WITH ASAD ZAMAN KHAN Actor and model Asad Zaman Khan, rises to the challenge of our rapid-fire round. Find out more about his upcoming projects, the scariest thing he has ever done and who he believes to be the best dressed actors in the industry FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

32

What do you enjoy more, acting or modelling? Acting. Which character have you enjoyed playing the most so far? Zaryab from Ghutan. If not an actor, what would you have rather been? I would’ve been a professional cricketer.

Which of your characters do you think would be the most fun to meet in real life? It would have to be Daani from Massi Yar Tang Na Kar, because of his happy-go-lucky, fun and carefree personality.

What has been your most rewarding project yet? For myself personally I would say Ghutan, and for the public I would say Kuch Na Kaho.

You are a black belt in Wushu and Taekwondo, how often do you train? I train three times a week along with my gym.

Have you ever used your celebrity status to get out of a ticket? Yes, so many times. Once I was stopped by a traffic warden and right in front of us was my picture on the billboard. So I pointed out the billboard to him and he was like ‘sir aap hamare star hai, aap jaye.’ (Sir, you are our star, you can go).

If you were a sportsman, what sports would you have played? Cricket.

What is physically the scariest thing you have ever done? I was alone on a sailing boat whilst shooting for a TVC and I ended up jumping in the ocean. Although I’m a good swimmer it was still scary and I realised the ocean is not something to mess around in. What is your goal for 2019? I want 2019 to be the best year of my life. Who is your celebrity crush? My celebrity crush keeps on changing.

33

If you got a call from Hollywood to recreate any of the classic superhero movies, which character would you want to portray? I would like to play Thor.

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

Are you a dog or a cat person? I’m a dog person and I had a Russian Husky which is my favourite breed. Who according to you is the best dressed man and woman in the Pakistani film industry? The best dressed actors I would say are Fawad Khan and Shaan. And the best dressed female actor is Mahira Khan. What new projects are you working on? I am working on a new drama serial called Mere Pass Tum Ho which will air on ARY. I will also be working on a feature film as the main lead, which will be shot in Europe by March this year. I also have some shoots lined up with Amir Adnan, as I have been signed up as the face of Amir Adnan for 2019.

FASHION

WITH REÉSE

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designer’s collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

T

he ‘Julietta’ jacket is a versatile

piece by Reése, which can be dressed up or down as per occasion. Julietta features a wellconstructed velvet over coat adorned with gold block print lapels. We love the minimalism and classy vibes this piece offers!

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

36

Gwendoline Privé Model The ‘Julietta’ by Reése is oh so enviable as it is versatile. I paired it with my striped black and white Mango body-con dress, fastening it all together with my Hermès belt. This smart, classy piece is a tribute to panache if there ever was one. I brought the whole look together with a Gucci bag and Jimmy Choo lace stilettos which makes it a statement as bold as it is minimalistic.

37

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

Haiya Bokhari Stylist I’ve been incorporating the normcore trend into my daily wardrobe this winter but using key pieces to evoke the aesthetic - with racer stripe pants and a grey turtle neck, the velvet jacket worked its magic in contrast, serving to take a casual outfit to a more formal one.

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

38

Zara Gul Make-up Artist I wanted to play on the richness of the velvet and the gold accent on the jacket so I paired the piece with a plain turtle neck and skinny jeans. The red heels and opulent earrings help tie the whole look together for a cool, semi-formal outfit I can wear for multiple occasions.

Uber talented actor Mansha Pasha decodes her style for us. From her love for flowy silhouettes and sneakers, to the celebrity closets she’d like to raid; Mansha tells us all Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

WITH

MANSHA PASHA

FASHION

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

46

How would you describe your body type? I have a petite frame and really long legs with not very broad shoulders. I think I’d describe myself as pear shaped because my lower half is definitely heavier than my top. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body hasn’t really changed over the past five years. I’m still petite like I used to be. I might have lost some baby fat on my face, other than that my body type is pretty much the same. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My most troublesome area is probably my face and my hair which I take care of the most because in my line of work both these things are exposed to pollutants. We are also exposed to lots of blowouts, make-up and different products that contain various chemicals. Each of these glam rituals take their toll on your skin and hair so one has to take more care. How do you dress according to your body type? I don’t think I dress according to my body type. I mostly dress according to what I feel like wearing. I don’t like to wear clothes that are too baggy because then I strangely end up looking chubbier than I am. I prefer wearing clothes that fit right and look better. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing up? I think the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing up is to be insecure or uncomfortable about what they are wearing. A lot of times you end up seeing someone wearing a certain outfit that compliments them and assume that it’ll work for you too. However, it doesn’t always work that way. If you’re not comfortable and confident with what you wear, then don’t wear it. Confidence and comfort is the key!

