WITH WASIM AKRAM The celebrated cricketer breaks his day down for us. From breakfast with his family, to shooting for his TV show and flying off for a cricket series the next day, the life of this legend sure is action-packed — and like most of Pakistan, we can’t get enough!
6am: Time to wake up. No matter where I am in the world, I am always up between 6am and 6:30am. I am constantly on the go – one minute I’ll be in the bustling streets of Melbourne and the next minute, the quiet countryside in England. But, whether I’m at a seaside in Australia or in the middle of a jungle in Sri Lanka, I’m a creature of habit, and one thing is for sure: I’m an early riser.
7am: As soon as I wake up, I can’t wait to see Aiyla. I make sure it is the first thing I do when I’m up and she is always sitting in bed waiting for me, greeting me with the biggest smile. She is the best start to my day! I then wake up Shaniera for our morning run. We get in the car with our iPods and water
bottles, and head out for an eight-kilometre run.
9am: We get back home, shower and then meet for breakfast. Our morning meal usually consists of coconut water, muesli (Shaniera makes her own organic muesli), eggs, toast, keema and a mix of beetroot, carrot and apple juice. We always sit together for breakfast and chat about the day ahead of us over some green tea.
10am: Today we are doing all of our shopping. Shaniera and I go over what items are needed in the house and we then head out to the shops. I love helping out with the house when I’m home in Karachi.

12noon: I’m on my way for my monthly visit at NGents — this is ‘me’ time. Zair is opening earlier for me and meets me at the door with a smile. I get my haircut, a pedicure and a shave. I really enjoy going to NGents as they are very professional and know exactly how I like my hair.
2pm: I meet Shaniera and the kids at home for lunch. Today we are having roast chicken with Shaniera’s rosemary and garlic-roasted potatoes as per the children’s request. With this we also have a big green salad, and of course some daal chawal.
3pm: When I am on holiday, I always take an afternoon nap. Even if I don’t sleep, I still rest for an hour by reading or just lying down and listening to music.
4pm: Off to the gym! Today my son Tahmoor is accompanying me.
6pm: I’m going to a fitting for a commercial I am filming tomorrow. This is something I do often these days. My designer is Sahaib & Farhan, and they are so good at their job! I don’t tell them what is needed — they come up with the best ideas themselves. The style they usually choose is modern, edgy and unique. They are going to be a huge deal, real soon.
7pm: I just came back from a meeting to see the final cut of an episode of my show, The Sportsman, which recently launched. I’m super excited about being a part of this show, and really hope you all enjoy it!
8pm: I surprise Shaniera with a big bouquet of flowers. She loves surprises and loves flowers even more. It’s been a great start to a fantastic evening.
9pm: We say goodnight to Aiyla and the children, and head out to a friend’s house before dinner. We normally eat around 8:30pm, but tonight is our good friend Rameez’s birthday, so we are meeting him a little later in the night.
10pm: We arrive at our favourite restaurant, Okra, and meet our friends. Tonight I’m having my favourite dish, the ‘Red Snapper’. I’m so hungry!
12am: We are heading home, and ready to sleep. Tomorrow I am flying off for a series. I hope we win this one! Good night everyone. 45

THE VAULT WITH MARIAM SHEIKH The bubbly and gifted jewellery designer, Mariam Sheikh of Jaipur and Co, talks to us about her love for jewellery and shares her stunning collection of polki, pearl and kundan pieces with us
How/when did you get interested in jewellery? My grandmother’s jewellery has always fascinated me. Her vault tells stories of travel, leisure and love. I belong to a generation of powerful women who live luxuriously; I love and wear all her pieces till date. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? My all-time favourite piece is my grandmother’s Columbian emerald ring, and later in life my engagement ring also topped my list of favourites. From my own designs, I love versatile pieces like the Victorian polki studs and the Victorian single line necklace. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? My engagement ring and wedding band has the most sentimental value for me, I never take them off. Especially when I’m traveling, it always reminds me of my husband. Share a story with us on how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? One of my favourite pieces is a Victorian polki necklace designed by Jaipur & Co. It is hand crafted to perfection and sourced by our artisans in India. It is a bold and minimalistic piece, and thus it is perfect for me. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? There are too many to list here. One of the reasons we developed Jaipur & Co was the growing inaccessibility of jewellery. The general security situation led to many people keeping their precious pieces at bank lockers and jewellery became more of a stress than anything else. I no longer obsess over individual pieces. I think jewellery should be fun and interchangeable with your mood and trends and not something that weighs you down. DECEMBER 18-24 2016

IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY WITH LEENA GHANI AND MAHEEN GHANI TASEER
Leena Ghani, talented make-up artist and painter, and her sister Maheen Ghani Taseer, the designer behind MGT by Maheen Taseer, share their bond. From playing dress up to making their own language, these two sisters are the perfect twosome What is your first memory of each other? Leena: When my parents first brought her home, I couldn’t get over how tiny she was and how big her eyelashes were. Maheen: I don’t have a particular memory, there are so many! I remember playing dress up in our house when we were really young. We would put tights on our hair and pretend like we have really long hair. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Leena: Maheen and I used to share a room together and once I woke up extra early so I could tape her to the bed. Of course she woke up half way in, but nevertheless I got what I wanted — to annoy her and take pictures to blackmail her later. Maheen: Even though she is older than me, we were more like friends growing up. We would make fun dances, imitate people and even make up funny languages only we could understand. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Leena: Luckily Maheen and I didn’t get punished much. Meera (our eldest sister) used to cover for us and protect us! Maheen: Not doing my homework on time and not sleeping on time. I would always shut my eyes when my parents would walk in and pretend to be asleep, but it was obvious because my laughter under the sheets would give it away. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Leena: I would take all my clothes back! Maheen: She has the best pair of jeans. If you could swap places with each other, what is the first thing you would do? Leena: If I could swap places with Maheen, I would go to Kim Kardashian’s Instagram account and unfollow her. Maheen: I would start painting. She is so talented and creative. I am always encouraging her to paint more because she is amazing at it. DECEMBER 18-24 2016
58
What is the one thing you love about your sister? Leena: Her sense of style, her confidence and the ability to get what she wants. Maheen: She is very kind hearted, funny and loves with all her heart. That is the most beautiful thing about her. She has always been the funny one in the house — she can make anyone laugh. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Leena: When we see each other after a fight we just start talking as if nothing happened. But to be fair I think that goes for all siblings. You can fight and bring the whole room down, but at the end of the day no one has your back like your siblings. Maheen: It depends on how bad the fight is. We both make up or usually we just become normal with time. What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too? Leena: Her ability to put people in their place without being rude. Maheen: We both act really well! Growing up we would put on shows and make up dances! Describe your sister in three words: Leena: Brave, determined and the biggest Shahbaz Taseer fan. Maheen: Loyal, talented and kind. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Leena: I would say Kim Kardashian because she’s fictional to me. Maheen: Angela Chase from My So-Called Life or Lorelai from Gilmore Girls. How are your personalities similar? Leena: Our sense of humour. Most people don’t get it though — it’s like a secret language! Maheen: Our personalities are not similar at all. She is very carefree and casual, and I love being super planned. I am also more formal and reserved. I can’t live without my sister because… Leena: Maheen is the baby of the family. She took her first step in front of me and since then I have seen her become a brave, courageous woman who stands up for herself and will do anything to protect the people she loves. Her strength has not only inspired me but so many others around her. We learn from each other but in the last five years she has taught me how to be patient. Maheen: She is the joy of our family, and I can’t imagine life without her.

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS
S
ania Maskatiya’s velvet tunic is from the designer’s latest winter festive collection. This classic black piece uses sequin and beaded embellishments on the shoulder, which gives the otherwise simple piece, a special detail. The trendy cut of the tunic and use of this season’s most loved fabric — velvet — gives this piece a touch of elegance. The top is certainly a wardrobe staple for the winter festive season.
WITH SANIA MASKATIYA
While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diơerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!
Alizé Munshi Pastry Chef
Black is my favourite colour to wear, especially on formal occasions or a night out. I am totally in love with this Sania Maskatiya top. As it is quite loosely fit, I opted to tuck it into my black velvet skinny pants. The top incorporated a little silver embroidery on the shoulder, so I thought that keeping it all black would help make the embellishment stand out more. I kept my make-up simple with just some black eyeliner. To complete my look I wore my black pointed heels and a black and gold Alexander McQueen clutch.

Blogger, and Creative Director at Mahvish Hasan Salon
Winter is here and that means we’ll be seeing a lot more velvet! I paired this gorgeous Sania Maskatiya creation with my favourite ripped jeans. I then wore a yellow Alexander McQueen clutch to add a pop of colour and toned it down with a pair of classic nude heels. For my make-up I went for a soft, feminine day look and for my hair I went for a voluminous blow-dry. I like my outfits to have minimal detailing but all the right cuts — and this tunic is all that and more! It’s perfect for a girl’s night out, as it can easily be dressed up or down depending on what your plans entail.
Arsha Asif
Fashion Creative Director, Daraz This season is all about velvet! I wanted to put together an outfit that would be a great option to wear to a daytime winter event. So first I paired this stunning Sania Maskatiya velvet tunic with sleek, white, flare pants and then wore bright orange heels to add a little bit of colour to the monochrome outfit. Keeping in line with my quirky style, I decided to add a tassel belt, which I believe gives my look, and this festive winter tunic, the perfect fall, fit and definition. I went for light eyes and a deep lip to complete my look for the chilly winter season.

