Anatomy WITH

AREEBA HABIB

Fashion model and the girl with a charming personality, Areeba Habib, decodes her style. From how her style has transformed over the years, to the silhouettes she loves, this fashionista shares it all Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

body has become more balanced and toned now. I didn’t know anything about exercise or yoga while I was a student but after entering my modelling career, I’ve become aware of how my body needs to look on camera and so I always keep that in mind. Ultimately, I consider my body to be aesthetically perfect at this point of my life. How do you dress your body according to your body type? Since I am a ramp model, I believe it is my responsibility to pull off any look in the best possible way. I pay close attention to what I wear, which is why I keep myself updated on the most recent trends and make sure that I pick stylish items to wear according to my body type and according to the event I am attending.

How would you describe your body type? Interestingly enough, my body type differs in different weather. For example, even though I eat more in the winter, my body continues to remain fit but in the summer, even when I am following a diet regime and working out, I always feel like I am gaining weight. So, even though my body is naturally petite, my body shape varies in the winter and summer. How has your style changed over the years? My style has totally transformed over the years. When I started my career, I was a young student so I would dress how students dress on a regular basis. Now, however, I know how to dress elegantly and have learned how to conduct myself differently. Even my style of living has transformed because of my career. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body has changed immensely over the past five years. I had a lot of baby fat on my cheeks, which in fact, I got rid of only last year. Clean eating and exercising has really helped me achieve my fitness goals. I’ve noticed that my

49

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? For me, no one is really making a mistake per se. However, I am not fond of the fact that everyone becomes obsessed with one fashion item and/ or style at the same time, and aims to dress according to it. In fact, I think that majority of people here have good knowledge about how to dress for launches and parties but I don’t think people know how to dress appropriately

for award shows. A lot of people show up to the red carpet at award shows in bridal couture. So, I think that’s one area people can definitely work on. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? As of now, I don’t believe there is any troublesome area because I have worked hard to eliminate my least attractive features by following a healthy diet plan and regularly exercising. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Two-piece suits are one silhouette which suit my body the most. Other than that, pencil skirts and dresses suit me quite well too. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I’m not really shy about wearing anything in particular, especially since as ramp models, most girls like myself in the industry are used to wearing all sorts of clothes. Nevertheless, I don’t think I can ever see myself wearing a knotted t-shirt. I mean, let a t-shirt be what it is and skip the knotting part.

WITH

ALEENA AND ALIZEH AHMAD

Aleena Ahmad, a HR consultant and Alizeh Ahmad, a global health directorate are eight years apart, but the age difference doesn’t hold them back! From their childhood antics, to their favourite memories, these sisters share it all

What’s your first memory of each other? Aleena: I came before Alizeh so I remember when she was born, she was so tiny and cute all dressed in pink. Still makes my heart melt to think about it. Alizeh: Since Aleena apa is eight years older than me, my first memory is quite blurry. What I do remember is that when she was in a room, her presence commanded everyone’s attention! She really is a force to be reckoned with.

as a child, aside from the odd scolding here and there,#goldenchild.

What is the craziest thing you have done together? Aleena: I’d rather not get into that here. Alizeh: Some secrets are never meant to be shared.

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Aleena: Go buy size zero clothing (Oh, and the joy of being able to wear tees). Alizeh: I’ve got about a million fears so definitely something adventurous and out of my comfort zone; deep sea diving or bungee jumping perhaps.

What did you get punished for the most as a child? Aleena: Boys, boys, boys. Haha! Alizeh: Hmm, I can’t remember being punished

If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life from the others closet, what would it be? Aleena: It would have to be one of Alizeh’s comfy, slouchy, oversized sweaters (she has a dozen I’d steal, so can’t think of one). Alizeh: Do shoes count?

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Aleena: I love that she’s my best friend even though we are eight years apart; I can tell her anything and she’s wise enough to understand. She’s always been my pillar and I can’t imagine going through life without her. Alizeh: She’s not just my sister, she’s my best friend. It’s amazing how she’s my partner in crime but my voice of reason, all intertwined into one! If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Aleena: We don’t really fight (is that weird?). I can’t remember the last time we fought. Alizeh: Is it odd that I can’t remember the last time we fought? What is the one secret talent your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Aleena: Her ability to comprehend situations and act accordingly - she’s so smart, Goddammit! Alizeh: The ability to compartmentalise her emotions

57

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

and think about any situation in a rational manner. She is my go to person all the time. Describe your sibling in three words: Aleena: Intelligent, loving, beautiful. Alizeh: Strong-minded, crazy, a hugger. Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Aleena: A minion! Alizeh: That’s a toughie but I’d have to go with Dory. How are your personalities similar? Aleena: We are both super chatty and confident and will always find the same stuff funny. Alizeh: Put us in a room together and we can laugh about anything! We’re both are extroverts, super independent and love talking (safe to say there’s never a dull moment). I can’t live without my sister because… Aleena: She is the yin to my yan, the pot to my pie and my very own sanity checker! Alizeh: She’s my sister-mom-BFFtherapist all clumped into one!

