if we were to pick one, I would pick “Asi” from a Turkish drama serial called Asi (well that was coincidental). She is outspoken, adventurous and really brave that matches Areeba’s personality flawlessly. How are your personalities similar? Areeba: We talk a lot and we’re passionate about making things happen. Sometimes we talk about the same thing at the same time; people think our minds are synced. Noor: We’re both different and similar at the same time, which is ironic but we’re super enthusiastic about travelling, making art and social media. Perhaps it’s one thing about being a twin; similarities equal to differences. I can’t live without my sister because….. Areeba: She’s the most important person in my life who knows all of my secrets and can handle me even during my worst emotional states. Noor: She’s the only person in this world who influences most of my decisions — personal or professional. Since we have been in the same creative field, she has always helped me making the right move with insights and opinions nobody else could give to me.

How and when did you decide you wanted to be part of the fashion industry? Being Noor Jehan’s daughter, I think I have been part of the industry since I was born. The decision to make it a profession came much later in life.

What is more important to you, trends or individuality? Trends are important as they represent the present time, but it is individual style that makes fashion fun!

What is your forte as a designer? Making wearable clothes for a confident, strong woman.

How would you describe your design philosophy? Refined and elegant.

Where do you draw inspiration from? Beautiful people and places inspire me the most.

One international celebrity you’d like to dress? Deepika Padukone. I think she is strong and confident and tremendously beautiful. AUGUST 20-26 2017

66

How do you want to bring about a change in the local industry through your brand? Fashion should be wearable and inspire confidence. It is not for a certain age or weight. I think as an industry we should remember that. If not a designer, what career path would you have chosen? Interior designer. Your favourite thing to do when you’re not working? I love entertaining. Future plans for your brand? We plan on going big with lawn. We really enjoyed doing two collections in the past and we think it is an area where we can really expand. Tell us about your upcoming collection. How is this collection any different from the previous one? Mina Hasan Collection III is very versatile. It has a wider range of silhouettes and bold experimentation. Mina Hasan is launching its casual prêt collection for the very first time. Why did you feel the need to launch it? I think every design house has to evolve with time. Doing casual prêt is what our lifestyles demand right now as women get more busy and need more casual ready-towear clothing. What edge does Mina Hasan have over her competitors? We don’t compromise on materials or quality. In today’s market, brands often have to compromise to be more competitively priced.

Bookworms come enjoy a great read at the book launch of Dust by Azra Abbas at T2F on Sunday August 20, from 7pm – 9 pm. This book is a biography of the author and very skillfully presents a picture of her childhood, juxtaposing childish playfulness with the realities of the urban middle class she lived in. The prose is engrossing because it presents a child’s candid and forthright perspective of the society she is part of. The curiosity of a rebellious child forced to survive in the adult world provides insight for the readers into the mind of a child forced to grow up before her time. A number of the author’s poems, also translated by Samina Rahman, are included in this volume. The author will be signing copies after the launch.
