TOSS UP

The bubbly actress, Ayesha Omer, plays a round of our Toss Up. She is her candid best as she talks to us about everything from her fitness regime, her favourite style stars and even digs deep to tell us something nobody else knows about her!

What’s your favourite exercise? I don’t exercise at all, but my favourite is cycling as I joined a spin class before my accident. Due to the accident however, I won’t be exercising for a while now. Who do you think is the best dressed fashionista in Pakistan? The people whose sense of style I admire, for always thinking out of the box and trying new things are: Meesha Shafi, Zahra Khan, Ayesha Noon, and Feeha Jamshed. What’s the best activity when home on a rainy day? I like going out on rainy days, but if I were home then I’d sit outside on the patio with a cup of tea or sit by the window and listen to some good music or maybe talk to a friend on the phone.

What’s your favourite fashion trend of all-time? Crop tops and high-waist flared jeans. If you had to choose another career, what would it be? A painter. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? Beyoncé or Michael Jackson? I like the adrenaline rush that singers get. I can’t pinpoint one person but definitely someone who’s either traveling the world or making the world a better place. The first person that came to mind was actually Edhi. He accomplished so many amazing and challenging things for our country.

36

AUGUST 21-27 2016

What do you think would be the hardest thing for you to give up on? My bedroom — it’s my sanity and peace. Giving up on my space would be tough. Also, I ‘d never want to give up on being able to make my own food choices or give up any of the people I love, especially my family and friends.

What quality do you dislike in people? I can’t stand people who are constantly trying to impress others, or people who talk about themselves and/or their professions all the time.

What do you miss most about your childhood? I had different stresses at that time but I miss the simplicity of childhood. Everything was laid out for you and it wasn’t ever complicated. I miss the discipline and the routine that I had back then. Life is so erratic now. Tell me about the worst punishment you had when you were a child? My mother was a very strict parent and I had a lot of rules, but I wasn’t punished as such. I do remember having to eat porridge every morning, which I couldn’t stand. My punishments involved eating something unpleasant, having to apologize to my brother 100 times after one of our fights, not being able to watch my favourite TV program or not being able to play with a friend. Who do you envy? I’m inspired by people and hope to be someone who isn’t ever stressed. I’m always stressed and envy people who just take things as they come. Like certain people fall asleep anywhere, at anytime! I really envy that. I also envy people who take out time to do what they want and get away from their daily life or work without feeling any guilt. Focus and good decision-making are also skills I envy.

What scares you the most and why? I fear losing the people I love or causing grief to someone. I would never want anyone to be unhappy because of me. Which is your favourite part of the human face and why? The eyes and mouth because they communicate a lot. Favourite snack? Nuts, dark chocolate or fruit.

If you could get one tattoo what would it be and where? I don’t want a tattoo because I don’t know what I would want on my body for the rest of my life! Temporary tattoos for sure, but nothing permanent. What is your favourite thing to spend money on? Food and clothes! What is your favourite music? I listen to all sorts of stuff. I’ve grown up listening to old Indian songs, Bulleh Shah’s poetry, qawwalis, Nusrat and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Coke Studio, as well as a variety of DJ’s. I have a different favourite song for all my moods. What is the one thing about you that nobody knows? I cry easily in sadness or in frustration and that is something I’d like to control or change. Another thing about me is that I love hanging out with kids and animals a lot more than grown up people. What’s the best thing that happened to you this year? I started understanding myself a little better and faced many realities. AUGUST 21-27 2016

STYLE ANATOMY WITH MISHA JAPANWALA The young fashion student at Parsons talks about the style rules she always abides by and her wardrobe evolution after moving to New York City

