WITH KHALID MALIK Which one out of these is most important in your profession and why? Knowledge, humour, intelligence? Humour, but by definition not in the conventional sense where we talk about things being funny but from a perspective where one doesn’t take things too seriously. Where one is able to shift perspective. It is only through humour that you are able to see the lighter side of the dark. That’s what humour is for me, making it the most important out of all. Ever lost your temper on air? I have never ever lost my temper on air. What do you enjoy most acting or hosting? Out of the two I do enjoy acting more. What was the benchmark of your success? My benchmark I think is when I receive feedback from my listeners telling me how much of a difference my morning show makes in their day. Even if one person messages saying that they’ve been able to smile, for me that is a huge achievement. What is the best part of being an RJ? The best part of being an RJ is being able to meet new people every single day.
A man of many talents, and the voice behind d FM91’s morn ning jam, Khalid Malik, plays a game of chance with us. Find out who he would trad de lives with and what he would have chosen as a career if he weren’t an entertainer
One thing you would say to your past self? Keep doing what you’re doing because there is something very special planned ahead. Who is the messiest person you know? Actually I think I am the messiest person I know.

A story you recall from the past? Many years ago I was playing around a for sale sign that was erected by wooden pillars and there was a nail jutting out and I was playing and I didn’t know, I kept moving back and as I moved back I literally walked into a big nail. That was just so dumb. If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask? The truth for me isn’t a question to be answered, the truth for me is a moment to moment reality. If you could trade lives with another person who would it be and why? Any one of the people who lived during the times of Baba Farid and Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. I would love to feel what it was like to be in the company of some of these highly elevated individuals. What is the closest thing to real magic? When you are able to see your dreams manifest right before your very eyes, that’s just magic. If you had a brainwashing machine, who would you use it on and why? I think I’d brainwash everyone in Pakistan to be more tolerant and more accepting. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? I would like to be a bit more detailed about things; I am a very big person so I would like to pay a little more attention to detail. Who do you trust with your life in their hands? I trust my family with my life. If you were guaranteed to be successful in another profession, what would you want to do? I would like to be a life coach.

FASHION
The fashion designer, blogger, stylist and entrepreneur talks about how she sstyles her physique and gives us fashion advice worth following Unde erstanding your body is the key to lookiing good and a trait found amongst all im mpeccably dressed fashionistas. While peop ple shy away from talking about their bodie es, these brave souls explain how they work k their anatomies to their advantage AUGUST 6-12 2017
36
How would you describe your body type? I’d say my body type is somewhere between an hourglass and an inverted triangle. Has your body changed over the last five years? Yes, definitely! I used to be extremely skinny but over the years I have gained a lot of weight due to my routine, which demands for me to be stagnant for long periods of time. Also my social habits involve eating out mostly. How has your style changed over the years? I was always into fashion and kept myself up-todate with the trends every season but studying fashion design broadened my perspective and taught me a lot. Now my style is more individual. I go for trends according to my body type and don’t follow anything blindly. Comfort is always first for me. In your opinion what is the most troublesome area? My most troublesome area would be my legs. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I avoid wearing body-hugging clothes because they always reveal flaws. Very baggy clothes on the other hand make you look disproportionate, so I balance it out.
In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? The biggest mistake a person can make is ignoring their body type. Always dress according to your body type! I cannot stress enough on how important it is. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think H-line and A-line silhouettes flatter my shape. What is the one piece of clothing you shy away from wearing and why? I am pretty confident when it comes to experimenting with fashion and clothes. I wear everything from crop-tops to off-shoulders or tubetops and even backless. However the one thing I always shy away from is showing off my legs. I still need to ask myself why!

The innovative e entrepreneur beh behind Zeh unloc unlocks her er vault, showcasing showcas her authenti tic jewellery wellery collection collec
How and when did you become me inte interested in jewellery? My family busin inesss is mining and that’s how Zeh came about, t, as a marble ma is one of the materials that we mine. m However, H I wanted to add to Zeh’s e-comm merce and like marble, stones are also natural al al materials that we mine. I thought addi ding jew wellery would bring variety and would be som ometh hing interesting for the brand to do, and th houg ugh it has a completely different market than h hom me accessories and marble ware, the experience ien has been equally as exciting for me. Wha hat are y your favourite pieces of jewellery? Ever since Ev e I was young I’ve been a huge fan of chunky ring ngs, so I love the ‘Calisto Ring’, which has four ston ones in it. I also really like the ‘Iris earrings’, whic ea hich have a black onyx and a rose quar artz stone in n it. it What m materials do you ou u use? The jew wellery pieces are gold plated and use uncut stoness such as green amethyst,, rose quartz, quar kyanit nite and ruby. They’re y actually not locally mad ade, both the designing and the crafting process take ta ake place abroad. Just like marble, ston stones have different grades and the shades are always sslightly different, this is why each piece is unique! Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to?? Not really, but if I had to choose it would be the two stone earrings called the ‘Iris earrings’. Share a story about Zeh that is close to your heart: Zeh is actually an area in Balochistan where we mine onyx, which has been there for centuries. About three years ago my father asked me to try and make a table using onyx. The result was a coffee table made of dark-green onyx and wood. After making it however, I decided that I didn’t want to
do furniture; I want wanted to do so omething for a niche, unsaturated urated m market – that is why w I started doing plates and platters and that’s how Zeh was created. Is there here anything on your radar tha that you want to int ntroduce in the future? I like lapis, turquoise and sstones in shades of blue. Also, there are these geome geometrical rings gs that th will be arriving soon – I’m super-ex super-excited abo bout those! AUGUST 6-12 2017

