LIFE STYLE

We speak to Umair Sheikh and Kinza Umair, the team behind Qalamkar, whose designs have been gaining popularity with each passing day. They tell us all about the inspiration behind their brand, how the brand has evolved over time and so much more!

Where does team Qalamkar derive its inspiration from? The collections are conceptualised to reflect a fusion of the past, the present, the conventional and the contemporary taking a form through art, architecture and culture from all over the world to create timeless detailing’ encapsulated into sublime attires. How do you keep your team motivated to come up with stunning collections each season? We believe that the environment of the workspace should be stress-free and filled with positive vibes so everyone can have fun and work at the same time. Also we don’t have to do a lot about keeping our staff motivated because they are excited to come up with new ideas. Moreover, seeing your very own creation physically printed and stitched is a treat for the eyes so the end product is a motivation in its own. How has Qalamkar evolved since it was first launched? We started as a lawn brand only and with time, as per the need of our clientele, we started coming up with festive and luxury wear offering our patrons affordable luxury so it is safe to say AUGUST 25-31 2019

that we have come a long way since the brand launched. What are you most passionate about? We’re most passionate about giving the best without charging a lot so cutting costs can take an extra amount of effort I would say. Also we want to stay relevant and ahead of the trend at all times. What do you think is your greatest strength? It’s a family business and I think that family is our biggest strength. Everyone looks after a different department making all the areas strong. We direct our energy in different places and its only family that stay in all sorts of times. Who do you consider to be Qalamkar’s biggest competitor in the market? Everyone working with women’s apparel is a competitor. However, we see ourselves as our biggest competition trying to do better with each passing collection, reaching to our fullest potential. How do you prefer to spend your leisure time? Well I can be two very different people. Either it’s spending the entire day in bed with a book or Netflix or it’s me being super active, doing my workout and going for swim to clear my head. What personal habit are you proudest of? I don’t want to sound so full of myself and I’m like each one of you; totally relatable. I think my best trait is that I go a step ahead for my loved ones, going as far as I can. I want to take care of the little details that can make the people around me feel a little special. How would you define Qalamkar in three words? Traditional, contemporary and timeless. What parts of your job do you find most challenging? Running a brand is not an easy task at all. It consumes you mentally and physically. A lot of hard work goes in to put everything to its place. The most difficult part is the quality check since there’s so much out sourcing going on with new techniques pouring in from different parts of the world and like a writer’s block sometimes you also get a designer’s block and it takes a lot of research to come out of it. Moreover this work requires a lot of attention to detail. Where do you see Qalamkar in five years? Qalamkar aims to keep on providing clients with inspiring designs and vibrant colours while ensuring not to compromise on quality.

FITNESS

without an ego who’s in a place of humble servitude. That’s true yoga. What is the inspiration behind the minimalistic interior of your studio, Soul Space? The answer is simple; peace, tranquillity and serenity. My studio rules even require you to switch your phones to air plane mode and are placed in a backroom away from us. Silence is maintained throughout the practice. The white, clutter free space is meant to create a peaceful and distraction free space for the mind to focus, relax and unwind. What impact has yoga had on your life? It has transformed my life 180 degrees. I found my soul, happiness and purpose. I began to live an awakened life. How true is this statement, ‘yoga helps one achieve harmony between the mind, body and soul’? It is 100% true. Everything is interconnected and with consistent practice, a domino effect is triggered leading to harmony between the three. Do you believe yoga is an alternative form of healing and medicine? Yes indeed. A yogic lifestyle is health maintenance and disease prevention. It is a holistic approach to maintaining optimum emotional, physical and spiritual health.

29

AUGUST 25-31 2019

What style of yoga has been the focus of your training and what makes that style most effective? Even though I’m trained in various styles of yoga, my preferred and most favourite style is Hatha. I like to hold postures steady and feel life’s force running through my body. I like to feel grounded through each asana and be aware of the physical strength rooting us down to the earth. I have a classic approach to yoga, I’m a traditionalist. I don’t fuss too much over perfect alignment; to me it’s more about how we are feeling on the mat. I believe the only goal one should have is loving awareness. I discourage any other goals, reaching a specific asana should never be the goal. I strongly dislike fast paced movements and jumping around. I focus on an inner experience of a loving awareness through the body and beyond. What has been your biggest struggle and achievement in the practice? I have loved this journey so much that it’s difficult for me to say I felt some sort of struggle at any point. It was quite challenging when I first started out because it was a completely new and different direction for me given that I started actually practising at a much later stage of my life. But hey, it’s never too late to follow your passion! And in terms of achievement I feel the highest sense of gratification each time a client shares how yoga made a positive difference in their life. That’s pure joy to me. What is your vision for Soul Space? My vision is to touch and transform as many lives as possible.

WITH SUNDUS JAVAID

FASHION

Instagram blogger Sundus Javaid (@sundiiiii) recently moved to Karachi from the US and decodes her style for us. She spills the beans on how her style has changed over the years, to the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing up and so much more Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

AUGUST 25-31 2019

30

How would you describe your body type? Petite and proud. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Not really, just a few pounds here and there. How has your styled changed over the years? I’m all about experimenting and taking riskss c with fashion. It’s become more polished and chic I’d say but the ‘uniquely me’ element is still there.. In your opinion, what is your most troublesome area? d Thankfully, I’m comfortable in my own skin and body so fortunately no troublesome area (yet)! How do you dress your body according to your body type? Because I’m petite, I prefer (and love) high waisted pants. Pair them with a belt and heels and you’re good to go. Also, any dress or skirt automatically turns into a midi length for us so it’s a win-win. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing? Boat necks are a big no for women with wide shoulders; makes the body look disproportionate. Also, ill fitted clothing looks fairly unflattering on the body.

31

AUGUST 25-31 2019

Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I’d say I’m more comfortable in clothing that doesn’t hug my body however, because I have a defined waistline, I live for crop tops and A-line dresses. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I’m not a huge fan of short sleeves. There’s no specific reason but I prefer my sleeves either quarter or full length.
