LIFE STYLE

With

Souchaj

Deriving inspiration from Pakistan’s culture and heritage, Souchaj has put forward some exceptionally classic and elegant designs which lead to the label winning acclaim in a short span of time. We catch up with Mehr Khan and Mehak Malik to talk about the evolution of their fashion label, Souchaj, the design process and their vision for the future

FEBRUARY 17-23 2019

34

How did you two come together to embark on the journey of creating Souchaj? Our husbands supported and encouraged us for something more than ‘round the clock’ jobs and that is how it all took off. How has your work evolved since you began your own label? In the past two years, taking inspiration from our rich tradition, culture and heritage, Souchaj has introduced bridal couture and luxury formalwear that exudes class and elegance. True to its name, the brand itself stands for, “Soucha” meaning pure and “Chajj” meaning perfection and love for finesse. During this time, we have not only developed in design and creativity but our systems and procedures have also become more professional and defined. Hierarchy has also developed which is rather flat but very efficient. What is the best lesson you have learned along the way? The best lesson that we’ve learned is that there are no mistakes, only lessons. Even if something goes wrong, we take it as a challenge and work it into something beautiful. The designs that you create are incredible, who and what do you consider your inspiration? Staying true to our traditional Pakistani roots, we came up with the idea of Souchaj. Our main design philosophy is our classic handwork combined with the use of timeless silhouettes featuring luxe fabric and exotic colours through which the sheer richness of our culture shines through. Our biggest inspiration is nature and besides that, we derive inspiration from pieces of art as well such as sculptures and paintings. Where do you see Souchaj in the next five years? I would really want to see our label

35

FEBRUARY 17-23 2019

being associated with originality and purity all over the globe, and for its beautiful name Souchaj, to be spoken only in the upper echelons of the fashion industry. What is the typical design process like for team Souchaj? Inspiration doesn’t always just happen at the snap of a finger. The key to creating a great collection is to understand the customer’s needs and preferences. Usually our design process starts with global research and forecasting followed by the local market fads. Inspiration can come from anywhere and anything no matter how beautiful or bizarre it is. The philosophy behind our design process is very much innate and subjective and it remains close to the local roots and culture that is the core essence of the brand. How would you describe current Pakistani fashion aesthetics? The consumer in Pakistan is very fashion savvy and completely abreast with the latest fashions trends around the globe. At the same time they value their heritage and tradition so embrace contemporary with traditional very well. If you could pick anyone from history, (living or deceased, from fiction or reality), who would you most love to see wearing your designs? I would love to dress Queen Rania of Jordan. There is no doubt that she is one of the most stylish royals in the world. In your opinion what are the pros and cons of running a business as friends? Our relationship has only become stronger than before. There are no formalities as we have become more upfront with each other and that has really done wonders for us as a team. What’s next for the brand? Success!

FITNESS

With

Hadiyya Aazer PR guru and the lady behind Social.inc, Hadiyya Aazer talks to us about her weight loss journey. Growing up with a sweet tooth, Hadiyya still manages to enjoy her sinful desserts without altering her healthy habits. She shares with us her achievements, struggles and future health goals

What caused your weight to spiral out of control? I have always been a little overweight. I have always loved to eat and have had a major sweet tooth since childhood. At what point did you decide it was time to start losing weight? When I turned 30 last year, I thought to myself if I don’t lose weight now, I will end up developing health issues which I don’t want. What have been your greatest obstacles in the process of losing weight? Because of my weight, I used to feel tired and exhausted after working out. My knees would ache and so would my back but I was determined to stay focused. Thanks to my trainer Haseeb Mirza, for always keeping me motivated and pushing me towards my goal. FEBRUARY 17-23 2019

42

What goals did you achieve this past year? I started my weight loss journey in July 2018 and I have lost 32kg since. What specific changes have you made that are working for you? Portion control and working out first thing in the morning. What is your best piece of advice for those just starting to exercise? If you think you can’t do it because you are overweight, you are telling yourself a lie. I was 120kg when I started exercising and if I can do it you can too. What is your favourite healthy food to eat? I’m not a fan of cooking so I like easy meals. My favourite is two boiled eggs along with a cucumber. What is your favourite cheat meal? I don’t really do cheat meals; more like cheat bites I’d say. If I’m craving something I would take one bite of that. As I have a sweet tooth I’m almost always craving something sweet so rather than having a whole dessert, I just treat myself to one bite and I’m good. What is your least favourite healthy food to eat? Green veggies. When it comes to eating well what are your top recommendations? Try to drink as much water as you can. Vegetables are important, because if

43

FEBRUARY 17-23 2019

you don’t eat your vegetables, you will end up getting constipated. How do you manage to make time for yourself between parenting and working? It’s important to plan your day. I work out first thing in the morning and that keeps me active throughout the day. What is your favourite form of cardiovascular exercise and why? My favourite form of cardio is workout ropes and jumping jacks. I enjoy cardio as it gives a boost of energy and burns more calories. What is the target that you have set and how close are you to achieving it? I currently weigh 87kg; my target is to hit 65kg by May. What motivates you to continue with this lifestyle? An excessive weight loss of 33kg has given me a lot of reasons to keep going. I feel good about myself, I love dressing up, I love how people appreciate me and are inspired by me. I hope I keep inspiring people towards having a healthy lifestyle.

WITH ESFIR

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designer’s collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

T

he clockwork earrings and Lilly’s kiss necklace are one of a kind. The pieces are versatile and can be dressed up or down as per occasion. These articles are a part of Esfir’s first fine silver collection; the “Dreamscape” and are a result of endless hours of love and labour. The necklace and earrings are made of precious metals combined with gems and surreal motifs.

Zoha Matin Nutritionist I’d describe my style as trendy and minimalistic. These days I’m really into the retro look - men’s style blazers, edgy power suits and relaxed-fit mom jeans. I love statement accessories (go big or go home!) so I paired this basic jumpsuit with these Esfir pieces to really make my outfit pop!

45

FEBRUARY 17-23 2019

Sona Memon Marketing Head, Dawat PK These jewels from Esfir’s latest collection are super feminine and pretty. I wanted to give an edgy vibe to my look so I teamed the jewellery with an all-black look. This black blazer by Fozaza with mirror and feather detailing adds the perfect amount of edge to the ensemble. I teamed the look with boot cut jeans and finished with a slick ponytail and I’m ready to take this look from an evening soiree to a night out!

Malaika Hasan Brand Manager, National Foods Ltd. I loved the dreamy clockwork earrings and the Lilly’s kiss necklace. They’re statement pieces yet so versatile! Hence I chose to style them in a classic, feminine way. The pink pleated top complimented the necklace perfectly and the plain white trousers allowed the glittering earrings to shine.

Let me live: Kendall Jenner on being shamed for acne Kendall Jenner recently spoke about the abuse she received online for getting an acne break-out during the 2018 Golden Globe Awards. In a recent interview, Jenner shared that she did not expect her acne to become a problem. “It was probably a once in a lifetime thing for me to go to the Golden Globes. I don’t know if I’ll ever go again because that’s not usually my event to go to. And so, I went and I was super excited about it. I was feeling good about myself.
