From her favourite silhouettes to how her style has changed over the years, Anum shares it all! Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

DECEMBER 8-14 2019

28

How would you describe your body type? I have always been on the slimmer side, petite to be specific. Has your body type changed over the last five years? I am lucky to have good genes! But I y would say with regular work out my body has become stronger and fitter. How has your style changed over the years? For me comfort is key- my style has alwayss been trendy and classy. However, I don’tt el follow trends blindly. I wear whatever I feel comfortable in and style it my way. In your opinion, what is your most troublesome area? Being a national level swimmer at a young age and having an active work out regime now and good genes, I would say none. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I wear whatever I feel comfortable and confident in. I prefer well fitted clothes over oversized pieces because I feel they look better on me. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing? It’s important to be comfortable in what you wear. Whether you are following trends or not, as long as you are confident, you can pull off anyting. I strongly

29

DECEMBER 8-14 2019

believe, if you’re confident you can be the most under dressed person and still look and feel your best! Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I dress up according to my mood. I wear everything from fitted to loose clothes, if I want to amp up my look I opt for accessories. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I really don’t shy away from wearing anything, I am very confident style wise and I know what suits me and doesn’t. It’s important to know your body type and feel comfortable and confident.

With

Saira

Omar Khan Saira Omar talks about her passion and experiences Sa iences that led her to create unique, ottoman inspired jewellery er pieces Saira designs authentic calligraphy jewellery and pieces. incorpora incorporates semi-precious stones and unique elements that she believe believes will appeal to jewellery lovers How and when did you become H interested in jewellery? I became interested in jewellery when I realised people were hesitant in wearing semi-precious, statement jewellery pieces and costume jewellery. People felt the need to wear real pieces to show wealth and th needed to change! I then had the that most incredible dream and I knew I had to take this up. My friends who own the brand Ivy were having their first clothes exhibition and that is where the journey began. In October 2008 I had my first exhibition and the response was overwhelming. For me it was just being Saira with no surname attached to it and I let my creativity flow. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? My favourite pieces of jewellery from my own collection would be the pieces I displayed during my last exhibition named “Klimt” The pieces took over a year to be designed as I studied paintings in great detail. The lady in gold and tree of life are my favourites. I love the remix earrings and the cuff. I also love the Dervish dull gold earrings from my Forty Rules of Love exhibition.

Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? I would definitely say I am most attached to the Quranic case in gold given to me by my mother when I got married which was passed on to her by my grandmother. It’s something even all my diamonds cannot come near to! My mother put it on me and said” this will always protect my daughter and keep you safe” I intend to pass it to my daughter one day, InshAllah. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? The pieces I have always loved are the Tsar collections by Bolin especially the emeralds from Malysheva mines are divine, also the Faberge and Boucheron designs are amazing. I plan to see them at the Kremlin Museum, owning them albeit another ime. story perhaps for another lifetime.

Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? Oh the answer is easy, the “Birth of Ali” pendant. The Imam’s birth has always fascinated me since I was 12 as does his wisdom and bravery. The black cubes of onyx and golden topaz depicts the Holy Kaabah, the pearls are my respect for him, in the centre is Nad-e-Ali in calligraphy as it’s synonymous with him and the red rubies circling the pendant is my love for the Imam. It’s definitely my favourite and will always be. DECEMBER 8-14 2019

with Qirat Baber

Qirat Baber, a marketing graduate by education and make-up artist by profession never knew make-up was her true calling. We got in touch with Qirat to find out what inspired her to become a make-up artist, her area of expertise, the challenges she faces as a make-up artist and so much more! What inspired you to become a make-up artist and how has your journey been so far? Honestly, I had no idea I was going to be one; I wasn’t ever into girly things. I have brothers in the house so I always had the tom boy vibe. Slowly and gradually I started using my mom’s make-up and God knows when that became my passion and now my profession. I am not going to lie, the journey has been tough, there’s so much competition in the market and having to make yourself stand out and generate different content takes a whole lot of your life but it’s been an amazing journey where I keep learning and improving with each day. What is your area of expertise? I am all about the natural look. I am not a fan of cakey make-up at all. People come to me and tell me they love how natural my make-up is. What are some of the make-up and hair trends that your salon is offering? Out of all the trends, we love the no make-up, make-up look- fresh, clean and subtle. Opt for some beachy waves and you’ll be bang on trend. What are the challenges that come with your job and how do you overcome them? Dealing with different clients, making them understand your point of view, what you think will look nice. We do different faces every day and now my team and I can just DECEMBER 8-14 2019

tell by looking at people what they’ll be able to carry better. Convincing them is another story, sometimes they understand sometimes they don’t. Also everyone’s skin is different; people come with different images and expect to get exactly the same look which isn’t possible. We always try to explain it to them nicely and more often than not it works! Who or what is your greatest professional and personal strength? My friends and family are my personal strength. They always support me and encourage me. Professionally, there are too many to name. I look up to a lot of people and how they started from the bottom and have come so far. In your opinion, what social stigma does society need to get over? Colour - your colour does NOT define you!! We need to get out of this mind set. It is very important to feel comfortable in our own skin. Earlier everyone wished to have a light skin tone but that’s changing. I have seen a change, it might be 1% but it’s happening What is the most gratifying part of your job? Nothing is more gratifying than seeing your clients satisfied and happy with the hair and make-up look you give them.

Uber Loses Licence To Operate In London Uber will not be granted a new license to operate in London after repeated safety failure. The authorities found that more than 14,000 trips were taken with drivers who had faked their identity on the firm’s app. The regulator said the taxi app was not “fit and proper” as a license holder, despite having made a number of positive changes to its operations. Uber initially lost its license in 2017 but was granted two extensions, the most recent of which expired last week. The firm will appeal and can continue to operate during that process. London is one of Uber’s top five markets globally and it has about 45,000 drivers in the city. Overall, there are 126,000 licensed private hires and black cabs in the capital.

Twitter Furious Over Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 3’ Hurting Religious Sentiments #BoycottDabangg3 has been trending on Twitter since last week after a section of netizens expressed dismay over Salman Khan’s upcoming movie, claiming it hurts Hindu sentiments. They mentioned a scene in the song Hud Hud Dabangg, which shows sadhus (holy men) clad in saffron and dancing with guitars in their hands, is aimed at “maligning” and “insulting” Hindu culture, and hence demanded the boycott of the Sonakshi Sinha-starrer. The micro-blogging platform has been abuzz with angry tweets from users. One tweeted, “#BoycottDabangg3. In the film, sages have been depicted as dancing with Salman in a hideous and objectionable manner on the bank of a river. Some sages are shown playing guitar in a western style.” Another wrote, “Bollywood is doing all such miserable things for fame and money. They are not bothered about our religious sentiments. We have to make them think about this. Strong demand #BoycottDabangg3”. Some even demanded an apology from the film’s lead actor and co-producer Salman Khan.
