AYMEN SALEEM

FASHION

Youth Ambassador of the Pakistan Youth Parliament and a Guiness World Record holder, Aymen Saleem loves all things fashion. From how she dresses according to her body type, to her favourite silhouettes, she breaks down her style for us

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking

WITH

about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1 2018

34

How would you describe your body type? I would describe my body type as an hourglass because my shoulders and hips are almost equal in width and I have a pretty well-defined waist; which, I feel is one of the most prominent features of my body. Has your body type changed over the last five years? To be honest, my body has not changed much over the last five years. Thank God for my fast metabolism! How has your style changed over the years? Not too dramatically, I think I experiment far more now than I did before. Over the years, I began to understand what suits me and stopped following fashion trends blindly. That understanding helps me carry what I am wearing with confidence. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? None. But when I gain weight, it goes straight to my face which is obviously not fun. How do you dress your body according to your body type? In general, for our body type, wearing outfits that snuggle around the thinnest part of your waist can really bring out your perfect proportions. Personally, my go-to outfits are mid-waist pants, wide leg trousers, wrap around tops/dresses and A-line silhouettes etc. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? The biggest mistake one can make is to blindly follow fashion trends and not stay unique to your style. I think it is important to understand what works for you and be true to who you are. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think with an hourglass body type, you have the biggest freedom when it comes to clothes. Body-con/ fitted dresses and lightweight fabrics look particularly good though. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? Anything that doesn’t go with my personal style or is out of my comfort zone is a no for me. It might be the trendiest outfit but if it’s not me, I won’t wear it. But I love to experiment within my personal style. As a general advice, be who you are, in both what you wear and what you do. Individuality is hard to find these days; being original is really the best you can do. Express your individuality and don’t be afraid to experiment.

With

Juggan Kazim Feisal Naqvi

How and where did you both first meet? Feisal: We met first at a friend’s house. Juggun: We initially met at a mutual friend’s house but the meeting where we decided that we would like to get to know each other was when I went to Feisal’s office for some legal consultancy. What did you like/ dislike about each other in your first meeting? Feisal: I liked the fact that she was very funny and self-deprecating. Juggun: I didn’t really dislike anything about him. But, what I liked about Feisal was that he was very friendly, warm and intelligent, and I am someone who is attracted towards Intelligence. AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1 2018

36

How long did it take to decide that he/she was the one you wanted to marry? Feisal: It took about four months. Juggun: Actually Feisal thought about getting married. I was nowhere near ready but when he asked me about four months in, I gave it a thought and said yes. How do you demonstrate your love in different ways? Feisal: She loves lilies so I try to make sure that they are always in her room. Juggun: Feisal is the more romantic one in our relationship but I still try to match it by celebrating different occasions that mean a lot to him. I also go shopping for him to buy all his favourite things. What frustrates you most about your partner? Feisal: Sometimes she doesn’t listen because she is too busy being angry. Juggun: To be honest Feisal is very easy going. But, sometimes what frustrates me about him is the fact that every time I am angry he doesn’t understand what I am trying to say and how to calm me down. Who makes up first if you have a fight or an argument? Feisal: Depends. Can be either one. Juggun: Either of us, we deal with situations maturely. None of us are egoistic with each other. One thing you love about each other? Feisal: The fact that we are completely different and yet

37

love and respect the other. Juggun: There are so many things about him but it has to be the fact that he is a brilliant guy overall and I look up to him and I totally admire him. I have never been with someone that I admire but Feisal is truly admirable. Something you would want to change about your partner? Feisal: Nothing at all. Juggun: Nothing. I don’t want to change anything about him. Something you two have in common? Feisal: Our love for food. Juggun: We both love movies, food and comedy. Who keeps the room the tidiest? Feisal: Juggun does. Juggun: Me of course. Feisal can be really messy at times. Your best memory together so far? Feisal: Our son Syed Hassan Ali Naqvi. Juggun: Holding Hassan together for the first time. Your greatest strength as a couple? Feisal: Mutual respect. Juggun: We both really respect each other. We are on the same page, have the same vision regarding a lot of things in life although we have completely different personalities. Describe your relationship in three words? Feisal: Passionate, intense and caring. Juggun: A roller-coaster ride, affectionate and passionate.

LIFE STYLE

With Saher Sohail

The brains behind the infamous ‘The Pakistani Martha Stewart’, Saher Sohail shares the ideology behind her venture, how she aims to address important social issues through her work and what lies ahead for her brand

How did the idea of ‘The Pakistani Martha Stewart’ come about? The Pakistani Martha Stewart was a funny term that came up when I was still completing my undergrad. I was known for hosting many parties, doing lots of creative things like DIY projects, themed parties and more. I was termed the Pakistani version of Martha Stewart and it kind of got coined from there by my sister and friends. Originally it was a personal alias, hence the username. It kind of stuck with me until now. As an artist/satirist, what elements of the society do you want to address through your work? The double standards, the

imbalance of power roles, challenging the deeply rooted patriarchal narrative that has been embedded into the framework of our society and personal lives, and reclaiming the term ‘Feminism’. Tell us about your merchandise line and how do you come up with designs? It’s all about fun to be honest. I like the idea of being able to wear your culture on tees or sweaters. I love contemporary street wear, casual yet catchy. AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1 2018

