IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY Farhad With
Humayun and Navid Shahzad
Master drummer Farhad Humayun speaks about his unbreakable bond with his iconic mother, academic-actor Navid Shahzad. The two sat down with TEdit and spoke about a life shared together.
What inspires you the most about your son/mother? Navid Shahzad: His strength. He is a true warrior, loyal, loving and honest. Farhad Humayun: She is calm and content in the most testing times. She will never show a knee jerk reaction. That is the sign of an educated mind. What trait of each other encourages you? Navid Shahzad: His vision. He has always encouraged me (and others) to dream big and to be unafraid. Farhad Humayun: She excels in everything she does and prepares for the smallest speech or role for months. That is how she has raised all of us. When you’re prepared, you can accomplish anything. What is your favourite memory of each other? Navid Shahzad: I cannot think of one particular memory. Life does not allow for ‘pop ups’ because when you look back, which we all do; there is a long list of moments that you cherish. I suppose one of them must be when Farhad was born and I went to see him in the nursery. He was born in Jersey and like most Asian babies had jaundice so they put him under a simulated sun light and blindfolded him. When I saw this beautiful, plump baby he was clad only in a diaper and had pulled the blindfold off his eyes! The nurses loved him because he was so active and just would not allow the blindfold to stay on. I suppose he was in a hurry to see the world! Farhad Humayun: Going to school in the morning, she used to drop a scoop of vanilla ice cream in milk and give it to me for breakfast, when I was getting late. What is the most adventurous thing you have done together? Navid Shahzad: All our life has been an adventure! We relish every moment and every detail of every single day! Farhad Humayun: We have walked the streets of England and Turkey endlessly and tirelessly, stopping for a bite at a cafe or for coffee and eclairs. Eating dessert or drinking coffee is always an adventure for us. What’s the best thing about being a part of your family? Navid Shahzad: I think the best thing about our family is that we constantly communicate with each other. We respect each other’s space, opinions and aspirations. Most importantly, we do not expect a FEBRUARY 9-15 2020

traditional relationship wherein only the parents are always right. I learn from my children every day because I respect their intellect, creativity and their integrity. So it becomes a two way street and there is never a traffic jam! Farhad Humayun: My two sisters, Ami and I and when Abu was alive, are close friends. We share the same interests - we like to laugh at nonsensical things - we always know we can count on each other, there is no pretense and there’s amazing positivity when we are together. Is there anything that you wish had been different between you two or that you would still like to change? Navid Shahzad: Not really. We love each other unconditionally with our faults, shortcomings and failures. We rejoice when any one of us succeeds and we comfort each other through failures. It is a very good equation. Farhad Humayun: Everything is great! What is the one thing you love about each other? Navid Shahzad: I love his crazy sense of humour. This is something he has inherited from his father- I have nothing to do with it, but he has such a strange, droll way of looking at life. Farhad Humayun: She has the softest ear lobes and sees the light in the darkest times. Is there anything you wanted to tell each other but never have? Navid Shahzad: I don’t think there are too many skeletons in the family cupboard - so the answer would be – no. Farhad Humayun: No. In our family, we don’t hide things from each other. However, I don’t tell her enough that I love her but I show her in many ways. Describe each other in three words: Navid Shahzad: Beautiful, strong and kind. Farhad Humayun: Warm, sparkling, mighty. How are your personalities similar? Navid Shahzad: Well we are both creative people so we enjoy a special and very delicate relationship based on music, performance, art etc. We are both private people with few friends and we are intensely loyal to people we love. And of course, we are both generous to a fault – money and time are of no consequence. Farhad Humayun: We are similar in the way we analyse life, people, art and relationships. Money and power never meant much to us. Earning respect and helping others is our measure of success. Do you think you are your mother’s favourite child? Farhad Humayun: She makes all three of us feel we are the favourite child. It’s an art.
37
FEBRUARY 9-15 2020
Do you have a favourite child? Navid Shahzad: No. I love each of my three children equally but for different reasons. One may be strong, another may be vulnerable but the measure of love never changes. It is like your heart divides itself into the number of children you have and if one part of the heart does not function along with the others - you know you are in trouble. I do not think any mother could ever answer a question like this though my daughters tease me about my ‘preference’ for Farhad!

