Since being written The Jungle Book has often caught the public eye, be it the collection’s wide success in weekly magazines or Disney’s animated enactment of the book from 1967. Apart from these there have been various feature films and television series loosely based on the stories. With Disney’s new Jungle Book just out, we thought it would be appropriate to bring you some fun titbits associated with the story.

Neel Sethi is reportedly the only actor who will appear in person in the new Jungle Book movie. Most of the film’s sets and characters were created with greenscreen and CGI, with occasional practical elements included as well. But ultimately, this film is going to come down to Sethi. It’s on his shoulders to convince audiences to buy into the illusion of the movie.

The Jungle Book is said to be Bill Murray’s first Disney film, but only if his roles in Disney’s live-action Touchstone Pictures aren’t counted. Murray’s previous voiceover roles include Garfield and Fantastic Four’s Human Torch. For the new Jungle Book, Murray is voicing Baloo the bear.

While the Disney movie used Kaa in the 1967 version, it was as a secondary comic relief villain, while the Kaa of Kipling’s Jungle Book was actually an ally to Mowgli who helped save him from monkeys and aided Mowgli’s wolf pack against the Red Dogs during The Second Jungle Book. The new Jungle Book is reportedly a little more faithful to Kipling’s original stories than the first Disney film.

Hi light

According to Kipling’s daughter, the first syllable of Mowgli’s name rhymes with ‘cow’ rather than ‘show’. The mispronunciation was not unique to Disney.

The Hindi version of the film comes with a new song specifically for the Indian audience. It’s a new rendition of the classic ‘Jungle Jungle Baat Chali song’. This version was worked on by Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj.

The Jungle Book in Hindi features our very own talented Bollywood stars who are all ready to bring back to life the remarkable characters of the epic story. The actors lending their voice to the film in Hindi are Priyanka Chopra as Kaa, Irrfan Khan as the fun-loving Baloo, Shefali Shah as Raksha, Om Puri as Bagheera and Nana Patekar will be back as Shere Khan. The Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions of the film were released in India on April 8, prior to the film’s worldwide release.

For the 1967 animated version of The Jungle Book, Richard M Sherman and his late brother Robert wrote all the songs except for ‘The Bare Necessities’. Nearly 50 years later, Richard M. Sherman is contributing new songs for the latest version of The Jungle Book.

In the animated version from 1967 the original plan was for the Beatles to voice the four vultures who befriend Mowgli when he feels betrayed by Baloo. But the Fab Four’s schedule didn’t leave time for recording their lines and John Lennon was opposed to the whole idea as well.

Warner Bros has its own Jungle Book movie slated to come out in 2018, with Mr Motion Capture himself Andy Serkis slated to direct the film and star as Baloo. And this movie also has an impressive voice cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Christian Bale as Bagheera, Cate Blanchett as Kaa and Rohan Chand as Mowgli. But after Disney’s big budget remake, it remains to be seen if moviegoers are ready for two Jungle Book movies in a short span of three years.

King Louie was created for Disney’s animated Jungle Book, and therefore he was not in the original novel. Which is obvious since Kipling clearly knew that orangutans aren’t native to India while Disney didn’t. For the new film, Christopher Walken’s King Louie is being reimagined as a gigantopithecus, a very large ancestor of orangutans who are believed to have lived in parts of India. It’s still a bit of a stretch, but it’s slightly more accurate than the first Disney film.

Rudyard Kipling was born on December 30, 1865, in Bombay, India. He was educated in England but returned to India in 1882. A decade later, Kipling married Caroline Balestier and settled in Brattleboro, Vermont, where he wrote The Jungle Book in 1894, among a host of other works that made him hugely successful. The stories led to his winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. He died in 1936. Kipling’s The Jungle Book was originally serialised in magazines beginning in 1893 with illustrations by his father, John Lockwood Kipling. The younger Kipling lived in India for 12 years of his life, and used the stories he heard there as his eventual inspiration for The Jungle Book. There are 14 short stories in The Jungle Book, but Mowgli isn’t the main character in all of them. Mowgli actually made his first appearance in a short story called ‘In the Rukh’, which came out before The Jungle Book was collected in 1894. Kipling went on to use Mowgli in five additional stories which were collected in The Second Jungle Book. Now that both the books are in public domain, you can read them online.