BEAUTY
Summer months are not kind to our skin and we must do all we can to protect it. So, if you want to give your skin some TLC but don’t want to spend too much at the local spa, try these homemade mask recipes (tried and editortested), from the comfort of your own kitchen
Yoghurt is a great natural ingredient that can be used for all skin types. It is loaded with vitamins and minerals that aids in nourishing and revitalising dehydrated skin, and also contains anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Nourish and exfoliate your skin by adding honey and oats to your yoghurt mask. Oatmeal is an absorbent that absorbs oil that clogs our pores while honey hydrates and moisturises the skin. You will need: • 1 teaspoon yoghurt • 1 teaspoon honey • 1 teaspoon oats Directions: 1. Blend oats to ensure they are finely ground. 2. Add all ingredients to a small mixing bowl and mix well. 3. Apply a thick layer of the mixture to your face with clean finger tips, avoiding the eye area. 4.Let mask settle for 15-20 minutes. 5.Gently rinse your face with lukewarm water. 6.Splash with cold water to close pores and pat dry with a clean towel.
This homemade mask can do wonders for your skin and those acne scars that refuse to go away. Turmeric, the much-loved spice we add to our food, has properties that can make your skin look healthy again. Added to gram flour, this mask is effective in treating acne and removing scars. Its anti-bacterial properties help kill bacteria as well as reduced inflammation and pain. Not only is this mask great for your face, but it can also be applied all over the body to remove dark spots caused by the sun. You will need: • 2 tablespoons gram flour • 2 tablespoons of milk • 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder Directions: 1. Add all ingredients to a bowl. 2. Mix together until you have a fine paste. 3. Apply to face and neck and leave for 20-30 minutes. 4. Wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry with clean towel.

As we grow older, the texture and elasticity of our skin deteriorates and paves way for fine lines and wrinkles. Other than ageing, factors such as lifestyle, genes and diet contribute to how long our skin retains the collagen needed for tight skin. There are ways however, in which you can improve the elasticity of your skin and keep it looking younger for longer, such as this homemade egg mask. This easy-to-make mask will give you a natural facelift in the comfort of your own home. You will need: • One egg • Cotton wool • Tissue Directions: 1. Break egg into a plastic bowl or container. 2. Separate the egg white from the yolk. 3. Using cotton wool, apply a layer of egg white on your face. 4.Once dry, place a tissue on your face, making holes for your eyes and nose. Apply a second layer of egg white over the tissue. 5.Sit back for 20 minutes until mask is thoroughly dry. 6.Peel tissue off and wash face with cold water.

The use of lemons in beauty treatments have been known for a long time. Its juice is popular for acne treatments, blemishes and oily skin. You can mix fresh lemon juice with water to create a toner that will tighten pores and reduce the amount of sebum produced by your skin. The regular use of lemons results in beautiful glowing skin. You will need: • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon honey • A few drops of almond oil • Cotton wool Directions: 1. Add all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. 2. With a piece of cotton wool, apply the mixture to your face, carefully avoiding the eye area. 3. Leave the mixture on for 15 minutes, and then rinse with cold water.
FOOD
HEALTH
THE NOTEPAD Zainab Muhammad, partner at Impact, yogi and jewellery designer jots down her go-to food items. From almond milk to oatmeal, she opens up about how these food items are incorporated in her healthy lifestyle Oatmeal
Almond Milk For anyone looking for a dairy-free milk substitute, almond milk is the go-to option. While dairy causes you to bloat, almond milk on the other hand is a great alternative as it is light and organic and great for women and their skin.
Oatmeal is a gluten-free whole grain and great source of important vitamins, mineral, fibre and antioxidants. I begin my day with a mason jar of soaked overnight oats. They give me energy and a sense of satiation while I teach and train myself. Oatmeal is also great because it is a belly flattening food.
Granola A popular breakfast and snack food, granola consists of rolled oats, nuts, honey or other sweeteners such as brown sugar. As early evening approaches, granola satisfies those late afternoon and early evening hunger pangs. I use it as a snack for fuelling up before my evening class.
Organic desi yoghurt The use of yoghurt is vital for any diet. Not only is it a good source of easily digestible proteins, but it is beneficial for maintaining cholesterol levels. Organic desi yoghurt is a good form of probiotic for the body as it helps speeding up the metabolism.
Olive Oil A core ingredient in the Mediterranean diet, the benefits of olive oil are unrivalled. As all our foods are cooked with oil, I opt for olive oil. It is the healthiest form of oil. It is also best when used in salad dressing and marinades as well.
Cinnamon and Turmeric Turmeric and cinnamon are spices that add flavour to our food and also happen to have numerous health benefits. Widely available in supermarkets and food stores, these spices are inexpensive and calorie-free. Both cinnamon and turmeric are fat burning herbs. Not only are they used in cooking but they are also used in herbal teas. AUGUST 6-12 2017
