TOSS UP
WITH ALI GUL
When was the last time you lied, and to whom and why? I was working on a MangoBaaz video in which we had to make people try goat testicles. I told them it was chicken till they were half way through. Their reactions were priceless — you should check out that video on MangoBaaz! How do people react to you when you enter a large party? Who has time to think about how people react? I just start dancing! What is your blood type? A-positive. Positivity mere khoon main hai. You discover that your wonderful one-yearold child was mixed up at the hospital and is not yours. Would you want to exchange the child to correct the mistake? I have no idea what I would do, I can’t think of having babies for a while. What question do you hate to answer? When are you getting married? Do you wear boxers or briefs? Whatever I can get a hold of.
The CEO of MangoBaaz plays a round of rapid-fire with us. Find out what the last lie he told was, the funniest prank he’s ever pulled and why he picks Lollywood before all else!
Do you prefer Coca Cola or Pepsi? Coca Cola for the win! What are your two favourite careers and why? I would like my careers to be challenging, hence, I would pick being an undercover ninja or a tree. If you were a cookie, which kind would you be? I would be a Nutella Oreo marshmallow chocolate chip brownie cookie.
DECEMBER 11-17 2016
56
What was the worst punishment you received when you were a child? I wasn’t allowed to go to my best friend’s birthday party because I didn’t finish my homework. What is the weirdest thing about you? My dance moves. Which feature of yours do you dislike the most? My backside. Lollywood, Bollywood or Hollywood? Lollywood. Maula Jatt all the way! What would we find in your refrigerator right now? Chocolates. I’m addicted to them. Would you ever go cliff diving? If you guarantee that I won’t die. Have you ever been in a car accident? Yes, a minor one. What is the weirdest prank call that you have ever made? I called a woman and told her she won a bike in a lucky draw and asked her to collect it from a random park. She was extremely excited. I’ve never felt like a bigger jerk. What is the funniest skit you have ever taken part in? It was called ‘Office Shit Showdown’. It’s about an employee and his boss, who have a competition on who can make the loudest poop sounds. People found it gross. What is your perfect pizza? A mozzarella cheese, thin crust pizza, with extra beef pepperoni, mixed veggies and turkey bacon. What is the strangest name someone has introduced themselves with to you? What is their real name? John V. His real name was Sarfaraz.

STYLE Anatomy WITH FARAH VAYANI
Farah Vayani, style consultant at Misha Lakhani and the Karachi editor of Weekend magazine, talks to us about the silhouettes that suit her body and teaches us why dressing for your physique is always key
Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage DECEMBER 11-17 2016
58
How would you describe your body type? I would say I’m petite and slim. Has your body type changed over the last five years? With my habit of inhaling desserts and cheese, my body type has definitely changed over the years. I’ve gone from a size zero to a size four. How has your style changed over the years? I have definitely added more colours into my wardrobe, and have embraced wearing flats, as opposed to opting for heels all the time. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I go with what I can pull off, rather than keeping up with the latest trends. There are different variations of cuts, so I stick to what is
59
DECEMBER 11-17 2016
flattering on my body type. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My thighs. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Not dressing for your body type. It doesn’t matter if it’s in style or not, an individual should avoid what doesn’t suit them. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Kaftans are my recent go-to! Also, tapered maxis and fitted pants with oversized tops. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? At 5’1”, I avoid anything that cuts my height. I also avoid body-con dresses.

THE VAULT WITH MEHR SAQIB The owner of Bastay, unlocks her vault and shares her unconditional love for bags
How/when did you get interested in bags? For as long as I can remember, matching my handbag with a pair of earrings and shoes was always a priority for me, but I never knew I would end up making bags myself. I started Bastay back in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2014, while I was working as a wedding planner, that I decided to put in all my efforts and creativity into taking Bastay full swing. It was perfect timing, as at that time the local market lacked good quality handbags and clutches. What is your favourite bag that you own? My all-time favourite bag would be this truck art, hand-painted clutch, which has my name on it. A truck artist painted it and I love the personalisation aspect of it. I am obsessed with things that have my name on them. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? I love my mother’s wedding clutch! It’s a gold, boxed clutch and I still have it with me. It is very dear to me as it is my mother’s and it was with her on her big day. I make sure it is kept in perfect condition.
65
DECEMBER 11-17 2016
Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? Other than my mother’s bridal clutch, I love my Bastay bags, especially the ‘Kellogg’s Clutch’. It was actually a very dear client of mines idea, which I designed for her last year. But it turned out to be such a quirky and fun piece, that I ended up keeping one for myself too. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get or make in the future? Lets just not talk about the things I want to get or make — the list is endless! I do plan on making bags for working women, which are not only practical but also cool and edgy. Something that will make their work routine feel more fun.

IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY WITH ZARLASHT FAISAL AND ZARMINA FAISAL
Sisters Zarlasht Faisal, CEO and imagineer of Zari Faisal Designs, and Zarmina Faisal, yogi, talk to us about their special bond. From fighting like Tom and Jerry, to sharing a love for travelling and being each others biggest support, these sisters truly are two peas in a perfect pod What is your first memory of each other? Zarlasht: I was the first one to receive the call when she was born. I picked up the phone, and someone from the other side was screaming, “It’s a girl!” Pure joy is what that moment felt like. I remember I was too scared to pick her up, as I was clumsy. Zarmina: Her pinning me down and tickling me is one of my first memories of her. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Zarlasht: Some of our fights have reached the level of tricks only seen in Tom and Jerry. But recently, while it was raining outside we left the door open and spent an afternoon practicing Yin yoga. It was amazing! Zarmina: That’s a long list. I can’t pick just one thing. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Zarlasht: I was a pretty crazy kid (though not as crazy as my sister). I remember being punished really badly for opening the door in a moving car. A lesson I’ve never forgotten. Zarmina: I was wild and got punished a lot. I played rough and was quite disruptive. I would cause (minor) injuries. Once I tried to bring down the tent at an uncle’s wedding. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Zarlasht: Her yoga wardrobe! She has the cutest workout gear — I would live in it if I could. Zarmina: I already consider her closet to be an extension of my closet, so there is no distinction. If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Zarlasht: Travel the world, only stopping to do yoga at all my DECEMBER 11-17 2016

favourite destinations. We have a mutual love for travelling. Zarmina: Run my business remotely, and travel! What is the one thing you love about your sister? Zarlasht: She is such a strong person, inside and out, and I love that she never settles for anything less than what she has dreamed of. I love the path she has currently taken in life with her yoga practice — I know it is going to take her places. Zarmina: I love her passion for what she believes in, and her determination to follow through on it. I may not necessarily agree with her every time, but it’s an amazing quality to have. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Zarlasht: We are both very stubborn, so a third party intervention is usually required. Zarmina: It’s Cold War for weeks, and usually our other sister, Myra, has to intervene. What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too? Zarlasht: She just trekked the Shimshal Pass! No small feat for a first timer; I think having the bravery and courage to venture into the unknown is phenomenal. It’s what I dream of having too. Zarmina: She is super creative — whether it’s with her designs, marketing concepts, or event planning. I wish being this creative came as easily to me; I have to work at it a lot more! Describe your sister in three words: Zarlasht: A dreamer, loyal and a go-getter. Zarmina: Opinionated, passionate and feisty. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Zarlasht: Jerry from Tom and Jerry. Zarmina: Dori from Finding Nemo. How are your personalities similar? Zarlasht: We are both big dreamers and I love that we share this trait. At different points in life we both wished we were born in the Woodstock era. Zarmina: At one time, we truly believed that our dog, Sushi, was a robot. That should give you a better idea of our similarities! I can’t live without my sister because… Zarlasht: Who else would drag me into a room that I thought was haunted in the middle of a fight? Yes, she did that once. Zarmina: I would have nobody to fight with, or to get free clothes from!

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS
T
his black jacket from the designer’s hit collection ‘Palace Walk’ has a cream coloured geometric pattern adorned with Tena Durrani’s nt signature, vibrant, floral embroidery. This is the perfect statement piece that can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion!
WITH TENA DURRANI
While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diơerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!
Aisha Gul
Teacher, Karachi American School I prefer to keep it understated and simple, even formally. Because the jacket has a lot of detailing, I wanted to pair it with something simple, therefore I opted for a solid black jumpsuit. For my make-up I went for a classic night-time look with smoky eyes and pale pink lipstick. I accessorised with ‘Pleasure Me’ earrings from Outhouse Jewellery and a midi ring. I then wore the ‘Albion Nano’ bag by Sophie Hulme and festive suede and metallic pumps by Charlotte Olympia. I would wear this outfit to a formal dinner.