Trivia

Virtual reality, or VR, is the latest buzzword in the wonderful world of technology. Don’t be fooled into thinking it is a new technology though, it isn’t, but that’s not to say it isn’t something to get excited about. The clue is in the name — it’s the experience of a world that doesn’t actually exist. We aren’t talking about getting yourself lost in a book or day dreaming about a photo or painting however, even if these technically are also experiencing some sort of virtual reality. The virtual reality we are talking about is one created by computers, it allows you to experience and interact with a 3D world that isn’t real by putting on a head-mounted display and some form of input tracking. The display will typically be split between your eyes, creating a stereoscopic 3D effect with stereo sound, and together with the technology and the input tracking, it will create an immersive, believable experience, allowing you to explore the virtual world being generated by the computer. Virtual reality will make you feel like you are there mentally and physically. You turn your head and the world turns with you so the illusion created by whatever world you are in is never lost. Watch a film in the cinema and the split-second fear you might feel when a devastating earthquake happens on screen will very quickly disappear if you turn your head to see the person next to you munching away on their popcorn. Films and books take you to different fictional worlds, but they are not worlds you change based on your actions. There are various kinds of virtual reality from fully immersive and non-immersive to collaborative and web-based. The VR everyone is excited about is the fully-immersive variation because this is the explorable and interactive 3D computer-created world that can take you to places reality might not allow for, be that walking on Mars or driving around the mountains in a sportscar. Virtual reality as we know it today has been kicking around for decades. To give you an idea, the first head-mounted display wasn’t Oculus, even though this is the device that arguably drove the VR renaissance, it was a device called Headsight that was created in the 1960s. But there were non-digital predecessors, all the way from 360-degree paintings that had the same aim: to take your experience to another place. Virtual reality is the wise guy in tech and not just because it is old. The technology has been used for all sorts of things over its 200 years from science and medicine to training pilots and helping architects present their latest skyscraper, allowing people to experience walking through it before a brick has been laid. The current focus might be largely on gaming, but that’s not all that VR is good for. Virtual reality has plenty of applications and this is only likely to expand as the technology develops further. Audi recently announced it would be putting VR in some of its brand stores for example, allowing customers to experience any of its 50-something models in the colours they want, the extras they might add and in the surroundings they might drive in. The virtual reality we have been referring to in this feature typically requires some form of head-mounted display, a computer, smartphone or console that creates the 3D world and some form of input tracking, which could be hand tracking, voice or head. As we mentioned, some of the VR devices contain a display, splitting the feed for each eye. In these cases, a cable (usually HDMI) will transfer the video from your PC or console to the screen(s) in front of your eyes. For the likes of Google Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR and some of the more affordable options, a smartphone is slotted into the headset and used as the display with the content already loaded on. Virtual reality is at an exciting time in 2016. Many of the devices that have been in development over the last few years are almost at launch point, which means in the next few months, this virtual reality experience we have been banging on about is something you’ll be able to experience yourself. Some have been available for some time, but as the VR hype builds, so too do those experiences.

Defense Zone 2 HD

Clash Royale

Defense Zone 2 HD is a more realistic tower-defense game, with a modern military theme. In comparison to its competition, it certainly has more grit, but it also has excellent gameplay. There is a lot of tactical depth to the game, which may make it difficult to get into if you’ve never played a tower defense game before. However, I suspect that genre veterans will relish the challenge it presents. Defense Zone 2 HD costs Rs304 for the full version, but there is a light version available if you want to check that first. It’s definitely one of the best tower defense games on Android.

The latest offering from Supercell has been given an enormous advertising push and is guaranteed to ride the top-10 charts in Play Store for months to come. Clash Royale is a blend of multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), real-time strategy (RTS) and collectible card game (CCG). The way it mixes these elements is deftly effective, in the way only such a huge and well-established developer could achieve. Sure, it’s a great deal more simplified than other RTSs or CCGs, and this is done to make it more approachable, but it never feels trivial. It also retains the clan element, allowing players to band together to share cards, and thus gain more experience. Beware, as ever, the freemium. The game uses time-locked upgrades to encourage you to make purchases, but if you’re patient, you can just wait it out. SOURCE. PCADVISOR.COM

Parroting wildlife Englishman Ted Richards, 56, is obsessed by pet parrots Ellie, Teaka, Timneh, Jake and Bubi and has his face tattooed with colourful feathers. But the animal nut has taken this obsession one step further and has had both his ears removed and is planning to find a surgeon prepared to turn his nose into a beak. Ted, a retired shoe factory worker, got his first tattoo in 1976 and has since built up a collection of body modifications covering almost his entire body — including a peace sign branded on his left shoulder with a 750oC hot iron and two magnets implanted in his hands. He shares his home in Hartcliffe, Bristol with his four parrots, as well as South American green iguana Iggy, and pit bull terrier Candy. He scours the internet looking for new procedures and says his facial transformation is a tribute to his ‘babies’ — Ellie, a green winged macaw, and Teaka, a harlequin macaw. DAILYTELEGRAPH.COM.AU

Big on books The largest bookstore in the world is due to open in Tehran within two months, according to the head of the cultural heritage department, Mahmoud Salehi. To date, the largest bookstore is situated in New York City, covering an area of 14,000 square meters. However, Tehran plans to break this record by constructing a building of 45,000 square meters. In addition, a parking area for up to 5,000 cars is being planned. The ridiculously vast collection of books will be suitable for people of any status and age category. The shelves will also be filled with magical books for children and adolescents. The enormous building will also have an open auditorium for children which will host theatre performances, based on book plots. In addition, the bookstore will have four research departments, where university teachers will hold study sessions with their students. “Currently we are at a stage of getting the store’s equipment. We hope that all interested publishers will be able to place their work on our shelves,” said the store’s spokesperson. SPUTNIKNEWS.COM