THE CORNER WITH SAHER QADIR
The CEO, founder and designer of Esque, Saher Qadir, invites us to explore her studio, a special corner, where she spends time creating fascinating pieces of furniture
W
e head over to the home of the uber talented Saher Qadir. Our vivacious host greets us warmly, and walks us over to her cherished corner where we instantly feel a sense of positivity as we absorb the multi-coloured surrounding. While we walk over to her quirky workspace, she explains why she chooses this as her favourite space: “This is the space where I really get creative. The style of the area keeps changing but I always want it to be eyecatching and awe inspiring. Esque is my baby; I started it from scratch. A lot of sleep was lost, and blood and sweat went into getting it where it is now, so I want to showcase it in the best way possible.” Qadir’s space, true to her claim, is certainly beguiling. Our eyes bounce back and forth from one appealing sight to the next. The hard-to-miss neon Esque sign grabs our attention, “When I was thinking of what

sign I wanted for my brand, my fetish for neon seemed perfect. I have always had a thing for neon signs, I even had one in my college dorm,” Qadir says. A wall is decorated with sticky notes, in harmonious colours, ranging from tones of green, blue, red, yellow, purple, black, grey and even white. Esque’s most sought after design, the ‘Lucite Coffee Table’ made of acrylic, stands proudly against the sticky note wall, and on it we see a perfectly polished metallic fish in gold. Our eye moves onto a terracotta wall that showcases the stock for Qadir’s next exhibition. We spot a number of signature Esque products including the gold Caeser lamp, lion head bins in various colours, neon wall mirror frames. Bright fairy lights adorn the shelves and add a festive feel to the space. Qadir shares that the wall is her favourite element in this space: “The ‘Terracotta Warrior Wall’ to me is perfect as it holds every single one of my designs. Be it an old piece, a classic one, an experimental item or a brand new design, everything goes on the shelves of the ‘Terracotta Warrior Wall’ until they are sold. A piece that is unfortunately too big to fit on the wall and is my all-time favourite is called the ‘Shikar’ chair. The ‘Shikar’ chair has beautiful pheasants on it and reminds me of hunters, just like my late father.” We spot an intriguing wall painting right above the door. The bright green artwork is made from crushed metal and polished in high gloss. We can’t help but take another look at the fascinating piece of modern art. During our pleasurable conversation with Qadir, she shares that while this room is her working space, it is not restricted to just her. “Everyone in my house likes to come and hang out here. My mother comes and has a cup of tea with me here everyday, as she feels blissful being around happy and colourful designs. This is a room full of life, and it’s my pride,” she smiles.

THE NOTEPAD
MOVIES Hareem Farooq The best thing about Dobara Phir Se was that we all really got along in the girls house. Everyone had a place. Hareem was the messy child. We’d be cleaning up after her, putting sticky notes to remind her to do the dishes and waking her up in the morning. She is very easy to get along with, no ‘ugh my time in the mirror’ problem. We helped each other out and had each other’s back.
The renowned actress and model, Sanam Saeed, talks to us about what she has learnt about her co-stars on the sets of Dobara Phir Se
Ali Kazmi Ali talked a lot and I zoned out a lot. Kudos to him for being so positive, friendly, loving and kind. I think I was really mean sometimes because I just wasn’t in the mood to talk, and he would just talk relentlessly. But what I admire is that he never got defensive. I think he knew I didn’t mean it like that. When you’re feeling down he’s the person to be with, he’ll cheer you up with his energy.
Mehreen Jabbar Mehreen is great to work with because she really digs deep into all the characters, is always up for rehearsals and sticks to realistic characterisations. She gives very little direction, which is good sometimes but as an actor often times you crave a little bit of direction. She’s very softheated, giggly and a lot of fun to be around. To me she’s like a big sister and a ringmaster. I’d work with her in a heartbeat!
Tooba Siddiqui I have known Tooba for many years as we started modelling at the same time. We never interacted though; we would keep to ourselves. It was nice to spend time and work with a chill girl who was on my wavelength. Tooba would help us with styling tips and shopping — she made me buy $300 jeans! She’s fun to be around and she’s a great actress too. With Tooba and Hareem, there was none of the catty competition and drama.
Shaz Khan I did two scenes with Shaz in Mata-e-Jaan Hai Tu. He was bald back then and played the sleazy guy who hits on me at a party. In Dobara Phir Se I discovered he’s a ball of energy, who is really passionate about his work, and turns out we were in class three together! He was a scrawny jinga back then, who was really fast at running. Now he’s an Americanised gora whose body has completely transformed. He’s positive, has great energy and is a great dancer too.
Adeel Hussain Adeel and I started our acting careers together with Mehreen Jabbar, so I’ve known him for a while. He is very spontaneous and serious about his work. Sometimes you may not understand what he is doing but it comes off brilliantly on screen, so he knows his work thoroughly. Though, Adeel is very serious, I think spending time with us has helped him loosen up a bit. DECEMBER 18-24 2016
