Anatomy Mushk Kaleem WITH
Talented fashion model and rising star, Mushk Kaleem had a massive year in 2019 and is going on to bigger and better things this year. She has the most fashion-forward Instagram feed and serves major style inspo on a regular. And so, she talks to us about her love for flowy silhouettes and her favourite trends Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage FEBRUARY 16-22 2020
22
How would you describe your body type? My body type is close to what I would call the stereotypical ‘model’ type. I’m 5 ft 11 with a narrow waist and limbs that go on for days. I try to keep my body in shape, but as you grow so does your body. So my lower body is much longer than my upper body! Has your body type changed over the last five years? 100%. Growing up I was almost anorexic. I guess a part of me was struggling with body image issues. Now I’m slightly broader around my hips and thighs, which takes away from the ‘unhealthy’ skinny look, but still skinny. I’ve always been lean and petite, and I am hoping that my body stays like that. How has your style changed over the years? I think more or less my style has been pretty basic and easy breezy. I haven’t yet found myself diving into prints. So I stick to colour blocking or monotones for my outfits. But I think all in all my fashion ideology is ‘stay comfortable, confident and classy.’ How do you dress according to your body type? I try to accentuate my waist, my collarbones and my legs as much as I can. I do believe they are my most attractive physical features. So I wear leaner, longer, flowy silhouettes but when I feel like baring a bit of skin, I can go for tiny cocktail dresses and a long slit here and there. It really has to do with the kind of mood I’m in. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing up here? I believe people here believe that just because one outfit looks good on a certain body and face that it’ll look good on just anybody. You need to dress according to your own structure and frame and feel confident. Your body adapts to your clothes, only if you’re confident in it. You could be wearing a banana suit, but if you wear it with confidence, you can make that work. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Anything long, fitted and flowy. I believe that one of the biggest advantages of being tall is that almost anything you don on your body, will frame nicely. I like a good fit here and there. I’m still obsessed with tiny waists and shoulder pads, so anything that highlights my waist and makes me look taller than I am is something I’ll always be up for wearing.

FEBRUARY 16-22 2020
What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I shy away from prints and stripes, but silhouette wise; I don’t think there’s anything I can’t manage. I’ve always been open to experimenting with my outfits and my style. I might now want to see myself in something frilly and with a lot of flare. I just have a personal preference of choosing sleeker looks over more voluminous ones.

Fiza Faran Faran Sadiq
Fiza is a leading expert in the development sector advising multiple UN agencies, government and private sector companies on issues such as women empowerment, climate change and sustainability; bearing multiple national and global titles including being the youngest advisor to UN Secretary General and being acknowledged by Forbes Magazine 30 under 30 List of Social Entrepreneurs twice. Faran thrives in the banking industry and currently works with Allied Bank within their corporate finance team. As a couple - Fiza and Faran are a true example of “opposites attract”. Being poles apart professionally and personally they bring the perfect balance and harmony to each other’s life. Fiza and Faran share with us their story of love and friendship. FEBRUARY 16-22 2020

Faran: We were friends for years before the seriousness in our relationship came in. It was like deciding to marry your best friend!
How do you demonstrate your love in different ways?
How and where did you both first meet? Fiza: Back in 2003! LUMS first day, first show. Faran: We became friends during orientation week of LUMS- so 16 years ago!
What did you like/ dislike about each other in your first meeting? Fiza: For me, I saw Faran for the first time when he was playing volleyball. Little did the man know that his future wife had spotted him right there. Even when we became friends there were more things that I liked about him than disliked. Faran: We clicked immediately from our first meeting, there was some exam the next day and we studied throughout the night. It was the two of us and another friend Adeel (still our best friend), the three of us were inseparable from day one at LUMS.
How long did it take to decide that he/ she was the one you wanted to marry? Fiza: To be honest, for me it was love at first sight kind of weirdness . All my friends still laugh about my “ting ting”- the feeling I had from day one that I wanted to marry this guy!
25
FEBRUARY 16-22 2020
Fiza: Faran and I are 180 degrees apart when it comes to our personalities. While I am super expressive and never miss a chance to express my feelings out loud, Faran has his subtle ways of telling me how much I mean to him. Faran: We love each other and it’s just there- I don’t feel the need to demonstrate that love again and again. It’s always there!
What frustrates you most about your partner? Fiza: Well since we are poles apart as people, our differences are the best thing about our relationship because Faran is everything I am not and vice versa. However at times it gets frustrating too. I must say those times are rare (fingers crossed). Faran: Her stubbornness.
Who makes up first if you have a fight or argument? Fiza: Me! I don’t think Faran has ever said sorry but then again he doesn’t end up in situations that require a “sorry” often. Faran: When in disagreement, I choose to stay quiet. That helps not pushing to the next stage of fighting! Often works but if not, then sleeping over it is always better than saying sorry.
One thing you love about each other? Fiza: The fact that he brings calmness, peace and balance in my life. I would otherwise drive myself crazy with the madness in me but
Faran strikes the perfect balance with sensibility and logic! Also his trust and belief in me makes me the woman I am today. Faran: Her energy, her passion for life, and her confidence- the way she shines up a dull room just by being there!
Something you would want to change about your partner? Fiza: Definitely reduce the time he spends in the bathroom. Faran: Her consistent planning! It would be nice at times to not have a plan…to just sit there and “do nothing”.
Something you two have in common? Fiza: Loving our daily workouts and then binging like there is no tomorrow! Faran: Our beautiful baby daughter - Erina!
Who keeps the room the tidiest? Fiza: Definitely me! When I travel and come back after a week, everything is exactly where I left it. Don’t know if that is a good thing or not though! Faran: Well that would not be me.
Your best memory together so far? Fiza: Hmm..we have nearly two decades of memories. There is not just one, but many memories while travelling together. Faran: Far too many to mention here but I feel now with Erina, we are making new memories that will surpass all the previous ones by far!
Your greatest strength as a couple? Fiza: The trust that binds us together! Faran: That we are perfect opposites- completing each other in many ways.
Describe your relationship in three words? Fiza: Fulfilling, enabling and evolving. Faran: I will say it in two words…. Opposites attract!

