Hi light

2

We all have accidents now and then. When we are injured or suddenly unwell, what we want and need is someone to help us — someone who knows what to do. First aid is all about helping people in such situations. First aid is important because it can save lives, but it can help you do a lot more: • • • • •

You can spot dangers. You can help someone who has had an accident. You can help someone who has suddenly fallen sick. You can get help in an emergency. You can help someone who is very upset.

Accidents happen and sometimes when we help others we can get hurt ourselves. But if we can spot dangers, they are less likely to happen. There are hazards and dangers all around us, but you can spot them by doing these three simple things: Look and listen for danger. Decide if an area is safe for you. Make an area safe.

If your clothes catch fire, you need to put them out immediately. You can do this by the stop, drop and roll technique. If outdoors, this is something that works better on grass than it does on concrete. If indoors, it’s better to do this on a hard surface than on a carpet, where the risk of setting the house on fire is higher. Practice this technique to roll on garden and floor to put out flames.

Pressure on a bleeding wound is usually enough to stop the flow of blood. You can put direct pressure on a cut to stop the bleeding. However, if it still does not stop bleeding, seek help from an elder and get it disinfected and bandaged.

If smoke alarms start beeping in school, you must have a plan. It’s not enough that you walk out of class, you must know where to go. If you have fire escape exits in your school, you must know where to exit from in case of an emergency. If you are separated from the rest of your class you should know where to look for them and report to an elder.

When swimming keep the life jackets on and make sure you don’t swim alone. You should know how to watch out for big waves currents; if stuck in one, you should swim parallel to the shore to get out. If swimming in a pool, swim next to the sides and not in the middle or the deep side. Do not dive in the shallow side and never drink water from the pool. If you feel out of breath or scared, call for help or start floating calmly.

Hi light

You may have a pet dog who loves you a lot and may playfully bite you or while playing on the street a stray dog might bite you. Do you know what to do in such a situation? If a dog bites you, immediately tell an elder or your parent and get an injection. The same goes for any other animal such as bees that sting you while you play in the garden.

Make sure the cabinets with poisonous substances such as detergents are up high and latched or locked and do not fool around with them. If you feel something you ate or drank accidentally may be poisonous, tell your parents immediately and keep an ambulance or hospital number handy to call.

• R-I-C-E: Rest the injured area, ice it for 20 minutes for the first 24 hours, lightly compress it with a bandage, and elevate over the level of the heart. • Stop, Drop, Roll: If your body or clothes are on fire, stop, drop to the ground, and roll until the fire is extinguished. Cover your face and mouth to protect them and to prevent yourself from swallowing smoke. • Slap red felt blob-shapes on legs or arms with double-sided tape for ‘bloody’ wounds • Dab cotton in a nostril for a ‘bloody’ nose • Stuff a rolled-up rag into a sock for a ‘swelling’ • Ask your parents to make a list of emergency numbers such as theirs, your grandparents and a hospital for you to call in case of an emergency.

Long overdue A guilt-ridden man has returned to pay a bill at a restaurant, 70 years after doing a runner. Earlier this week, a woman walked into the Lamb’s Grill restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, on behalf of her embarrassed father who sat in a car outside. “This woman walks in the front door, and she looks like she’s on a mission,” explained waitress Jasmine Back. “She walks in and says my father dined and dashed here in 1941,” she told a local paper. The man was just 10-years-old at the time and when he and his friend realised they did not have money to pay for the $1 (Rs98) meal, they left the restaurant without paying the bill instead. Back handed over a five dollar bill as a repayment and said her father has been full of guilt over the incident ever since. “The five dollars don’t belong to me. It belongs to the previous owners, back then. So I need to pay it back,” explained grill owner Francis Liong.Liong also said he forgave the man and hoped to see him back in his restaurant in future. “I’d like to tell him to please come back and eat at Lamb’s Grill — but don’t dash out,” he smiled. World’s smallest parachute Imagine if your parachute was the size of your bed sheet? That was the size of Ernesto Gainza’s canopy as he plummeted 4,200m (14,000ft) into the record books using the world’s smallest parachute. During his threeand-a-half-minute descent, he risked a spin but managed a perfect landing in the Palm Drop Zone at the Skydive Dubai Club. “It was awesome, amazing and emotional,” he said after landing his 3.2 sq m (35 sq ft) canopy. “I had to keep my body really straight, as even a little input from my hips or turning left or right could make the parachute turn.” The extreme athlete has already performed more than 7,000 jumps but spent a year in training for his attempt. Gainza’s jump took 0.18sq m off the previous record for the smallest canopy, set by Brazilian Luigi Cani in 2006. The Venezuelan was presented with a certificate by Guinness World Records. Biggest lamb

A lamb named Goliath is said to be the biggest spring lamb in the world after tipping the scales at 10kg (22.5lb). Ann Endicott, who has been breeding lambs with her husband, David, for 13 years, said that she had never seen anything like it. Goliath was born on the couple’s farm in Wellington, Somerset. Endicott, 49, said: “He is amazing. Thankfully, the mother didn’t suffer during the birth. My husband was helping her and he noticed that the lamb had extremely big feet. When he was born, we just couldn’t believe how big he was. We decided that we should weigh him and when we looked online we realised just how impressive this was.” Goliath is three times the size of other spring lambs and weighs the same as an average human toddler. “He is as big now as some of the lambs born in January. We’ve been lambing since 2001 and never in our time have we seen a lamb as big as this.” Ewes often give birth to twins or triplets but when they have a single offspring it can often be larger than regular lambs. The biggest recorded in New Zealand — the world’s largest producer of lambs — is just (7kg) 15.5lb. The largest ever was born weighing 10.8kg (24lb) in Lancashire in May last year. METRO.CO.UK

