FASHION

Jza Malik Jza rocks the comfy-chic style in this monochrome silhouette. We love how she cleverly opts for a slimming pinstripe print. The ankle-boots take her look up a notch.

Misha Rehman Misha adds a pop of red to her black-and-white ensemble with a bag and belt. We give her extra points for those funky sunnies and white brogues.

Fashion Pakistan Week (FPW) Spring/Summer 2017 is almost here and as always, we are gearing up for all the exciting things each fashion week brings. From the red carpet, to the runway, and everything in between, we list the 10 things we are looking forward to most!

By Maha Rizvi

The Boss Lady

A Decade Of Excellence This year, FPW will celebrate its 10-year anniversary, and as is the case with any celebration, there is an expectation for the show to be bigger and better. This seems hopeful with the new council settling in, a line up of some of the most prestigious designers in the country and the introduction of some interesting new concepts. We wish all those participating behind-the-scenes and on the forefront, the very best of luck!

Nida Azwer was recently sworn in as the new CEO of the Fashion Pakistan Council. Being a super-successful and uber-talented designer herself, Azwer is a fine choice for this position. Though a hands on CEO, Azwer likes to stay calm, on top of her game, and always smiling. We wish this boss lady all the best, and can’t wait to see her smiling face in action at Fashion Pakistan Week 2017!

Flying Solo This season, the Fashion Pakistan Council will be introducing a new segment of ‘Sustaining Local Craft’ and ‘Ethical Fashion’ through a line-up of solo shows by leading designers.

Steal The Show It’s always exhilarating to watch a great show, and sit in anticipation as to what the showstoppers will be wearing. Even in an average collection, the showstoppers are usually dressed to the nines, and don the designer’s greatest pieces. FPW has seen some stunning showstoppers, from the show business’ brightest stars, like Mahira Khan and Mawra Hocane, to the music industry’s finest talents like Ali Sethi, to even empowering women like Mukhataran Mai. We look forward to seeing the glitterati on the runway!

Model Mode There are some familiar faces we never tire of, and favourite models are definitely on that list. Amna Babar, Cybil Chowdhry, Mehreen Syed, Nooray Bhatti, Areeba Habib, Rabia Butt, Javeria Hanif, Sadaf Kanwal and the list goes on. We look forward to seeing them all once again, ruling the runway.

Designers Who Don’t Disappoint FPW Spring/Summer 2017 will see the country’s most renowned fashion designers and retail brands showcase their latest prêt and luxury prêt collections. A designer whose collection we’re especially looking forward to is Bunto Kazmi. The queen of couture, whose designs never fail to impress, is returning to the runway after five years and we are certain, this will be a collection to remember. But that’s not all; our usual runway favourites will all be present. Get ready for Sana Safinaz’s glamour, Sonya Battla’s understated drama, Nida Azwer’s fine craftsmenship, Maheen Khan’s unmatched simplicity, Ayesha Farook Hashwani’s rich embellishments, Shehla Chatoor’s regal elegance and Umar Sayeed’s festival of colours.

They are also our favourite friends in the fashion world, who we are always happy to see ruling the red carpet and frowing right next to us. Rhythm Of The Beat As avid music lovers, we love how each designer puts together a playlist especially for their collections. The clothes and the vibe of the collection determine the soundtrack we hear, and it makes watching the showcase all the more exhilarating. We have even gotten to experience live performances right in the middle of the show. But whether it’s an upbeat playlist put together by DJ Shah, a live performance by Ali Sethi or a classical Mozart instrumental — we are excited to keep an ear out for what’s to come!

A Little Piece Of Heaven That’s what the delectable goodies feel like once you finally get off the red carpet and get seated for the show. One of our favourite things to do at fashion week, and sometimes the first thing we ever do is raid the little bag underneath our seats. We can’t wait to check out what goodies will be inside it this year.

Finally, I get an hour to myself for my workout. This is my ‘me-time.’ Exercise is sacred to me because it helps me centre my energy, release my anger and calm my mind. I do heavy weights, CrossFit and a lot of cardio. The more stressed I am, the harder I workout and the heavier I lift. For me, it’s not a workout — it’s therapy. I don’t care about being thin or all that aesthetic nonsense. I just want to be stronger in my mind and body.