38

Besides clothing, I have really popular phone cases, device cases and more. Who has been your biggest strength and support in life? My biggest inspiration and strength in my life has been my mom. Generic? Maybe. However I mean it when I say it. My mom has had a major role in who I am today, everything I am as a person. A woman, a daughter, an older sister and every other role I take on. All the progress I make in my professional and personal life will always root back to her. Not only is she my strength, but she is the reason I continue to prosper and excel. I always aspire to not only support her but become a sense of pride for her. A reason why her sacrifices were worth it. What message would you like to give to young girls aspiring to achieve their goals? Put yourself first. Find out what you like, what you dislike, what inspires you, what makes you happy. Dedicate some time to some introspection. At a young age we tend to distract ourselves

39

AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1 2018

and ignore our inner voice. Do not look at others’ lives and use it as a benchmark for your own success. Just because someone is pursuing something, em doesn’t make them any better than you. Ali Sethi

Singer, composer and novelist Ali Sethi is recognised globally for his music and novel The Wish Maker. The multi-faceted nature of Ali’s artistic endeavours beautifully encompasses the talent and diversity of the musician. He walks us through his journey as he talks about his new projects, the hardest thing he has ever done and the inspiration behind it all

AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1 2018

40

How did you decide your chosen career? As a child I found traditional music — ghazal, qawwali, etc — very stimulating. So I started to study it. And one thing just led to another. What kinds of things inspire you to write/sing? All kinds of things. A conversation with a friend. A sight on the street. A funny phrase I hear on a politician’s lips. Are you more of a singer or more of a song-writer? More of a singer in my opinion. What’s your favourite thing to do when you aren’t making music? Walking. Can you tell us a little bit about your latest song Rohndiyaan Ankhiyaan with Souchaj? This is made for the fashion brand Souchaj! It’s an evocation of the traditional Pahadi raag — native to Kashmir and the Potohar region. We’ve kept the arrangement minimal. I guess it’s a little bluesy, which is nice!. Name the top five artists/songs on your recently played list? Porches, Nouvelle Vague, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Chromatics and SD Burman. Which singer is your biggest inspiration? My teachers; Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and Farida

41

AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1 2018

Khanum Sahiba. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you take with you? A book, my headphones and my iPhone. What is the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do? Restrain myself when a delicious opportunity presented itself (I’m afraid this happens too often in my life!) Do you come up with impromptu dance moves while you’re on stage or are they practiced? Happens in the moment. I wish some of those moves could be deleted! If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose this career? Would you do anything differently? I would still choose this career. And do nothing differently. Do you ever see yourself transitioning into an actor? Nope. Is there anything exciting coming up for us to look forward to? Lots, actually. I’m making a couple of very interesting records in LA with producer Noah Georgeson. Also doing an EP of ghazals taught to me by Faridaji. Plus a documentary film I’m directing. Lots of good stuff ahead!

Shafaq Habib

Shafaq Habib has been working her magic with designing and crafting classic pieces of jewellery since 1981. Initially launched as ‘Pearls Galore’ in New York City, Shafaq Habib Jewellery house has been offering exquisite handmade pieces that exhibit modern design aesthetics; while remaining true to the spellbinding appeal of ancient Indian jewellery making forms. She shares how jewellery designing became her calling and everything in between

How and when did you become interested in jewellery designing? I have always loved jewellery. I took courses in jewellery designing in New York and redesigned my own wedding jewellery. An avalanche of requests and orders for pieces followed from friends and family, steering me to commercial enterprise. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? My favourite pieces would be precious, classic designs which are always admired, regardless of fashion and trends. Where did you get them from? I got an antique polki and meena worked bracelet from an exclusive designer exhibition in India. The design has a lotus flower which would open and close. It is a real piece of art.

Is there any piece that you are emotionally attached to and why? I like my diamond ring which I wear most of the time. It was my 10th anniversary present. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? The aforementioned ring was stolen by a babysitter when I lived in New York. I called my mother to pray for me and her prayers were answered. The ring was returned by the girl’s mother when she found it three days later. What message would you like to send to women through your brand? I would like to continue working and spreading positivity, as I feel all women need an unlimited amount of encouragement, ethics and values to bring the best out of them and for the generations to come. Following BBA Zaman got a diploma in fashion designing and that is where she met Fouzia, who is now her business partner. The duo recently exhibited ‘Surkhaabi’ a luxury prêt line that stands for body positivity. Zaman told The Express Tribune that she finds it hard to believe that her own clothing line is being launched. “Everyone who underestimated me, including my very own family, ultimately led me to where and who I am today” she added. Together, Zaman and Fouzia hope to create something unique that builds confidence in women. “It is basically a newlyformed partnership of cisgendered and transgender women. The unique thing about Surkhaabi is that it’s for women of all ages and sizes. The idea behind it is to promote body positivity and diversity and discourage body shaming,” shared the 24-year-old.