INTERVIEW

After

Hours with

Urwa Hocane & Bilal Ashraf

The much-anticipated release of Rangreza is right around the corner and fans can hardly wait. Directed by Amir Mohiuddin, the film is one of the first romantic musicals in Pakistan, packed with drama, action, romance and comedy. As we await its release, we catch up with Urwa Hocane and Bilal Ashraf behind the scenes to talk about their upcoming film What did you think of Rangreza’s script when you first read it? Urwa: I read through the whole script in three hours! It was very engaging and interesting. I go with my instinct; I got the right feeling after reading the script and instantly called my director and said yes. Bilal: It’s a very challenging role and a very intense character, nothing like what I’ve done before. When I heard the names of the rest of the cast it made me feel like I’m the dark horse haha. But my director Amir Mohiuddin and the writer Akhtar Qayoom really believed in me and had a huge hand in convincing me to do it. How would you describe your character in the movie? Urwa: My character is called Reshmi. She’s a simple girl next door but there are many layers to her character – she’s all about love and family values, but what makes her stand out is how she deals with intense situations. Bilal: Ali Zain, the character I’m playing is a kind of a

rebel who is a pop rock star, who takes you on a musical journey. You’ll see many shades of drama, intense romance, comedy and a little bit of action through him – it’s a very relatable character. How is Rangreza different from other romanticmusicals? Urwa: I’ve never done a romantic-musical and I don’t think there has ever been a romantic-musical in Pakistan that’s been a true love story. Rangreza is truly a one of a kind love story - the music in the film really elaborates and defines the characters and helps in the story telling process, definitely not something you’ve ever seen before! Bilal: You don’t see many romantic-musicals in Pakistan, they’re very rare but speaking of Rangreza it’s a complete film. Apart from the music, the actors have gotten the message across brilliantly with their acting. Whether it’s different or not you’re going to have to watch it for yourself and decide. DECEMBER 3-9 2017

58

What can we expect from your characters in the movie? Urwa: I think everybody’s done their best altogether – we were true to the essence of storytelling and how the story should come across. This film is bound to trigger a lot of emotions. Bilal: You’ll constantly be guessing what’s next! The film will keep you engrossed throughout – expect romance, drama, action and comedy. You play a musician in the movie, how did you prepare for the character? Bilal: I looked up a lot of YouTube videos of Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Rock of Ages. But I think I really took inspiration from some of our own artists; Junoon and Junaid Jamshed particularly. In fact, I dedicate my Rangreza title track performance to Junaid Jamshed – I’m a huge fan! I spent a lot of time with hardcore musicians, from tabla players to dholak players to some instrument players that I didn’t even know existed. I learnt how to play the guitar and the piano so I’ve really tried to do my best - I hope everyone will like it. How have your characters strengthened you as actors? Urwa: My characters have made me who I am today. Every project I’ve been a part of has been a learning process and I feel like every director you work with always teaches you something new. So I’ve been very lucky in terms of the kind of work I’ve done and people I’ve worked with – it’s helped me understand a lot of things. Bilal: My role in Rangreza is very close to my heart. It’s the first role that I’ve done that has required me to go through every possible emotion. It really stretched and tested my limits and I’ve never worked this hard for any other character. So it’s really helped me realise all that I am capable of.

59

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

What’s the one trait your character has you wish you had too? Urwa: I think my character knows a lot about music and in real life I’m not a musician so I don’t know much. My husband, Farhan keeps teaching me so I had to learn a lot of the itsy bitsy details that someone with a musical background should know. So I wish I had that kind of knowledge. Bilal: I wish I could sing! How has it been working alongside each other? Urwa: It’s been lovely working with Bilal and Gohar. I would call it a wonderfully creative journey. We would discuss all our ideas and try to come up with new ways of improving whatever we were working on. All in all it was great. Bilal: It was fantastic working with them. This is my third film with Gohar and he also happens to be my closest friend in the industry and Urwa is a perfectionist. She would keep telling me to concentrate and give my best – so they both drove me to do my work better in their own ways. It was great to have such motivational and professional co-stars. Any memorable moments while shooting the movie? Urwa: I will never forget this entire journey – especially when it came to an end, it was very sad for all of us. There are too many memorable moments to ever forget this awesome experience. Bilal: When I was shooting for my title track there were about 2000 extras when I walked out onto the set and I was taken aback (in a good way of course)! It was crazy to see so many people there – that by far has been the best shooting experience I’ve had. One thing your fans don’t know about you? Urwa: I think I’m misunderstood by what I say sometimes – I don’t have the best choice of words. Bilal: I’m very camera-shy believe it or not! I don’t like big crowds but here I am haha. I’m trying to be brave! A character from any movie you wish you could play? Urwa: Umrao Jan or Kareena’s character from Jab we Met! Bilal: A villain from any Bond movie. Are there any exciting projects in the pipeline for you? Urwa: There are a lot of projects in the pipeline and I’m reading a lot of scripts right now so I’ll keep you all posted! Bilal: Yes! There are many things lined up but I’m just trying to decide whether I should do an action film next or a comedy film. So let’s see. DECEMBER 3-9 2017

Style 101 with Mina Hasan

With the festive season around the corner, there are so many trends that can be incorporated in your wedding season wardrobe. We got our hands on Mina Hasan’s latest collection and got Javeriya Hanif to play dress up with some of our favourite pieces. See how these gorgeous pieces were styled, just in time for wedding season!