How to make your wardrobe
sustainable in 2020
e all love fashion but the impact it has on the environment is overwhelming to say the least. While the international fashion industry is working towards achieving sustainability in fashion, Pakistan has a long way to go. Sustainable fashion has become an increasingly talked about topic and it is about time that discussion surrounding the topic is brought to the forefront. Each year, the fashion industry churns out non-recyclable and non-compostable clothing in abundance which in turn has a detrimental impact on the environment. According to one report, buyers consume 400 per cent more clothes than they did 20 years ago. But now, with environmentalism on the rise, so is the concept of sustainable fashion. Designers, retailers and fashion houses are now moving towards sustainable fashion and creating clothes that are recyclable, wearable and put minimum strain on the environment. But with the culture of fast fashion, it’s not an easy feat. While we slowly move towards a huge movement, that is sustainable fashion, there are a few things you can do within your own homes and closets, to contribute towards sustainable fashion.

1. Shop Smarter We all have the tendency to shop as each new season turns. Throughout the year, high-street retailers and brands will have sales and of course, there’s nothing more tempting than a sale. But in an attempt to have a more sustainable wardrobe, it always helps to shop smart. Look for better quality items that are more durable and will last you for longer than one fashion cycle. This way, you’ll be less likely to throw out old clothes sooner. You can also swap clothes with family and friends, which will not only extend the life of your garments, but it will also give you a fresh new wardrobe with pieces that you haven’t worn before.
2. Restyle Your Wardrobe Restyling your wardrobe will give you a fresh take on the pieces you already own. You can get your friends to look at the items you have in your wardrobe and ask them how they would style them or pair them differently. Social media is your oyster so browse different fashion blogs to see how you can pair different garments together and you’ll be surprised at the variety of ways in which you can pair different colour combinations. Another way to add a fresh spin on your existing wardrobe is to invest in statement accessories which will not only enhance your look, but also add a luxe feel to it.
3. Care For Your Clothing Taking extra care of your clothing will take you a long way when it comes to curating a sustainable closet. If you take the time to read the care instructions on your clothing labels and follow them, your clothes will last longer. Hand washing might be taxing, but it will ensure that the lifespan of your clothing is prolonged. Also opt for sustainable detergents as conventional detergents contain substances that are harmful to people’s health and the environment. Investing in a small hand steamer will also give life to your garments and make them feel fresh and new again.
4. Try the 30 Wear Challenge Challenge yourself to only buy pieces you think you’ll wear at least 30 times. Break the trend of purchasing single-use pieces or pieces that you’ll only wear a few times and dispose of. Once you read about and understand the process whereby a garment is made and the disruption it causes to the environment, you will quickly understand that single use pieces are not the way forward. Completing the 30 wear challenge will also allow you to play around with your styling and become more creative with your look each time you wear it.