The Dark World of Skin Lightening by Amber Liaqat
Millions of people across the world want to make their skin lighter- but the treatments they use can be dangerous. For people, skin lightening creams are just another part of their daily skincare routine. Billions are spent advertising these creams not just to women but also men across the world. It can be said that the advertisements for whitening cream have explicitly linked fairer skin to beauty, romance and even career success. There are two types of whitening creams - those that “lighten” and those that “bleach”. Bleaching creams contain harsh chemicals that inhibit the production of melanin and rapidly make the skin whiter. Lightening creams, however, don’t necessarily contain these chemicals but will promise to whiten the skin with long term use. At worst, they can leave the users with lasting, sometimes irreparable damage to their skin.
Dermatologists on aesthetic choice and racial prejudice Dr Kamran Qureshi, Aesthetic Physician
Dr Kamran Qureshi based in Lahore has a very simple take on skin lightening agents and creams. ”As long as skin lightening creams do not contain mercury and steroids it would not make any difference in making the skin light but if it does contain mercury then it becomes a very tricky situation, it makes the skin layer thin and there is a very good chance of having pigmentation over a period of time. In Pakistan, over the counter as such or are PDA approved and the creams are not regulated reg ingredients are a of a great concern but doctors do prescribe creams which are backed by good manufacturing companies. If the product doesn’t display the ingredients at all, then don’t use it. Speak to your dermatologist or GP if you have any concerns about your skin tone and they derm will be able to advise accordingly. I still suggest improving your skin texture and wil complexion by getting good hydra-facial and looking after your diet instead of co using whitening creams”. u
Aspiring to Fair Skin in South Asia In South Asia particularly, fair skin is considered as social markers of aristocratic lineage and class allegiance. White skin has a colonial notion of power and superiority over dark skin. Even matrimonial columns and websites stress on fairer-skinned clients as more desirable than dark skin toned clients. In short, associating white skin to wealth and desirability is not new in south Asia. The belief a and practice to have lighter skin has been rooted from ancient times. For instance, a Chinese myth believes that pearls can lighten one’s complexion by taking a small Ch amount of pearl powder together with hot water every day. In the West, aristocrats amo and rich ric people in the 17th and 18th centuries kept their skin white by applying lead oxide powder to their faces to differentiate themselves from the working class. Dr Zarqa Surharwardy Taimur, Aesthetic Dermatologist Renowned dermatologist, Doctor Zarqa also does not recommend using whitening creams. “Use of whitening creams is the most commonly used method but most creams have steroids and mercury and have negative effects on skin, they are toxic for skin and eventually develop skin pigmentation, the skin becomes wrinkly especially around the eye area and doctor can tell in a glance that the patient has been using skin lightening creams. I would suggest a treatment which is most popular, intravenous injections of Glutathione which is a natural and master antioxidant which is present in our body and almost all living cells, it fights with the free radicals, and detoxifies the body. Glutathione also helps to reduce the dark melanin pigments, and turns them into a lighter pigment, this leads to the skin becoming fair and brighter. Glutathione is available as tablets and injections. However, the tablets do not get absorbed well, and injections contain Glutathione and other vitamins that are injected directly in the veins i.e. blood stream and gets absorbed faster than the skin whitening pills and it also contains a higher quantity of Glutathione than skin whitening pills, therefore skin whitening injections are a preferred option for skin whitening treatment”.
The Power of Advertising The preference to have white skin is the leading force behind the the skin lightening industry. This phenomenon was reflected in the domination of skin lightening products in the Asian skincare market with 60 percent of sales. Skin lightening products are readily available from major cosmetics companies, from local convenience stores, and widely over the internet. As of last year, the business of skin lightening and g was estimated to be worth between £8billion bleaching and £15billion, £15billio with multinational beauty conglom conglomerates cashing in on its popularity in Sout South Asia and West Africa, in Nigeria, as ma many as 70 percent of women admit using b bleaching creams regularly.
Alarming Affects Many skin lightening creams contain the bleaching agent hydroquinone and also contain mercury. Hydroquinone, described as “the biological equivalent of paint sstripper”, can remove the top layer of sk skin, increasing the risk of skin cancer, and cause fatal liver and kidney damage. Mercur Mercury can cause similar life-threatening health problems. prob Consumers should always checkk ery the ingredients of their skin creams, be suspicious of very d low prices which are likely to indicate the lotion is fake and potentially harmful, and never use a product containing hydroquinone.

Babe, you’re not punched,’ Heard tells Depp, attempting to downplay her outburst the previous evening.
Priyanka reveals how she avoided a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ in that Grammys 2020 dress Priyanka Chopra received a myriad of mixed reactions when she showed up for the 2020 Grammy Awards alongside husband Nick Jonas in a deep-plunging Ralph & Russo gown. The Sky is Pink star walked the red-carpet in an ivory, bell-sleeved ensemble that sure turned heads. However, during her latest interview with US Weekly, the star revealed she never leaves for an event unless she is absolutely secure about her dress. “Ralph & Russo, whenever they make couture for me or custom outfits for me, they always do them fitted to my body, keeping these things [wardrobe malfunctions] in mind,” Priyanka said during the interview. She continued. “So as much as people might think it would be hard to manage, they found this incredible tulle the same colour as my skin tone and sort of held the dress together with that. So you can’t even see it in the pictures but there was no way it would have happened if they didn’t have that. It was like a netting.”
Pakistan now capable of diagnosing novel coronavirus, says PM aide Amid the havoc that contagious coronavirus has created around the world, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Zafar Mirza has announced that Pakistan is “now equipped to diagnose novel coronavirus” with the arrival of at least 1,000 testing kits from China. Though no confirmed case of the coronavirus – medically named 2019-nCoV – has been detected in Pakistan thus far, the government has taken a slew of preventive and precautionary measures. In a series of tweets, the PM’s aide hailed the efforts by the National Institute of Health (NIH) for attaining the reagents for diagnosis of the virus. “Alhamdolilah, as of today [Sunday] we have now capability of diagnosing Coronarivus in Pakistan. I want to applaud our NIH leadership and team for their hard work in securing the reagent for diagnosing,” he tweeted.

WhatsApp has stopped working on millions of phones WhatsApp Messenger around the globe has stopped operating on millions of iPhones and Android devices running older operating systems. Those who are currently using Apple iOS 8 and Android versions 2.3.7 Gingerbread and older will, unfortunately, be unable to continue using the app. According to Google’s distribution figures, 0.3% of the world’s 2.5 billion users are still on Android Gingerbread or earlier. The messaging service is doing this in order to protect user security however; this comes at a cost because people using older devices will have no option but to change their smartphone because it will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp.