Fizza Furqan
Assistant Editor/Features Writer, OK! Pakistan
My style varies from minimalistic to feminine. I like to keep it simple and classy but add a quirky detail in my outfit. To style the Tena Durrani jacket, I wore a black tank top tucked into mid-blue, faded, skinny jeans. I liked how it matched the blue embroidery in the jacket. I then wore the jacket over my shoulders and paired it with denim slip-on sneakers. Since the jacket already has a lot of colour, I went for a subtle look for my make-up — a dewy glow, light eye make-up, and a pop of colour on the lips to brighten up my face. I would wear this to anything from a formal dinner to fashion week.
Samia Akram Owner, Soma International
I would describe my style as classic and modern. I went for a traditional look with the vibrant Tena Durrani jacket. I loved how well it went with my silk lehnga, which also incorporated a similar palette of bright colours. I did my hair and make-up myself, and chose not to carry a bag or wear jewellery, as the outfit itself makes quite the statement. For shoes, I opted for a colourful pair of khussay from Soma International. I would wear this outfit to anything from a dholki to a mehndi. I think it’s a great option for any wedding event as it’s so versatile and easy to wear, but still makes a statement. 69

WITH KHADIJA MALIK
Entrepreneur and writer, Khadija Malik welcomes us into her contemporary apartment By Minahil Qasim
O
n a cold winter morning we make our way to a recently constructed posh apartment complex located in the heart of Lahore. Our host, Khadija Malik ushers us into her artistic space. Inside the narrow entrance sits a contemporary, white Home Couture console. A Jamil Naqsh calligraphy painting hangs pretty behind it. The walls are white but beautiful pieces in striking colours are thoughtfully placed throughout the apartment, creating the perfect balance. The furnishings are neutral with shades of brown and grey throughout, interspersed with various metals and glass that create a cohesive atmosphere. Elements such as the Home Couture pop art armchair, a yellow side-table, shaded lamps from Studio9 and the quirky illustrated breakfast table from Craftyard make a striking statement. “This is a small-contained space that has evolved overtime, as I started out with a completely blank canvas. I didn’t really plan how it turned out, so the colours you find in my space are ones that I naturally favour. You will find that there are a lot of neutrals, along with some primary colours. Moreover I only buy something when I truly love it and somehow they all gel well together,” our host explains while handing us a warm cup of coffee. We admire the detailed mirrored coffee table from Home Couture that sits proudly on a monochrome Miaco rug. An

antique, reupholstered love seat that has been with our host for 17 years adds a classic vibe to the space. Malik’s two adorable sons have noticeably marked their territory in the lounge, with their Call of Duty video games and Lego figures. The art deco pieces stand out against the muted furniture; the pieces as we are told, have been collected over the years or have been gifted by Malik’s mother. Two life-size, framed prints from Karl Lagerfeld’s book, The Little Black Jacket, dominate the main wall of the apartment. “Original prints of the book were available at the launch in Singapore. I instantly bought these two prints and I think my lounge would be incomplete without them, even though my kids find them really freaky,” our host laughs. Malik dotingly directs our attention to the sculptures of her two sons, Abdullah and Omer, placed on a wooden console. “We got these made when we were in Los Angeles for a holiday. We had to stand in line for a long time, but it was worth it in the end. I protect these two sculptures with my life,” she says while gazing at them lovingly. We start inquiring about Malik’s favourite piece in the corner, to which she answers: “I love each and every piece, but right now it will have to be the Farhan Manto chalk painting that I got recently. I think it makes the entire room pop and I enjoy looking at it immensely while I’m having dinner,” Malik states. For Malik, setting up her corner was all about surrounding her small family with meaningful things, and this she believes, contributes to their happiness. We leave in high spirits, touched by this cosy yet vibrant apartment full of warm memories, true love and the simple adventures of a family.

BEAUTY
The fluorescent make-up Electric looks are making a comeback into the world of make-up. Neon coloured eyes and lips give that ultra-vibrant look, which is both strong and feminine.
The smoky eye
Samah Mudasar, the young and talented make-up artist, shares her seven favourite make-up trends this winter!
The arty liner This trending new dimension to the classic eyeliner is all the rage. Transform your eyeliner into modern and graphic strokes. From straight lines to sharp angles, make-up artists are reworking the traditional form of brush stroke-style.
The dark lip Drawing attention to the lips always makes the face look more harmonious. Dark lips are all the rage this season; celebrities and makeup artists around the world have been seen wearing burgundy, maroon, black and navy lipstick. Enjoy experimenting this winter!
The smoky eye never goes out of fashion. This winter, try the smoky eye in rich shades such as black, rust, burnt orange and burgundy. Pick your favourite colour and go all out. Get ready to raise the temperature.
The silver touch These subtle touches can add so much character to your look. Whether it’s a light stroke under the eye, or a thick liner, the metallic silver touch is all you need this season to stay on trend.
The glossy lip Winter is known for the dryness it comes with, so why not gloss up the lips. Glossy lips are everyone’s go-to this season, and the ultra-wet look is a big yes!
The glitter eye Upgrade your beauty kit with lots of sparkle and shine. Whether you prefer monochrome or want to incorporate all the colours of the rainbow, be sure to rock that glittery eye this season. DECEMBER 11-17 2016