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

40

AUGUST 21-27 2016

How would you describe your body type? I’d say it’s like a ruler — I’m straight with almost no curves. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body has pretty much stayed the same, although I’ve put on a bit of weight in these last couple of years. How has your style changed over the years? I’ve become a lot more experimental and braver with my style choices since I’ve moved to New York. Constantly observing people and their street-style has been a definite source of inspiration for me. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My stomach. When I put on weight, it all goes straight there! How do you dress your body according to your body type? I wear A-line tops with loose-fitted pants or fuller skirts to give the illusion of a curvier frame. I also like to dress according to the rule of thirds, which is to combine separates that are uneven in proportion to each other. This fashion trick enables me to elongate my frame and makes me look taller. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? One of the biggest mistakes a person can make is to blindly follow or imitate another person’s style or way of dressing. It is important to inject your own individuality into what you’re wearing. What I love most about fashion is its ability to tell a story about something or someone. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Silhouettes that are fitted on top and flared towards the bottom suit my body the best. What is the one piece of clothing you shy away from wearing and why? Bold colours and busy prints are hard to find in my wardrobe. I usually play it safe and go with monochromatic colour schemes or neutrals. However, I’ve started pushing myself to buy brighter colours, more prints and take bigger fashion risks! AUGUST 21-27 2016

THE VAULT The jewellery designer behind Project Rich, Madiha Saail, talks to us about her family heirlooms and her most favourite creation

How/when did you get interested in jewellery? Ever since I first laid eyes on my mother’s vintage wedding earrings. I used to hang them on top of my ears and walk around because I wasn’t allowed to get my ears pierced. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery (precious or costume)? My all-time favourite is my dadi’s gothic garnet set that I received as an heirloom on my wedding. My new favourite however is the ‘Quaid kara’ from my own line. Where did you buy/get them from? I designed the ‘Quaid kara’ and the garnet set is a family heirloom. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? en to me I’m quite attached to my graduation locket, which was given when I got my Doctorate degree in Pharmacy, by my loving chacha. I wear it every single day. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? dI I saw a penny bracelet with the Queen of England’s face on it and ear? thought I don’t love the Queen, but whose face would I want to wear? k That’s how the ‘Quaid kara’ was invented. The moment it came back er from the karkhana, it was love at first sight. I got it made in both silver and gold. I wear it with everything and never get bored of it.

47

Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? If my husband is reading this — a pair of princess cut, diamond studs. AUGUST 21-27 2016

Amna Babar Amna pairs a navy top tucked into matching straight leg pants, and adds silver peep-toe heels and a gold box clutch to accessorise. She shows us how pairing silver and gold is never a fashion no-no, and comes out a style star even while keeping it simple.

Samia Akram Samia looks pretty in a light pink crochet top paired with skinny black pants and silver slip-ons. This understated day-look is a definite win in our books!

ooks of the week!

Parisheh James We love Parisheh in this classic all-white look with a deep red lipstick. The strapless top with a highlow hemline is flattering on her petite frame, and the addition of her statement necklace takes her look even further.

Shanzay Sheikh It’s all about patches and we love Shanzay’s patchwork denims that she pairs with an off-shoulder white top, and pointy nude Louboutin heels.

Alayna Malik Grey is one of our favourite neutrals and Alayna does complete justice to it. She wears a grey tank top and cardigan with relaxed white trousers. To take her look up a notch, she adds black gladiator sandals. We love her effortless style!

WITH MISHAL ASAD AND ANUSHAYE NABEEL

What’s your first memory of each other? Mi Mishal: h l I remember b th the fi firstt ti time I saw N Nush, h she was this kitten-faced-thing cuddled up in my mom’s arms at the hospital. Needless to say it was a moment of jealousy! Anushaye: I’m eight years younger than Mish so there must be lots of firsts that I don’t remember. But I’ll never forget dropping her to school every morning while she ate her cereal in the car. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Mishal: Nush and I put together are pretty much crazy all the time, we understand this side of each other that no one else does! Anushaye: Mish and I are insanely hyper people and together we are probably the wildest pair. We’ve done things like wear princess wigs in the children’s

While Nush stood in a corner and observed it all, so she could be the perfect child learning from our mistakes. She’s pure evil! Anushaye: Well, I didn’t get punished for much since I learnt quite a bit from my sloppy older siblings to know what not to do, but boy did we both really get it from our mom in our teens. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Mishal: If you physically see us you’ll know there’s

no way I can fit into anything she owns. Though I do love this gorgeous Bunto Kazmi outfit she has and I have my eyes on it. Anushaye: I love Mishal’s taste in clothing so it is safe to say I’d love to steal more than half of it. I do particularly adore her new fur jacket, which is soft enough to spend my whole life in.