Eat Stop Eat Repeat Intermittent Fasting After Keto diet, intermittent fasting is the latest fad to gain popularity, however unlike Keto, intermittent fasting (if done the right way) has only shown positive benefits and results. Before we highlight the benefits of intermittent fasting, let’s dig into what exactly intermittent fasting is. When we talk about intermittent fasting, the first question that often pops in someone’s mind is if intermittent fasting is starvation. The simple answer is no. Fasting and starvation have one significant difference; control. Starvation is the involuntarily absence of food intake in your system for a long time. While fasting on the other hand is done voluntarily, be it for spiritual, health or other reasons. Intermittent fasting should be done by someone who has enough stored body fat to live off. If intermittent fasting is done the right way, it should and would not cause suffering. Intermittent fasting is as simple as it sounds. It’s not something unusual nor is it confusing, it is and can be a part of everyday, normal life. It is perhaps the oldest and most powerful dietary intervention imaginable. Yet somehow we have missed it and overlooked its therapeutic potential for a long time.
Eat Fast
Learning how it works gives you a clear idea if you want to incorporate intermittent fasting in your everyday life or not. To put it simply, intermittent fasting simply allows the body to utilise its stored energy (for example, by burning off excess body fat). It is important to realise that this is normal and humans have evolved to fast for shorter time periods – hours or days – without detrimental health consequences. Body fat is merely food energy that has been stored. If you don’t eat, your body will simply “eat” its own fat for energy. Life is about balance. The same applies to eating and fasting. Fasting, after all, is the flip side of eating. If you are not eating, you are fasting. Here’s how it works When we eat, more food energy is ingested than can immediately be used. Some of this energy must be stored away for later use. If we start eating the minute we roll out of bed, and do not stop until we go to sleep, we spend almost all our time in the fed state. Over time, we may gain weight, because we have not allowed our body any time to burn stored food energy. To restore balance or to lose weight, we may simply need to increase the amount of time spent burning food energy. That’s intermittent fasting. FEBRUARY 16-22 2020

Intermittent Fasting Benefits The most obvious benefit of intermittent fasting is weight loss. However, there are many other potential advantages beyond this. Read below how opting for intermittent fasting can be beneficial for you.
• Weight and body fat loss • Increased fat burning • Lower insulin and sugar levels • Possibly reversal of type two diabetes • Possibly improved mental clarity and concentration • Possibly increased energy • Possibly an improved blood cholesterol profile • Possibly longer life • Possibly reduction of inflammation Where diets can be hard and confusing to manage in the long run, intermittent fasting is easily manageable. Where diets can be expensive, intermittent fasting can be free. Where diets can take time, fasting saves time. Where diets may be limited in their availability, fasting is available anywhere. And as discussed earlier, fasting is a potentially powerful method for lowering insulin and decreasing body weight.

The outfit bore the names of Lulu Wang, Greta Gerwing, Lorene Scafaria, Marielle Heller, Alma Har’el and Mari Diop.
Fahad Hussayn loses eponymous brand to bankruptcy After a decade of decadence in the realm of fashion, ace couturier Fahad Hussayn has announced that he will be shutting down his brand owing to bankruptcy. In a lengthy, heartfelt Instagram post, the designer paid homage to his 10 long years in the industry, during which he admittedly failed to learn the ropes of sustaining a business model. “For as long as I can remember, art and fashion is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” he captioned the post leading up to the announcement. “Spending more than a decade learning the crafts and building my brand to what I always thought it should be, I completely failed to realise my biggest shortcoming – as an artist, I’ve struggled with business skills.” Having launched his last opulent collection Labyagawachi just a few months prior, the announcement comes as a surprise – the designer even showed at a fashion week that wrapped up in December 2019. Now, his brand’s Instagram profile reads ‘closed for business’.
‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ free from legal turmoil The Legend of Maula Jatt has finally been freed from all the legal entanglements after Sarwer Bhatti, the producer of the original film withdrew all cases. Bhatti has denied all rumours of a financial settlement between himself and the producers. Bhatti has instead attributed the decision on his desire for the welfare of local cinema. “In my career I struggled a lot for the welfare of local cinema and film industry, If the film industry could be strengthened by withdrawing the case, then I will do so. Also surely more volume of local releases across the country would benefit the industry-Bhatti”. The main producers of The Legend of Maula Jatt, Ammara Hikmat and Bilal Lashari were embroiled in a two year legal battle with Bhatti. The latter had filed a case over copyright infringement, claiming that his company Bahoo Films owned the rights to the Maula Jatt story. As a result The Legend of Maula Jatt‘s release was blocked. “I allowed them for using copy rights of only my film Maula Jatt and also asked them to take back the cases they filed against me. They and their parents had approached me. When our own children make mistakes, we forgive them. Both Bilal and Ammara are like my own children so I forgive them,” he said.