This ensemble is an ode to old world glamour. The gharara teamed with velvet gives the look a traditional yet modern feel, and paired with a sheer dupatta it adds to the femininity of the ensemble. Definitely a hit in our books.

Who said florals were for spring? This piece is retro glam at its best. The flowing silk pants give the ensemble a vintage vibe and make it stand out, while the subtle embroidery and the asymmetrical hemline give it that modern twist! Javeriya opts for soft curls and statement earrings and she’s ready to go!

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

We love all things pastel and the modern spin on this little number. The subtle hue and the pink floral detailing make this ensemble perfect for a day event this winter season. Paired with statement pearl earrings, nude Louboutins and a bold lip, this look will take you from day to evening.

It’s the season for luxury, and what’s more luxurious than velvet? The threadwork and embellished detailing on the sleeves add that glam factor to the ensemble, while the scallop details make it oh-so-chic. The luxe velvet teamed with contrasting Manolo’s make this ensemble perfect for the festive season! While accessories are kept to a minimum, Javeriya’s look makes a big impact. TEdit loves!

DECEMBER 3-9 2017

Bold coloured velvet is making a come-back this winter! Ditch the basic black and opt for this season’s must-have silhouette in a deep emerald green palette. The delicate pearl detailing and floral embroidery with the gorgeous silhouette perfectly juxtapose a modern and traditional look. Javeriya pairs the ensemble with sparkly Louboutins and voila, tres Chic!

HSY appoints new CEO, hopes to make brand more dynamic HSY has appointed powerhouse professional Aalia Jafar as its chief executive officer to help the brand grow and consolidate the business of fashion. She brings with her a wealth of experience from her extensive exposure to the global fashion business, participation at fashion weeks in NYC, London and Paris as well as at global sourcing platforms. With Jafar’s appointment, HSY also announced that all other HSY projects such as show production, show choreography and event management will now be under the name of “HSY Entertainment”.

Gohar Rasheed to do ‘item song’ with 200 transgenders in ‘Rangreza’ The upcoming musical-romance Rangreza brings a dance number that might just top the charts for all the right reasons. Gohar Rasheed – playing Waseem Wallay in the film – will be seen dancing to Kalu alongside 200 transgenders. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Gohar revealed that as opposed to female item numbers in many Hollywood and Bollywood movies, “Waseem Walay is performing with 200 transgenders.” He further added that this was a huge step for him… to do an item number and that too, with so many transgenders. “The purpose behind Kalu is not to objectify anyone. The basic reason was to show and tell people that even these people – who unfortunately have to face certain stigmas in our society – are immensely talented,” stated the actor. We can’t to see how the film turns out!

Kendall Jenner dethrones Gisele Bündchen as world’s highest-paid model after 15 years In a rather surprising turn of events, Kendall Jenner has knocked Brazilian beauty Gisele Bündchen off of the top spot as the world’s highest paid model for the first time in 15 years. The catwalk queen and reality star, 22, has topped the annual Forbes list thanks to earnings of $22 million over the past year. Kendall’s earnings have more than doubled since the $10 million from last year, rendering her the highest-paid model already. The 37-yearold Gisele scored second place with $17.5 million, marking the first year she has not topped the list since 2002. The young supermodel is definitely going places!

Christian Louboutin draws inspiration from Lahore When Christian visited Pakistan earlier this year, it was under speculation that the maestro would be coming up with an avant-garde collection. Louboutin had been invited to dinner by Art Divvy Foundation and also made a visit to Lahore’s National College of Arts. Now his range of flat soled shoes called ‘Lahore Flats’ are definitely an ode to the country’s colourful culture and we couldn’t feel more proud!

Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter accused of rape Nick Carter, singer of the famous boy-band of the 90s, Backstreet Boys has been accused of rape. Former Dream member, Melissa Schuman claimed that Nick raped her back in 2002. Melissa was 18 and Nick was 22 at the alleged time of assault. Melissa mentioned that their record labels had set up a call for them because they thought the pair should date, however, she was already dating someone at the time. Melissa added that the Larger Than Life singer had invited her and a friend over for a “casual hangout” where they had a few drinks. He then invited her in to his recording studio to listen to some new music he had made. Later, he took her to the bathroom where he started to undress her while she pleaded him to stop. Her family tried to convince her to speak up in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein controversies but she only came forward after hearing that Nick was also accused of assaulting a fan in 2006.

Quratulain Balouch faces backlash on Twitter after abusing Imran Khan Famed Pakistani singer Quratulain Baloch faced backlash on micro-blogging site Twitter after she used a swear word for PTI chief Imran Khan. She used the expletive for Khan in response to a text video that focused on Ayesha Gulalai’s allegations against the cricketer-turned-politician. “Imran khan has become an a*****e,” she tweeted. The tweet did not sit well with Pakistani Twitterati, who slammed her in subsequent posts. We smell drrrama!