What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you did too? Mishal: I hate to admit that she’s way more organised than I am, and a fabulous cook! Anushaye: Growing up I acquired a lot of her talents, but how effortlessly she balances work, her children, family and a social life is definitely something I admire.

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Mishal: I would eat like a maniac because this girl does not gain weight. I hate her for being a stick figure! Anushaye: I’m so envious of her voluminous hair that I would probably run to get a blow dry and bounce around in the curls all day!

Describe your sister in three words: Mishal: Fierce, passionate and dramatic. Anushaye: Beautiful, hilarious and creative.

Which fictional character is your sister most like? Mishal: Bambi. With those eyes what else could it be! We’re similar in Anushaye: We’re so many ways. We are both hot-headed but real marshmallows at heart. The way we think, talk and process emotions is also identical. You can barely tell we’re nearly a decade apart!

If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Mishal: We don’t talk for a few seconds and then one of us cracks a joke and we’re okay. Anushaye: We are both ferocious and sensitive so when we’re fighting it turns into a warzone. However, all it takes to fix is five seconds of silence, and looking at each other blankly to burst out laughing.

I can’t live without my sister because… Mishal: She’s my life-line, I would crumble without her support. Plus how can one pass on free baby-sitting! Anushaye: My sister is my best friend, my partner-in-crime, my best advisor and confidant all in one (and you too mom). I wouldn’t be who I am without my wonderful sister. AUGUST 21-27 2016

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS

WITH SHAMSHA HASHWANI While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many dierent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Maliha Aziz Jamil

Marketing Director, Farah Talib Aziz

I styled the Shamsha Hashwani dhoti shalwar with a chikinkari box-cut kurta by Farah Talib Aziz and a Farah Talib Aziz mother of pearl clutch with golden accents. I paired this with my gold knot slip-ons from Zara. I accessorised using my everyday jewellery, which is my pearl and diamond rings, earrings, and a watch. I went for a very minimal make-up look, with just some kohl pencil around on my eyes, and I kept my hair straight. I would wear this outfit to a brunch, as I think it’s a great daytime look. I also think it would make a great Eid outfit! 52

AUGUST 21-27 2016

This lightly embellished hed dhoti shalwar, with pearl details by Shamsha Hashwani is made of an opulent silk fabric,, and is tailored to perfection. The simple piece is truly uly a wardrobe essential ntial this season, and d can be worn with a variety of different ensembles. sembles.

Nashmia Amir Butt Journalist

Considering the upcoming wedding season, I thought it would be interesting to mix something formal with the silk dhoti shalwar. So I paired the shalwar with a heavily embroidered red choli and wrapped a dupatta around to make a dhoti sari. The choli and dupatta is by Sonia Amir. I completed my outfit with gold heels from Dune. My hair and make-up was from Mahak Bokhari at Neelo’s Salon. They gave me a smoky eye with light pink lipstick and a voluminous blow-dry. I would wear this outfit to a mehndi or a grand dholki.

Mahvash Sheikh Managing Editor, Secret Closet

I wore a black shirt from High Street Islamabad, and I paired it with a thin waist belt from Hermès. I then wore my gold pumps from LK Bennett, and completed the look with a gold clutch from Fendi. I kept the accessories very minimal, as I didn’t want it to be too formal. Shamain did my hair and make-up; I went for a very natural look. They gave me bright lips, soft eye make-up, and added some curls in my hair. I would wear this outfit to a lunch or an evening tea.

THE CORNER Jawaid Iqbal, the President and CEO of CMC, invites us into his cherished study and introduces us to his dearest companions, ultimately giving us a glimpse into his world By Alyzeh Alam Photos by Haya Faruqui

A

s we enter Jawaid Iqbal’s home, he leads us to the cosiest room in the entire estate, his study. Two striking paintings, right outside the room catch our eye. The first is a vibrant painting by Wahab Jaffer, which Iqbal’s wife requested him to use. The second painting is by Ghulam Rasool and portrays the nature of winter, Iqbal’s favourite season. He tells us that him and his wife commissioned both the paintings. “This is my favourite corner because this is where I spend most of my time with my friends.” Given that the room is much smaller and monotone as compared to most of the house, we are slightly confused. He carries on, “These friends are not born in my time and by friends, I of course mean books, about history, mostly.” Iqbal shares that his principal belief is that if we are able to understand the language and the message of these books, then history and the remarkable people it is about, will become our sincerest friends.