How would you describe your body type? I would describe it as petite and slim. Has your body type changed over the last five years? All through my adult life, I’ve been skinny, and I used to maintain that through not eating and exercising enough. However, for the last one year I’ve started building my core by healthy eating and exercising. I’ve never been happier! My body feels confident, rejuvenated and fit. How has your style changed over the years? I have always loved experimenting with different looks and silhouettes. However, now I have somewhat developed my own personal style while understanding what suits my body, so I’d just say I’m much better dressed now. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? Mark Twain once said: “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” Self-assurance is a key trait to possess, so to answer your question, I love my body and I approve of myself! How do you dress your body according to your body type? Since I have a petite and slim frame, I usually avoid a massive load of fabric and super-boxy silhouettes. Even if I wear an item of clothing like that, I balance it out by wearing one thing that is extremely fitted. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Probably following trends blindly! Developing your personal style is very important if one wants to dress well. Personal style also comprises of a sound understanding of one’s body type, and the confidence to experiment. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Peplums — all day, everyday! What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I love heavy fabrics and flared silhouettes, but because of my height and frame, they need to be very strategically put together.

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS

T

his tropical green and fuch fuchsia tunic by Ideas Pret is certa certainly a st spring staple! The top is designed in the trendy, off-shoulder style, and features a contemporary slit in the centre of the silhouette. The use of vibrant colours and the airy feel of the top makes this the perfect piece to wear to anything from a fun night out to a casual beach vacation.

WITH IDEAS PRET

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diĆĄerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Anoushey Ashraf TV Presenter and Producer

I paired this beautiful and colourful Ideas Pret tunic with my black Marc Jacob wedges and distressed jeans from Zara. To style the top a bit differently, I tucked it into my jeans. I kept my accessories simple by only wearing a black clutch from Zara. For my hair, I went for a voluminous blow-dry and for my make-up I applied some light-gold eye shadow with winged eyeliner. I would wear this outfit to a dinner with my friends.

FEBRUARY 19-25 2017

56

Salima Feerasta Chief Editor and Founder, Karachista

I paired this Ideas Pret tunic with formal, wide-leg, black pants, bamboo-heel Gucci pumps and a purple and yellow Dolce & Gabbana handbag. I kept the accessories subtle by wearing art-deco style, black enamel earrings and a Hermès ‘Clic Clac’ bracelet. I went for a natural look for my make-up, and simply blow-dried my hair. I’d wear this outfit to a dinner with my friends or perhaps a product launch — it’s both striking yet relaxed.

Palwasha Yousuf Stylist, Meher’s Salon Keeping my style in mind, I paired the off-shoulder top with white, cropped jeans. I feel it adds more funk to the look, and gives it a semi formal feel at the same time. I wanted to do a day look. For day events I usually opt for subtle heels and my nude pumps keep the look classy instead of loud. Chokers are trending these days, so I added a pearl choker to complete my outfit. In terms of make-up, the natural look has always been my go-to. I simply dabbed on some BB cream for a natural glow, applied some liner and wore a pretty shade of pink lipstick. 57

THE CORNER WITH JEANETTE FARUQUE

The owner and head trainer at the popular and trendy fitness spot, Studio X, walks us through her favourite space — the state-of-the-art gym itself! By Maha Rizvi

O

n a sunny morning in Karachi, we make our way to Studio X, a gym that recently opened with much anticipation and accolade. The grey stonewalls, and the subtle aroma from the incense is calming, a contrast from the hustle and bustle we felt right outside the studio doors. We walk up to the first floor. Large windows, exhibiting the city’s majestic panoramic view leave us in awe. This also gives the space a contemporary feel. The large windows let in ample sunlight, which instantly brightens up the space. Our charming hostess, Jeanette Faruque walks in and seats us in a cosy, quaint lounge behind the studio. This space is dimly lit, and is enclosed with, dark wood, finely cut-out, extendable doors. This is a quiet corner, one that makes us forget that we are in a high-energy gym. Settled in, we ask Faruque, why she picked this space as her favourite: “This is where I spend most of my time, and this is where I feel happy as an individual, a human being, and as an achiever,” she says. The studio is furnished with great attention to detail, each floor has it’s own vibe. The grey stone from the reception is not present elsewhere. Instead, the large studio rooms have pristine, white walls, large, floor-to-ceiling windows, and colour incorporated through the savvy gym