An unusual disposition

A Chinese woman has been mysteriously producing stone tears for seven years and has turned to the media for help because doctors won’t take her seriously. Ding Aihua noticed a pain in her eyes about seven years ago and her husband, Liang Xinchun, was shocked to discover a stone under her eyelid. She has been producing them ever since. Liang claims that no doctor has been able to explain the bizarre phenomena, and says that every time he goes to a hospital, they treat him as if he and his wife are crazy. After it was removed, she was okay for a while but then he had found another stone. The hard, silvery white stones are difficult to remove. He said he needed to use a wire to ease them out, and claims to have gathered 10 of the small stones produced in his wife’s eye socket. Liang, who is a farmer in Lufang village in Heze city in East China’s Shandong Province, said that despite going all over the country looking for treatment, doctors usually refuse to accept that he and his wife are telling the truth. He said, “They treat us as if we are mental cases.” After the latest stone, instead of going to medics her husband turned to the media, and he showed one of the stones in his wife’s eye socket to convince them of the problem. He said, “It is incredibly painful this problem with her eyes, her health is perfectly normal.” Journalists who then accompanied the couple to hospital admitted they were baffled as to what the possible explanation might be, and the report has now gone viral in China. Fin-tastic find This ‘Godzilla’ iguana was spotted swimming close to human divers in this remarkably clear underwater footage. The creature, which is the same size as its human counterparts, swims majestically through the sea. He was filmed by videographer Steve Winkworth at Cabo Marshall, a dive site off the north coast of Isabela in the Galapagos Islands. In the footage, the iguana crawls along the sea bed searching for food before lifting off and heading back to the surface for air. As he dives again his long tail can be seen sweeping from side to side as his limbs are kept tight to his side. The video shows him scooting past divers as he continues his hunt for something tasty to eat. It was posted on Reddit with the title, ‘Tiny Godzilla nomming on things underwater’. Marine iguanas, like this one filmed eating algae, are vegetarians and experts when it comes to foraging underwater. They’re capable of diving up to 9-metres deep. MIRROR.CO.UK

consists of four members: Luke Hemmings, the lead vocalist and guitarist; Michael Clifford, the guitarist and vocalist; Calum Hood who plays bass guitar and does vocals; and Ashton Irwin, the drummer and vocals • 5SOS originally formed on April 3, 2011, however Ashton didn’t join until December 2011. • Before the band was formed, the boys posted videos of themselves performing popular songs on Luke’s YouTube channel. Their success on YouTube caught Sony’s attention, who signed the band to a publishing deal with Sony ATV Music Publishing in 2012. • Their first gig was in front of only 20 people. • The band and Ashton said they pretty much hated each other before they got together, but now they’re like brothers. • The boys’ biggest musical inspirations are Blink 182, All Time Low, Ed Sheeran and Boys Like Girls. • They say one of the best parts about being in the band is meeting their fans. • They didn’t consider themselves ‘cool’ when they were growing up. Calum says the guys were never part of the popular crowd growing up. “We were just really into

music and every lunch we’d be inside playing guitars and jamming out so not much social action was happening,” he says. “I was just very reserved. The band’s helped me have a voice.” • When it comes to age, Ashton Irwin is the oldest member of the band.

• Ashton’s signature bandana is more than just a style statement. “I really like what it represents,” he says. “It’s more than just a fashion thing to me. It represents my inspirations. I look up to a lot of old school drummers from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. [They used to] wear bandanas to signify they were rock.”

• The band once had to stop and busk on the streets, because they didn’t have enough money for petrol to get home!

• Their first single called ‘Out of My Limit’ was released on November 19, 2012. ‘Out of My Limit’ received over 100,000 views on YouTube within the first 24 hours of it being released.

• The boys thought about auditioning for X Factor at one point but they didn’t want to be known as ‘that band from X-Factor’.

• The boys used to brush their teeth together before every show.

• Whilst recording the Unplugged EP, all the members of 5SOS were sick, but they didn’t let that stop them! • On March 8, 2012 #5secondsofsummer trended on Twitter for the first time worldwide. • Louis Tomlinson from One Direction Tweeted a link to their YouTube song, ‘Gotta Get Out’ in 2012.

• Michael Clifford starting playing guitar because he was obsessed with Guitar Hero. “I got really, really good at that and I was like, ‘Wow, I could play real guitar’,” he says. “And then I played real guitar and sucked so badly. I was like, ‘This is nothing like Guitar Hero.’ I almost quit, but I just kept going and stuck in there.” SOURCE. FACTMONSTER.COM