47

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

How has your style changed over the years? My style has really evolved. I am more experimental now than I used to be. Even my choice of colour has evolved. I love pastels and my favourite colours these days are dark blue, tea pink and yellow, which I would probably not have opted for before. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Straight cuts and flowy dresses work well for me. With eastern wear, I feel ghararas, lehnga cholis and saris look good on me. For western wear I’d say skirts, gowns, jeans and tops suit me more as compared to very edgy clothes. What is the one piece of clothing that you would never wear? Never say never, but anything that is unnecessarily revealing and shows off too much skin makes me uncomfortable. For instance, I have never worn a completely backless dress. What’s a style every woman should try at least once in her life? I think every woman should wear a really long, heavy and flowy gown once. Even I haven’t worn a really big gown with a trail but one should wear it at least once! If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be? I would raid Rihanna’s and Zendaya’s closet in a heartbeat. I really like their sense of style. What are the first items you gravitate towards when shopping? T-shirts! But perhaps I’d gravitate more towards what I need rather than mindlessly picking up things along the way. What item in your closet do you wear the most? I usually wear a lot of jeans and t-shirts so things I feel most comfortable in. High heels or sneakers? Definitely sneakers!

What inspired the idea of Manara by Maria Asif Baig? I already have my own consultancy which is all about working according to the needs and requirements of the clients. Manara was my own innovation, a vision with no limitations which provided me an opportunity to create a product range with enough room for all audiences different from the existing market. You initiated a transition from the popular pastel hues to solid jewel tones, what inspired this aesthetic? Switching to solid jewel tones has set our product apart from the current market where everyone else is still playing around with light pastels. This has grown into a unique selling proposition for Manara. What city in the world inspires you the most? Rome; all its impeccable historical buildings from the beauty of the Colosseum to Pantheon and Ara Pacis are most inspiring to me. What is your design process likefrom capturing inspiration to the final design? I draw inspiration from every little thing around me. From people to enviourmental change, the vintage visuals and the art around me. What music inspires and moves you when you are in a creative headspace? Absolutely everything; from trance and house to Sufi and Qawali. When you design, who do you envision wearing your work? We want to design and put together a final look with multiple options for everyone’s sense of style. We want people to innovate and style

55

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

their way but also be confident in their own skin consenting to experimentations and not bounding themselves to what’s currently trending. Where do you see Pakistani fashion heading in the next five years? Pakistani fashion will definitely be reaching new heights making progress by leaps and bounds competing with the international world of fashion and vogue. How do you prefer to spend your leisure time? Either chilling at home with family or watching a brain dead series with my close friends. What are some of your favourite silhouettes and why? The sheath and A-Line silhouettes are my favourite; it is elongated and can be customised to a perfect fitting according to one’s shape. What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line? I had no fears. I trusted my gut and went with the flow. What is the most outrageous piece of fashion advice you have ever received? When random people advise others about what looks good on them. This is something that should come from within. Everyone is the best judge of themselves. How would you define Manara in three words? Classic, beautiful and detailed. What is in store for the brand’s future? Lots of ideas, stay tuned for some really amazing surprises.

FOOD

Table Talk with

Cafe Ganache

A business venture that started off as a dessert bar now flourishes as a full blown restaurant at Mall 94 Lahore. We sat down with the man behind the sweet phenomenon, Salman Shahid to talk about Ganache’s transition as well as his strengths and strategies in sustaining a restaurant

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

56

Can you share the story of Cafe Ganache’s transition from an idea to reality? I transferred my sister’s dream of having a high end cake shop into reality by giving her a head start at my Gloria Jean’s coffee store in phase 5 which I eventually sold, but she continued working and made Ganache the best patisserie along with her partner Kashif Anwer, of Coffee Planet. What is the process of developing a new menu or new dishes at Cafe Ganache? It surely does require a lot of patience. You really have to know the audience you want to serve. For every few minutes I can spare I make sure I go to Café Ganache and get feedback from as many customers as possible. It is only then you can understand what the market need is. What is your favourite dish from the menu? The oyster fish. How is Cafe Ganache’s menu different from what others are offering? Previously Ganache was known for its delicious desserts but now we slowly expanded to a very elaborate main menu; a very fulfilling afternoon tea menu and we recently launched our Sunday brunch menu as well.

57

FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019

What are the top three patron favourites at your restaurant? Although we take pride in saying that everyone would love the food we serve but the top three patron favourites would be Moroccan Stuffed Chicken, Oyster Fish and Gluten Free Pasta, but I would definitely suggest everyone tries our hot drinks and soups. They are to die for! In your opinion how has Pakistan changed in terms of spending and eating out? I believe Pakistan has made considerable improvement in this field. But because of this, the line of work has also become a cut throat business. One really has to be up to date with the market trends, and be aware of what or who your competition is.

What are some of the challenges of being a restaurateur? There are many; owners often underestimate the startup capital to open and run a restaurant but that’s just the first step, the main challenge is how you maintain the quality of the food you promise your customers. What is in store for Cafe Ganache in the future? In the future cafe Ganache will be hitting DHA and Islamabad with a bang!

What has been your greatest professional success and biggest setback? I believe my greatest professional success is being the CEO of Care Cosmetics and the biggest setback would be me losing PP234 in general elections 2018. What does an average work day involve for you? I own multiple businesses and I prefer taking a hands-on approach towards my businesses so you will always see me with my trusted briefcase popping in and out. Sometimes it gets a little hectic but I enjoy living my life the way it is. What is the secret behind sustaining a restaurant? I’ll be honest the two most important things for sustaining a restaurant is patience and a good financial back up. What is your least favourite culinary trend? Sous Vide, I am fine with the concept behind it but I simply don’t have the time to wait for my food to cook for that long. FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2 2019