equipment. The bathrooms and massage room are reflective of traditional, Turkish aesthetics, the latter adorned with an intricately detailed, teal wall mount. Faruque’s private office on the other hand, is reminiscent of a quaint, quirky coffee shop abroad, with understated black-andwhite furniture, and a large chalkboard she uses as her to-do list. This style is also incorporated in the trendy Juice Bar inside the gym. What is remarkable about the studio however, is how these ranging styles complement each other, and work together to create a truly spectacular corner. “My architect was Najmi-Bilgrami. We told them exactly what we wanted, and they put it all together. I wanted it to be different, and not like typical gyms. I wanted people to feel comfortable, happy, and at home. The architecture firm also did the entire interior, and they’re doing my house now too! I’m really happy with what they’ve done, I really identify with it. Initially, I used to tell them this is too fancy for me, I just want it to be simple, beautiful and classic. In the end, they gave me exactly that,” she says contently. Though the gym is a commercial structure, occupied by many, it is actually of great sentimental value to Faruque. “The first class I conducted here, it gave me a matchless feeling of satisfaction and achievement. The reason why I opened this place was because my classes were really packed and my clients were unhappy due to the token system we had to put in place because of it. When they came here for the first time, their joy made me feel like I’ve achieved so much,”she smiles. Faruque’s daughter, Fuzzy Faruque, is also a co-owner and instructor at Studio X, and as would be for any mother, working with her daughter has been one of the highlights of building Studio X. “My daughter was my inspiration to open a bigger place. I’ve always had a problem with trainers, as it’s difficult to retain them because they get trained and want open their own gym, but Fuzzy helped me a lot — young blood is always able to bring a lot to a new place. More than anything though, there’s nothing like working with your daughter. I’d like her to takeover one day,” she says proudly. As our conversation comes to an end, we congratulate Faruque on building her dream studio, and ask if she would change anything about it. She laughingly answers: “Well…the only thing is that I would like an even bigger place — the classes are still packed!”

THE NOTEPAD The exceptional photographer behind Humans Of Karachi, Khaula Jamil, jots down the things that inspire her photography Conversations Sometimes when I am talking to someone, I immediately start thinking about it in visuals. At times it feels like a movie of what they are saying runs through my head. People and conversations are some of my greatest inspirations. Whether it is friends, family or strangers on the streets of Karachi, conversations are very importanttome.

Travelling When you are a storyteller, it is inevitable that there will be an inner hunger to travel to every corner of the earth, observing people, different cultures and their histories. Ever since I got into photography seriously, I have tried to make it a point to visit at least one new place each year.

iPhone Written material

Sometimes I don’t want to lug around a heavy camera and still really want to take photographs. Sometimes you can totally miss a moment or disrupt a really crucial and beautiful scene if you pull out a huge camera, but with a nifty iPhone, you can take excellent quality pictures really quickly. It has inspired me to go way further in my street photography than I would have ever gone with my SLR.

Art/Design and Film

History

Be it a fantastic commercial, a good advertising print campaign, a good film or art hanging on walls, this is something I am constantly looking at for inspiration. I actively visit galleries and museums in various countries, attend talks and watch short films. I thoroughly enjoy it — you never know where your next idea may come from.

Whether it is looking at the work of masters like Robert Frank or William Klien, reading about when Karachi was once called Kolachi, visiting Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, immersing myself in stories from the Holocaust while in Berlin or the Bosnian War when I’m in Sarajevo, the past inspires me to no end. So much of my work has to do with nostalgia and memories. It is what brings a certain richness and texture to my thought process.

Karachi Today, people know me as ‘that Humans of Karachi girl’. I happily embrace that title (even though it is a bit embarrassing at times). Karachi has always somehow been the centre of my projects, whether it is a passion project or a commissioned assignment. This city and the energy I feel here, has been key in all my works.

Not necessarily books, but having been a literature student, a good poem, prose, haiku, thought or reflection can go a long way with me. Even new words like those in the Dictionary Of Obscure Sorrows makes me dive into a different world where I visualise what I am reading.