66

AUGUST 21-27 2016

We glance at the shelves and spot numerous works of literature and autobiographies of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, and Muneeb Niyazia to name a few. A passionate Iqbal says, “Reading books about powerful leaders is not only literature, but it is also travel. You travel with the author to that leader’s time and witness the problems that he or she faced. That is what I enjoy about reading.” Upon inquiring we learn that as this corner is used solely by choice, it is occupied depending on Iqbal’s mood. “I never force myself to come here. Reading is not a duty, but a pleasure for me, so I only come here when my mind is open to enter the world each book comes with.” Apart from the large wooden bookshelf, which occupies more than half the space, a few eclectic sofas are neatly placed and a large window overlooks the luscious green garden. While we look around, he informs us that his wife did the understated interior in this room. The walls, painted in soft tones, radiate warmth. A variety of paintings, add colour to the otherwise neutral colour scheme in the room. Amidst these paintings is a portrait of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto by Amin Gulgee, who recently visited Iqbal to re-sign the artwork. We spot another painting by Anwar Maqsood, which Iqbal tells us was given to him as a present on his 50th birthday. Displayed across one of the walls are pictures of Iqbal with Benazir Bhutto, Hussein Muhammad Ershad, Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan and Muhammad Khan Junejo, and he is quick to share that on the very sofa we sit, Pervez Musharraf sat not too long ago. This wall not only reaffirms Iqbal’s strong political connections but also his love for the very subject and topic of this corner — history and politics. Apart from using this corner to read, Iqbal tells us how being in it takes him down memory lane and thus he also spends time in the room, reflecting. He smilingly says, “I come here with an appointment to see Jawaid Iqbal, and when I am here to see myself, I am completely honest, original and open. It is the healthiest and best meeting one could have.”

FASHION

Bunto Kazmi When I was growing up, there were only a handful of designers, and Bunto Kazmi was one of them. She is definitely one of my favourites. I especially like her detailed embroidery.

THE NOTEPAD

Rohit Bal In the subcontinent Rohit Bal is my favourite because he is timeless, classic and doesn’t compromise on quality at all. Today I feel there is a craze for prêt and lawn, which has made quality suffer a lot. However, Rohit Bal never compromises on quality, which is also what I try to do. I never compromise on quality, craftsmanship or my values. People might call me boring, and they may also call Rohit Bal boring, but this is the school of thought that I come from.

One of the most prestigious names in Pakistani fashion, Umar Sayeed jots down the designers, models, experiences, and garments that have inspired him since the early years of his career

Maison Valentino Internationally, he is one of my favourite designers. I love his cuts. As a designer, I am very particular about cuts and tailoring myself, and I appreciate Valentino’s fine craftsmanship. I also love how his persona is so larger-than-life.

Models I have been in this industry for many years now, and at different times, different models or personalities have inspired me. With certain people, when I dress them in my creations, I truly feel like they have done justice to my clothes. For me, Vaneeza Ahmed was one such model, and even now, if she was still working or whatever the occasion may be, I would love to dress her. Resham, Iffat and Iman are some more women who I think carry themselves really well and I love dressing them also.

Karl Lagerfeld I love his personality and his courage. I have been following him for years, and even at this age, he comes up with such innovative ideas. He truly keeps the zest for life alive! Even something like thinking of new ways to photograph his ads, like he did for Chanel, is just amazing. Everything he does, he does so beautifully. AUGUST 21-27 2016

TeeJays This story dates back to when I was in 8th or 9th grade but humare demag kharab the bachpan se! When TeeJays opened, we went absolutely mad. If I recall correctly, in those days the designer had just come out with grey cargo trousers, and I absolutely fell in love. I loved them so much that I used to go to Tariq Road and order them again and again. That was the first pair of designer garment that I ever purchased.