Not without fish and chips England fans travelling 5,000 miles to cheer at World Cup will be treated to a taste from back home when the tournament kicks off. A Brazilian chef has won the rights to sell fish and chips at the stadium. Mario Freitas Do Valle fell in love with Britain’s favourite meal on a visit to Aberdeen in 2001 and will even treat England fans to Scotland’s favourite delicacy — fried Mars bars. While Mr Do Valle says his fish suppers will taste a little different from the ones sold back home — he uses an Amazonian fish, instead of cod or haddock — he’s convinced fans will love them. The chef, who runs a fish restaurant in the city of Manaus, where England will play one game in June, said: “We have had lines of people out of the door coming to try them and we expect 4,000 fans will eat them at every game.” Explaining why he negotiated a deal with Fifa to serve fish suppers at the 42,000-seater Arena da Amazônia, the self-titled Super Mario fish fryer said: “I remembered Aberdeen and the fish and chips I had there, and thought it would work. It has really taken off.” He has been listed as Brazil’s first member of the National Federation of Fish Friers and said his £2 (Rs250) portions went down well with England manager Hodgson on a recent visit to the city. “Roy Hodgson said they were a bit different from the ones in Croydon, where he grew up, because they had less vinegar but he really liked them,”’ he said. “I think England fans are in for an amazing surprise.” METRO.CO.UK

Word Origins Cricket Have you ever wondered why the popular bat-ball game is named cricket? The name of this sport involving 11 team members is originally thought to either have been derived from the Old French ‘criquet’, meaning goal, post, or stick or from the Middle Dutch ‘kricke’ meaning stick or staff. The latter Middle Dutch derivation from ‘kricke’ is generally considered more likely due to the strong trade connections between southeast England and the Dutch. One more possible source was proposed by European language expert Heiner Gillmeister of Bonn University. He proposed that the name cricket comes from the Middle Dutch phrase for hockey, ‘met de krik ket sen’, which means ‘with the stick, chase’. Early cricket was played with a stick that resembled a hockey stick more than the modern day cricket bat. He also proposed that cricket was Dutch in origins. The game of cricket itself is thought to have been played as early as the 13th century, with the first direct reference to it appearing in 1598 in a court case which referenced a game called ‘krekett’ (sometimes spelled creckett) being played at the Royal Grammar School in England in 1550. Cricket gradually grew in popularity until, in the 18th century, it was named the official sport of England, being the favoured leisure activity among the privileged class.

Cool facts Mars is nicknamed the red planet because it is covered with rust-like dust. Even the atmosphere is a pinkish red, coloured by tiny particles of dust thrown up from the surface.

Jupiter has a very strong magnetic field, you would weigh two and a half times as much as you would on Earth.

Mars experiences violent dust storms which continually change its surface. Mars has many massive volcanoes and is home to Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in our solar system. Mars has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide. It is not thick enough to trap the sun’s heat like Venus, so the planet is very cold. Mars has many channels, plains and canyons on the surface which could have been caused by water erosion in the past.

If you were to descend into Jupiter, the thin, cold atmosphere becomes thicker and hotter, gradually turning into a thick dark fog. In the blackness about 1,000km down, the pressure squeezes the atmosphere so hard that it becomes like liquid. At the centre of Jupiter is a rocky core, slightly bigger than Earth but weighing about 20 times more. Surrounding the core is an ocean of liquid hydrogen, about 1,000kilometres deep.

Most substances become denser when they solidify. Have you wondered what happens to water when it solidifies? Let’s find out.

1. Mix 0.1 litre milk with 0.1 litre water and freeze it to make ice. 2. Fill the transparent container with lukewarm water and add a little food colouring. 3. Place an ice cube in the water and pay close attention to what is going on, it goes fast! • Skimmed milk. • Something to freeze ice cubes in. • A tall transparent container, for example, a glass vase.

You will see that the ice cube floats in water. It has a lower density than liquid water. This is the reason why in the cold winter months, only the top layer of lakes and rivers freezes. Underneath the ice layer, the water remains liquid and this allows aquatic life to thrive during winters. Well why doesn’t the entire body of water freeze? This is because water does not behave like other liquids. Generally liquids expand when heated, however water is an exception, its volume gradually decreases when it is heated. This continues till the temperature reaches 4°C. At temperatures over 4°C, water starts expanding. So when the ice cube melts, it sinks to the bottom as a white waterfall. This is because water has a higher density as a liquid than as solid, and the density is the greatest when water is at 4°C. Therefore, the cold milk and water solution, being denser falls down into the lukewarm water.

• Food colouring (if you have).

Liquid water is an example of a liquid. All liquids have a fixed volume but can change shape. You can pour one liter of milk from a bottle into a bowl. The shape changes, but it is still one litre of milk.
